Comment: aLTHOUGH i MAY NOT AGREE WITH YOU ON SOME OF YOUR OPINIONS i RESPECTED ((excuse the caps)) your opinion nonetheless. What i don't egree with in this commentary is the all of the name-calling and bitterness. You are better than that, stick to the intellectual and statistical arguments that indeed make Cosbys remarks sound stupid and unresearched.

Name: coesmo
Comment: I think this commentary is a bit harsh..

Name: Gemami
Comment: Yeah, it was a bit harsh... but that's D... as I was told before, look at the content not the words... overall I agree with Darryl's %*$essment just question if Cosby admitted to drugging those women as well as having more than one illegitimate child. All I know is I can't wait for this debate to begin...

Name: Winn30344
Comment: Darn if you didn't nail that crap Cosby is talking..good article.

Name: Kofi
Comment: DJ I wholeheartedly agree. The "Cos" needs to be put on blast whenever he gets out of pocket. It seems like we have our black version of Ann Coulter. DJ I know you will have fun putting the people on Cosby's bandwagon on blast as well!!!

Name: mgirard
Comment: We have to be very careful how we judge somebody that is still in motion. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Bill Cosby and hear what he had to say more in depth. I was genuinely impressed with the amount of concern that he is showing for our community. Bill Cosby is admittedly not a perfect man but who among us is. He has given millions of his dollars to support our young men and women to attend college. We are falling right into the hands of our enemies. We need to stop needless criticism of one another. I am not his spokesperson. I do not receive a check from Bill Cosby. One thing I do know for sure is that we need all of our people to work towards a future for our people.

Name: Kofi
Comment: Cosby is essentially a classist. His giving is for the elites. I have no problem with how Cos spends his money but, to bash poor black people, he should expect to be bashed back!!!!

Name: Renegade
Comment: Right On DJ!!!!!!

Name: DarrylJames
Comment: Funny that people have problems with my harsh words for Cosby, when he had harsher words for Black people. How harsh was it when he called Black men "sperm-shooting machines?" And, how harsh was it to claim that "most" of us are in prison? Tell that bastard to stop being so harsh and his critics will stop being so harsh. Remember, we all loved him until HE turned on US. Mgirard, I’m glad you sat with him, but you should have asked him some real questions, instead of slurping up his empty rhetoric. He is the one who began judging people--Kofi is right. Cosby only supports an elite group of Black people, yet he bashes poor folks. He needs his old irrelevant %*$ kicked!! Cosby said: "THE LOWER ECONOMIC PEOPLE are not holding up their end in this deal. These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids -- $500 sneakers for what? And they won't spend $200 for 'Hooked on Phonics.' I can't even talk the way these people talk: 'Why you ain't,' 'Where you is'... You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth!" WTF?? ONLY "lower economic people?"

Name: DarrylJames
Comment: Cosby said: "I can't even talk the way these people talk: 'Why you ain't,' 'Where you is'... " Cos, what is this: "hey-be, man-be, how-be you-be?" you created that lexicon in Fat Albert and I don’t know any Black person who talks that way.

Comment: Great article DJ!!! One of your best that I've read to date.

Name: SweetieDarlin
Comment: Woo Hoo Darryl, that's a good one. I won't comment on Cosby today---and anyway YOU said it all. I thought the colorful language was appropriate and gave me a chuckle here and there. I know you are prepared for a major debate when people read the column, you know how people feel about their beloved Dr. Cosby around EUR.

Name: jaybird9
Comment: DJ, DJ, DJ!!! I've been following your articles for quite some time, and this is my first comment I've made about your article. I've loved it, someone needs to put this dude on blast!!!! Every black person knows we have our share of problems, but how dare this dude say a certain group of us are Sh!@!!!! One thing we haven't done in our community is air our "dirty laundry", and he knows white people thinks he a creditable black man. I used to love Bill Cosby, but as a young, educated black man, I despise him!!!!! He's one of the biggest hypocrits since Clarence Thomas, and the majority of his supporters are black woman, who he happens to paint in a positive light. Great article DJ, you got some skills kid!!!!

Name: Thunny
Comment: Speak on it! Somebody arrest this serial drugging groper so he can be reunited with "most" of us who are in prison!

Name: ronnieb
Comment: talk about "judge not, lest ye be judged"! Unfortunately, Mr.Cosby, in his zeal to be an instructor of the foolish, has left his flank uncovered...and i say this respectfully, no one called his devotion to family or parenting skills into question when one of his daughters was battling drug addiction years back.

