Comment: That wasn't about the lack of a permit. I bet his rhyme was tight too. He is one of the few (new school) hip hop artists worthy of my respect

Comment: I love Mos Def! I'm sure he was arrested for the content of his performance. I wish more of these hip hop artists were just getting arrested for civil disobedience!

Comment: I agree 100% with what was said. Luv, luv, luv Mos Def. I believe it's not only the content but because of his skin tone. I remember a white group did an impromptu concert on top of a building near RCMC impersonating Bono. Stop traffic and the whole nine... but wasn't arrested.

Comment: Kudos to Mos Def. He's a conscious brother, cool rapper and solid actor.
Also, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are turning their attention to the 9th ward of New Orleans. Talk about drawing attention to an issue.

Comment: The end point is that the police told him, from this article, more than once to shut it down and he did not so he got arrested. Just like you or I would. It was probably crazy around that area and they police were trying to keep orderly. What is the big deal here?

Comment: It can't just be because he wasn't following the rules??? it always has to be because of color. People like to put that "twist" on everything.

Comment: I have much respect for what Mos Def did. He still remembers Katrina while the other rappers completely forgot about it. They are too busy F-cking, smoking, drinking, getting high, and talking about nothing while people are still suffering. Keep doing it Mos Def.

Comment: I, too, like the idea of what he did but you REALLY need to get permits. That's the only way to protect yourself from harassment and have any legally legit case. I say this as a person who's worked in gov't regulation. I know it can be time consuming, a cost, etc. but do it to keep yourself safe and to better ensure the safety of, in this case, people who might be listening to you, especially at an event with many people and with an artist of Mos' stature.

Comment: I agree mos def, and for me common are the shat, and I will add that it may have something to do with the song though I have never heard the contents. Maybe the police did not want anything incited outside an already busy venue. he should have moved on when they told him though.

Comment: bigfriend> If you work near that area, then you would know it was a madhouse from the early am. Too many artist in one place -- in & out all day. So NO, post 9/11 you definitely can NOT just roll up on a flat bed and start performing. Mos is a native NYer; if he really wanted to call attention to Katrina than walk the darn carpet and speak your mind. Get your friends together and do a benefit. He certainly knows enough people in music and film entertainment to do this, but you'd rather get arrested at a white award show? I like Mos Def however I work across the street from Radio City Music Hall and this sounds like a publicity stunt to me.

Comment: Are you honoring Katrina victims by getting arrested or would/could you honor them by doing something that MATTERS. Mos is from the BK, what has he has done on a charitable level for his own hood? (yes I know about the book store, but that was not in Bed Stuy)..and DCGG you're right, I didn't even want to go there but from what I understand brotha still hasn't gotten a handle on his personal business.

Comment: Bigfriend, have you ever posted about the anti-semitic twist Jews are always crying at the drop of a hat? It is unfunny funny how people always say Blacks play the race card all the time but i never hear anyone say the Jews play the race card all the time.

Comment: whatdat - PREACH! Black folks still keep alive, “the crab in the barrel,” mentality. We NEVER totally support one another. We always have to put down and complain about each other.
Mos Def made a point by getting arrested. He is trying to bring attention back; to the folks who have lost their homes, and whom the insurance companies have played. Let's not forget all of those poor people drowning and dying in New Orleans. We have to learn from this brazen and arrogant administration. They have made it clear, if you get in the way of the powerful and rich from being more powerful and rich, they will KILL YOU!

Comment: Can anyone say, "Publicity Stunt"? I heard Mos Def had an album coming out soon. It's probably too late for this album, but who wants to guess how many of his future songs will be mentioning this incident? This is the best thing that could happen for a "politically concious" rapper like Mos Def. He's lucky they didn't keep him in jail for all that child support that I heard he owed. (Maybe he finally paid up). Don't get me wrong, I think he is a great artist, and I will probably buy his new album. Hopefully, this exposure will help him sell more.

Comment: To all those with negative remarks regarding mos def I respect your opinions but if you knew mos def you would know that he has always remained true to his roots and not sold out to alot of the record companies he has always been very concious regarding things of this matter. I do believe many have forgotten about Katrina I watched a little bit of MTV awards and let me just add that it was garbage and I didnt here anything about it I can name one person trying to capitalize on it his name is MASTER P he did not give a darn about New Orleans or his brother C-Murder and that is coming out of his own mouth. So what Mos Def did was try to bring light back to the situation so i applaud him.
