Comment: We've known for years that many of these labels were started with drug money. I remember back in the late 80s my older sister tried to discourage me from listening to rap music by telling me that it's drug dealer's music and that's why so many young Black men listen to it.

Name: McNasty
Comment: No %*$!!

Name: McNasty
Comment: Okay that was No shyt! They think all of them are criminals involved in the criminal underworld of drugs sex guns and death so why not waste taxpayer dollars to trail these hoodrats around.

Name: Monicia
Comment: ^^^^^^^55555555555 Mcnasty! The money is better spent investing back into the comminities where these folks come from. Probly got EUR on the watch list now........... Wouldn't surprise me.

Name: khufu
Comment: while I dont condone the negative element of rap music and hip hop culture let me say this: the reasons they watch them is political and economic. All the money made through rap poses a problem for the powers that be as well as the potential power of influece rappers have over the masses...imagine if by some miracle all rappers suddenly gained some sense of Black, righteous sanity and said what Gil SCott used to say and they had the money to bacl progressive politics...nah, the man watches them to make sure they stay caught up in negativity and should any of them suddenlt UNITE FOR REAL watch and see what skeletons would come out the closets...suddenly they'd be jailed and their %*$ets (azzez) seized...

Name: realuvbaby
Comment: Surprise?!!! Surprise?!! Intelligence & Counterintelligence. Some organizations crews, posses, etc., may have even been infiltrated! Who knows? Does anyone really think nobody is watching?

Name: Raypeazy
Comment: I wonder if they got files on Hammer and Young MC?

Name: mcoreo
Comment: This is not unbelievable. The rap stars have alot of exposure and that means they do not need to be "found" so the police can just keep tabs. You would think that once you get up there and have that exposure that people would not get themselves in stupid situations. But look at the news and you see they do. It is like, what is the saying? Shooting ducks in a barrel?

Name: beboyz
Comment: They are wasting taxpayers dollars spying on rappers while the heavy metal rockers are pretty much doing the same stuff unfettered. Its like store clerks following any blacks that come in while the white customers are stealing them blind.

Name: MOTHERSHIP
Comment: This ain't nothing new, but McNasty, don't cha think they should start with your President and the rest of the titans of big business? He's/they're the biggest thugs around. Thank you, Khufu, that's about the gist of it

Name: cookie
Comment: Beboyz> I TOTALLY AGREE!!!

Name: Raypeazy
Comment: Realistically, if some of our tax dollars aren't "jacked" for this purpose then they will get used for another shady reason! I am military so imagine how I feel knowing billions are used to support a war that I also have to physically participate in...sleeping in a tent no less. I represent with my tax dollars, blood, sweat, tears and time away from my family. Rappers will never be more "thuggish" or dangerous than those that choose to watch them!

Name: TommyStrong
Comment: I agree khufu...someone in law enforcement told me a looonnnggg time ago...and one of the other things they are monitoring is their relationship to gang activity

Name: Exmun
Comment: But you gotta admit that its kinda hard NOT to watch rappers and their people when they (the rappers) create music and cottage industries bragging about their supposed connections to crime and thuggery. I'm personally not surprised and I can at least understand why someone might want to waste taxpayers money following rappers and their tomfoolery. The average rapper today has yet to master that principle of being "above reproach." And as long as they keep glorifying murder, drug runnin' and the like... they will get what they get. And I won't be personally offended because of it.

Name: DCGG
Comment: EXMUN-- I couldn't agree with you more-Rappers run around with huge entourages with names like C-Murder, Murder Ink, getting shot, carrying guns, constantly in trouble with the law, glorifying the gangster lifestyle and low and behold they're under survillence by the feds and we should be surprised or offended by it? Why? They make millions of dollars and continue to act like their on the got damn corner slingin dope and shyt - Fock em - let they %*$es get investigated!

