Comment: I don't know about anyone else but I think it's deplorable that he'd be nominated for an IMAGE award of all things. The man calls himself the pied piper. Also, for Mfume to say his music is nominated and not the man is ridiculous. His lyrics haven't been uplifting since "I believe I can fly" I know I'll get slammed on this board but I'm sorry I cannot believe people still support him.

Comment: EUR, the tone of this article makes you guys sound as though you're offended that someone is speaking out. I'm glad these organizations that want to shout from the (proverbial) rooftops that they represent Black people, are speaking out against R. Kelly. Even though he hasn't been found guilty by a jury...the mere "smell" of impropriaty should be enough to keep him away from the nomination process. It's amazing how members of the NAACP can justify an award nomination for a man accused of child molestation (a few times); as a mater of fact, I was appalled that Jesse Jackson, Sr. gave R. Kelly an award less than 2 weeks ago for excellence. These "so called" leaders either need to stand-up to the wrongs within the Black community (all of the wrongs, not just the ones committed by White America), or stop shouting that they represent the Black voice.

Comment: I agree with you Mecca. I had a disagreement 2 weeks ago with a couple of folks who say, they buy his music, but don't support him as a person. I told them, that's IDIOTIC!!! Everytime someone buys one of his records, they're ultimately putting money into his pocket, which supports him anyway. The radio station here is just as repulsive; WGCI-FM (supposed to be the #1 urban station in the country) plays R. Kelly's music as though he owns shares in the company. Somebody at 'GCI must be taking payoff's to play as much of his music as they do. This guy has been charged several times with child molestation, and even though he paid the accusers off, the threat is still there....yet 'GCi let's him host concerts for kids, they use him at festivals, at rallies, and they play every new song he releases. The "Black Leaders" need to boycott that station!

It just goes to show you how sick people are because if they can still support someone who urinates on a child then they are truly sick. And yes I saw the video. I am not guilty of anything. If I was looking at the tape to get some jollies I would be guilty. I was looking at the tape to judge if it was him, if it was an underage girl, if he performed lewd and lascivious acts, and the answer is YES!! Anyone who saw the tape and believes he is innocent must believe that someone had $40 Million dollars laying around to pay to Industrial Light and Magic to fake the film. How can you say the tape is not proof. Tape has been used in countless cases to convict criminals when it is clear that they are participating in a crime. And when you see R. Kelly 3 feet from the camera lens as he adjusts the focus, he's pretty much the guy in the film (no edits, no cuts, just one long camera shot where he never leaves the frame)

And to add Roman Polanski, filmmaker who directed "The Pianist" won the Academy Award and he is a fugitive from justice for raping a 13 year old girl. He lives in Europe and if he comes into the United States will be arrested immediately...White people looked over his transgressions and awarded him despite that he has had a warrant for his arrest for 30 years. Comment: What bothers me most about our people is that we make excuses and support bad behavior in our own communities. The right to listen to his music and "groove " to it is your perogative, but the issue we are discussing is a nomination for an NAACP IMAGE award. NOt a billboard music award or a Grammy!!! If in fact you are honiring him for the body of work he has produced then the IMAGE awards is not the place for that. These so called leaders of the black community need to stop picking and choosing what battles they decide to fight. Whether he is guilty or not, the man as been charged not on just one but 21 counts. SO is it ok for us to be outraged when white people commit crimes against us and our communities , but it is ok when our black people do it to each other? When will we learn to fight as vehemently against wrong doings in our own communites as much as we fight against white folks? Not every song sung by an artist will be uplifting; not every scene portrayed by an actor wear a halo--if you're a real artist, describing or telling about the human condition or foibles, then that's allowed. I agree with the majority of the comments here. I haven't seen the tape, but for the charges to be brought against him, 21 of them at that, says that there has to be something to substaniate this. Why is there a question about whether he should receive an award? It is an IMAGE award and his image has been tarnished by his own doing. This should not be the image that we want portrayed to our kids. That is saying we condone his actions...he is nominated if his music is nominated.

