Comment: I don't know about anyone else but I think it's deplorable that he'd be nominated for an IMAGE award of all things. The man calls himself the pied piper. Also, for Mfume to say his music is nominated and not the man is ridiculous. His lyrics haven't been uplifting since "I believe I can fly" I know I'll get slammed on this board but I'm sorry I cannot believe people still support him.

Name: Tre' - Chicago
Comment: EUR, the tone of this article makes you guys sound as though you're offended that someone is speaking out. I'm glad these organizations that want to shout from the (proverbial) rooftops that they represent Black people, are speaking out against R. Kelly. Even though he hasn't been found guilty by a jury...the mere "smell" of impropriaty should be enough to keep him away from the nomination process. It's amazing how members of the NAACP can justify an award nomination for a man accused of child molestation (a few times); as a mater of fact, I was appalled that Jesse Jackson, Sr. gave R. Kelly an award less than 2 weeks ago for excellence. These "so called" leaders either need to stand-up to the wrongs within the Black community (all of the wrongs, not just the ones committed by White America), or stop shouting that they represent the Black voice.

Name: Tre' >Mecca
Comment: I agree with you Mecca. I had a disagreement 2 weeks ago with a couple of folks who say, they buy his music, but don't support him as a person. I told them, that's IDIOTIC!!! Everytime someone buys one of his records, they're ultimately putting money into his pocket, which supports him anyway. The radio station here is just as repulsive; WGCI-FM (supposed to be the #1 urban station in the country) plays R. Kelly's music as though he owns shares in the company. Somebody at 'GCI must be taking payoff's to play as much of his music as they do. This guy has been charged several times with child molestation, and even though he paid the accusers off, the threat is still there....yet 'GCi let's him host concerts for kids, they use him at festivals, at rallies, and they play every new song he releases. The "Black Leaders" need to boycott that station!

Name: Quite simply
Comment: If the committee is honoring an album written, produced & performed by an alleged child pornographer, you are theretofore honoring the alleged child pornographer. If the NAACP Image Awards is all about upstanding, positive influences, then Mr. Robert Kelly should be eliminated from the nomination category.

Name: Lavender to Tre & Mecca
Comment: I totally agree with both of you. The way they have lifted this man up and made is album number one after what he did makes me physically ill. It just goes to show you how sick people are because if they can still support someone who urinates on a child then they are truly sick. It always bothered me that people just acted like he did absolutely nothing. I am so glad that people are protesting the image awards. And Mfume is more ignorant then I thought.....How does he sound? His music is up for an award not his image. He sounds like a d**n fool. If that is the way he is thinking then they need to find a new leader for the NAACP. People are just as crazy and sick as R Kelly is!!

Name: mayday
Comment: Hhmm, can't argue with you folks today. I believe the nomination will be rescinded. I didn't purchase the "Chocolate Factory" but I won't lie and say that I don't groove to a couple of the songs on the CD, however, R. Kelly deserves an image nomination as much as Kobe Bryant does.

Name: My Right
Comment: I support him. That's my right. I made the decision that I was going to and I am until shown some irrefutable proof. (Not the tape. If you watched it, don't that make you just as guilty?) Now, what are you gonna do? Cuss me out? Tell me I'm wrong and I'm going to hell? Whatever. I don't know if any of you have seen anything about it, but there was a man in MD who served close to 30 years for a crime that he didn't commit. Some of you would have probably said that he was guilty too. As I said, Irrefutable proof!

Name: Support..
Comment: I have to agree with Mfume, it is the music we purchase not him for who he is. When you go to the store and your in a check out line do you not purchase because the owner is married and sleeping around, selling dope out the back or because the cashier works during the day and is a whore at night. No, so why judge him because his business is out in the streets. I bet a few of you have made babies, made love or had sex to many of songs. I will continue too buy and download his music although I don't support his acts which IS "REALLY NONE OF MY BUSINESS OR YOURS!!"

Name: Tweety
Comment: The name of the award is the IMAGE award and he definitely does not have a positive image.

Name: BROYE
Comment: I don't expect any different activity from a group that still considers themselves "colored." It seems that all you have to do is be Black and be a celeb to be nominated for an image award. Remember when Martin Lawrence won an award? Please...The NAACP needs to admit that nominating R. Kelly has nothing to do with image as much as it is a marketing move to get more young Black people to support the NAACP. After all, The membership is getting older...

Name: face it
Comment: if soul train can give ashanti the aretha franklin award dont be surprised if the image award goes to this perv.

Name: > My Right
Comment: You are correct that it is your right to buy his music. There is nothing illegal about it. But when you say you want irrefutable proof that he did it, then you must not have seen the video. And yes I saw the video. I am not guilty of anything. If I was looking at the tape to get some jollies I would be guilty. I was looking at the tape to judge if it was him, if it was an underage girl, if he performed lewd and lascivious acts, and the answer is YES!! Anyone who saw the tape and believes he is innocent must believe that someone had $40 Million dollars laying around to pay to Industrial Light and Magic to fake the film. How can you say the tape is not proof. Tape has been used in countless cases to convict criminals when it is clear that they are participating in a crime. And when you see R. Kelly 3 feet from the camera lens as he adjusts the focus, he's pretty much the guy in the film (no edits, no cuts, just one long camera shot where he never leaves the frame)

Name: TG-East Saint Louis
Comment: Well, i dont personally agree with the nomination, but he is innocent until proven guilty thus far. And to add Roman Polanski, filmmaker who directed "The Pianist" won the Academy Award and he is a fugitive from justice for raping a 13 year old girl. He lives in Europe and if he comes into the United States will be arrested immediately...White people looked over his transgressions and awarded him despite that he has had a warrant for his arrest for 30 years. Not to say that its right but black people arent the only ones with blind loyalty to their own.

Name: It is not he that is being nominated, it is the album by him
Comment: What kind of bullshiznit is that!

Name: I saw
Comment: the tape and it is him...truly digusting.

Name: To Mr. Right
Comment: You are right you have a right to support a child molestor but what does that say about you as a person. What does it say about our community. Mr.Kelly married an underage girl. The wedding certicate was found by Vibe. Mr. Kelly is on a videotape that as been seen by thousands as well as the law enforcement community. The guy has a rep in the entertainment industry for surrounding himself with young girls. What more proof do you and the NAACP need. They are giving him award to get people to watch the program. What is your excuse.