Comment: Who gives a fukkkk? The world is what it is. I think we--MOST AMERICANS--focus on the wrong issues. What y'all--WE--better be WATCHING is when the Orientals dump our debt and thereby devalue the dollar. You'll have to show up at what's left of Tower Records with a shopping cart full of near-worthless Benjamins in order to buy a rapper's inflated CD. lulu.com/michaelclayton

Comment: I wonder when people will finally be able to discern between entertainment and reality. Just because you don't like what someone's stage name is, then that's a green light to investigate them? Knowing the centuries of history that this country has of prosecuting black and brown folks for the most inconsequential of things, I find myself wondering why any person of color would in 2006 support any government-funded group who targets young black men just because they are wealthy entertainers. It is simply mind-boggling to me. How can person of color want more young (or old, for that matter) black men going through the system and being placed under supervision even though no crime has been committed? It is people with these types of opinions who are way more threatening than any of these rappers, who are nothing more than entertainers, regardless of what their lyrics tell you. It's all entertainment. If it wasn't, Young Jeezy and the Clipse would have been put in jail a long time ago for all the claims of selling cocaine that they have made on their albums. Instead, they're thriving and selling records, a legitimate occupation. And still they're subject to surveillance. And this is OK with you people here supporting the hiphop cops?

Name: Raypeazy
Comment: Rap is entertainment just like R&B or rock. Sure some of the acts come from gang affiliated backgrounds or violent hoods. So do pro athletes, gospel singers and elected officials. I think part of the problem is these folks are "given" an image to sustain in order to sell records. Record execs push that and the theme of their music. The problems come when these naive wannabes start believing their own hype...and have a crew of about 20 or so real thugs standing behind them. Never had a gun and never touched one but now your image requires it. Shyt!! Give a child a gun and he is going to shoot it to hear the sound...that's real. If you think about any no nonsense thugs you know or have known...they wouldn't conduct themselves like the rappers do. Thuggin'/gangsta lifestyle involves a lot of things but taking unnecessary chances to get locked up or arrested isn't one of em. Can't enjoy your money in jail! Real thugs won't tell the World "I slang dope every day"...in between manicures and recording sessions. Please!! Let the dummies get locked up for being just that....DUmB!!!

Name: McNasty
Comment: Now Mothership you know that's too much like right! Besides when you're doing dirt, the president is doing dirt the first thing you think to do is deflect - what better way to keep folk from looking too closely at you! Additionally, bushit ain't hiding nothing - he's in our face with his bullshyt and laughing his behind off cause it's not a damned thing we can do about it.

Name: MOTHERSHIP
Comment: McNasty, we can do alot, but we don't. We just sit there and watch 'em do it, in our little comfort zone. Instead of flippin' this mother on it's ear collectively. That's why it is the way it is.

Name: McNasty
Comment: You're right but as it stands we're powerless. Until we collectively come together things will be status quo. We talk a good game but there is enough of a black vote that we could have hollered loud and clear IMPEACHMENT!

Name: MOTHERSHIP
Comment: My point exactly! I wrote several Congressmen and requested that impeachment proceedings began against Bush for this his blantant disregard for rights of Americans and his raping of the Constitution. But we all need to be down with this instead of flappin' their coffe coolers. Action always speaks louder than words.

Comment: >Thunny: I hear what you're saying , but the problem is that a lot of the negative elements in rap don't believe that it's just entertainment, neither do their constituents (or wouldn't have people stabbing/shooting each other). Many even say that the life they rap about is the life that they currently live. So if that's true, then it seems logical that this type of behavior would attract investigation/surveillance. Maybe they need not brag/rap about past crimes that the statute of limitations may not have expired on yet.

Name: Southernbelle
Comment: Go head Mothership, now that's what I'm talking about, a lady with a plan. Boy, have black foks evolved we went from communists in the 60's and 70's to leaders of organized crimes.

Name: SpelmanRho
Comment: >Mothership: Thanks for the sites.

Name: Thunny
Comment: Spelman, I know you can't be suggesting that without rap and rappers there would not be people stabbing/shooting each other... ALL of these negative elements blamed on rap and Hiphop existed far before rap music and Hiphop culture was ever dreamed of. It's a cop out to blame society's ills on rap and Hiphop.