Name: DarrylJames
Comment: Thunny got me crackin up fa sho!! Can you imagine The Cos, sucking on human pudding pops? ROTFLMBAO!! And, ronnieb, you are right. We gave him a pass for that and his mistress. Nor, did we call into question the alleged connection to the Russian Mafia in his son’s death. And, if he hadn’t been on his rage against the Black machine, we probably would have given him a pass for Fat Albert—the motion picture.

Name: SweetieDarlin
Comment: Y'all need to stop---Human Pudding Pops OMG! Unfortunately in some people's zeal to think the Cosby was NOT talking about them, they fail to realize if you aren't in Cosby's income bracket, he's talking about you too, not just 'Pookie en dem' down the street, he has disdain for most black people and this didn't come overnight. He has been spraying his venom since the late 80s, offering unsolicited advice (Eddie Murphy's joke from RAW in 1987, Wanda Sykes at the award show in 2002) and basically being negative,he even had a negative comment to make on Arsenio when they pushing for the Gang Truce. I've known for years that "American's FAvorite Dad' was a bitter, crotchedy old man. Amazingly enough people don't think he has problems or they pooh-pooh his own history saying the message is still good. His supporters feel it's okay for him to say something about us po' pitiful black folks, saying it needs to be said but even if that was the case, the people he criticizes really don't gave a fat rat's azz about what he says, so him making the comments is pointless except to show to the world that we can't stick together at all. And do keep in mind that these are lectures that he is getting paid to do, black people are actually inviting him and paying him to talk ish about other black people. No wonder other races think we are a joke.

Comment: I believe Cos' tirades are a reflection of his subconscious, i.e., he's had several affairs throughout his marriage, the most public acknowledgement being his affair with Autumn Jackson's mother. Now, there is an ongoing investigation brought on by the allegations of Andrea Constand. He has admitted to inappropriate actions: sexual misconduct. There's another legal action pending pertaining to a Tamara Green, amongst others. He's the epitome of that which he speaks. Darryll is not blinded by his money or his accomplishments: Cos has a much 'hood rat' in him as those with the utmost street smarts, and it has been displayed. Additionally, his daughter Erinn has on more than several occasions voiced his lack of parenting skills. She has stated her life is the prime example. I have relative in the entertainment industry whom states Bill is no different than some, it's just that his PR machine does a very good job! I find it very interesting that Camille has distanced herself from his tirades. She's in one 'house' and he's in another. Also, I believe he's embarrassed [under the illusion of inclusion]: a few of his cronies at CBS convinced him that he could buy the network, and of course when it was revealed just how many duckets he truly had, the ranks and file closed the doors. Now, even me with my 'million dollar white boy's education' knows that CBS was not about to allow the network to be purchased by ' good ole' Cos no matter how wholesome his image, to them, the color ain't right!

Comment: What can I say, I feel DJ's anger over that Spellman speech Cosby gave but I think that DJ goes over the top in some of the more personal statements made towards Cosby himself. I've heard Cosby try to explain his point of view on Tavis Smiley's thirty minute show. I agree that victory starts at home and black people need to do more in thier own homes to fix some of these problems. But just as black women don't like being denegrated by rappers in thier music and video's, I don't like being denegrated by Cosby at Spellman. I think that Bill Cosby, Spike Lee and some other older black people have a pention for alienating the thier people while standing on thier soapboxes and pointing out the failings of the black community. I agree with DJ that it's not right to omit the enequities in the justice and the overall racism of the american school system while scolding your own people for not making sure thier kids can read. But it seems to be the methodology of some older black people to do just that. YES blacks need to work harder to clean thier own homes, there is NO getting around that however, perahps Bill, and Spike, and maybe even our man DJ could all find ways to speak to each other without the venom and putting each other down and callin each other names. It takes away from the serious discussion on issues that need to be addressed when the ears of the listerners our clogged with negative words and the heart and minds are shutdown by the cold of indifference.