Name: Our community is SICK
Comment: What bothers me most about our people is that we make excuses and support bad behavior in our own communities. The right to listen to his music and "groove " to it is your perogative, but the issue we are discussing is a nomination for an NAACP IMAGE award. NOt a billboard music award or a Grammy!!! If in fact you are honiring him for the body of work he has produced then the IMAGE awards is not the place for that. These so called leaders of the black community need to stop picking and choosing what battles they decide to fight. Whether he is guilty or not, the man as been charged not on just one but 21 counts. SO is it ok for us to be outraged when white people commit crimes against us and our communities , but it is ok when our black people do it to each other? When will we learn to fight as vehemently against wrong doings in our own communites as much as we fight against white folks? Take a stand for justice in ALL areas folks, not just when whitey does us wrong.

Name: SweetThang
Comment: If R. Kelly doesn't deserve an image award, then Mo'nique loud, big azz doesn't deserve one for The parkers. They are embarassment. Most importantly, they need to change the name of the award from "image award" to the NAACP award b/c they have given out awards to persons that do not display a very positive image.

Name: Princess to>Tre and Support
Comment: Tre -- I agree with you 100%. You can't buy the music and support the artist with money if you don't agree with the actions. We have to start holding our people accountable for their actions. As for the other writer who says that she/he supports R.Kelly -- We live in America and that is your God Given Right to support whoever you want and no one is going to cuss you out about it but remember this, for every one person in jail that is innocent (and if you ask them, they are all innocent) there is a person walking around FREEEEEEEE, and we all know the person with the most money usually wins. To SUPPORT -- one question, would you support R. Kelly as much if he were a white artist???? or do you support him because he is a "hard working brother". Just thought I would put that out there

Name: I'm sorry...
Comment: I don't need irrefutable anything after watching that tape. He did it. But I'll say this, he's doing a damn good job at acting innocent. Denying that it's him on tape and still making sexually explicit songs and videos. Dude has like 4 albums done--and I'm just speculating here--but that sounds like a man who knows he's going away. If it's not our business, don't be stupid and tape it. Especially if you're a celebrity. Whatever you do or say can be detremental to your career period. And no, I won't support a person who does things like this by buying there music ultimately says it's ok...keep doing what you're doing. I personally think R. is a musical genious, but he is not above the law.

Name: excuses
Comment: what kills me is the people that are talking about R. Kelly are the main ones that have seen the tape and give a lame excuse of why you watched it. You knew from the news what was on the tape why did you have to see it for yourself to see if it was him. You looked at it for your own jollies and committed a crime if it was him with a underage girl.

Name: A fan of Rs music BUT......
Comment: I don't think he should be nominated. If the NAACP Image awards do not accept gangsta rap, then they definately should not accept R. Kelly. A child molestor should be behind bars, not accepting IMAGE awards.

Name: re: >My Right
Comment: I don't need an excuse. And yes, I can say the tape isn't proof. Why? BECAUSE I HAVEN'T SEEN IT! You've spouted all this proof. Why isn't he in jail. They've got less than what you said on Michael and his trial is already underway.

Name: For you R. Kelly Supporters...
Comment: So if it was Eminem or Justin Timberlake or Tom Cruise or any other high profile white entertainer on tape with an underage Black girl doing the things R. Kelly was caught doing, would you still support them and buy their music and go see their movies? I don't think so...There would be protests and boycotts galore!! But when a Black star victimizes a Black girl, you look the other way, claim it's a setup, cry he's innocent until proven guilty, etc. As always, Black on Black is OK..just don't let the white man victimize us. (Everyone believed the Rodney King tape didn't they? No one was saying let's wait til the trial to see if they are guilty.)

Name: To Princess
Comment: It doesn't matter if he were white or black. I am from the South and here, there is a thing called Creole which is a mixture of all race, so it not for me to give anyone a hard time based on their ethnicity. luv Support.

Name: Corathm@aol.com
Comment: I think this is totally unfair. He has not been convicted of anything. NAACP of all people has already assumed he is guilty.

Name: >excuses from I'm Sorry
Comment: I'll have to admit, in the beginning I did not want to see it, but because of that pulsating curiousity--that most black folks have--(we call it being nosy)I couldn't help myself. But you know what, I'm glad I did watch it because I might be like some of the others on this board, still purchasing his records and taking up for him. Watching this video let me know for sure he did it and that he should be put away. It's proof that he's a very sick man and he needs help!

Name: > For you R. Kelly Supporters...
Comment: It's like Black girls are worth less or worthless (both would be accurate).

Name: >Mr. Right again
Comment: He's not in jail because he hasn't been to trial yet and because he is rich enough to post the high bail that would ordinarily keep anyone else in jail until the trial. And what do you mean the tape isn't proof until you've seen it?!! HUH?! I guess if I walk up on a man beating a woman and then close my eyes and plug up my ears, I guess that means he isn't beating her...Just because YOU haven't seen the R. Kelly tape doesn't mean that there is no proof that he did it...

Name: He's not in Jail because...
Comment: ... the prosecutors want to make sure they have an absolutely ironclad case so that another Rodney King trial doesn't happen. It will take time for them to %*$emble their case.

Name: ivory
Comment: all you ppl trying to defend him on crazy! even if he's nominated based solely on his music, his MUSIC STILL DOES NOT PORTRAY A POSITIVE IMAGE, ex. "i wanna stick my key in your ignition"...when i think of image awards, i think of honoring music that i'd feel comfortable letting my kids listen to...regardless of if he's guilty or not, his music does not promote positive images...

Name: Ugh. An opening for Black neo-CONs
Comment: Outfits like Project 21 are African-American astroturf: fake grass roots. There are no real Black folks behind them but an awful lot of right-wing money bankrolling this front group (and with right-wing and white citizen council type money mingling, this is doubly troubling). And O'Reilly has a recent history of racist statements. But this continued acceptance of a moral cretin like R. Smelly gives these types an opening. Not every song sung by an artist will be uplifting; not every scene portrayed by an actor wear a halo--if you're a real artist, describing or telling about the human condition or foibles, then that's allowed. But I'm so sick and damned tired of too many Black men and women absolving the guilt of this sexual predator. Enough already! We should value our young people more than that: both the young women who are often prey AND the young men who learn this is acceptable and not abominable, behavior.