Name: musbdherbs
Comment: Thun....unfortunately people will never be able to differentiate between the two. It's NEVER going to happen. That's why there's a such thing as a "public persona." A "public persona" is what's used to determine how well you like/dislike someone. Curtis Jackson, Earl Simmons, Sean Combs, Lil Kim et. al all have "public persona's." People base their opinions of them on that...not their "personal" knowledge. That being said, if I were to rap/sing about "I like to kill police officers" I would expect to be on somebody's watch list. Now although way out in left field, If some woman on EUR always talked shyt like "Now watch mama go up and down dip the jaws crazy--UH Say my name baby, Before you nut I'ma dribble down your butt cheek, make you wiggle and giggle just a little I'm drinkin babies Then I cracks for the Mercedes …Ohh, wee, I see, your girl ain't a freak like me or Adina ha" ALL THE TIME TALKIN SHYT LIKE THAT...Most people would probably believe that's exactly how she likes it. It may not be an accurate portrayal but w/o any further investigation, that's probably what people would think. Sure, hip hop has gotten the raw end of da deal but they glorify a criminal life in many of their lyrics and more often than should end up in jail over this stupid shyt. As long as you continue to have people coming from environments where the only viable option they see is "becoming a rapper"....hip hop will continue to be inaundated w/"streetness" And for a good number of them...it's not just entertainment...it's real. Hell 4 real 4 real, based on their "music" most people think that Yolanda Adams and Smokie Norful are christians. Is that an unreasonable azumption?

Name: SpelmanRho
Comment: >Thunny: You're right. I wasn't suggesting that people in general stab each other because of rp music. I'm talking about the violence that occurs in the world of rap itself (i.e. The shankin' at the Source awards and what not).

Name: SpelmanRho
Comment: "rap music"

Name: SilentJay
Comment: Perhaps the Feds could have spent thier time investigating things more important. You know like large numbers of young Arab wanting to learn how to FLY PLANES for example!

Name: Gemami
Comment: Mothership, thank you for providing that site. There are a lot of excellent points that I would like to add my $.02 cents to. Yes, some rap labels are started with drug money or other illegal means but being that someone like T.I. or Jay-Z would 9 out of 10 times be turned down for a business loan I can rationalize the means to the end. I don't see this being about names like C-Murder, Def Row or Murder Inc – but as Khufu said, economics and power. America is witnessing too many young Black men getting too wealth and possibly achieving power. I just think, what it Puff, Jermaine Dupri and Master P used their wealth and power to speak out again injustice – what a movement. For me this is what this whole surveillance is about – finding something incriminating, take away their freedom and wealth so they become powerless and voiceless.

Name: MOTHERSHIP
Comment: You're welcome Germani! Your point is on point. Hell, they killed Malcolm and Dr. King through this same surveillance technique. If they're gonna be peepin' us then we may as well make it worth their while and do some thangs. SilentJay, on the real!

Name: MOTHERSHIP
Comment: Spelman and Southernbelle, you all are very welcome, now let's get this shyt started.

Name: PHScott
Comment: I could SWEAR Chuck D. and Public Enemy tried to tell us this... OVER 18 YEARS AGO!!!!! The government HAS to watch these things. It is their job to know when the people are preparing to rise up against the oppression it feels. Something will set it off- another senseless beating at the hands of a racist cop, tired of paying $3 for a gallon of gas- and hip-hop is just the tool to pull a group of people together. So yes, the gub ment will continue to watch because it cannot afford to be unprepared if the American people decide they are fed up and feel it's time to voice its displeasure, either through demonstrations or all-out violence.

Name: yeawhateva
Comment: Well lets face it, They spend alot of money persueing these folks because of thier jelousy. Black folks make more money in entertainment and they feel the nee dto destroy everything we do. envy is all it is. We sinple found a way to turn a negetive into a positive and now they want a piece of it. I have known some dealers to go legit after making one last donation to thier bank accounts. one is even a lawyer making 300,000 a year now. go figure...lol He paid his own way thru law school HAHAHAH!!!
