The American Black Film Festival/ABFF held its second annual semi-finalist comedy competition at the Comedy Store in Hollywood last night.

8 Comedians had the opportunity to showcase their artistic ability while several key celebrities and talent agents judged their efforts.

Comedian Red Grant hosted the event and made his comedic commentary on current events like the clippers and entertained the audience with hip-hop songs between each set. Mike Smuv DJ’d the event playing tunes from Chris Brown to Rap Artist Future.

The comics who were competing for that final spot were Amberia Allen, Brian Doby, Charla Lauriston, Greg Coleman, Hadiyah Robinson (will also appear on this season’s Comic View), Joe Fox, Jon Laster, Sam J, and Schmitty B.

After the competition four finalists were chosen to move on to the festival as they will receive a trip to 2014 ABFF, in NYC, June 19-22, where they will perform live before the festival audience, for the chance to win an audition with HBO. They were comedians Jon Laster, Hadiyah Robinson, Amberia Allen, and Schmitty B.

Motorola 360: Redesigning the Modern Day Time Piece – It’s About Time

moto watch

Moto360 utilizing Google Now

This week Motorola announced the debut of its newest addition to its product line. The Moto360, a stylish, innovative smartwatch that combines form and function.

The Smart Watch which was announced shortly after Google announced Android Wear look to be very promising. Most SmartWatches that have been debuted in the last year or so are square and clunky or offer minimum,  often battery draining or lack luster designs that come off as cheap .

Moto360 plans to change all that. Not only is the design fashionable, its functions and color screen set it on par with some of the most fashionable watches out out there.

It’s not coming out till this summer but the basic form and function in the concept video featured below show the capabilities and potential of this device.

If you have an Android or iPhone device and utilize Google Now.. this watch will help you view the information you would usually see on your phone, on the watch. There are voice commands that allow you to do everything from reading and sending a text to seeing whose called you when your phone was sitting in your pocket. I can sum it up in one word  #awesome.

Of course there are things we don’t know yet about the watch.  Battery life is one of those things.  As we have seen in our mobile devices, the phone is only as good as its battery. However, the one thing that makes me not worry about this issue so much is the Motorola has made excellent strides in battery life with its proprietary technology.  So I can only hope and pray that this same tech will be placed into the watches.

If you have a little more time on your hands.. Feel free to watch the Google hangouts. Feel free to check out the YouTube Video below

I am looking forward to the possibilities… aren’t you.

The Top 3 Phones of 2013

nexus 5*Hello Technology Lovers and Fellow Gadgeteers. Happy New Year!

In this edition of #Gigabits,  we are going to touch on some of the top mobile devices of 2013. Yeah.. i know.. its 2014. But if you are in the market for a new smartphone and Santa didn’t stick one in your stocking. You might want to consider these choices

iphone 5siPhone 5s- Rated the overall best smartphone in 2013 by BGR.com, this phone definitely was worth the wait.  Apple made the most of its flagship by adding a better camera, a fingerprint scanner, and a new Gold edition. Under the hood, Apple increased the speed and also added a 64 bit processor. Most of us don’t know what that means, but it basically means the iPhone 5s can graphics faster which helps in playing games without any noticeable lag.  Although it isn’t the cheapest phone you can buy. Best Buy is offering it for 75.00 off the original 199.99 price tag, so you can snag one for 124.99 (with a 2 year contract of course) which is actually relatively good. Although for all the new photos you might be taking I would recommend the 32GB model which is 100.00 buck more. Over the holidays, Apple made a phenomenal commercial that seemed to touch everyone that watched it. If you haven’t seen it yet, here it is…

http://youtu.be/ImlmVqH_5HM

moto xMoto X- if you not an apple user, the next phone I would recommend would be the Moto X.  Google bought Motorola a few years back and this phone is the lovechild of that merger. There are two special features i’d like to mention in discussing this phone. A. Touchless Control. – yes .. you can now just talk to your phone and it will respond . All you have to say is “ Ok Google” and it will follow your every command. You don’t even to touch it. Just tell it what to do .. So all you Star Trek fans can rejoice. Another great thing about this phone is that it’s customizable! You can create your own version of the phone and it will ship to you in about 4 days! All you have to do is visit www.motomaker.com and you can design and create your own phone. Also its manufactured right here at the Motorola plant in the good old USA. Just in time for the new year, the price of the Moto X without a contract is 399.00 for the 16GB version. If you want a contract.. I think you can get this one for about 99.00 through all four major carriers, Sprint, Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. Check out the video below to see how Google Now  and Touchless Controls work.

