DC Hip Hop Veterans Descend on Anacostia Arts Center

*Anacostia Arts Center is closing out the first season of All The Way Live Tuesdays (ATWLT) with a lineup of DC heavy hitters!

The series kicked off in February with the phenomenal talent of Wes Felton, followed by duo Milk$, the eclectic styles of Jay Mills and the politically powered WOLM; Leftist had the party dancing as did Dior Ashley Brown and the dAb Band.

Fresh off the heels of the Shaolin Jazz series, DJ 2-Tone Jones precluded the closing cypher.

Closing Cypher will take place Tuesday, September 26 at 7PM at the Anacostia Arts Center 1231 Good Hope Road SE Washington DC 20020. The event is FREE and open to the public. Local vendors will be available.

All The Way Live Tuesdays brings to the stage Uptown XO, DJ RBI, Slimkat78, Head Roc and presenting a live performance from WPGC’s own Joe Clair.

Host, comedian, radio personality and on-air veteran, Joe Clair is no stranger when it comes to Washington, D.C. This native of Seat Pleasant, MD is the current host of WPGC’s Joe Clair Morning Show. Clair got his start on HBO’s famed Def Comedy Jam before gaining national notoriety as host of BET’s famed show Rap City, where he introduced the world to Hip Hop and rap superstars and was most notably known as the last person to interview Hip Hop icon Notorious B.I.G.

Alfred “THE MC” Duncan

Maryland native Alfred “the MC” Duncan is the lead vocalist for the DC based band Mambo Sauce, he wrote and performed their hit single “Welcome to DC” a popular tune at DC professional sporting events. Duncan is a two-time Grammy nominated artist for his contributions to two of SOLA’s album’s in 2014 and 2015 as well as an Emmy nominated narrator for the PBS show: “The District”.

His most recent notoriety comes from his planning and execution of his very own wedding. The hashtag #ForeverDuncan became an instant viral sensation with over 50 million views. Duncan has since createdDuncan Man Planning an event planning agency dedicated to helping men create forever moments for their significant other.

UPTOWN XO

DMV native Jaamal ‘Uptown XO’ Walton has been rooted in music from birth. Raised by musically inclined parents, XO is a trained piano and trumpet player, church choir singer and drummer.

Determined to succeed with his peers such as Wale, he was present at every local Hip Hop event with mixtape in hand. It was this passionate drive that caught the attention of Oddisee and yU, together they formed the highly-respected DMV group Diamond District. They received local and international attention with the 2009 track In The Ruff. With a personal mission to be more involved in his community, Uptown XO has worked alongside the late Christopher Barry, Councilman Trayon White and others to ensure his community is not overlooked.

DJ RBI

A longtime professional working in areas of youth development, DJ RBI has taught and mentored students with the DC Commission of The Arts & Humanities and non-profits: Words, Beats, & Life INC and Guerilla Arts INK.

He has collaborated on projects for Kev Brown, yU, Priest Da Nomad, and Surock to name a few. DJ RBI regularly tours and performs with acts including Dumi Right & Zimbabwe Legit, Asheru, Ethan Spalding & The TrapRock Family, Sound Of The City Band, and 90’s Hip Hop legend YZ.

In theater, he is a creative partner and performer with the Hip Hop Theatre act, Hueman Prophets and is a regular associate of The Hip Hop Theatre Festival/ Hi-Arts (responsible for producing the One Mic Fest w/ The Kennedy Center).

In radio and in the nightlife circuit, he is a producer/DJ/host for “ILL Street Grooves” and “Capitol ILL” on WPFW 89.3 and is a principle member of the DMV-based DJ collective, Diamond Cutterz.

A graduate of the renowned Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Zachariah ‘Slimkat78’ McGant is a notable DC producer. His first live performances began between classes, over the schools PA system. He continued to perfect his craft, releasing his first tracks in the mid 2000s.Soundfreakers Vol1 was the beat mixtape in 2010 which paved the way for producing tracks for the likes of Maimouna Youssef, Bilal Salaam, Muhsinah, Nicolas Ryan Grant, and others.

Slimkat78 partnered his talents with another illustrious DC artist and lifelong friend, yU to create The 1978ers, releasing the popularWithout A Clue, Far and One-Nine-7T-8.

Head Roc

Head Roc, the founder of Chocolate City Rocks! and DC Arts Activist has earned the title of Mayor of DC Hip-Hop. He has an opinion and isn’t shy about voicing it. He served as the first Arts Ambassador to the Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts (WALA), he is an occasional Washington City Paper and Huffington Post contributor, and has sounded off on everything from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to Walmart and even Wale.

Anacostia Arts Center’s Head Roc has taken his passion for art and activism and produced a clothing line to further promote his message. With almost twenty-five years in the game, Head Roc and his funk/rock/soul band GODISHEUS has performed internationally and locally, collaborating with prestigious institutions like the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts.

The closing cypher is sure to be a ferocious cypher of lyrical mastery. Anacostia Arts Center was recently noted by DC Music Download as “not just a thriving hub for visual arts but live music too.”  All The Way Live Tuesdays is truly a showcase of the Districts diverse and vibrant creative economy. Anacostia Arts Center
