Comment: URRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG! I WISH folks would stop buying into this "downlow" crap. This is : 1) Not a "new" phenomena (men of ALL races have been bi/gay for centuries and lying to their female partners about it) 2) Not a "black" thing and I wish it would stop being characterized as such.

Comment: Spel you are correct. I have a problem with them saying heterosexual men with wives and girlfriends that have sex with men. That is an oxymoron to me. If your are a male having sex male regardless of your race or if you have a girlfriend/wife, you are not heterosexual.

Comment: Hi Spelman; being on the low isn't a new thing but I do believe it needs to be discussed in our community. It's not a "black" thing but with most of our men who engage in that lifestyle are adamant about saying they are not gay/bi. Most of all, the "downlow" life does undermine and eventually destroys black love relationships. I feel that there are enough vices existing already to erode the black family and community, why create another vice?

Comment: SpelmanRho, I couldn't agree with you more. As a straight black man, I too get sick of this "Down Low" thing being characterized as as black thing. Also, as many of you said, there is no such thing as being "heterosexual" AND sleeping with the same sex.

Comment: Real--I have no problem with BET talking about the spread of HIV/AIDs in the black community--but why do they have to frame it in the sensational (and misleading) DL hype. As SpelmanRho expertly stated it ain't new, and it ain't black. Drug use, unprotected sex with multiple partners, are all contributing factors to the rise of AIDS--not just DL men. If we're gonna talk about lets speak on all of it--The focus on DL men sends the message that "oh my man is way to masculine to be DL so I ain't got to worry." Meanwhile ol' boy is having straight sex with every sista he can and still putting his partner at risk.

Comment: >Bertie: That's exactly what I'm talking about. Plus framing the IMPORTANT conversation about AIDS in a homosexual light further perpetuates the myth (that runs rampant in the black community) that AIDS is a disease of orientation instead of a disease of behavior. That lie has killed more folks than gay/bi-sexual black men in denial (because that's all DL is) ever will.

Comment: osun - i like fantasia, even more so now that i know how many people hate on her because she told the TRUTH about her life...she's a positive role model, someone taking all the hardships of her young life and making herself a success as an adult...i will cheer her on!

Comment: I wonder if BET will delve into the origins of "down low": SLAVERY. The slavemaster did not just creep into the female slave's sleeping area, and rape was another way for the slavemaster to break the male slave down.