nexus5

Nexus 5-  Every year Google creates a phone to showcase what Android can do, this year was no exception. The Nexus 5 debuted on October 31st and packed a ton of features (albeit not touchless control) in a sleek device. The best thing about the nexus brand is that it usually receives the latest build of Android dubbed “KitKat” before any of the other Android phones do. Another great thing about this phone is the price. The 16GB model is only 349.00  and the 32GB is 399.00, (plus tax ,of course). This is my personal phone. I constantly switch between the iPhone and the Nexus every year and have also had my pro’s and cons about both, but I chose to wait until next year to see what the iPhone 6 has in store . It can be purchased on Sprint, Verizon or T-Mobile or unlocked just by visiting http://www.google.com/nexus/5/ . Check out the promotional video below.

The BET Hip Hop Awards 2013 Didn’t Hold Back the Punches

kendrick lamar (boxing gloves)*Tuesday night, BET premiered its 9thth annual BET Hip Hop Awards event that was taped in the ATL last month.

The star studded event hosted by Snoop Dogg honors artists who, as Drake is infamously quoted, “started from the bottom.”

One of the most notable memories of this award show was new rapper Kendrick Lamar’s performance in which he went straight for the jugular dissing none other than Drake.  Drake, who won four awards including Best Hip Hop collabo, Best Club Banger, Best Hip Hop Video and The People’s Champ award, was not in attendance at this year’s awards show and hasn’t yet responded, but I’m sure there will be some words exchanged as Hip Hop always seems to thrive off of controversy.

MC Lyte was honored by receiving the “I AM HIP HOP” awards by none other than female rapper, Eve, for pioneering the Hip Hop game with her lyrics and dedication for making Hip Hop a credible genre in the music industry.

One of the best things about the Hip Hop awards are always the cyphers, a time where rappers get back to the basics and spit lyrics over a beat. This year was no exception. New artists as well as veterans took to the lyrical showcase to show their freestyle talent. Lil Kim made a surprise appearance to let the rap game know, she hasn’t lost her touch.  ASAP Rocky, Jon Conner and even the Hollywood’s House Husband stars appeared to make their memorable name in Hip Hop History.

Bone Thugs and Harmony made a surprise appearance performing one of their infamous songs, “Tha Crossroads” which brought everyone back to 1995 when the song was released. You can always expect something special at the award show and this year was no exception.

Overall, the BET Hip Hop Awards has come to be the premier event for hip hop. Next year, I’m sure it will be just as good , if not better since, BET always has a way of outdoing itself

Take a few minutes and review the complete list of winners. Also check out the link to watch the Awards show on BET’s website. http://www.bet.com/shows/hip-hop-awards.html.

iPhone 5c

GoodBye InSYnC … Hello Gigabits

iPhone 5c*Good day EURweb.com readers, Thanks for reading.

I wanted to take the time to let you know that the current column on technology InSYnC is undergoing reconstructive surgery and a major overhaul.

As of today the column formally known as InSYnC will be renamed Gigabit.

There are a couple of reasons for these changes. Number 1. It seems that every day the number of technology breakthroughs in mobile phone increases significantly.  A few years ago there was only Apple’s iPhone, Blackberry, and flip phones galore.