Name: Just Saying
Comment: Now, I must say, that I have bought a few R. Kelly CDs in my time. However, I did not purchase Chocolate Factory. I agree, buying his CDs is supporting him financially. I agree with the majority of the comments here. I haven't seen the tape, but for the charges to be brought against him, 21 of them at that, says that there has to be something to substaniate this. Why is there a question about whether he should receive an award? It is an IMAGE award and his image has been tarnished by his own doing. This should not be the image that we want portrayed to our kids. That is saying we condone his actions...he is nominated if his music is nominated.

Name: sigh...
Comment: I am a 28 year old female member of rhe NAACP - DC Chapter. I was shocked and appalled when as I watched the O'Riley Factor. This is truly sad and for you all defending him please take a deep look into yourselves. Think about it, even if R. Kelly was not charged with this crime, his music of late is demeaning and for that alone he should not be considered for an image award. There are too many individuald that meet the criteria for this award and they select R. Kelly. I plan to withdraw my membership if Mr Mfume does not step up and apologize to us all.

Name: Holla At You Boy > SUPPORT
Comment: I believe that for the protection of our children, that anyone who has sex with minors is EVERYONES BUSINESS. Even though you cannot deny this man's obvious musical ability and great songs, whenever you purchase his songs you are supporting him and his lifestyle. Where do you think all the money he makes is going? It's going to fund his legal team or another payoff to a new young girl he wants to keep quiet. I know "Ignition" was hot and I like "Step in the name of love", but I would prefer to step in the name of my personal values and not purchase his music. And please an image award after these charges and the questionable lyrics in his music is just plain ludicrous.

Name: Definition of Pied Piper
Comment: The Pied Piper was a story about a man who played the flute in a way that put a spell on a number of children, so that they couldn't help following him. Please ask yourself, why would R.Kelly who is allegedly guilty of child molestation charges advertising that he is the "Pied Piper" I do not think Kobe and R. Kelly should be in the same sentence. Kobe is apologetic, remorseful for his actions, it is yet to be seen what the outcome will be. R.Kelly denies that he even did anything. I know for a fact he has issues because of the payoff he made to a close friend of mine...who started dating him when she was 15 and he was 24. It's actually the teenage girls that are being harmed by all this, they still think it's okay to "love" R. Kelly. Where are the parents to teach these girls otherwise. R. Kelly only did was parents allowed him to do. *sigh*

Name: X in DC
Comment: ITS A NOMINATION

Name: Red Beans
Comment: Can anyone tell me what exactly the NAACp is really doign for the advancement of people of color. I wonder hw is this achieved by celebrating a suspect pedofile on national TV. NAACP is supposed to be about upliftment, I bet every racist person is laughing at our expense. The is ridiculous. I am appaled. Seems to me that they are saying our girls being violated is acceptable. As a black woman, this kind of thing make me want to cry right now...tears of rage, hurt, anger, disgust and embarrassment. In the words of Sophia, in Color Purple, "Girl child ain't safe around a bunch of men."

Name: Truth Matters
Comment: Some folks just can't handle the truth. I'm not too fond of O'Reilly myself, but homeboy told the truth. Some folks just can't handle it. Especially if it's said by a white man. When are some of these COLORED people going to wake up? Yeah, I agree with O'Reilly on this one "where is the outcry from our community"? A lot of folks have gotten too comfortable in their life. One of the problems that is hurting our community is that a lot of these young people feel that they don't have to strive for anything or fight for anything. They feel that they have overcame. Well guess what, when us old rebel-rabbers from the '60's and '70's start hitting our graves, your children will be in a deep world of shyt. You know why? 'Cause folks these days aint stepping up to the ring to fight. Anything can be and will be shoved right down your throats. Not only by organizations like the NAACP, but by the man himself. I have no intention of supporting the NAACP in its current state. Not because of the R. Kelly thing, but because they seem to not have the backbone of their predecessors.

Name: Kelly's Fault.
Comment: A man is not what he does, true. However, one must understand there are consequences for all that you do. Some good, some not so good. Once Mr Kelly, decided to molest and manipulate young girls under 18, he opened up the flood gates of consequences. One should not be rewarded for hurting others. Sure some of his music sounds good, but that does not mean he should be held up and praised. Simply put he's in a position of leadership, to whom much is given, much is required. Instead he chose to as an adult man, have sex with underage girls. He should pay the piper!

Name: TJ the militant
Comment: It is true that while some of us may have stopped purchasing R's music, We still party to it. Same with Kobe, when the Lakers are playing on TNT I watch the LAKERS not the Kobies. Remember, one week after Kobe gave his crying game speech on national television he was given an ESPY award, but again the ESPYS have to do with athletic prowess and how much success you've accomplished in your particular sport. The NAACP awards are for Image as well as talent. R has talent but his image leaves alot to be desired.

Name: NAACP is a Joke
Comment: Unfortunately, the NAACP has dwindled down to nothing more than a platform for so called leader to make ends and get famous. All who feel likewise should write them about how we feel, I am!

Comment: the NAACP is so backwards. I can't believe they pull crap like this (and supporting that fat, coked-up, convicted rapist that died when he tried fight the police). They wonder why membership has not grown and why most young people have no interest in joining.

Kinda like Tiger has some issues but if the NAACP has to give out a golf award, your candidates are limited. But aren't there other talented brothers who would have made better choices?

Comment: This shows the NAACP has a double standard. They hold Hollywood (whites) to a different standard than their own people. NAACP preaches and protests that whites in Hollywood should portray blacks in positive light but then it's okay for them to nominate a pedofile.

Comment: Hey Choo..You sound like a representative for Mfume. I have been saying this for years. We as black people have been taking so many steps backwards. We have no black leaders. From Jesse Jackson to Sharpton..They are all race hustling poverty pimps. Mfume is no different. I have always asked when are they going to take a stand on all the negative rappers that our young kids are listening to today. Somewhere down the line we are going to have to take a STAND! Maybe now is the time.

