Comment: Nice sentiments, and many people I know feel the same way, but I think its a useless battle at this point. The horse, as they say, is already out of the barn. The policymakers behind he scene have already decided to turn the US, Mexico, and Canada into a North American Community similar to the European Union. Trying to stop this is like trying to stop a runaway train with your bare hands... not gonna happen. Watch and see. The term, "North American Community" will start to be used more and more. Just google that term and you'll see it's being talked about more and more.Agreements like NAFTA, CAFTA, etc are just a part of the master plan. America's days, as we now know it, are numbered.

Comment: What these politicians see in these "illegals" are future votes. They could care less about maintaining the border because the new largest minority will become the majority by 2025 or 2030. They are looking at the future/present voting block. Numbers matter. None of the Washington folks have the balls to curtail the current state of "illegal" immigration. As far as America becoming part of a "North American Community"?? Nah white folks are too crafty for that ish to happen. What we need is honest dialogue. The type that is had over the internet. Whether we agree or disagree should not be a deterent to open discussion. Black America has to be involved with this issue pro or con.

Comment: Ahh - A common sense, logical approach. I like it. Too bad our elected officials are too busy pandering to non-citizens. I like what the GA. governor is doing, starting to 'enforce the laws that are on the books' - simple approach isn't. The easy thing for proponents of illegal aliens - yes, they are illegal aliens - not undocumented workers - is to call those of us that are expecting officials to enforce the laws as racist...its a good tactic that they are using but I would hope Americans would get 'it' before everything else goes to hell.

Comment: I beg to differ with J Phill on many issue. This again is one. First of all, I will assume that he is aware that the WSJ editorial is extremely right-wing. I normally read it for laugh. Secondly, for him to assume that the mass marchers were all illegal immigrants is to not even understand the issues at all. This debate is about our image around the globe. To be quite honest to criminalize, making it a felony, the illegal immigrant should also include making it a felony to hire an illegal immigrant. Enforcement of those laws will stem the flow of illegals significantly. That is rarely included in any debate regarding immigration. Of course, with pro-business Republicans in running both houses and the presidency we won't have that discussion any time soon.

Comment: VickieE, if you look real closely at this, you can see this is not just a “right wing” issue. Yes, the Republicans are in power, but this new immigration proposal has very strong Democrat support as well. Both Democrats and Republicans are in pushing this, for different, self serving reasons. . Pro-business Republicans see these illegal immigrants as a source of cheap labor, while Democrats see them as a source of cheap votes, since most of these immigrants will end up becoming citizens one day. As far as I’m concerned, both sides of the political arena are selling us out.

Comment: Blackman, actually the idea of a “North American Community” isn’t as far fetched as it some might think. Just by googling the term, you’ll find thousands of references to it. This is a idea that has been discussed for quite some time, and is just beginning to get some media attention. This reminds me of when the term "New World Order" was first used publicly in the early 90's, but now the concept is out in the open and commonly discussed & accepted. I feel like the NAC idea is a concept that will become accepted, over time ... at least, there are powerful people in this country who want it to be. One of the best articles I’ve seen recently on it is at this link: http://www.renewamerica.us/columns/spingola/050715 Check it out for yourself. Peace.

Comment: Again I ask, what part of illegal do these folks not understand?? It's an insult to us as U.S. citizens that our spineless politicians aren't doing the job of protecting our borders and pandering to lawbreakers. What kind of message does this send to our children? That it's okay to break the law because you're be able to get over. The companies that hire them are a bigger shame. Never have to worry about them asking for a raise or striking. If they leave then there will be dozens more to replace them. Bush has really f'ucked this country up, plain and simple.

Comment: I thought this was about ALL illegal’s not just Mexicans. I mean I don’t understand what the problem is getting them the hell up out of here. I don’t care what their situation is ILLEGAL means just that. I still don’t understand how the hell they get off thinking they have some political clout in a country that is not their own, and there here illegally. I watched them march on TV and I was baffled at how they were walking around carrying Mexican flags while they are fighting to say here. They need to be sent back for that STUPID move alone. lol

Comment: That stunt they keep saying that they do jobs that americans don't want to do is a bunch of bullshyt. The problem is that americans want to work for a living wage. The companies are getting over and the "guest worker" idea is pretty stupid. The politicians are spineless any blacks that support this are stupid as well because their situation doesn't have a dayum thing to do with us.

