As I watch the show in reruns, I'm like man, they never got a break... James could never keep a job then he gets killed when he finally finds a job, Florida got remarried, that dude died, Thelma's NFL bound husband got hurt...The show sent mixed messages

Comment: Sorry bros, this sister has to chime in too... I liked Thelma cause she represented the beauty that I saw in myself and the girls around my neighborhood. She looked just like us and was sweet and smart and just from around the way. Up until that point there weren't many positive media portrals of AA teen girls who actually looked like real life teens. Given that Bernadette is from NYC now I know why she wore her hair just like we did and the kind of clothes that we did and had a real urban NYC accent! Wish her continued success.

Comment: I know she has to be tactful and all or does she?...but she was old enough to know that J.J. was cooning and that John Amos and Esther Rolle were both disgusted by it. I read an article in Ebony Magazine about them and they both said that they left the show because it became an embarrassment for them. Now that is groundbreaking - for black actors to put their foot down and walk away rather than be part of a coon show. I admire both of them for that. People say everyone has a price but they demonstrate that at least 2 cast members from the show valued themselves very highly and the fact that they didn't end up poor and beat down for their choice confirms that they made the right decision and God blessed them for it...

Comment: I used to dream about Thelma and Willona then wake up and get mad. I thought they wuz SOOOOO fine!!!! Sadly a few years ago, someone killed Bernadette's Dad in Philly? and I saw her crying on TV. Does anyone know the outcome? I went to college with John Amos and he was from East Orange, not Newark. He used to tell us at Colorado State U. that his friend in high school was Dionne Warwick. I thought Esther Rolle was from the Bahamas? Guess, i ain't as smart as I thought I wuz!

Name: queeniebunz
Comment: >for the fellas reminiscing - what I said takes nothing away from the fact that Thelma was/is gorgeous. I'm not hating because I was in awe of her - beautiful, intelligent - what I wanted to be...

Name: B00TANEB00TUS
Comment: I was just a wee lad when Goodtimes aired...I remember my pals and I would rush up to the TV and plant a kiss on Thelma whenever they showed closeups of her....Yeah, admitt it...ya know ya did it too...

Comment: my husband and i had the opportunity to meet bernadette several years ago at a play she was starring in. the play used members of the audience to play assistants to bernadette who played a defense attorney and earnest thomas who played a d.a. because my husband and i got there early because he wanted to have front row seats we were asked if we like to play the parts. initially i didn't but of course my husband jumped at that opportunity and convinced me to join in. we were led backstage to meet with the actors and my husband lit up like a neon sign when he saw bernandette and got a hug, in fact too many touches and hugs from her imo. but i knew he had a crush on her and i was happy for him that he got the opportunity to have this moment with 'thelma'. unfortunately we didn't know the premise of the show when he bought tickets or else i could have captured that moment forever for him on film.

Comment: I meet Bernadette Stanis last week in DC at my frats Centennial Celebration. She was signing copies of her books and I got to take a picture of her. I would post the picture, but I do not want to make some you guys jealous **snicker**. I have to admit she made a killing off of us.

Comment: as for me, imagine yourself coming into puberty with the likes of thelma and Pam (sheba shane) greir....im telling ya all.....im am messed up for life i say to youz......it is not my fault...its just the way things worked out....blame my parents...

Comment: Thelma is my girl. I admired her so much b/c I always wanted to be her when watching Good Times. She was and still is beautiful and represents the true beauty of a black woman. She still is a strong sista doing her thing and just another example of why black don't crack! Gone with ya bad self Thelma!!

Comment: LET'S NOT FORGET THAT GOOD TIMES CAN NOW BE SEEN ON TVONE FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE NOT AWARE.

Name: dakoolestkat
Comment: Anybody remembered when Thelma almost married that african dude Ebay?? Little did he know that his name would become a mega auction website..lol

Name: Calidee
Comment: Does anybody have any information about the actor that played Bookman?

Name: EdnaMae
Comment: Such a positive upbeat woman and story, is this still Eurweb? Such a nice change from all the silly "fueds" and assorted nonsense from these so called young entertainers.

Name: Priceless
Comment: I liked that lil summary of characters ... didn't know Esther was a Spelman graduate until now

Name: Priceless
Comment: Boot, I know y'all are guys and I'm a girl but Wilona was way finer than Thelma to me *shrugging shoulders*

Name: huey
Comment: pricless...we brothers in this forum today cast no disparity on our sisters...we lub em all...willona was fine too...we understand...just happens to be all about thelma today though....much lub willona...we see ya ....

Name: TJthemilitant
Comment: I always thought Bernadette was beautiful!..And to this day John Amos is a very handsome man..I always loved his skin and he has aged very well..Alot of people didn't know that he and JJ were only 5-6 years apart...John actually resented playing father to JJ..It's difficult for me to watch some of those episodes now..I find JJ's character disgusting.

Name: Merd325
Comment: Bernadette was actually 21 years old when Good Times first aired. Jimmy Walker was 26 years old.

Name: oldschoolbrother
Comment: I recently bought a couple of the season series and had the kids watch it, brought back some good memories but in one of the episodes my son asked me were we ever offended by the JJ character and I told him yes we were but the focus for me and my friends was Thelma, I could not lie about that. The information about the main characters was very nice and taught me a few things. Hopefully EURWEB can do the same for many other legendary shows with huge black casts.

Comment: Bernadette Stanis was so pretty back then, and she is still pretty now. I'm glad she's doing well. As for Ralph Carter, he got smart with my mother a few years back at the National Black Arts Festival because she recognized the baliff from "Judge Judy", but didn't recognize him. No further comment on the recognition thing ('cause y'all know why she didn't recognize him), but he better be glad i wasn't there with her. I would've slapped him into the middle of next week for getting smart with my mom.

Name: Gemami
Comment: You guys are funny talking about "Thelma" and "Wilona" like that (LMAO). I wonder what happened to Thelma's husband. However, my all time favorite is John Amos, with his f'd up 'fro (lol). That man doesn't get the recognition he deserves 'cause he's a decent actor. However, my favorite line, "take that b%*$ out your voice, bytch." from Player's Club -- whoo, that's funny.

Name: OSUN
Comment: Does anyone know what happened to teh actor that played Keith? It seems like most of the actors had real talent, particularly impersonations: Keith and Buffalo Butt.

Name: asize12
Comment: Question, why in every episode did James wear those tight a*ss khaki cordoroys & Florida wore orange ANYTHING??? Orange dress, orange shirt, orange pants, just everything was always orange! LOL

Name: dakoolestkat
Comment: LOL@ asize12..yes Florida with those 6 necks in the back of her head did always wore orange..who does that anyway? (God rest her soul)

Name: asize12
Comment: I forgot to mention, I didn't know that Wilona was that young! She's only 61?

Name: Deb70
Comment: I know. Wilona has to be older than 61. If Thelma is 56? No way Wilona is only 5 years older than her. No way.

Name: TommyStrong
Comment: alexander1906>wassup frat? I was there as well...I saw her at the banquet Saturday night...she still looks good!

Name: Rahwaykid1
Comment: That show was indeed grounbreaking. Someone asked about the character named Bookman. Well, I don't know what he's doing professionally, but he's been at my church in LA. No trouble recognizing him. He looks good.

Name: goodnplenty1957
Comment: as Lenny (DAP SUGAR WILLIE) would say..*THELMA, THELMA, THELMA* (nuff said)

Name: PlanetRock
Comment: To paraphrase Chris Tucker in the "Friday" movie: "Ooooh...Ms. Stanis just don't know!!" Thelma is just too fine...then and now. Can I get an "amen" from the bruthas?
