Beanie Sigel: I was robbed, shot

- Beanie Sigel's song
"Mac and Brad"
BEANIE SIGEL comes off in his music as a seasoned trigger-happy gangsta.
Dwight Grant, the rapper's real name, apparently does not.
Sigel, 32, told detectives that he was stuck up and shot in the middle of his childhood neighborhood yesterday morning.
He told cops that four attackers had spilled out of two cars and ordered him to hand over $75,000 worth of spoils from the music industry - Jacob the Jeweler watch and a platinum chain complete with a record-shaped pendant - along with about $3,000 in cash, police sources said.
One robber then shot the rapper in the shoulder before the group sped off, leaving the bleeding Sigel alone somewhere near 22nd and McClellan streets, a block from Sigel Street, which inspired the performer's moniker.
At 7:02 a.m., police said they received word from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania that the local celebrity had been shot. Sigel told police he had driven himself to the emergency room, cops said.
His car, a white Chevy Impala, remained parked for hours in the valet lane of the hospital's 34th Street entrance, surrounded by yellow crime-scene tape and flanked by no-parking signs.
Dried blood was smeared inside the driver's-side door and blood specks peppered the armrest like confetti. A child's car seat and several shopping bags sat abandoned in the back seat.
Sigel was released about 11:40 a.m. Gone was the menacing scowl, baggy clothes, and happy-go-lucky gait for which the rapper is known.
Instead, the sullen Sigel sat in a wheelchair, wearing a spotted hospital gown with matching pants. A white towel shielded his face from the gawking media as he was pushed to a shiny black Mercedes R350.
He talked with reporters from the sedan's back seat.
"I'm alive. I got shot. I am cool."
Detectives spoke with the rapper several times throughout the day, questioning him over and over about the details of his drama, police said.
"He appears to be cooperating with police," said Capt. Joseph O'Brian, of South Detectives.
But police sources said investigators are still skeptical about Sigel's story. Residents in his old 'hood said they never heard the gunshots, and police sources said cops still haven't tracked down enough evidence to corroborate Sigel's account.
No witnesses have come forward.
Also, cops were unable to find any shell casings in the street where Sigel said he had been shot.
"I would have heard the shots even from down here," said Christine Thomas, 61, McClellan Street block captain.

Comment: Thomas said she watched Sigel grow from a boy playing basketball inside the McDaniel Elementary schoolyard, across from her home, to a famous entertainer.
She said other residents told her about the shooting.
"It is a disgrace for him to get shot in his own neighborhood," she said. "That just shows how bad it is around here."
Despite the skepticism over Sigel's story, police sources with knowledge of the investigation said this is what happened:
The rapper partied with friends inside the Z-Bar, on Spring Garden Street near Front, in Northern Liberties - walking around the club wearing his gaudy chain, watch and bracelet.
He left the club with at least one friend about 3:30 a.m. and spent more time hanging outside.
The two men climbed into Sigel's Impala and headed toward Buist Avenue to drop his pal home.
Sigel dropped off his friend and drove toward South Philadelphia, crossing the Passyunk Avenue Bridge and then turning underneath the crumbling, decaying 25th Street bridge.
Moments later, Sigel looked in his rearview mirror and noticed a car that he thought was following his, and he pulled over on Snyder Avenue to let the car pass. Sigel switched roles and started to trail the other car.
The vehicle then made a left on 22nd Street and another left on McClellan and stopped. Sigel followed.
Two men jumped out of the car, one clutching a handgun. Before hopping out of his Impala, Sigel had just enough time to take off his bracelet, but didn't remove his prized watch and the chain.
Sigel was shocked that anybody would rob a rap star.
"Know who I am?" Sigel asked.
"Yeah, you know what this is about," said one of the guys.
Then, a second car pulled up behind Sigel. Two more men got out, one with a gun.
They ordered Sigel to hand over his watch and chain, then the second car sped off. The two remaining robbers told Sigel to get down on the ground.
Sigel refused and dashed toward his Impala.
The gunman fired four shots, hitting the rapper once in the shoulder.
It was unclear yesterday why Sigel, who lives in Lansdale with his family, had been heading toward his old stomping ground.