Now… there are more phones and more varieties of phones than one can name in a single setting. As the Gadget Guy its been my mission to educate you on a variety of technologies that are currently in the market. THe good thing about this restructure is that it’s not just limited to Tuesdays and Thursdays. Unlike InSYnC, Gigabits will be available to you as early as the same day that the news is released. We have to make sure that you are aware of the latest and greatest in technology.. especially since you probably spend a hefty penny on a phone or some type of mobile computing device at least once or twice a year.

I thought today would be a great day to talk iPhone. As many of you are aware. Yesterday, Apple did their annual release of their baby, the iPhone. A phone that literally revolutionized Cell phones.

Introducing iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s. Yep that’s right two different models!

The iPhone 5c comes in several color options and basically runs like last year’s iPhone 5 with the same guts and a plastic body

The iPhone 5s comes in three color options, White Graphite and GOLD. Yes Gold.. (I don’t think it’s real gold though, although that would be nice) but I know there will be a couple of people that have to buy the Gold model just cause…

This is the first year that both iPhones will be available through all four major US Carriers; AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile at the same time September 20th. Pre-Ordering this device might be a good idea, since iPhones tends to sell out rather quickly during the first couple of days after they’re released.

As far as pricing goes. The 5c will cost 99.00 for the 16GB version. 199.00 for the 32GB version. The 5s will cost 199.00 for the 16GB model, 299.00 for the 32GB model, and 399.00 for the 64GB model. All on each carrier’s contract of course.

Oh and if you just want an iPhone., the iPhone 4s that came out two years ago with the smaller screen is now FREE on contract.

InSYnC: Google Maps Finally Released for the iPhone

apple & google logos meshed*Unless you’ve been under a rock for the last few months you know that Apple screwed up royally when it decided to abandon Google Maps in its iOS 6 software for the iPhone.

The move wasn’t one that shocked the tech community as Apple and Google had been going at it every since Android was released back in 2008, but many questioned the move and whether it would be best for the end-user.

Apple is great at many things; mainly handling music and movies. But data isn’t one of those things. Google’s whole philosophy is based on data.  With that information, Google was able to create a Maps application that basically gave accurate directions to almost any place in the world.  Google Maps was baked into Apples’ software and because somewhat of an alternative to turn-by-turn navigation since Apple didn’t yet have a native application that ran on its operating system.

With this release of iOS 6 all of that changed. Apple decided to ditch the popular maps software in favor of its own application called Maps. Everyone at first was excited, finally after 5 years, turn-by-turn directions were coming to the iPhone. When it was released in September however, things weren’t so pretty. The application while great for a majority of users, lacked specific data that it needed to make it revolutionary (as all apple products have been lately). It worked, but it was no where near as accurate as the previous Google Maps application. There was also no transit information which meant that many of users who rely on public transportation couldn’t rely on Apple Maps to get the job done. The world went crazy…

Fast forward to last night, 12.12.12 at about 5:42 PM, I read a report that a new Google Maps app would be finally released to the iPhone and iPod Touch   At around 12 midnight PST, I finally was able download the application and boy was I impressed. Turn-by-Turn navigation, full fledged Google Maps, and an innovative seamless experience welcomed me as I tapped on the newly downloaded icon on my home screen.

While the app itself is great, there are some things that will need improving and it’ll come, in due time. 1.  The Google Application isn’t native, meaning that the default app when you search directions, even in all of the Google Applications, will still be Apple Maps. However, Google made it known that developers can program their application to use Google Maps instead of Apple Maps, and that they will update all of Google’s iOS applications in the near future. I’m sure, if you have an iPhone, you will see application updates over the next few weeks that will reflect that change.

2. Currently, there is no offline maps option. It probably will come, but for now, you are still gonna have to have to some type of data connection in order for Google Maps to work. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is update in early

For those of you who haven’t had the chance to download the application. It’s Free and it works on all iPhones or IPod Touches that have at least iOS 5.1. This means that if you have an iPhone 4, although you can’t get Apple Maps on it, you can get Google Maps, and in my opinion, its way better than Apples Maps. Feel free to peruse the App Store on your iPhone and iPod Touch as soon as you finish reading and liking this article.2013.
