Comment: I'm sorry, but I just don't see what the big deal is. So, the Blacks will be seperated from the Asians & whites and Hispanics. Boo-hoo, po' li'l US. C'mon, y'all, as long as the rules are fair across the board, what difference does it make? I guess I'm starting to think like Farrakahn's (sp?) people...we've been brainwashed into thinking that we are NOTHING without whites. That we are doomed if we are ever put in a situation (school, community, whatever) where there's just us and no whites.

Comment: This is why I am not a member of the NAACP. Why can't they be more concern with the crumbling schools and community in urban area, plight of young black men going to jail, job discrimination against ex-cons, AIDS crisis in America and so forth. These are some real issues. I wouldn't care what they do on the Survivor show b/c it is fixed anyhows. Concentrate on the Survivors who are going through hell with all the real issues I have listed!!!

Comment: Khufu: What you state is historically correct but when I lived in the NYC/JERSEY area, I would see white folks and know IMMEDIATELY that they were Jewish. I could look at the nose, shape of the head, texture of hair, build and etc. and know for a fact that they were Jewish. If I saw a couple with these features and the woman was doing ALL the talking then I knew she was Jewish. This may be an evil stereotype but their women DOMINATE conversations a la Barbara Walters and luv to run the show. Poor Jewish men holding their ears to avoid this onslaught!!! LOL!!!

I live in a city where they dominate in membership and the only time when they come out and shine is when Blacks are being attacked by a racist or bigot incident. The Survivor show is one of them. NAACP is not how they used to be back in the Civil Rights Era. They only come out when they can get the spotlight. That is just my opinion.

Comment: FANTEEKING what you identify as "Jewish" trait is actually based on where they are from...for instance, let's say a Spainsi jew from Spain..their big nose could be from the Moors...or a Syrain Jew with certain physical traits may be traceable to thier gread grandfather who was of colour.....if you go to Israel you'd see more Jews who have pigmentation (Cochin, Sephardic,Bene,etc) than Ashkenazi (Eastern and Western European)...

Comment: The NAACP needs to find more important things to concern itself with like health disparities, economic empowerment, the high rate of black-on-black crime. If they want to become relevant again, they need to get on the ball. This is an obvious distraction from more important work that needs to be done.
Who care about Survivor? I've never watched it and have no plans to do so.

Comment: Khufu: 30 years ago, I used to go to 125th in Harlem to hear Charles 37X Kenyatta speak from the soap box on 125th & ACP Blvd. On other corner down from Apollo Theatre would be the Hebrew Israelites. They had giant billboard with their listing of 12 tribes of Judah. A few years later, in Accra, Ghana I met Hebrew Israelites from Chicago who were enroute to Israel to live in some place called Desdemona. They were led by former Chicago bus driver. Are these the REAL Jews? I appreciate your scholarship. I wonder how they fared during the Lebanese war? I think Whitney Houston visited them recently?

Beth Shalom B'nai Zaken Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation (Beth Shalom) is the oldest Temple in the Chicago area
serving the Israelite Community. It was established as the Ethiopian Hebrew Association in 1915, by Rabbi Horace Hasan. In 1918, Rabbi David Lasarus and Rabbi Caino
Stirson, came to the Chicago area from New York and later joined forces with Rabbi Hasan. In 1923 our beloved Senior Rabbi Abihu Ben Reuben, (may G-D bless his memory) joined this congregation, which was located at 1850 West Lake Street. In the 1930s and 1940s, the leadership of the Ethiopian Hebrew community was firmly in the hands of Rabbi Abihu Ben Reuben, Rabbi Lazarus, and Rabbi Louis Green. Rabbis Reuben and Lazarus studied with Chief Rabbi Wentworth A. Matthew, at the Commandment Keepers Congregation in New York City, and were ordained rabbis by Chief Rabbi Matthew. Rabbi Louis Green received his Masters of Science in Jewish Studies from the College of Jewish Studies in Chicago, Illinois.
In 1952, Chief Rabbi Wentworth A Matthew came to Chicago to oversee the opening of a new Temple to serve the Ethiopian Hebrew Community. In 1984, the Congregation of Ethiopian
Hebrews and Beth Shalom Hebrew Congregation merged to form Beth Shalom Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation. Rabbis Abihu Ben Reuben and Capers C. Funnye, Jr., served the
congregation as senior and assistant rabbis. In 1993, Beth Shalom merged with the Congregation of B'nai Zaken, to form Beth Shalom B'nai Zaken Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation,
with Rabbi Capers C. Funnye, Jr. as Rabbi.
Beth Shalom is an affiliate congregation of the International Israelite Board of Rabbis Inc. and
fully embraces the ideals of Resolution 80lA which was passed by the Board in 1981. It
affirms the brotherhood of all people who worship the G-D of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob without regard to tradition or terminology (for example: Black Jews' Hebrews, Israelites,
Jews, etc.) However, when among us, visitors are obliged to respect the customs and traditions followed by members.

