Weekend Watch: ‘Star Wars: Last Jedi’ is a First

Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is a first on moviegoers’ tickets list.

It picks up where “The Force Awakens” left off with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) atop a mountain on the island of Ach-To.

That “…Awakens” also introduced Finn (John Boyega), who like Capt. Steven Hiller (Will Smith) in “Independence Day,” helped save the race from doom and destruction.

To say “Jedi” falters at times and is too long would be pointless because die hard fans will see it for the mind boggling special effects, plot twists, legendary returns and the awesome new crop of talent. Although Skywalker is a centerpiece in the story line, Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) will tug even harder at audiences’ hearts because Fisher’s untimely death brings an added depth to her role. Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), the son of Darth Vader nor his master Snoke (Andy Serkis), can evoke the fear elicited by James Earl Jones’ menacing breathing and voice as the demised Dark side villain.

In this Lucasfilm‘s saga, Rey (Daisy Ridley) develops her newly discovered abilities with the guidance of Skywalker. Meanwhile, the Resistance prepares to do battle with the First Order.

Directed and written by Rian Johnson, the film also stars Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Benicio Del Toro, Domhnall Gleeson, and Gwendoline Christie.

Ferdinand

Ferdinand,” a fun loving bull that rather smell the roses than fight or be sent off to the chopping block, is captured after being mistaken for a ferocious beast. Torn from his home, Una (Gina Rodriguez), and farm family friends, Ferdinand (John Cena) is determined to return to his humans, furry and fine-feathered friends.

Aimed at denouncing bullying and prejudices based on appearances, “Ferdinand” is also family fun oriented. The twerking by the bull in a dance off is definitely aimed at the adults in the audience.

Directed by Carlos Saldanha, other voices include Kate McKinnon, Anthony Anderson, Daveed Diggs, Sally Phillips, and Boris Kodjoe.