Comment: You know, just because someone has paid for an education, does not mean that they are educated. A degree certainly does not make one an intellectual. In his waning years, I believe Bill Cosby has become senile and most assuredly is out of his mind. With a wave of his magic wand he has belittled all black men and all black working poor. When has Bill last lived in a black neighborhood with the average black person or the average black family. His millions have really put him out of touch with the community. I think Bill is angry and frustated over the death of his only son. If he really wants to do a service, he should start a campaign against the criminal, immigrant, Russian element that resides here in these United States. It was a Russian immigrant who murdered his son as his son was helping a white lady friend. So, getting rid of the immigrant, Russian, criminal element would be a good crusade banner for Bill to take up. Because what Bill knows about the average, young, black male...you could put in a thinble. Bill has, himself become a problem and an embarrassment. He needs to stop kicking black folk while they are down. Get involved with young black men who are down and almost out and help them. Bill if you are not a part of the solution, that is you are mainly a naysayer, you're not a PART of the problem. You ARE the problem.

Name: faith273
Comment: I totally understand your point of view, but I also must say that A LOT of our young black people are putting themselves in harm's way and getting caught. A LOT of young black single mothers would rather their children wear clothes that are too big and too expensive than move them out of neighborhoods where gangs, drugs and shootings are the norm. I know that I'm right about it because I see it everyday! Your points are well taken, but what's wrong with someone saying "check yourself before it's too late!" What's wrong with someone saying "what in the heck is going on?" I don't think he's wrong, I think what he's saying is dead right and it needs to be said and more often by more people and then backed up with programs to make an serious change in our community because quite frankly from what I've seen, I'm very concerned about the future generations!

Name: faith273
Comment: As a people we are headed in the wrong direction. Too many of our young people are affiliated with gangs and don't finish high school in 2006! Meanwhile people were fight racism in its ugliest and rawest form and accomplishing amazing things in years past. Someone must say something, it's not all good with the Black community, quite frankly it's very disheartening to see how integration and assimilation have made some of us forget what price had to be paid for the luxuries we relish in now. I remind my children all the time of how hard things were for Black people and how the struggle continues. I remind them that when their Granny was in school she had to walk over a mile one way to school because the schools were segreated and they're fortunate that they get on a school bus and go to school and interact with various races. I remind them of the sacrifices made by those that came before us and that's why we have to be better all the time! So what's wrong with someone on a larger platform doing the same thing? As far as the name calling in your article, I think that's beneath you and childish. Your point was well made sans the name calling. No one is perfect, so please explain to me how bringing up his dirt affects the plight of our people? You're throwing stones and I'm positive that you're not without blemish. The fact of the matter is someone needs to be a realist and address the madness that's getting way out of control. So where's your article on the programs that you're doing to help in your city?

Name: TJthemilitant
Comment: I agree with you Faith..Cos is not a saint and never confessed to be one..He's made mistakes in his life that he proably regrets; that in no way takes away from the compassion he continues to express about the state of his people in the inner city...He, like myself and countless others just want our people to collectively WAKE THE HELL UP!....The name calling was a little excessive Bruh...And THUNNY, you know you just a nut!..LOL

Name: Pamalicious
Comment: >>> faith273: you hit the nail on the head. I totally agree with your comments. I was thinking, going to write it, and I'm so GLAD!!!!!!!! YOU SAID IT!!!!!

Name: kelley8836
Comment: DJ, while I agree with a lot if not most of your comments, I can't co-sign with how you went about making your point. I agree with TJthemillitant and Faith, Cos has never professed to being "perfect" or without error. I do think the name calling that you resorted to diminished your message in a way. I understand your frustration, anger and offense of Cosby's tirade. However I can't roll with that. No matter what you think of Cosby these days, he has sunk millions of dollars into our HBCU's and whether you realize it or not, he has helped countless other AA men and women get solid educations. Yeah, there are times his approach has been over the top when chastising the black community. Yeah, he could be more mindful of where/how he comes out with his commentaries/opinions. No, I don't receive EVERYTHING he is saying, and Yes, unfortunately many things he has said IS TRUE. Yeah, DJ you've also said some valid and true things in your retort, Yeah, there are times your approach is just as over the top as Cosby's (calling him Stupid %*$, just because you disagree or are offended by his comments is just as ignorant as some of the comments he's made about the black community) is over the top. The bottom line is that I would hope we would not resort to a bunch of name calling and generalizing on either end just because we don't like what we see or what is being said. My hope is that there'll be more healthy dialogue around the issues that affect our community. There are plenty of opinions to go around, now let's come up with solutions rather than name calling and generalizing. Thank you.