Comment: Why is it that when we say illegal immigrants, we always think Hispanic/Latino? There are many illegals who are of European. We never see these people on TV. I don't think that the average American could identify an illegal by sight. When you talk to some, they think if someone can not speak english, they are illegal. The fact remains that there are Americans who do not speak english, but they are still Americans. I question whether this is another issue that politicians have raised in order to provide a distraction from some other very important issue.

Comment: It always surprises me how we complain about our situation, but when another group is similarly situated, we have no compassion. When we talk about being American, we say things like: African American, African in America, African captive in America, among other things. Now that the media and politicians have raised the issue of illegal immigrants, we are all of the sudden Americans and 'those people' should get the hell out of our country. In one situation, we deny our American identity, and the other we champion it.
To me the issue is whether our immigration policies will be equitable, or will they predominently impact people of color (African, Hispanic, Asian). I have a relative who is Irish. According to her there is a very organized underground network of Irish illegals in this country. They come in, get jobs (under the table), and interact with mainstream American society undetected. Are these people going to be impacted by our reform policies? Do we even acknowledge that these people exist?

Comment: I have a friend who is an illegal from Europe. She has been here for a decade or more. Came here on a legal VISA that expired and she never went back. Works under the table and all that. Interestingly, she is bitter towards Latinos (and the US Immigration Office) because it is easier for them to get a green card and then citizenship than it is for her being from Europe. The Europeans I know trying to gain citizenship have a difficult time. Many times, Europeans have to prove that they are specialized in their field and that no American can do their job. They need to be some sort of top of their game Scientist or Engineer.
Its kind of funny when people we know talk about all the illegals in the country and don't even realize that she's one of them. I commend her. She takes care of business. Purchased her own health insurance, pays for her own college. She doesn't have any children and isn't looking for any entitlements. She just wants the chance to be a citizen.

Comment: I never cease to be amazed at the Black voices crying out against "illegal immigration"....our tax dollars...they ought to speakEnglish...etc. ..etc....
Well Don't be Haters!
It's not Latino's fault that you changed your name to Toby....can't spell or pronounce Kunta Kinte...get scared when you see an African...look like a Frenchman....let um rape your mama...let um sell your babies...refused to listen to Bob Marley until the white folks embraced him....you don't hear them screaming "remember the Alamo" while jumping around in Daniel Boone "coonskin" caps.......steppin off the sidewalk for white folks.....lettin them burn their shanty's or burning them themselves..or lettin folks drag their daddy's out for lynchin' while they hide in the woods...
and Latino's buy a lot of stuff with labels of companies that they own in stores that they own...etc. etc...and you can't argue about how hard they work...and they work cheaper ....and if they can't find a job they can make a job cause they buy from each other.....and how they spend makes their dollar go further than ours...cause a Chevy is cheaper than a Benz ...maybe we could learn somethin'......hmmmm!
We need to JOIN the march.....have you seen the multitude of black/brown faces that look like you with the native American hair like your grandma's????? Did your mama come through the Mexican underground railroad? Maybe nobody would be mad if they didn't have so many black/brown/tan faces- your cousins left behind? Maybe a quick course in Spanish for us would be great and then we could communicate with our brothers and sisters who are %*$!ed at us for allowing our culture and heritage to be snatched away from us without a fight.
Maybe we should join the march and catch the spirit of what the f****, Ted Kennedy might have been saying when he said “goes to the heart of who we are as Americans.”
Maybe we should eat watermelon and chicken in public and when reproached we could tell folks where to shove it in Spanish...since we don't know what tribe we came from or what language we spoke because we are too busy buying Colgate and Mercedes and Sony and Tommy Hilfiger and dope... without a pot to %*$! in or a window that WE OWN to throw it out of....our Latino brothers and sisters are helping their mama's and taking care of their children and saving to buy houses and passing on their culture and their language ...and fighting to live in the land once stolen from them....and damn....if we can't join our brothers and sisters in this movement...then we need to keep our mouths shut real tight cause this outcry from US of all people, is pathetic and ignorant!
PS: how dare America/Bush use the word "illegal"!