Name: >>choo
Comment: Choo obviously devalues young black girls and is one of those negroes that want to blame the white man for everything he/she does wrong. Thanks but no thanks Jesse.

Name: I Think it's a disgrace
Comment: If the NAACP awards this pervert, it certainly does say a lot about the morals of black people today. No one can deny R. Kelly is a genius but he too has should a propensity for lying and he falls under the heading of pedophile. People if we want other races to respect us as a people we have got to stand up for what is right, not excuse it because he is black.

Name: The NAACP awards are a joke...
Comment: R. Kelly has sexual relationships with little girls. Period. What will it take? Maybe Mfume's grand-daughter has to be in a "relationship" with R. Kelly too, before he will make his organization take the morally correct stand.

Name: Good Music vs. Good Image
Comment: In my opinion, the NAACP was\is in a quandry over the R. Kelly nomination because on one hand, he makes good music (I personally looove that "Step" song he does, and I know alot of ya'll do too! Don't front :)). But on the other hand, his IMAGE is tainted by that tape that got out and the case he caught because of it. That's a tough decision to make for an awards show that wants to honor black ("colored"?) achievments in the arts. It almost seems like a no-brainer for all 'moralists', but a closer look at almost ALL of our legends would put you moralists in the same quandry. Just think, you might have to had to disqualify Marvin Gaye, Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Eddie Kendricks (The Temptations), Chaka Khan, and a whole slew of our other 'favorites' because of their private lives (Drug use, and everything else we do and don't know about them). So who and what does and would that leave us with?

Comment: Finally some voices of reason against the "pied Piper". I'm so sick of hearing black "women" defend this a$$hole. I honestly think is a defense mechanism when sister say "oh those girls knew what they were doing, or they just oversexed girls" I think they are hoping it sets them apart. I'm one of the good girls, and not in the same category as "those girls" (sluts & hoes). Any man who %*$!es on an underage girls, is pissing on womankind as a whole. This bastard has 2 daughters doesn’t he?? But some sisters are too blind to see that Rsmelly is laughing at them. Why you supporting a man that wouldn’t even want you?? Rsmelly don't want on coochie over 17, he likes it raw. But so called sisters keep buying his albums and supporting his legal fund. I don't get it! Black folks wake the hell up. Proof: he married a 15 year old Proof: he has a HISTORY of paying off girls (and their ABOMINATION of so called parents) Proof: its not a coincidence that he calls himself the pied piper. Can the man write the hell out of a song. Hell yes. But he needs to be stepping to jail.

Name: If it was your daughter
Comment: All these dummies that are on here supporting R Kelly are just silly! If this was their daughter or one of their relatives they wouldn't be defending him or maybe they would because some people are so sick. But like it was said before, because the girl is black it doesn't matter to anybody but I bet if she was white these same stupid brainwashed fools would be against him! Go figure!!

Name: ProudMom
Comment: I used to be an R. Kelly fan until his tape surfaced. I can honestly say I do not listen to any of his music; I do not go out to clubs, I change the radio station when one his songs start to play. I refuse to support those whose music, or acting roles are not positive, have a CLEAN record and not video tape floating on the internet. To you R. supporters, the words are IMAGE AWARDS, not Source Awards, not the Grammy Awards--his music does not promote a positive image, his personal life does not promote a positive image. My children will know that an IMAGE award are for African Americans who promote positive images amid all of the negativity about our race in the media. R. is musically talented and I do miss his music, but my children are more important to me and I can not teach them one thing and practice another. I hope they pull the nomination.

Name: Philly Girl (not a fan)
Comment: WHY ???? It is clearly stated that R.Kelly has been charged by the federal government with 21 counts of sexual misconduct involving minors. The purpose of the NAACP Image Awards is to honor African Americans who HAVE a POSITIVE image. No one can deny R. Kelly of his talents, however this is NOT the time to be giving him such a "prestigious" award to R.Kelly.......this does not look good for the black community or NAACP !! We CAN NOT blame the white man for this one !!! This time it is are own people !!

Comment: I am so glad someone has the same views and I have about R. Kelley. Even though he has not been convicted, it is a possibility that he has committed one of the worse violations placed upon a person that is to sexually abuse a minor. Albeit, she may have consented, may look older, etc. this does not excuse the fact that he used this child for his sexual fetish. He is no better than a rapist and a theft. I will not support his music, and question my friends their reasons as well. I would NOT want R. Kelly to be nominated and displayed as a representative for us that are African Americans. I truly wish that people would wake up and stop making it OK for anyone to violate others and win awards, WHY!!! – P.s. his music - Not worth an Image Award.

I realize these are characters, with the exception of Micheal Jordan, but these charachters are stereotypes and did not deserve image awards. The show is bullsh_t anyway. The same people win over and over. And for Kwesi to say that just because you're nominated doesn't mean you'll win was ignorant.

Comment: I can't believe Massie let O'Reilly "pimp" him like that. O'Reilly is only making them look stupid. He pimped a negro that wanted to be seen so that he can stand clear of any fireworks. Wake up my brother!! What is really funny about this is that R. Kelly has been charged not "CONVICTED". I thought you have to be "proven guilty" but unless you make a lot of money it's easier to go ahead and convict a person without due process of law. People are admiring R. Kelly for his creative work in the studio not his personal woes as a man who has problems. I hope they(O'Reilly and Massie) are "squeaky clean" because I will hate to read an article about their personal woes!

It just hurts my heart. These are the same type of people who know about family incest and prefer to sweep it under the rug at the expense of the child. African American's are in such a sorry state. My heart cries out for us... How did we take so many steps backward???? R-Kelly's talent is a given, does he deserve a grammy defintely, does he deserve an african american image award??? how could we even ask. Martin, Malcolm, Sojourner, and all the other people who died for us must be rolling in their graves...... u r some ignorant people....... the white man will never have to worry about us... we r far too much of a mess to ever get it together.