Name: Kofi
Comment: >Pam,Kelly,TJ, The fact is Cos was and is talking out of his azz. The things he stated about poor black people are plain WRONG!!! His statements are not backed by research and he offers no solutions. This is all in addition to Cos personal issues. What we see in our part of world or on the news often does not reflect reality. Cos is making money throwing stones at black people. DJ like many other people are throwing some back IN DEFENSE OF BLACK PEOPLE!!! Unless you come with some solutions, you are aiding and abetting the people like Cos in our collective demise.

Name: BigRuss
Comment: Right now I don't have a problem with Darryl or Cos. Until Cos opened his mouth and put people on blast there was not a HOT focal point for discussion. By Cos putting his opinion wether you agree or not has brought a much needed dialog into a global light. Darryl, keep fighting because we cannot let the bashing win. However we need to take this opportunity to help our brothers who are not taking advantage of positive opportunities.

Name: BigRuss
Comment: Furthermore, if Cosby is playing hit-man for people who oppose his views that is fukked up and he needs to be put on blast. He cannot put Black men on blast with one hand and on the other shutdown another free man from expressing his views. This makes him not better than a white racists.

Name: queeniebunz
Comment: I think that a lot of what Cosby says is very true. You don't have to drive into SE Washington DC to see how jacked things are. All you have to do is watch the news and you'll see the police tape and the photo of another kid murdered and his baby mama NOT his wife, crying on the news in her designer clothing with her hair weave she bought at a Korean store...things are jacked. I see this everyday on channel 4 at 5pm and it's sad. Just because you don't like the messenger doesn't mean the message is incorrect. Look at the people you know - how many of them have a family member in jail or on drugs or with multiple babies they don't take care of (or all three like my cousin)? How many have a college education? How many have been up on charges? How many "did some things" when they were young they mercifully didn't have to pay for with incarceration? How many live beyond their means to impress other people? If I walked around for an hour in D.C. and talked to black men, I wonder how many would tell me they DON'T have children with multiple women. I would put money on it that most do - even the educated negroes w/"good government jobs". We have to be honest w/ourselves enough to acknowledge that there is A LOT wrong with our community. We have classism issues - bourgie vs. regular vs. ghetto. We have color line issues - light is right. We have a lack of respect for education - more black females getting degrees than black males / less of both going to college now. We worship at the feet of hip hop to a degree that is destroying our community - it's all about a fat crib, a pimped out ride and some bling. We are not united. We denigrate and exploit our own women - see Jill Scott article. We have self-hatred issues - hating characteristics about being black - dark skin/strong features/kinky hair. We have birth control issues which have led to AIDS issues and many children who don't know their fathers. We have work ethic issues - with young people who continually think they will play/sing/rap/sling rock their way out of their neighborhoods instead of getting jobs. These things are all very real and widespread. Just because you don't like Cosby doesn't mean all of this isn't completely true. On the flip side, Cosby is not delivering his message in a way that is conducive to changing things. When you are genuinely trying to help people, you don't talk down to them. Cosby, with his degree in education, should know that psychologically speaking, people always respond better to positive reinforcement. What he needs to do is learn how to say what he is trying to say. There definitely needs to be some re-education in our community. I think that if Obama said the same things people would listen more because he knows how to say things and then there will be detractors of him too that will say he is out of touch, too.

Name: BigRuss
Comment: queeniebunz. What you are witnessing is not a Black problem it is a human problem just manifested in a very concrete way. Greed, classism, misogyny, etc. are human conditions played out by more in the world than the Black man. I would not even say most Black men practice this behavior but those that do put it so far on front street it may seem so. We need to seperate the concerns instead of just lumping the problem into the same heap. Peoiple need to understand the human condition and contrast with the Black condition to see how really to fix the problem without us destroying each otherin the process. Look a maslow hierarchy of needs and understand why people are the way they are.

Name: Gemami
Comment: Two things I have a problem with -- 1. Cosby isn't 100% correct. He like alot of us allow the media to paint this devistating picture of us. But realistically, a lot of working poor are just trying to make ends meet. As for single parenting... it's not fair to believe it's just a poor problem when it transends, race and economics. 2. We give Cosby's past and present indescritions a pass but on the Jill Scott page say someone like Karrine Stephens has no right to speak because of her past and even present. Aren't they both supposively "speaking the truth?"

Name: queeniebunz
Comment: >BigRuss - Personally, as bad as it may sound, I care about my people. I can't worry about what white folk do. I can't worry about what others do. The condition of my people is what I concern myself with so the entire human condition and making that comparison really doesn't interest me.