This is truly sad and for you all defending him please take a deep look into yourselves. Think about it, even if R. Please ask yourself, why would R.Kelly who is allegedly guilty of child molestation charges advertising that he is the "Pied Piper" I do not think Kobe and R. Kelly should be in the same sentence. Kobe is apologetic,remorseful for his actions, it is yet to be seen what the outcome will be. R.Kelly denies that he even did anything. I know for a fact he has issues because of the payoff he made to a close friend of mine...who started dating him when she was 15 and he was 24. Good Music vs. Good Image
Comment: In my opinion, the NAACP was\is in a quandry over the R. Kelly nomination because on one hand, he makes good music (I personally looove that "Step" song he does, and I know alot of ya'll do too! Don't front :)). But on the other hand, his IMAGE is tainted by that tape that got out and the case he caught because of it. That's a tough decision to make for an awards show that wants to honor black ("colored"?) achievments in the arts. It almost seems like a no-brainer for all 'moralists', but a closer look at almost ALL of our legends would put you moralists in the same quandry. Just think, you might have to had to disqualify Marvin Gaye, Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Eddie Kendricks (The Temptations), Chaka Khan, and a whole slew of our other 'favorites' because of their private lives (Drug use, and everything else we do and don't know about them). So who and what does and would that leave us with?

I can honestly say I do not listen to any of his music; I do not go out to clubs, I change the radio station when one his songs start to play. I refuse to support those whose music, or acting roles are not positive, have a CLEAN record and not video tape floating on the internet.
To you R. supporters, the words are IMAGE AWARDS, not Source Awards, not the Grammy Awards--his music does not promote a positive image, his personal life does not promote a positive image. Comment: This is trully a sad day. It is amazing how quickly we forget. First let me say, that I totally disagree with the "nomination" of Kelly. I don't have any of his albums, and I certainly believe he is sick and disrespectful of women. Period. However, let me give you some insight on the process. Ballots are mailed out to individuals from all sectors of the commuity, the community at large submits these ballots and the nominations are drawn from these. The community nominated Kelly, not Mfume et al. There is a committee that oversees this process. The committee can ask for an executive decision against this, but that is equal to censorship, thus not allowing the community to express their will. If they do it for Kelly, they may have to do it every time people do not agree with a nominee. With that said. Why is it that "some" are quick to condem the NAACP, forget all the work that it has done and is doing, (an example: just this week the President of this United States bypassed the constitutional process for nominating a Supreme Court Judge, which is a life long appointment, by the way and placed Charles Pickering on the court, Pickering is a staunch racist and will be making decisions that will affect Black folks for the rest of his life. The NAACP along with many other civil and human rights organizations opposed Pickering. This is just one example, there are on-going efforts to repeal Rockefeller Drug Laws, Voter Registration and Education initiatives, health, housing and other key programs going on at this very moment. However I am going to dare say that most of the people here bashing are not even aware of these programs and worse yet are not doing much in your own communities to make life better for yourself and your neighbors. If you have taken the time to "investigate" the Kelly tape, why not take time to investigate whether or not the teachers in your childrens schools are certified, whether or not your police are profiling you, etc. etc. etc. Are all of you out there on the front lines for your communities... fighting the fine fight. Someone posted the Washington Bureau and the address for the NAACP Image Awards office. While you are submitting your complaints, why not give a few suggestions while your at it. The NAACP is not the be all to end all, but folks sure know how to find them when someone has violated their rights. "Don't talk about it... be about it!