Comment: This is trully a sad day. It is amazing how quickly we forget. First let me say, that I totally disagree with the "nomination" of Kelly. I don't have any of his albums, and I certainly believe he is sick and disrespectful of women. Period. However, let me give you some insight on the process. Ballots are mailed out to individuals from all sectors of the commuity, the community at large submits these ballots and the nominations are drawn from these. The community nominated Kelly, not Mfume et al. There is a committee that oversees this process. The committee can ask for an executive decision against this, but that is equal to censorship, thus not allowing the community to express their will. If they do it for Kelly, they may have to do it every time people do not agree with a nominee. With that said. Why is it that "some" are quick to condem the NAACP, forget all the work that it has done and is doing, (an example: just this week the President of this United States bypassed the constitutional process for nominating a Supreme Court Judge, which is a life long appointment, by the way and placed Charles Pickering on the court, Pickering is a staunch racist and will be making decisions that will affect Black folks for the rest of his life. The NAACP along with many other civil and human rights organizations opposed Pickering. This is just one example, there are on-going efforts to repeal Rockefeller Drug Laws, Voter Registration and Education initiatives, health, housing and other key programs going on at this very moment. However I am going to dare say that most of the people here bashing are not even aware of these programs and worse yet are not doing much in your own communities to make life better for yourself and your neighbors. If you have taken the time to "investigate" the Kelly tape, why not take time to investigate whether or not the teachers in your childrens schools are certified, whether or not your police are profiling you, etc. etc. etc. Are all of you out there on the front lines for your communities... fighting the fine fight. Someone posted the Washington Bureau and the address for the NAACP Image Awards office. While you are submitting your complaints, why not give a few suggestions while your at it. The NAACP is not the be all to end all, but folks sure know how to find them when someone has violated their rights. "Don't talk about it... be about it!

Name: Just A Question
Comment: How many of you have seen these little fast azz girls around the way that will sleep with any and every body? Do you go out of you way to help them? Or put down the people doggin' them out? Probably not. And don't say you haven't seen them. There's at least one ho in every neighborhood! And not all of them are of legal age!

Name: >Just a question
Comment: Just because an underage girl is fast doesn't give a grown man the right to have sex with her. Since he is the adult he should have the sense and the willpower to say no to a little girl. That's the same as saying a woman asked to be raped because of how she is dressed. Only somebody stupid and ignorant like yourself would blame a child for something a grown man should no better than. I guess when someone's relative molests them then the child is at fault because they were being seductive in some way. You are silly and a very sick person!

Comment: Just curious as to what would be "irrefutable proof" for you? If you say the tape isn't proof enough because you haven't seen the tape, not because you have seen it and pronounced it fake, then what would it take to make you believe he did it? The fact that he is not behind bars has nothing to do with his innocence or guilt, but with the slow turning wheels of justice. His lawyers have succeded (as do most) in getting postponements, there are scheduling conflicts etc, that go on in trials so that it is not at all unusual for cases to drag on. And Jackson's actual trial is not about to begin like you say. They havent even had the preliminary discovery hearing to determine whether there is enough evidence to hold the case over for actual trial. So, not only is your reasoning illogical, it is without basis in fact. What I will say is that because this is a country based on rights, you do have a right to remain ignorant and to form your opinions from that place.

Name: Dee Hines
Comment: Why is Bill O'Rielly interested in the NAACP Images Awards? Could it be his apparent dislike of Jesse Jackson for many years? Please go back and research. O'Reilly may have tried to stir up the situation between Rev. Meeks and gay community, as well. Jesse Jackson appointed Rev. Meeks, who is R. Kelly's spiritual advisor. Could this really be about Rev. Jackson and Rev Meeks? Do your research and make your own opinion. Thanks

Like they say "Don't talk about it, be about it."

Comment: People, the name of the award is "IMAGE"... His album is awesome, but HIS IMAGE should not be honored.

Name: >Good Image vs Good Music
Comment: Yes, the people you mentioned had addictions which led to bad images. But the difference in their behavior and R-rah's is that theirs was SELF-DESTRUCTIVE, not destructive to young black girls, and the youngsters who wan t to emulate his treatment of them. Using drugs makes you the victim for the most part which is not the case for the young girl who was peed on. I had been sick of the NAACP, but this is the last straw and it is time for us to stand up and demand that they be accountable to those the claim to speak for, or quit claiming they do.

Name: Isis_moon
Comment: I don't believe he should be nominated because his music and his videos as of late do not prtray positive images. His videos have the same video hoes and his music is about sex. Well except one or two songs. It is the same crap that every other pop artist is pushing. I did not see the video nor do I wish to. I will admit I was curious. However if this girl was underage and if it is him I feel like I am letting the crime continue. No one except the people involve in the case needs to see this video. When I was a child I was curious about alot of things i.e. cigarettes, alcohol, howhot the burner can get on a stove. However I didn't let curiosity get the best of me because I (unlike some on this board) understand right and wrong. Another thing, I don't know anyone who buys an album or listens to an artist based on actions they've done throughout their life. If that was the case there would be many artists who would not sell a penny.

Comment: R Kelly is a talented producer and songwriter but he is a pedophile, flat out. If he is getting help and is true to his heart, that is good for him. I am a victim myself and I have no tolerance for pedophiles. My perpetrator came real close to being put six feet under. It's still hard for me sometimes.I just stay prayful. People that support R Kelly, all I have to say is, let some fool touch your sister, niece or daughter. Let's see how forgiving and supportive you are. R Kelly did wrong and I want him to pay the price. He probably won't have to serve his whole sentence anyway. He needs to go to jail for the crime he committed.