Comment: Hmmm. Interesting that we now have two cases in about 6 months of rappers who have been accosted by gunmen, only to suffer gunshot wounds to the arms. Hmmm. Am I really supposed to believe that the best a shooter that close to the victim could do was shoot him in the arms? Interesting. My Spidey sense is going to have to mull this one over, but at first glance this seems like it could be a promotional ploy. Especially since no one heard any gunshots at a time in the morning when people are just leaving their homes to go to work. And those Philly streets are narrow - someone would have heard something. Hmmmm...

Comment: Boy, people can't get shot without you'll thinking everything is a "promotion ploy". What really would acting like he got shot in the arm do for him. As for no one hearing anything, did you think for a sec, that they could have had a silencer on the gun. I doubt this is for publicity because unlike Camron, all he said was I'm alive, I got shot. Doesn't really sound like he's elaborating on talking much about it for "promotional" reasons. He didn't follow that statement up with "Album is in stores now". This story sounds pretty believable and if I know Beans...this ain't over. Beans is from the streets, things like this happen everyday, its just so happen to happen to a rapper.

Comment: You know Beans, asiatic? Oh, I didn't think so. You're saying beans is from the streets like Cam isn't. Or that dude Gravy for that matter. This is a trend that has proven effective in at the very least directing attention toward the victim. Beans hasn't had an album out in close to a year. What better way to put the spotlight back on him, if for a short a period of time? I guarantee Beans has a song/freestyle out about the whole experience on a mixtape. Wouldn't that be exploiting this case of misfortune, which in turn could be construed as a promotional ploy? Because right now Beans is pretty irrelevant on the current rap landscape. Look, he has us talking about him right now! His plan's already working! LOL

SOHH has learned that Philadelphia authorities have reason to believe that there was no crime committed at the Beanie Sigel shooting earlier this morning (May 25), and that the incident may have been a publicity stunt, according to a source close to the investigation.
As SOHH previously reported, Sigel (Born Dwight Grant) was shot twice in his upper arm during what he described as a failed robbery at 8 a.m. this morning in Philadelphia.
According to Sigel, who talked to authorities after the shooting, five black men in two cars cornered him while he was in his vehicle. One of the men, who Sigel detailed as a 30-something standing at approximately 5'11" with a beard, sporting jeans and Timberland boots, fired the shots at him. The Philadelphia rapper then drove himself to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he was treated and released later on today.
"Police do not believe that it was a robbery -- it's looking like a publicity stunt," the source told SOHH. "No way Beans gets robbed and only gets hit in the arm... Not in South Philly. He's like the mayor around there. No one even heard any commotion, and believe me when I tell you South Philly blocks are small, tight and dense."
Rumors had begun circulating that the shooting was connected to Sigel's step-father who was murdered last year but the SOHH source quickly shot down the speculation.
"His step-pops was murked out in a mob way," the source told SOHH. "Sigel would have gotten it similar, if that was the case. But shot twice in his arm? At 8 a.m.? I just can't see it. [Reports] are coming back now and they are saying there is no crime scene where Sigel said he was shot."
Sigel has been plagued with legal trouble in the last few years. Earlier this year, the Philly emcee was found guilty of a misdemeanor %*$ault for punching a 53-year-old man and breaking his eye socket.
He was acquitted of attempted murder last September. Months later, he was jailed until he paid $26,000 in child support and $2,000 in fines. According to his attorney, Fortunato N. Perri Jr., Sigel now plans to return to the studio, work on his clothing line and get back into acting.

Comment: Rapper Beanie Sigel Heads Straight To Studio After Shooting, Details Emerge
By Nolan Strong
Date: 5/25/2006 8:00 pm
Rapper Beanie Sigel was released from a Philadelphia hospital this morning (May 25), after suffering gun shot wounds to both arms in what police believe was an attempted robbery.
Sigel rode away from the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in a chauffeured vehicle with a towel over his head and his arm in a sling.
The rapper was shot earlier this morning around 8:00 a.m. Sources told AllHipHop.com that Sigel was found near 22nd and Sigel Street, the street from which the rapper's name derives.
Sources said his family has a residence in the area.
Sigel told police that five black men in two vehicles boxed him in and that a bearded man in jeans and boots opened fired, hitting the rapper once in his upper-right arm.
Sigel's wallet, watch and other items were taken.
The rapper was treated for his injury and released. Police have yet to announce suspects in the shooting, and detectives are unsure where in Philadelphia the shooting actually occurred.
Reps for Sigel told AllHipHop.com that the rapper went straight to the studio after the shooting to finish recording songs for his new album, tentatively titled The Bad Guy.
Sigel is planning to release an untitled song to this weekend (May 27).
In November, Sigel was briefly jailed by a Philadelphia Family Court judge for missing back child support payments.
In September, the rapper was acquitted of attempted-murder charges in relation to a 2003 shooting in front of a Philadelphia bar. The next month, his stepfather Sam Derry was shot and killed and then set on fire. Police arrested a 22-year-old Philadelphia man for the murder.

