Some of the crowd’s favorite speeches were given by Issa Rae, Solange and Maxine Waters.

Issa Rae received the star power award and stated:

“Once I learned to like me more than others did, I didn’t have to worry about being the funniest or the most popular or the prettiest,” she said. “I was the best me, and I’ve only ever tried to be that. So I want to thank the Black Girls Rock for honoring the version of me that I hope will only improve, and I’m a black girl who rocks, baby!”

Solange received the rock star award and stated that:

“When I was a young girl, I was searching and searching and searching for language to articulate who I was and what I felt like inside, and I want to tell the young black girls who might be watching out here that I’m still searching and I don’t always have it. Don’t always have it figured out. There are days when I feel very insecure and I feel like I failed. There are days when I feel so fucking weird and alone, but I get up, and I want you to know that you can and will too. Just know that you can always rise.”

The humanitarian award was given to none other than, Congresswoman Maxine Waters aka “Auntie Maxine.” When Waters approached the stage, she received the biggest applause of the entire night.

Waters gave a memorable speech as she always does by saying:

“I want you to know, if it was not for the love and respect shown to me by black women, those right-wing ultra conservatives … they would have me believed, I’m too black. I’m too confrontational. I’m too tough.  And I’m too disrespectful of them, but now I know I’m simply a strong, black woman. I don’t care how big you are. I don’t care how high you are. If you come for me, I’m coming for you.”

“Black Girls Rock! 2017” will air on BET on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 att 8p/7c, so make sure you tune in to see black girl’s magic at it’s best!
