*OK Lakers fans, there’s finally some really good news emanating from Staples Center.
Y’all ready for this? Kobe Bryant will be the first Laker in team history to have BOTH of his jersey numbers (8 and 24) retired. jersey numbers retired in December.
The much anticipated ceremony is going down on December 18, before the Lakers play the Golden State Warriors.
You may also be wondering which # would get the VIP treatment. Well, according to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, the answer is both of ’em!.
Making that decision was a pretty easy call because Bryant dominated in both numbers … winning 3 NBA championships in #8 (2000, 2001, 2002) and 2 in #24 (2009, 2010).
So what does Kobe have to say about this momentus occasion?
“The Lakers have bestowed a huge honor on me and I’m grateful for the fans’ enthusiasm around this game.”
“As a kid growing up in Italy, I always dreamed of my jersey hanging in the Lakers rafters, but I certainly never imagined two of them”
Lakers owner Jeanie Buss added, “Kobe’s jerseys are taking their rightful home next to the greatest Lakers of all time.”
Magic Johnson added, “Kobe was one of the greatest Lakers and NBA players of all-time and he’s definitely on my Mount Rushmore. I look forward to seeing BOTH of his jerseys be retired and celebrating this special day with Kobe and his family.”
BTW, Rick Fox kinda called this … predicting a double number retirement way back in 2015.
