Comment: The best op-ed regarding Bush's apperance was written in the Post...I can't remember if it was Eugene Robinson or Jabari Asim, however, they made the point that Bush spoke to the NAACP as if they were a fringe group only concerned with a select few topics. He never touched on Iraq (a disproportionate number of our troops are of color, also, many black men choose the military as a way out of poverty), He never mentions the word poverty even though another 4 million people have fallen into poverty under his administration, he didn't touch on continued economic health and policies he has put in place that many people feel are denegrating the middle class (75% of blacks DO NOT live in poverty and the vast majority would be considered lower middle class or simply middle class). Basically Bush did not speak to the NAACP as tough they were concerned with AMERICAN issues, he spoke as if it is 1968 and the NAACP has a narrowed focus and a stricly homogenous membership.

Comment: Just pathetic all the way around. That this nation of so called informative, intelligent people would allow this foolishness to continue, just proves how weak the majority of Americans are. Weak in body, mind and spirit. We ain't overcoming a damn thang.

Comment: Amen to the writer and the three people who posted...there's nothing more I can say just a helluva lot more to do. But are we the only ones with eyes to see this sh*t? Or has everyone gone the ostrich route and ducked their heads in the sand? I just don't understand...but I do.

Comment: oldsoul, they only show the ostriches on tv ... us that are speaking out don't get the spot light like that but some of the people in attendance were simply polite to Shrub but were not fooled by him

Comment: While I agree w/the author, there are some things that we must realize as well. We should've stopped making such a big deal about him NOT showing up AFTER the 1st time but MOS DEF..after the 2nd invite. For years you've been hearing..."he won't speak at the NAACP convention" I was always like "what is he supposed to come and say?" I have no idea what people expected of the president on this one.. I really don't. Why would he do anything different than what he always has? Dodging questions, never tackling "important" issues, not admitting fault w/anything he's done, never has he had honest debates bout Iraw. He was ALWAYS talked "around" those issues not important to his base. So, w/that as a backdrop, really...what did we REALISTICALLY expect him to do when he finally accepted this invite?

Comment: Yeah pricelss, I feel ya on that. That's one of the most used media tactics - push positive to the back and showcase the fool(ish) and confused. I agree with Herbs, I never cared about him coming or going - why? I guess it was the "right" thing to do - respectful, maybe - but did we reallly expect anything of substance to come from it? Just like do we expect anything of substance to come from the NAACP? Although I respected it as being about "some" action from its inception, we could never depend on an organization to be fully "for" us if it ain't "fully" with us.