Comment: All I can say to all is WOW this is all very deep! I am R. Kelly's number one fan musically. I have met R. Kelly personally and hung out with him for a few months, and I am a very moral person. I will say this that although I am a fan I do not feel that his image is worthy of such a nomination. I feel that if R. Kelly is guilty of a crime then he deserves the same punishment as anyone else who has the ability to know the difference between right and wrong. As mentioned I did know him personally prior to this coming out and when I met him I can say that he has some issues and needs some help. I was 20 when I met him which was three years ago so I was an adult. Many people state that he was interested in meeting me because I looked young (I am built like a woman but petite) and that he lost interest when he found out my age. I am not certain if it was his choice because although I love his music and thought highly of him, I have plenty of respect for myself to not "give" myself so freely. What we forget is that if he has been dealing with juveniles he had the responsibilty as the adult to not commit that crime. I hope that he is truly innocent, however if he is guilty of a crime let the law handle that. As far as moral judgment of the man we all need to realize that is a judgment that is ultimately left up to the CREATOR! The NAACP should not have nominated him for the image award but as it has been mentioned often, and coming from his Number 1 fan still, his musical production is and continues to be a masterpiece. When I make that statement I am not meaning that all of his content is appropriate for everyone, but as an adult I can choose to understand that content. He is not the first person to be here nor will he be the last. But it is up to us as a people to do what we must to build up one another even if we make mistakes. Once again Only GOD can judge us in the end. Believe me, I am a strong educated professional American woman of African descent and I know that there are times when R. Kelly (as well as many artist can be demeaning to women) and it may seem very contradictory to support him. The bottom line is that it is life and many influential things in our lives that shape and mold us are contradictory at times... THE BIBLE is surely one of those things. Everyone needs to just look into themselves and understand that we only have control over our individual selves so we have to make an effort to make a difference. THIS IS WAY BIGGER THAN R. KELLY. I SAY TO ROB KEEP YOUR HEAD UP AND GOD BLESS YOU AND HELP YOU!

Comment: It is a great honor to be nominated for the NAACP Image Award and I feel that if the persons image this year was flawed by somthing so extreme especially the charges brought up against Mr.Kelly that is truly important that he is held accountable to the fullest extent. Yet we need to realize that this man is also very talented and great at what he does which is music and black people are not going to abandon him in this very trying time because no matter what he has done he still makes all of us dance. That is a very powerful gift to have he is still the pod piper of music period.

Comment: Let's be honest. R. Kelly's Chocolate Factor was a very good album and he is a very talented artist. However, if we are going to be critical of his noimination for an "Image" award, then we should be consistent and criticize the other artists, songs, movies, tv programs etc. that are also not worthy of an "Image" award, because of their background and/or their negative portrayal of Blacks. Despite the name, I do not believe that these awards are about image, particularly in the areas of entertainment. The NAACP should probably change the name or get out of the business of recognizing popular entertainers. By the way everyone who is criticizing the NAACP should realize that the Image Awards are only a small part of what the NAACP does. Also regarding R. Kelly and his legal problems, the man is innocent until proven guilty. Black people of all people should be careful of convicting someone before he/she has had a fair trial. I'm not saying that people should come out and support R. Kelly, but they should at least have an open mind until he has had his day in court. Also, if you saw the tape, you committed a crime.

Everyone wanted to call me and ask me if I viewed the tape and if I thought it was him becuase I was actually acquainted with him. As I have told them, that is not something I want to see if it is true or not. I do not find pleasure in viewing such things and if I did that is only adding to the victimization of that individual. I too have been victimized by an adult male when I was a child, and one that was very close to me, so I know how much pain that breeds. Everyone who viewed the tape should take a deep look at themselves and ask themselves why they needed to see it.... All they did is support the continued victimization of all involved as well as supported bootleggers financially.

Comment: HOWEVER, there's a difference between a mistake, a sin and a crime. Big difference. Funny, but all these blind folks asking, "Where are these girls' parents?" are the same ones that excuse the actions of this sexual predator. It's the same ish, different day with some of you; I've heard this complaint about so-called "fast azz girls" for years, which is only an excuse to exploit a young girls' sexuality. A woman would make your weenie shrink even more b/c she'd demand responsibility, but a young girl, you can exploit b/c hey...what does she know? Are some of you folks so stereotypical, so damned craving to "tap that azz" so you can feel like a man?! It's disgusting. His songs ain't all that...HE ain't all that...and it's high time that all the low-life riff raff of the community be kicked to the curb. The little boys in men's bodies have got to go. No judgement of him/her was intended nor offered. That is something I would never do. Also, you say "fight for something more meaningful","Fight for children's rights". Well, for your information, that is exactly what I happen to do for a living! And that is the main reason why I, like most of my co-workers, am against rewarding R. Kelly. So, given the fact that the two points of your comment were given totally without one shred of information about me, you have typed from a place of ignorance as well.

Comment: This is what makes me sick ... Have you guys heard about Marcus Dixon? He's an 18 year old honor student who is currently serving TEN years in a GA prison for having sex with a CLASSMATE who just happened to be a few weeks shy of 16. And who happens to be white. There is a law in GA which makes sex with a minor a crime. That law was made for perverts like R.Kelly, adults who have sex with children. Not peers having sex with each other. So this kid who had a promising future is now locked up, but these pedophiles are out there.... Anothe example: Actor Scott Bairstow (Party of Five) was sentenced to four months in jail for having sex with his wife's relative who was 12 at the time. !!!! Four months??? And if he acts nicely, he can be out in 37 days...WTF???? The injustice of our so called justice system You can take a look at Marcus Dixon's case at www.Helpmarcus.com ... Here's a case of blatant racism, and we all need to support this kid! Not a pervert like R.Kelly by buying his cd's, going to his concerts and putting money in his pockets so he can pay his lawyer bills!!!

I have a daughter who is 15 years old. He sickens and disgusts me like no other. We're the first people to let each other down. As far as I'm concerned R. Kelly's image is garbage! The sickness goes all the way back to 12 Play. Pay attention to the lyrics. He's told you what he's about all along.

Comment: You are absolutely right! R. Kelly is not "Image Award" material. Unless of course they've changed the criteria (without letting us know). This man's "image" is anything but admirable. He"s no one that our children (or anyone else for that matter) should be trying to emulate. Mr. Mfume's defense of R. Kelly's nomination is ridiculous. In this case NAACP must stand for Nothing At All Concerning Positivity.

Name: No more award shows
Comment: PERIOD. Numbers are manipulated to bring some to No. 1. Marketing and pr machines have taken over and there is nothing pure and true today, especially in entertainment. People live in glass houses and are throwing stones; and lastly, there is no man without sin, so cancel the awards. Judge not, cuz you don't have all the information to proclaim someone worthy. Our vision as to who is worthy of accolades is getting cloudy and mirky. No more award shows. PERIOD. If you believe in yourself and what you are doing, does it really matter what someone else thinks? Do you really care that someone thinks you are worthy, or do you know that for yourself. And can you really accept an award for something, knowing that you have hidden demons and agendas? So, just who is in position to judge? No more award shows period. It seems we are running out of worthy people to give awards to.

