Comment: Is it better that people read SOMETHING or nothing at all? It's not like the women who are reading The Sex Kronikles chose that instead of Richard Wright or James Baldwin. But at least they're in the bookstore or library and maybe eventually will stumble upon Maya or Nikki or Zora and pick up some of our 'classics' or a biography or two.

Comment: Every journey begins with one step, the first step. If people are beginning to read books the next logical step would be to begin to branch out. Some of us are slow so give us some time we'll eventually get there but for the moment, at least they are reading.

Comment: I guess I didn't understand this article because (a) alot of these authors are self-published so this isn't something the white establishment is doing to undermine the intelligence of Blacks; (b) as said people are reading and people are writing so we really can't get mad at that and lastly (c) aren't "urban" writers doing the same thing as Zora Neale Hurston -- writing in the dialect and emotion of the people/culture she writing about?

Comment: I was thinking about this same subject earlier this week. Another reason why people read is for entertainment. I not too crazy about book snobs. It is better that people read something rather than nothing at all. But I think the point that Minister Scott was making is regarding the lack of diversity in literature. Look at the way our music is treated. You would think that negative rap was the only music available. Urban literature sells, which is good, but what about Black authors who don't fit into that genre. When was the last time a black author who wrote a book that didn't fit into the typical black themes had a major publicity campain or had his/her work openly displayed in mainstream bookstores. You really can't depend on the Sunday book section to adequately cover the multiple offerings available from black authors.

Comment: I can appreciate the ministers point but, I don't think it is that serious. I can read the lastest tome by Cornnel West but, I like to read Baby Mama Drama by Carl Weber as well. My point is writers will write what sells. Black folks are a very diverse group. There is something for all of us.

Comment: I agree with most of the posters at least they are reading something. And i am about to sign off and go eat something. I think i will go eat some garbage instead of some healthy food out of my refrigerator. At least i will be eating something. It might make me sick; it might damage my health, but at least i will be eating something.

Comment: The dearth of good black literautre is amazing in this day and age. I got a new book from Amazon today, opened, it and in the first paragraph, the n-word, good grief, do they think that is writing, very uncreative to say the least.

Comment: I guess the point of the article was totally missed. It isn't better that people read SOMETHING rather than NOTHING at all if that something is a load of crap. I agree with the author completely. It's becoming a lot harder to find quality black literature. You have to do some searching for that. Just like good black music is becoming a lost art, good black literature is taking the same road. In life, there should be balance and unfortunately, black culture - from music, to literature, to movies - is completely out of balance. We've allowed ourselves to become a mockery, a laughing stock. We're ok with this? Really?

Comment: Ya know black folks make me sick some damn time. So fuvkin what if some want to read so-called "ghetto books"...it's their damn perrogative. Just as it's the ministers perrogative to get on his high horse as if he's reading some got damn Shakespeare all the damn time -I'll bet he picked up "Ghettorization" from his extensive reading of the "Masters" Negro puh-lease...live and let others live...

Comment: WOW. That's so ignorant, I'm stumped for a response.