Comment: Is this part of rapper publicity budget? Studio Time… $5,000… Producer… $10,000… Publicity Shooting & Attempted Robbery… Priceless. When I initially heard the details this morning on the radio, it didn’t make sense, even Tom Joyner was skeptical. It sound like a set up more than a robbery… but a publicity stunt… that never occurred to me. Does this boy have talent? I would think for a rapper to pull this type of stunt his stuff isn’ that good to begin with.

Comment: Gemami, Beans is a good rapper with a loyal fanbase. However his last album flopped, partly because he was in jail when it came out and couldn't really promote it properly. He did have a couple of videos for it though, but to little fanfare. The thing is, what label is Beans signed to? He's not with Jay-Z anymore. I don't think he's with Dame Dash anymore. There were rumors suggesting he was going to sign to G-Unit. So basically you can see that Beans is desperate to regain the relevance that he once had -- and what better way to do that than to become a victim of a robbery and shooting, helping to evoke fans' feelings of sympathy mixed with expectation and anticipation of his next release? Not to mention it boosts Beans's street cred since, according to the story, he got shot and rove himself to the hospital - another rapper surviving a hail of bullets. It worked for 50 and Pac, why not Beans? Or at least that's probably his line of thinking. The young men are taking over in rap and Beans is no spring chicken. His time in the rap game is running out and he knows this, so this is his last ditch effort. And Phillymom proved my point - he's got a song being released today. How convenient.

Comment: Thun, you're my boy and all, but damn homie! LOL! For the most, you assume something like this is for promotional reasons. Come one now, do you really think Broadstreet really needs promotion or "MORE" street credibility? You already know dude is grimey as hell.
Broadstreet getting shot is not going to help him saleswise. We seen what album did after he got out of jail. It seems to me that the people THAT DON'T KNOW SHYT ABOUT RAP (excluding you) think things of this nature will skyrocket albums sales. 90% of the time, it doesn't. People said the said thing about Killa. He got shot AND went after Jay, is his album doing great? No, it's doing what it usually does. The same thing can be said about Beans when his next album drops.

Comment: I think it's quite possible that this is a publicity stunt...so many of these rappers want to prove how hard they are...how thugged out they are and how much street cred they have...this shoothing is just too coincidental with his album comming out shortly...he get's in the news for a shooting it may generate interest in his new album...which is more money for him...sad but it could be true....
Name:
Thunny
Comment: Al, that's probably true that this will not help Beans at all, but we can't deny that he's been out of the spotlight for a long time and now, right on the eve of him releasing a new song, he just happens to get ambushed and robbed and shot at close range but not killed? What the hell kind of killers and shooters in DC and Philly run up on you and only shoot you in the arms? You got bouncers here in NYC who are better shots than these dudes! I'm just skepitcal. But I agree that I don't see the good that can come out of this for Beans. His career is a wrap.

Beans is cool with me, but I agree with you all of the way, his career is a wrap.

Point 2: NJBLKGUY you have issues my friend. I can't ride with on wishing bad things to happen to rap artist. Thats just wrong.
Point 3: More ignance for us as black people to mull over . The self destructive behavior continues despite all that we have already lost. I know that no one got killed this time but it still falls within that realm of stupidity. If its true ofcourse
Point 4: Who in thier right mind would rob Beanie. I'm not his accoutant so I don't know how is paper flow is doing but did those State Property movies do that well. I'm not promoting robbery but QuestLove wasn't in the area.(Point for is obviously my lame attempt at humor).
