*Former Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots wide receiver Terry Glenn has died. The former NFL player was the victim of a fatal car accident in Irving, Texas on the morning of Monday, November 20. Glenn was 43.

According to Irving Police Department spokesperson Chelsey Jones, the accident took place at 12:18 AM. Glenn had been driving on Highway 114 with his fiancee, Verina LeGrand, when he traveled outside of the eastbound lane. The vehicle collided with the concrete barrier separating the local and express lanes.

Glenn, who’d been ejected from the vehicle, was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. It was there that Glenn died at 12:52 AM. LeGrand survived the accident and is being treated for minor injuries.

Between 20 to 50 million people are injured in vehicle accidents every year worldwide. Many of these accidents are often the result of substandard road conditions, which cause approximately one-third of all highway fatalities.

American roads are sometimes neglected or improperly repaired, but distracted drivers, drunk drivers, and winter weather also cause thousands of accidents each year.

An autopsy for Glenn will be performed by the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s office. The cause of the accident is still under investigation. Irving Police are unsure whether Glenn and LeGrand were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Glenn played up to 12 seasons in the NFL. Six of those seasons were with the New England Patriots, who chose Glenn in the first round of the draft back in 1996.

He won the rookie record with the Patriots after catching 90 receptions for 1,132 yards in a single season. Glenn also made the Pro Bowl in 1999 after catching 69 passes for 1,147 yards. However, one of Glenn’s most renowned moments was on October 14, 2001, when Glenn caught the very first touchdown pass of Tom Brady’s career.

“We were shocked and deeply saddened by today’s news that Terry Glenn died in an auto accident,” said Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots. “Terry was one of the most gifted receivers we have ever had.”

Glenn was traded to the Green Bay Packers in 2002. He was traded once more in 2003 to the Dallas Cowboys where he played for five seasons. Glenn would finish the 2005 season with the Cowboys with the most receiving yards in his career since 1999. Before playing pro ball, Glenn played with Ohio State University.

“Terry was someone that we all enjoyed very much in his time with the Cowboys,” said Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys. “He was a gentle and kind-hearted young man. We are all terribly saddened by this news of his passing.”

Glenn signed a $20 million five-year deal with the Cowboys in 2006. Compared to the $30,000 salary of a security guard, Glenn would be earning $4 million a year. However, the wide receiver retired from the NFL in 2007 when the Cowboys dismissed him due to concern over a knee injury.

Despite this setback, Glenn continued to move forward. In 2016, he founded the 83 Kids Foundation, a non-profit organization designed to help potential foster care parents and to bring awareness to the challenges faced by children in foster care.

Glenn is survived by his fiancee and five children. The date for the memorial service is yet to be announced.
