Comment: Incredible...it's not quite thirty years later and while the names and tactics changed...the game is still the same! Bill accept your award on behalf of the many admirers of your work that still listen to you today...and isn't it ironic that Sony has digitized and re-released all his works on CD.

Comment: I hope Lee Bailey ask Bill Withers
about his (alleged) wife beating charge when he was married to Denise Nicholas.

Comment: Dang...I forgot about the wife beatin...He is an amazing talent and I'm curious to see if he addresses this in Part 2 of the interview. that probably explains why they baited him with a naked white girl.

Comment: Now if he had been a white artist with those kinds of hits (Tom Petty for instance), they would have given him his own studio. Knew the music industry was shady, but the story of attempted entrapment using the naked four-year-old is one of the most bizarre I've ever heard.

Comment: Think my people, think: Darlene Love was 'royally' ripped off. The Ronettes were only paid because of Ronnie's relationship with Phil Spector, and THAT really didn't help! Patti LaBelle should have so much more than what she has. She ain't po', but she should be wealthy! The machine behind the music does what it wants to do, when it wants to do it. Little Richard is always harping about it! Bill Withers was, and continues to be a strong Africana Brother who did not take any sh_t! Now, as to Denise Nichols, she believed that her skin tone gave her permission to say ANYTHING. Withers was not a brother who allowed the term, '%*$!(@' to be used lightly or otherwise. Denise got beside herself and hurled the term at her then, husband. Hence, getting smacked in her mouth. That was common knowledge during their marriage, and one of the main reasons for their divorce. I AIN'T MAD AT BILL! I don't necessarily agree with the action, BUT, I UNDERSTAND!

Comment: Man!!! I hope this guy has all his faculities about him. He sounds like he has some kind of Jesus complex. I understand people in the music industry, as well as any other industries, are unscrupulous but this story about the naked little girl sounds like someone was toking a little too much.

Comment: PEACHES4U stole my thunder with the revalation about the "abuse". For the folks that are perplexed about the "set up" they tried to snag him up in, I don't know what country yawl been living in but this does not strike me as so unbelievable. The lengths at which the "power structure" has gone to keep Black men from ascending to their natural place may suprise and shock those uninitiated in their own history.

Comment: Patti Labelle is not wealthy because she was in a group that did not write songs....she had a solo career as a singer...for the most part I don't kow of any songwriting credit. The money comes from writing -- not always recording.

Comment: I always heard that Bill's wife, a Real Star was heavy on the coke scene and was just a bit too swift for ol' Bill. I heard that she slighted him many times in front of her friends. He sang about it in his very first album, somethoing like: "You have the nerve to call me narrow minded cause I'm not loose and indiscrete". Maybe he had a situation like Mike Tyson who was outta his league with his first wife. Who knows (or really cares?).

Comment: I have been in the business of music for more than 20 years. I have seen mindless insults to true artists. I can believe the story about the little girl. Although Bill says he couldn't get in the studio, his music is timeless. His music is a constant on s urban stations and is used on commercials. If he handled his business right the royalties are paying off. It is unfortunate that some of us had to address the negative about alleged wife abuse. I am happy the industry has decided to honor him. His personal life is his business. He chose to share his music with us not his personal life.

Comment: Mothership, Teigh may be comparing Patti LaBelle's wealth to her white counterparts. Also, Patti's not doing the diabetic testing commercials for fun; she needs the money, honey.

Comment: WOW...I didn't know about the wife beating issues but realistically he hasn't done anything worse than any other entertainer back then and even now and his contribution to music by far is a lot greater then a lot of others with much worse issues. Plain and simply it was and still is a racist industry and he chose not to deal with it. I bet if he held a concert today, it would sell out and the majority of folks would be peckerwoods!!! Very good interview...Wow

Comment: Stephanie: I haven't heard that term in years "Peckerwoods". That's what my neighborhood folks used to call them back in the 50's and 60's. I had to laugh 'cause it brought back comical memories.