Comment: I'm a R. Kelly fan. I believe that we have to be accountable for our actions, no matter what age and if you don't know, you betta ask somebody. Not only was R. Kelly out of line, but this girl was waaay out of line, if she thought at 14 she should be having sex with ANYONE whether or not she is videotaped. Having sex is a big responsibility and children are wired to handle what happens after sex: stds, pregnancies, abortions, etc. R. Kelly did not kidnap this girl from Sesame Street. As the adult, R should have know better. As the child, this little girl knew what she was doing was wrong and if she was being hurt, she would have told somebody. Was he videotaped holding a gun to her head? If what he did was a crime, then he has to do the time and little girls should have better parenting and make better choices. When they don't they get everybody in trouble. None of us are above the law. Having said all that, it is my opinion that R. Kelly should not be up for an image award because his image is so tarnished by these charges. As an innocent man not in need of any more accolades, for he has already been blessed far beyond imagination, he should bow out. He should be thankful, but decline to be nominated. This does not show guilt. This would show class. The NAACP awards are about "image" and not artistry this time. R.Kelly should bow out and decline to accept the nomination UNTIL he is found innocent of all charges against him.

The NAACP has fought for African-American rights for almost a century. When other organizations didn't answer the clarion call for freedom and justice, the NAACP was always there. It's easy to condemn the NAACP but how many of you who condemn have joined or supported ANY project by NAACP. I'm not a fan of Mfume but I know that we would not have made the gains that we've made today, were it not for NAACP. Comment: well, this is unfortunately one of those topics that keep us as black folx in a state of disarray, disagreement and ultimately, often feeling disdain toward one another when we differ in viewpoints. It is sad for us, though, quite convenient for those whose plan it is to keep us fighting among one another until we self destruct, one way or the other. R. Kelly frightens me. Period. I'm a straight-forward thinking, well educated, Black woman, with the regular hang ups of relationship commitment and fears of frothing dogs, but I see clearly when it counts. And when the smoke clears, R. Kelly is a frightening man. He is abusing our babies. And our beautiful, brilliant babies get the message that it is ok for someone to do so. Why bother to protest segregated schools, or fight to have our babies receive a fair and equitable education as all others, when we are allowing others NOT IN THEIR CORNER - R. KELLY - to humiliate them and pile more shame on their plate? The support of this artist's actions has no doubt led to the suppression of hundreds of our babies' voices who are finding themselves sexually entered, probed, used, and touched without their consent. It's a frightening and sad thing to live in a society that continues to regard the beautiful Black woman as the 'whore' who always wants it - regardless of age, and we as a community show our support for this nonsense by nominating a person who has hurt and shamed our children with an image award, with no remorse. Let me be clear. If any of my babies, at whatever age! comes homes with a R.Kelly-like video, whining, "why are they sweating me??..he and I are going to talk - and he may have to do it from his OWN apartment! The numbers of beautiful Black babies who are abused by uncles, aunts, etc. right under our noses is staggering. (yes, I know, WHITE FAMILIES DO IT TOOOOOOOOO!), but there's not enuf room on my plate for that - We need to respond in ways that let people know that it is not acceptable to hurt our babies. Our ancestors did what they knew they had to do and we need to continue on. Let's get back to the village mentality. When one child is hurt, our whole community is affected. This is a child we are talking about. A baby. A beautiful Black Child of God. R. Kelly you frighten me. Along with all others who are intent on stopping my babies from reaching their dreams, I need to watch out for you, as well. As far as the NAACP goes, if there is any question as to there being damage to our babies, I urge you to rethink how your decision might affect our babies' lives. Their bodies and their minds are worth so much more.

Comment: R,Kelly, is not worthy for an Image Award. His name should be withdrawn. The NAACP, need awakeup call. The event should be protested. Mr.Kelly, is has talented, as a singer, but not as a role mode.

Name: What's up with the NAACP?
Comment: To clarify, one cannot dispute the contribution of the NAACP to black folk. The question was directed to their choice for image awards. The work the organization stands on its own merit; however, the choices for image awards in the past have been disturbing. If there are not a lot of black folk to give awards to, then maybe they should find another way of awarding worthy people. Like asking them to serve and further the work of the organization. As John Kennedy said: ask not what your [naacp] can do for you, but ask what YOU can do for the [NAACP].

Comment: At this point they need to just stop even having the image awards. With the RKelly nomination this year, the multi nominations for Barbershop last year despite the controversy, the nomination for the film and tv shows. The Parkers??? Bad Boys??? It's all Hollywood and about celebrity attendance. And what's with those independent films? Whale Rider and Bend it Like Beckham? There wasn't a black person in them. How do they contribute to African American art? And after doing a Jesse Jackson like march into the network presidents offices demanding to be heard about black representation on the networks, how can Mfume say I don't have anything to do with the nominations? He certainly doesn't miss the camera opporutnity to hand them out. They need to just stop now. They are completely lacking in credibility.

Comment: Please let me clarify my point. I defended the NAACP for its many years of service and sacrifice to the African-American community. It's been a beacon of light when there was none on a raging, violent sea. As for as this nomination process and R. Kelly, I am old skool and honestly admit I know little about the man. I do know about the videos with a young child. I see this entire nomination process being a personal project of Kwesi Mfume. Unfortunately, Mfume is not made of the same material/integrity as the former NAACP presidents over the years. I wish to separate his image award program from the honest, hard work, filled with integrity and commitment that the NAACP has been engaged for almost a century. I am a life time member of NAACP but that doesn't mean that I'm happy with the direction that this superb organizatin has taken under the direction of Mfume. There's an old saying, "The man/woman who stands for nothing, will fall for anything". Last time I checked, Mfume was climbing to his feet, dusting off his clothes from his nap in Baltimore's gutter. Can't make it no plainer than that!

Comment: I agree with most. He should not receive the award. Listening to his music is one thing but letting our children, society and ourselves feel that despite all he should receive an award that acknowledges what we view "an image we respect"....i can't image why he'd even be considered.

Comment: Very good article. It will be interesting to see how this one turns out. Last I heard was a person was innocent until proven guilty, regardless of the proof against them. Here is a thought... What about the teenager's parents? Why are they not being charged as well?

