Comment: I'll have to get this book for my son also..

Name: mocha
Comment: I will buy a copy for my son. A copy for my brother who did graduate from college and has two kids by two women already. One for my younger brother who is 19 and in and out oof jr. college. And for my brother who wouldn't listen because he said I didn't understand when I told him nothing has changed on the streets since I was younger. Now he sits waiting to be sentenced to a federal pen for selling drugs. He will have much time to read. 100 BLACK MEN OF AMERICA should write a fat check and give these books away if the content is as good as it should be.

Name: beboyz
Comment: I didn't know he graduated from Harvard Law school. He is doing his thing on CSI-New York. I have even more respect for him now.

Name: DCGG
Comment: Hill's heart is in the right place unfortunately the targetted audience does not read - even if given the book free how many will actually read it. Today's youth are consumed with television, music and video games...I've even seen infants singing along to 50 cents or doing the laffy taffy dance...but can't say the alphabet all the while the mother's looking on proud and encouraging her boo-boo to "do it stuff"....

Name: Thunny
Comment: Shouldn't the book company's PR people be sending out press releases instead of the author shamelessly promoting this book whuile masking it as an attempt to better our youth? It's not like this book's proceeds are going toward funding black youth literacy programs or anything. Dude just wants to get paid and he's appealing to an especially vulnerable demographic by pretending to care when of course, as with everything else, it is about the bottom line -- the book company wants to sell books and Harper wants to sell books and cash in. I overstand what is going on here.

Name: SpelmanRho
Comment: >DCGG: But you can't stop trying. the person that I am now (and will become) is the result of people of the persistence of people who care about me.

Name: Gurlfrand
Comment: LOL @ Spelman! Me too!! I'll pick this up for my 14 year old nephew for his birthday next month.

Name: Gurlfrand
Comment: You're right - you can't stop trying - EVER! Thunny you are correct - this generation - many of them don't read books or go to the library, but, you have to be the one to "sow the seed" in their lives - eventually, something will sprout and start to grow, but you still have to be the farmer to get out their and plant, otherwise, they are doomed. I love my 14 year old nephew, he's very bright. I'm always sending him books, so, he will read, and have ideas to do his book reports, etc, etc. I have to be the one with the brains and help him, otherwise, the 50 cents and others of the dark world will overtake him, and I just don't want that to happen.

Comment: Co-sign with SpelmanRho and Gurlfrand. Already loved him but then saw him on G. Garvin cooking..I am a fan for life now.

Comment: EUR I guess you are listening. A few days ago when folks were talking about more R-Kelly crap I said "Tell me about some real positive black folks like Hills Harper.". I am proud to see this young black, educated brother taking a stand. I doubt we will see his name on a pair of jeans, a bottle of cologne or a sports drink. I am Proud of you Hills. I will be buy your book.

Name: Victornator
Comment: Damn, It sounds like black people have thrown in the towel regarding today's black youth. Do you want to get rid of them and start from scratch.

Name: GQ_Boo
Comment: DCGG you got me over here in my office on the floor laughing talkin about some doing the laffy taffy dance and can't say the alphabet ..... so sad but so deg on true boo boo's

Name: oldschoolbrother
Comment: Most youth do not read because in school the emphasis is not there, also, many kids are latch key kids. It just comes down to parenting. Take your kids to the library on Saturday, spend time with them. Too many parents got myspace account, on yahoo trying to get their freak on, etc. That is why publishers make statements like that.

Name: Gurlfrand
Comment: lol @ OSB - true, true. It has 95% to due with parenting, and 5% with sending them to school. If most kids got help from their momma and pappas with their school and work and things that concern their lives and future, especially black kids, they would be equipped to go out in the world and compete with their counterparts, but like you said, OSB, their parents are somewhere else doing their own thing, and the kids are on their own doing lord knows what.

Name: DOne
Comment: "The proceeds from the book go toward my MANifest Your Destiny Foundation, set-up to award scholarships to young men and women who want to further their education but cannot afford to.”

Name: oldschoolbrother
Comment: If most parents would cut out the cable or satellite tv, keep internet access for homework, take away the cell phone after school you would see a definite improvement.

Name: OSUN
Comment: OSB dont forget to get rid of that playstation or XBOX.

Name: Stephanie
Comment: I just want to know if he needs a wife! He is a real cutie. He's educated and talented...ummmm I'd stalk him!!! LOL

Name: ericsgirl
Comment: Stephanie I am there with ya. I am surprised he isn't taken already. Last I heard he was seeing Essence Atkins and at one time Rae Dawn Chong.

Name: SpelmanRho
Comment: >ericsgirl & Stephanie: there was a rumor that he was engaged to Rae Dawn Chong but that's false. We still have a chance girls. LOL !

Comment: I work with at-risk youth at the Boys & Girls Club of San Bernardino so I understand the frustration but being a practical man I mainly work with the young brothas that want to do something. The rest of them, well the penal system will deal with them in due time. You can't save everybody and it'll be a waste of time to even try.

Name: beboyz
Comment: Train How long have you been working there. Its sounds like you have become jaded. Even if you cant save em all you do your best and try not to be so negative.

Name: Train
Comment: I'm not jaded but since I reached my 30's back in the mid 90's I've become of the mind set that not everybody wants to be saved so I concentrate on the ones that want "it" bad enough. There are those that just want to slang and bang so I use my law enforcement experience to school them about how the system really is and they make the choice from there. Life is about choices and each of us has to live with the choices that we make, be it good or bad.

Name: Gemami
Comment: As most have said, we have to keep hope alive (don't want to sound like Jesse Jackson). We can't give up on our youth, especially young boys. We have to show and be that example -- and one way is providing books that would interest them -- maybe even this book. I believe alot of kids idolize the street life because they see their own parent(s) struggling while a drug dealers is makes money by just "chilling". They don't see the bigger picture, just the money, cars, jewels and girls. Prison and death have no value because it glamorize. Although these kids may seem lost, I still believe they can be reached if we as adults deal with them on their level.

Name: Stuckinthe70s
Comment: Being a latch key kid has nothing to do with anything. Its simply parenting. All of my children were latch key..Here's my stats: Oldest-graduating from 4yr Culinary School this May06 Middle child - Freshma, majoring in Advertising Youngest- Still in HS but plans to major in Music and minor in Journalism (or anything to do with writing). Again, it comes down to parenting, PERIOD!

Name: Stuckinthe70s
Comment: And I'll buy Hill's book, simply to buy his book! Proud of you, Bro!