Comment: The NAACP need to sit down somewhere. I will most definitely watch this show and not just because of them separating the races. I have been a survivor fan since day 1 so I think this will make for interesting tv. Question: If you all were in a room filled with people of all ethnic backgrounds, who would you most likely gravitate to? Probably someone of your own ethnic background so what is the big deal with Survivor doing what most of them probably would have done on the island anyway? NOTHING!

Comment: Special K..Survivor aside, I am all for a social experiment based on race. However, I feel it's important to treat it delicately and responsively. I question whether a reality tv contest is the proper venue to do that. But, because our society courts controversy and thrives off of entertainment, I expect millions to tune in. It is what it is

Comment: As far as the NAACP..I would hope that it and any other organization designed as such, would carefully scrutinize ANY and EVERY social experiment based on race..especially that of a reality tv contest. They are reserving their judgment until after they view it. If (although I'm sure it probably won't) blacks are stereotypically portrayed on this show, the question many of you will have then is, "what does the NAACP have to say about this" I think last year the hollywood chapter of the NAACP spoke out against the lack of minority representation and television and "whatdoyaknow" people complained about that too. How bout it...

"Our rationale for dividing Survivor tribes by ethnicity was based upon our belief that racial differences were highly unlikely to matter when the modern world was removed.
Survivor takes place on an island where economics, ethnicity and social class count for nothing. What is important is your ability to build a fire and catch fish. On an island, the value system by which we judge others and even choose to associate or align with others is totally different from choices that may be made in the modern world. Add to this, the political nature of Survivor and the questions are “Do I like this person?” and “Can I convince this person to vote for me?”
Survivor is probably one of the greatest leadership and management tests you can witness. It’s almost like firing someone who works as your subordinate, then the next day, asking them to lobby “your boss” to give “you” a promotion. Survivor is the equivalent of this where the very people you play a part in getting rid of, are asked to turn around and reward you for it.
I believe that most people are inherently good and very few people are intentionally bigoted. It’s all about whether you actually get to know people and getting to know them in a totally fresh environment such as on a desert island further reduces any potential for bigotry.
Were we correct?? Time will tell. All I can say is that the series will pull no punches and will at the very least show that it’s impossible to stereotype people once you meet them and (even vicariously) live with them as they struggle to build a world together while still looking out for themselves.
I agree with the NAACP in that there is no escaping the reality that race is a complex and emotional issue in America-one we are still reluctant to confront and address and I am happy that they have reserved judgment until they watch the series. I would encourage anyone to follow this lead and watch at least a few episodes to get a clear picture of how the dynamic will play out."

Comment: The decision for the NAACP to take a wait and see approach probably has a lot to do with the fact that the president of NAACP is also on the board of CBS. Im not surprised at white folks behavior but, the NAACP response says a great deal about the organization. Several large companies have pulled their ads from survivor. The best the NAACP can do is take a "wait and see" approach. This is a classic case of YT throwing pizz on us and trying to tell us it's rain. Most of us know bullshyt when we see it. This show and the NAACP's response is clearly bullshyt!!!

Comment: Kofi..the same companies that you are referring to are refusing to admit that they have backed out because of the controversy. Of course, considering the timing, I believe it whether they say it or not. The NAACP is not a "backer" of this show. So, there is no financial component nor incentive for them. They said that they would "watch" it. Had they called for a boycott, peoples response more than likely would've been the same.

The NAACP could take the stance that segration by race is reminicent (sp) of a very painful period (Jim Crow) in American history. Comment: Kofi..I hear what you're saying. But, how do u appease everyone? I don't neccessarily agree w/every stance the NAACP has taken. At the same time, I do give them leverage. BUT, many of us do not. You choose to criticize them for reserving judgment. I don't think it's a bad idea. Even if our views were reversed and I adopted your view, I wouldn't use that criticism as a gauge of how "ineffective and full of shyt" the organization is. Understand, that is the difference between me and a lot...a lot of people. I sometimes don't agree w/Al Sharpton or Dyson. But, when they're on..they're on. In the case of the NAACP, in most of our minds..they are NEVER "on" because they're either addressing things which are insignificant to us, absent from things in which they should be a part of OR not given credit for any positive things they've done. So, they are given no leg room--at all. It's a catch 44.

Comment: Come on herbs, How much effort is it to issue a brief statement voicing your objections to the programing? Given the history of TV and reality shows, this will do nothing but further reinforce stereotypes. Ironically, its usually white people who will resign in protest putting their livelyhoods and careers on the line for principle. (there have been plenty of folks who have resigned from the Bush administration in protest) Im not even asking the president Bob Gordon to give up his seat on the CBS board in protest, they just need to speak up!!!