Comment: African americans come in all different kinds, obviously we have some educated ones on this board who have some respect for themselves and their families, and then the ones that most of the time the educated ones rather have nothing to do with because they embarrass us soo bad with stupid crap of blaming the victim girl child and even saying because someone is talented they should be overlooked if they murder someone spiritually like this pervert is doing to these children. NAACP sucks in my book and I agree with the poster who has been with them for a number of years, it must eat you up to see what these so called leaders are doing to all your hard work.

YOUR EVIDENCE SHOULD BE PRESENTED IN COURT TO SUPPORT THE PROSECUTORS CASE 2. YOU HAVE VIEWED THE RECORDED EVIDENCE IN WHICH YOU ARE NOW GUILTY OF BEING IN POSSESSION OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY (TURN YOURSELF IN PLEASE)3.YOU HAVE ALLOWED THE MEDIA TO THINK FOR YOU. THERE ARE OTHER CAUSES YOU COULD REALLY HELP WITH PLS READ THE STORY REGARDING Marcus Dixon AT > http://www.act4justice.com/

Name: K Duponte...or is that duped?
Comment: Don't you DARE compare Marcus Dixon, a young brother who is really a victim of a racist prosecutor to R. Smelly, who has committed the Black on Black crime of sexually exploiting our young Black sisters. R. Smelly is scum and if he had any honor, would turn himself in, beg the mercy of the court and get therapy. Speaking of which--what happened to the so-called spiritual therapy he was getting? I guess he was helping OJ find the real killer during his therapy hour.

Comment: R. Kelly, has made mistakes and we all do. Let's pray that he has learned from his mistakes and move on. Let's pray and give him guidance from this point forward. Love to all!

Name: Unfortunately
Comment: Lula, that will never happen. I am truly convinced that even after he serves his time (which he will), some people will not be satified. As for as the person asking about his spiritual guidance, just because you don't see it does not mean it doesn't exist. Even you don't live with him, you don't know what he is doing and who is counseling him. Can you give the brother a chance to figure out what he needs to do to move forward. Just because he is still in the spotlight doesn't mean that his soul is not tortured. Believe me, I put on a front on the daily and people just don't know what I am going through.

Comment: Such a difficult subject to dissect. One can ask if we judge his musical ability with the "pitfalls" of his behavior? Throughout history society has placed people on pedistals who have strattled the ethical guidelines of the values we were taught to embrace. Whether one judges R. Kelly based on ones own personal values doesn't declare him guilty. Would we prefer to give the award to someone who appears to live a different lifestyle? What if it turned out that that same person lived the same lifestyle as R. Kelly but kept it private? Would that satisfy all of the critics? It's hard to be critical in an imperfect world. Everyone has done something in life that someone else would not approve of. If we instead spent the energy trying to embrace the children of our brothers, sisters and neighbors to create a communal environment where we love and taught one another, there would be less concern for these things in the first place. We should try to spend our producitve energies working on enhancing the quality of life to prevent behaviors like these through love instead of through judging. It must be the God in us that wants to be the judge.

Comment: Ok, the CD was great, but being nominated for an image award is taking it too far. I'm glad someone is standing up agianst this because its seemed as if everyone was ignoring what actually happened. If we let him get away with this it sends a message to little girls that what happened was ok and it's not. What bothers me the most is that he has daughters himself but doesn't realize how this could be them in the near future.

Comment: I am one who did see the video and still have my doubts if it is him. However, my question to all of you on the board is.... why are you not speaking out against the parents of these young girls? No one on this board have said ANYTHING about the parents who knew about their daughter's relationship with this man. The parents who for years have taken money from this man. Yes, I am upset with him..however I am MOST upset with the parents who needed money so bad that they would sell their daughters to him!! I feel if he is found guilty; the DA should also charge the parents. This all came to light because of one he refused to pay one parent. Remember the little girl in the tape is "allegedly" the niece of his former artist Sparkel.

Comment: I'm sorry, but making good music isn't an excuse, you have to first make good music. R. Kelly's music is straight-up trash these days with the exception of a few songs. Obviously the bassline from "Thoia Thoing" (wtf?) has some of you hypnotized into believing his brand of music is even relevant these days. He makes music for the younger set because our youth will be quicker to defend and suppert him. They don't know any better because we aren't teaching them any better. His sound dominates the radio because we blacks are so desperate for heroes these days that we'll forgive him anything. I cannot stand his %*$. I hope he rots in jail and burns in Hayle.

Comment: When is the peeing video going to show up at Blockbuster Video. Isn't peeing on girls called "Golden Showers" Is this type of sex really popular in the black community right now or is this just a small group of people whoe are into this like a fetish. Man he messed up when pee peed on that girl. As a brother that's just not cool. Maybe I'm just old fashion. I just young girls whizzin is the latest trend, I hope not.

Comment: There's much more to this case than R. Kelly alone. There's Michael Kackson and there's a connection to Quincy Jones' Music Label. As well as some of Michael Jackson's comments on some Music Industry big time managers that he said were racists. There's as well the connection to history. It were white supremacists racist pseudo religious fashist who went to Africa, took people from there homeland, robbed them off their liberty, freedoms and will. And at the en they even took their victims dignity not only by raping the women or forcing them to slavelabour. The White supremacists did as well force their victims to have unwanted sex with eachother, thereby creating a sort of "slave-breeding" programm. Something similar did the Nazi's with a programm that forced 'Arian' looking jung woman and also as well even girls to have unwanted sex with Nazi officers. And it is no miracle to me that there as well is a connection between the old time Nazi criminals and those who profitted from their hereinous crimes and invested in the national industries which helped build their Nazi imperials (wether in Japan, Germany or elswhere). Strangely it is exactly the former Nazi imperialist countries that benefited the most from the secon world war. Plus the USA. And it is only in these countries that Child raping artists still get rewards, even if convicted. Or in R. Kelly's case freed for some legal perversion on the legality of cristal clear evidence. To me as someone who has tried to fight sexual child abuse and child-abuse-pornography, it makes absolutely sence that R. Kelly got away with his case. There's just to much support from old time Nazi's, their sollaborators and nowadays their idealogical decendants.