And Jackson's actual trial is not about to begin like you say. Kelly personally and hung out with him for a few months, and I am a very moral person. I will say this that although I am a fan I do not feel that his image is worthy of such a nomination. I feel that if R. Kelly is guilty of a crime then he deserves the same punishment as anyone else who has the ability to know the difference between right and wrong. As mentioned I did know him personally prior to this coming out and when I met him I can say that he has some issues and needs some help. Many people state that he was interested in meeting me because I looked young (I am built like a woman but petite) and that he lost interest when he found out my age. I am not certain if it was his choice because although I love his music and thought highly of him, I have plenty of respect for myself to not "give" myself so freely. What we forget is that if he has been dealing with juveniles he had the responsibilty as the adult to not commit that crime. I hope that he is truly innocent, however if he is guilty of a crime let the law handle that. As far as moral judgment of the man we all need to realize that is a judgment that is ultimately left up to the CREATOR! The NAACP should not have nominated him for the image award but as it has been mentioned often, and coming from his Number 1 fan still, his musical production is and continues to be a masterpiece. When I make that statement I am not meaning that all of his content is appropriate for everyone, but as an adult I can choose to understand that content. He is not the first person to be here nor will he be the last. But it is up to us as a people to do what we must to build up one another even if we make mistakes. However, if we are going to be critical of his noimination for an "Image" award, then we should be consistent and criticize the other artists, songs, movies, tv programs etc. that are also not worthy of an "Image" award, because of their background and/or their negative portrayal of Blacks. Comment: PERIOD. Numbers are manipulated to bring some to No. 1. Marketing and pr machines have taken over and there is nothing pure and true today, especially in entertainment. People live in glass houses and are throwing stones; and lastly, there is no man without sin, so cancel the awards. Judge not, cuz you don't have all the information to proclaim someone worthy. Our vision as to who is worthy of accolades is getting cloudy and mirky. No more award shows. PERIOD. And can you really accept an award for something, knowing that you have hidden demons and agendas? So, just who is in position to judge? No more award shows period. Comment: I'm a R. Kelly fan. I believe that we have to be accountable for our actions, no matter what age and if you don't know, you betta ask somebody. Not only was R. Kelly out of line, but this girl was waaay out of line, if she thought at 14 she should be having sex with ANYONE whether or not she is videotaped. Having sex is a big responsibility and children are wired to handle what happens after sex: stds, pregnancies, abortions, etc. R. Kelly did not kidnap this girl from Sesame Street. As the adult, R should have know better. As the child, this little girl knew what she was doing was wrong and if she was being hurt, she would have told somebody. Was he videotaped holding a gun to her head? If what he did was a crime, then he has to do the time and little girls should have better parenting and make better choices. When they don't they get everybody in trouble. None of us are above the law. Having said all that, it is my opinion that R. Kelly should not be up for an image award because his image is so tarnished by these charges. As an innocent man not in need of any more accolades, for he has already been blessed far beyond imagination, he should bow out. He should be thankful, but decline to be nominated. This does not show guilt. This would show class. The NAACP awards are about "image" and not artistry this time. R.Kelly should bow out and decline to accept the nomination UNTIL he is found innocent of all charges against him.

Comment: Of all the comments that I've seen on this topic, the Lifetime NAACP member makes the MOST sense. Go back and read it and expand your minds. The NAACP has fought for African-American rights for almost a century. When other organizations didn't answer the clarion call for freedom and justice, the NAACP was always there. It's easy to condemn the NAACP but how many of you who condemn have joined or supported ANY project by NAACP. I'm not a fan of Mfume but I know that we would not have made the gains that we've made today, were it not for NAACP. I remember as a child in '50's, when a Black face would appear on TV, my excited Grandmother would scream for the top of her lungs, "COLORED!!" Yes, we have a long way to go, but have come a long way, thanks to NAACP.

Comment: well, this is unfortunately one of those topics that keep us as black folx in a state of disarray, disagreement and ultimately, often feeling disdain toward one another when we differ in viewpoints. It is sad for us, though, quite convenient for those whose plan it is to keep us fighting among one another until we self destruct, one way or the other.
R. Kelly frightens me. Period. I'm a straight-forward thinking, well educated, Black woman, with the regular hang ups of relationship commitment and fears of frothing dogs, but I see clearly when it counts. And when the smoke clears, R. Kelly is a frightening man. He is abusing our babies. And our beautiful, brilliant babies get the message that it is ok for someone to do so. Why bother to protest segregated schools, or fight to have our babies receive a fair and equitable education as all others, when we are allowing others NOT IN THEIR CORNER - R. KELLY - to humiliate them and pile more shame on their plate? The support of this artist's actions has no doubt led to the suppression of hundreds of our babies' voices who are finding themselves sexually entered, probed, used, and touched without their consent. It's a frightening and sad thing to live in a society that continues to regard the beautiful Black woman as the 'whore' who always wants it - regardless of age, and we as a community show our support for this nonsense by nominating a person who has hurt and shamed our children with an image award, with no remorse.
Let me be clear. If any of my babies, at whatever age! comes homes with a R.Kelly-like video, whining, "why are they sweating me??..he and I are going to talk - and he may have to do it from his OWN apartment! The numbers of beautiful Black babies who are abused by uncles, aunts, etc. right under our noses is staggering. (yes, I know, WHITE FAMILIES DO IT TOOOOOOOOO!), but there's not enuf room on my plate for that - We need to respond in ways that let people know that it is not acceptable to hurt our babies. Our ancestors did what they knew they had to do and we need to continue on. Let's get back to the village mentality. When one child is hurt, our whole community is affected. This is a child we are talking about. A baby. A beautiful Black Child of God. R. Kelly you frighten me. Along with all others who are intent on stopping my babies from reaching their dreams, I need to watch out for you, as well. As far as the NAACP goes, if there is any question as to there being damage to our babies, I urge you to rethink how your decision might affect our babies' lives.
Their bodies and their minds are worth so much more.