Name: kelley8836
Comment: Kofi, I 100% disagree with your last post. Not only do I disagree, but you straight up missed my point. Let me say it to you this way, I DO NOT AGREE with Cosby NOR DJ's approach to this issue. Cos out there putting this (you may not want to face it nor like it Kofi, but a lot of what Cos has put out there is TRUE!) I live it and see it every day where I live. For Cos to be putting our stuff on front street without also offering a solution is problematic. Equally so, DJ taking the stance of blasting Cos back and getting really classless by as you say "blasting" Cosby back by calling him Stupid %*$, punk %*$, old bastad, %*$!(@ and whatever else he called him. C'mon now, that's what you call a solution? That’s what I called an ignorant tirade because DJ did not like what Cosby put out there. Right, wrong or indifferent, Cosby and DJ need to check themselves on some level. I actually agree with BOTH men, but how they’re communicating their differences is what they need to take a closer at. Bruh, I would like to think we can collectively have a dialogue about some of the very real issues we face as a people. Blaming, shaming and name calling, which Cos AND DJ have both done. It's not aiding and abetting my brother, it's called exercising good sense and respectably looking at all sides of the issue --coming up with solutions and then moving on those solutions. By the way Kofi, what solutions do you have to this issue to move our community forward?

Name: BigRuss
Comment: queeniebunz. It's not so much worry about what white people do but understanding the same way it has been remedied by them is the same way we would do it. America for instance did not develop to where it is today overnight it has taken roughly 400 years and over 200 since independence. What makes us only 100 or so years out of slavery and without near the resources to think we will mature anytime soon. Screaming for everybody to wake up ain't the answer. Strategy, understanding and common vision are the key. This isn't worrying about white folk but there is a lot to learn from them.

Name: amethyst
Comment: I have some of the concerns that Cosby has, because I see the issues in my own family and environment. However, I am cautious about making generalizations based on the media's propaganda. I appreciated Darryl printing some statistics a few weeks ago. We should be careful about accepting other folks' theories (not facts) about our own people. Rather, we should research the issues for ourselves. I have several problems with Cosby: 1) His method of blaming without offering concrete assistance and solutions. 2)His %*$ertion that "most" Black men are incarcerated and irresponsible. Cosby could take the initiative to show the positive and productive things that many brothers are doing. 3) Telling the Spelman graduates to take charge and ignore our men. This attitude will destroy our families and communities. I do not support brother-sister hate. 4) The classism. I give Cosby props for his support of colleges. However, what about the children who aren't even considering higher education or don't believe they can rise above their current circumstances? Waiting to help college students leaves a lot of others in the cold. This is the elitism that some posters have mentioned. Darryl raises some good points. I appreciate his outrage and am glad he's expressing it, but the profanity and name calling don't add to his message. What is critical is for us to DO something!!! Whether it's mentoring a relative or child in your community, helping someone find a job or resources being a sounding board, or tutoring someone action must be taken. It is disgusting for the "Talented Tenth" to sit on their butts and criticize what others are not doing. If you have "arrived", reach out and help a brother or sister who are trying to make it, too.

Comment: Speak brotha, speak. A lot of people may disagree with you, but there is an old biblical adage that says "a prophet is not known in his own home" Darryl, I hope you don't become discouraged. When it comes to so called "icons" such as preachers, politicians, entertainers, et al., black folk can sho nuff come out of a funky bag. Keep your head up brotha.

Comment: >kelley8836, You should check out a few publications to find out the true state of Black America. I would suggest reading the Kaiser Family Institue, Centers for Disease Control, The FBI's Uniform Crime Report. These are just some of the publications that will give you a better picture of what is happening to black people. The stats Cos cited are WRONG PERIOD!!! What you see in your neighbor or what you heard may not present a true picture. Not to minimize anything black people are in a state of crisis. Cos is simply parroting the lies one hears on Fox News, etc. As far a me and my contributions, I supervise several HIV programs and programs dealing with health disparities among AA. I am not only an advocate but I draft policy to empower black people. I work one on one with AA young men in an agency called Brothers Against Guns. I make my living knowing the state of black people and I can tell you Cos is talking out of his AZZ. IF you like you google my name Andre Robertson Black Coalition on AIDS.

Name: Kofi
Comment: I meant Kaiser Family Foundation. or the Extended Black Family Institue to find out about what is going on with black people and not just pathology.
