*Common is now just one Tony Award short of an “EGOT,” that elusive Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony win that only 12 people have been able to accomplish in a career.
This past weekend, Common earned the “E” when he nabbed an Emmy Award for his socially conscious track “Letter to the Free,” from Ava DuVernay’s Netflix documentary, “13th.” With his fresh Emmy for outstanding original music and lyrics), Common becomes the first rapper to ever win an Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar.
“I want to thank God first and foremost,” Common said to Deadline. “Any time I get a chance to work with Ava DuVernay it leads to something positive, something strong.”
Common’s journey toward the history books began in 2002 with his Grammy-winning collaboration with Erykah Badu titled, “Love of My Life.” In 2015, he picked up an Oscar for “Glory,” his track with John Legend from the “Selma” soundtrack.
If he pulls away with a Tony Award, he would join the likes of Whoopi Goldberg and Rita Moreno as the 13th entertainer to do achieve the EGOT.
