Oprah Winfrey Teams with Starbucks for New Chai Tea Line

Starbucks CEO Jeff Schultz and Oprah Winfrey introduce Teavana Oprah Chai tea

*Oprah Winfrey has expanded her vast empire to include tea, thanks to a new partnership with Starbucks.

During the coffee retailer’s annual shareholder’s meeting, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz joined the media mogul on stage to announce the creation of Oprah’s own tea line, Teavana Oprah Chai, to be sold in Starbucks and Teavana stores across the U.S. and Canada beginning April 29.

Starbucks will make a donation for each product sold to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation to benefit educational opportunities for youth.

“I looove tea,” said Winfrey. “My daily tea ritual is a vital part of my morning. Savory and spicy chai, with its deep flavor, has long been a favorite of mine. When Howard Schultz offered to have me come into the Starbucks tasting room and create my very own tea blend, I thought that sounded like such a unique opportunity and fun to the tenth power. To share one of my favorite things with the rest of the world and support youth education at the same time is truly the perfect blend.”

Oprah personally developed the tea with Teavana’s leading “teaologist” Naoko Tsunoda. It features an infusion of cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and cloves, blended with loose-leaf black tea and rooibos, and will be made available in handcrafted latte and loose-leaf tea formats.

Schultz stated: “With the introduction of Teavana Oprah Chai, we are going to elevate the tea experience in the same way we did for coffee. Partnering with Oprah Winfrey in the creation of this distinctive and remarkable tea is a strong next step forward in accomplishing this objective, while also giving back in a meaningful way through the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation. I am personally humbled to work with such an inspirational leader and visionary who shares so many of our core values and beliefs. I truly believe that, together, we will set the bar for a world-class tea experience at Starbucks and Teavana.”

‘The Game’s’ Brittany Daniel Reveals Secret Battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma

the-game-season-5-20

*Actress Brittany Daniel, whose character Kelly Pitts returned to BET’s “The Game” Tuesday night, opens up to People magazine about being diagnosed with cancer three years ago and how she fought her way back to good health.

It started in the summer of 2011, when the actress was preparing for another season of “ The Game” and looking forward to moving into a new home. But after experiencing excruciating back pain, night sweats and flu-like symptoms, she decided to see a doctor.

The news the actress received was unexpected and grim: she had stage IV non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

“It happened so suddenly,” she tells the latest issue of People. Almost immediately after her diagnosis, Daniel – who starred opposite her twin sister, Cynthia, on the 1994 teen drama Sweet Valley High – started chemotherapy. During her recovery, she and her mom moved into Cynthia’s guest house. The rallying of her inner circle, and the work of her physician Dr. Julie Dunhill, gave Daniel hope and the continued strength to soldier forward.

“There is no way I would have ever gotten through this without my family,” Daniel tells the website. “My family is everything to me and I feel like they saw me through this.”

Though she originally wanted to keep her situation a private matter (she only told a small group of family and friends), Daniel – now healthy and cancer-free – realized her story could help others going through a similar situation.

“I want to let people know it is absolutely possible to get through something like this,” she says. “I want people to know they are not alone.”

As for the future, she’s thrilled to be back on “The Game” (BET, Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT) and possibly starting a family of her own.

Adds Daniel: “I am just trying to enjoy every day.”

OWN’s ‘Our America’ Returns for 5th and Final Season in May

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network

*As OWN programming turns toward more advertiser-friendly entertainment fare, the network announced Tuesday that “Our America with Lisa Ling” will be cancelled following its upcoming fifth season, to premiere Thursday, May 29 at 10/9c.

The series, which probed underreported stories across the United States, will spend its 10-episode final bow exploring gun violence in Philadelphia, ADHD in American families, the largest foster care system in the country, criminal informants, the HIV epidemic in the African American community and the story of a woman held captive for months.

Also, Lisa will follow-up on past stories, including the three individuals on personal journeys to change their gender, and two young women originally featured on an episode about teen mothers. In addition, she revisits the controversial case of registered sex offender, Travis Iosue, who spent 16 years in prison for touching the breast of a young girl.

“It has been an honor to be part of the launch and success of OWN and I am exceptionally grateful to the network and to Oprah for allowing me to produce the show of my dreams,” said Ling in a statement. “I have never been more proud of anything I’ve ever done in my career and hope that our shows have enriched people and provoked them to think differently and with compassion about those who inhabit Our America.”

The final season will kick off with an episode titled “Fighting Satan.” Many Americans believe that the devil is alive and well, which has sparked a growing movement in churches to fight him head on. Ling travels to Georgia and Florida to visit ministries that practice “deliverance” – where faith and the power of Christ are called upon to cast Satan’s demons from the emotionally tormented.
