Comment: I just have to ask why Ms. Cotton insists on chiding black New Orleanians for wanting to retain a black mayor? I suppose she, like most white people, will have black folks believe that voting for the white candidate would have automatically served a greater good. It is very possible that black people coalesced around the mayor with the expectation that his policies will be geared more in our favor in his second term - basically giving him a pass on his prior policy direction when was beholden to a different base.
Racial solidarity was also shown by white voters but that seems to not be noteworthy to some. White voters voted for Nagin’s opponent in the same numbers that blacks voted for him. But of course, whites rationally voted their conscience and blacks mindlessly voted solely on race, right? I expect this sort of commentary from white people; but from a SO-CALLED black writer, it is not only insulting - it is divisive and counterproductive.
I’ve read some of your other writings and it appears that you have a tremendous disdain for Mayor Nagin. That does not justify blasting black Nagin voters because you are disappointed that he was re-elected. And if you really want to “represent” the black community, you can start by not disrespecting us.
