Comment: Hmm...interesting viewpoint. However, although Amy can "identify" with the isolation we Blacks feel as a result of living in a White-dominated society she still has the "luxury" of being able to use her White skin as an advantage anytime she chooses. Whether she does or not is not the point. There are also times when she is given an advantage without her choosing simply because of her White skin and others have made certain decisions in her favor because of her skin color. We, as Blacks, are not afforded the privileges that White skin grants without question. She will just have to deal with not being a part of the Sisterhood!!!!!

Comment: Though I appreciate Amy's capacity for compassion for the struggles of black people I have to with Justmythoughts on this one. Amy may have a cultural understanding that some whites don't and respect some whites don't but she is still a white person and that't not slam its just the truth. She could turn he back(Not she would) and blend back in with the majority culture. Her struggle to help that youg brother is admirable but what JCP seems to miss is that ultimately race in America is about access in America and the people who seemingly have an overabundance of it and the ones who can never seem to get thier hands on it. Along as that imbalance accesibility is prevelent in this socieity good people like Amy will never be perecived as belonging to a group that is still struggling to have a fair chance to succueed(or fail) the American dream.

Comment: SilentJay, well said. I am also so amazed at how White people(Worldwide) have such a myopic view of the far-reaching effects of Racism. Once when I was in South Africa, I had an interesting discussion with some White South Africans who were trying to convince me of the injustices that we being done against them under the new Affirmative Action initiatives in their country. Baby, may head was twisting around like the girl in the Exorcist!!!! By the time I finished blasting them, I felt as if I'd had an out of body experience. I swear I was channelling some of my Ancestors. ;-)

Comment: What many on this board have demonstrated is that race is not a biological construct but a political and social one. When people enter into interracial relationships, they must realize there will be trade-offs. A white person may become estranged from family members. Black people may experience hostility from other black people. The children may be ill equiped to deal with racism from peers. If poor little Amy is feeling a little put out, boo hoo. They may accuse black people of playing the "race card" but, it was they who invented the race game where they often deal us cards from the bottom of the race deck and the rules change as they see fit.

Comment: Good point Kofi, we didn't racism. People in positions of power as result of great wealth and poltical influence created racism as a means of keeping the working class divided and confrontational with one another. I suspect as long as there is an systemic imbalance in the distribution of resources, there will be some kind of racism in America.

Comment: (I meant to say "we didn't invent racism")

Comment: very interesting article, but I agree with the consensus of this board. Amy can turn back and benefit from being white at any given moment...... I can recall having a conversation with a very good friend of mine that was of Jewish descent, about the struggles, cons and ugliness of racism. As much as he tried to identify with me, I served him notice.... you are on the "outside" looking in. See my friend, has a very fair complexion, his mother was Jewish and his dad was white....his last name was Kennedy..and if he didn't tell you, one would not know that he was Jewish..... and to his advantage, if he never mention it no problem....... me I am a dark-skinned black woman, and love every inch of my hue...... no one would mistake me for another race.... as much as I admired and am aware that the struggles of the Jewish people are similar to that of black people...... many, if they don' t you'd never know

Comment: More nonsense from the right wing 1% black faction. Her empathy means nothing, she is blond and white, the world is always going to be hers. A afro wearing sister with better qualifactions will never get a the job if they go for it at the same time. Sorry "conservtive" black folks, racism will always be a part of the fiber of this country, and black people will always be the main victims.

Comment: I find that white women with black men expect our entire race to worship and accept them with open arms much like their black men. They feel disappointment when we don't gush over their mixed children and view them as royalty and a cut above. I speak to a white woman in my building who's with a black man but I don't welcome her as I would a black woman.

Comment: "she is blond and white, the world is always going to be hers....but I don't welcome her as I would a black woman"..... Brothers and sisters....it is 2006....an earlier poster accurately stated RACE is not biological and is social/political. The world does not belong to "white people"....stop being so narrow-minded and understand that discounting ANYONE by the color of their skin makes you as ignorant as any white people. Racism is real...but continuing to perpetuate ignorance will not stop the bulls*it....