The work the organization stands on its own merit; however, the choices for image awards in the past have been disturbing. If there are not a lot of black folk to give awards to, then maybe they should find another way of awarding worthy people. Like asking them to serve and further the work of the organization. With the RKelly nomination this year, the multi nominations for Barbershop last year despite the controversy, the nomination for the film and tv shows. The Parkers??? Bad Boys??? It's all Hollywood and about celebrity attendance. And what's with those independent films? Whale Rider and Bend it Like Beckham? There wasn't a black person in them. How do they contribute to African American art? And after doing a Jesse Jackson like march into the network presidents offices demanding to be heard about black representation on the networks, how can Mfume say I don't have anything to do with the nominations? Comment: Please let me clarify my point. I defended the NAACP for its many years of service and sacrifice to the African-American community. It's been a beacon of light when there was none on a raging, violent sea. As for as this nomination process and R. Kelly, I am old skool and honestly admit I know little about the man. I do know about the videos with a young child. I see this entire nomination process being a personal project of Kwesi Mfume. Unfortunately, Mfume is not made of the same material/integrity as the former NAACP presidents over the years. I wish to separate his image award program from the honest, hard work, filled with integrity and commitment that the NAACP has been engaged for almost a century. I am a life time member of NAACP but that doesn't mean that I'm happy with the direction that this superb organizatin has taken under the direction of Mfume. There's an old saying, "The man/woman who stands for nothing, will fall for anything". Last time I checked, Mfume was climbing to his feet, dusting off his clothes from his nap in Baltimore's gutter. Can't make it no plainer than that!

Comment: Such a difficult subject to dissect. One can ask if we judge his musical ability with the "pitfalls" of his behavior? Throughout history society has placed people on pedistals who have strattled the ethical guidelines of the values we were taught to embrace. Whether one judges R. Kelly based on ones own personal values doesn't declare him guilty. Would we prefer to give the award to someone who appears to live a different lifestyle? What if it turned out that that same person lived the same lifestyle as R. Kelly but kept it private? Would that satisfy all of the critics? It's hard to be critical in an imperfect world. Everyone has done something in life that someone else would not approve of. If we instead spent the energy trying to embrace the children of our brothers, sisters and neighbors to create a communal environment where we love and taught one another, there would be less concern for these things in the first place. We should try to spend our producitve energies working on enhancing the quality of life to prevent behaviors like these through love instead of through judging. It must be the God in us that wants to be the judge.

Comment: There's much more to this case than R. Kelly alone. There's Michael Kackson and there's a connection to Quincy Jones' Music Label. As well as some of Michael Jackson's comments on some Music Industry big time managers that he said were racists.
There's as well the connection to history. It were white supremacists racist pseudo religious fashist who went to Africa, took people from there homeland, robbed them off their liberty, freedoms and will. And at the en they even took their victims dignity not only by raping the women or forcing them to slavelabour. Strangely it is exactly the former Nazi imperialist countries that benefited the most from the secon world war. Plus the USA. And it is only in these countries that Child raping artists still get rewards, even if convicted. Or in R. Kelly's case freed for some legal perversion on the legality of cristal clear evidence. To me as someone who has tried to fight sexual child abuse and child-abuse-pornography, it makes absolutely sence that R. Kelly got away with his case. There's just to much support from old time Nazi's, their sollaborators and nowadays their idealogical decendants.
