Cook County Board President Bobbie Steele asked the county's patronage chief Gerald Nichols to clean out his office just outside her own Friday because she could not figure out exactly what his official job was.
The Sun-Times on Monday reported county officials saying that for years Nichols called them to plug politically connected people both for policy positions -- which is allowed -- and also for lower-level jobs, which by court order are supposed to go to job applicants who score well on tests.
"I had a meeting with him Friday and removed him from his position," Steele said. "He explained to me that his role when he worked for President [John] Stroger was to sort his mail, prioritize invitations and to sometimes serve as a surrogate for the president. Well, I don't need him to do that."
Steele took over Aug. 8 as board president after Stroger's stroke.
"I asked him is there a job description someplace that I can look at the other things that he did for the president, and we were unable to verify a real job description," Steele said.
So Nichols has been kicked upstairs for the time being to work for the bureau of administration -- "until we could make a final decision as to where he should go if he should stay in his job at all," Steele said. He will continue to draw his $114,000-a-year paycheck from the county highway department where he has not worked for nearly 20 years.
Steele said her dispatching of Nichols on Friday was unrelated to a call she took the night before from the Sun-Times seeking her comment on a story about whistleblower county supervisor Eric Petraitis. Petraitis claims Nichols called him and told him to recommend a man active in Stroger's 8th Ward organization for a job for which the man was unqualified.

SALEM, N.H. -- A Maine couple accused of tying up their 19-year-old daughter, throwing her in their car and driving her out of state to get an abortion were upset because the baby's father is black, a Maine sheriff said Tuesday.
Katelyn Kampf, who is white, told Cumberland County Sheriff Mark Dion that her mother 'was pretty irate at the fact that the child's father was black, and she had made a number of disparaging remarks about that,' he said.
Katelyn Kampf escaped Friday at a Salem shopping center and called police, who arrested her parents, Nicholas Kampf, 54, and Lola, 53, both real estate developers from North Yarmouth, Maine.
The Kampfs were apparently taking their daughter to New York to try to force her to get an abortion there, police said.
The parents were arraigned Monday on kidnapping charges. If convicted of kidnapping, the Kampfs face 71/2 to 15 years in prison.
Defense attorney Mark Sisti said Tuesday that a sworn statement by Salem police who interviewed both Katelyn Kampf and her parents said nothing about the father's race.
'This whole race-card thing is ridiculous and objectionable,' said Sisti. 'There wasn't any mention in the sworn affidavit to the court about race being a factor in any way, shape or form.'
The boyfriend, 22-year-old Reme Johnson, last week began serving a 6-month sentence for theft at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn, Maine. He is also a self-styled hip-hop artist who has gone by the name Young Merk.

Genius has its rewards. Just ask Jennifer Richeson.
The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation awarded Richeson a $500,000 "genius grant" Monday. The coveted grant comes in recognition of her work in the psychology of racial bias.
"It's not quite real. I'm totally in the land of the surreal," said Richeson, an associate professor of psychology at Northwestern University.
Richeson's work is firmly grounded in reality. With techniques including surveys and MRI brain imaging, she studies interactions between races, shattering traditional views of how people think and feel about race.
Each year, the foundation selects 20 to 25 "really creative individuals" in fields from science to music, said Daniel Socolow, director of the MacArthur Fellows Program. Past recipients include author Susan Sontag, geneticist Eric Lander, civil rights lawyer Marian Wright Edelman and filmmaker John Sayles.
Though the amounts have changed over time, grantees now receive $500,000 over a five-year period, coming in $25,000 payments four times a year. The money is taxable, Socolow said.
What makes the grants unusual is that recipients do not have to do anything for the money. They do not have to finish specific projects, report how they spend the funds, or explain what they worked on during the five years. The purpose is to give talented people "the gift of time and an unfettered opportunity to reflect, explore and create," MacArthur president Jonathan Fanton said.
Richeson will "spend a little bit of time thinking" about the issue that has captivated her since her college days: The complexity of racial feelings.
"This stuff isn't straightforward. . . . It isn't just a question of who and who is not a bigot," she said.
For example, Richeson's work has shown that well-meaning whites work to repress bigoted feelings when dealing with people of other races. Brain scans show "heightened activity in areas of the brain associated with regulating our thoughts and emotions," she said.
That effort leads to "awkwardness" and "exhaustion" in social interactions, she said, and could lead to depleted ability to perform other tasks.
Richeson grew up in Baltimore and attended public schools. She became interested in race relations while in college at Brown University, which was "a sea of whiteness" filled with wealthy kids, she said.
After getting a doctorate at Harvard University, Richeson taught at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., before coming to Northwestern last year.
As for the money, Richeson has no plans to take a sabbatical from Northwestern, she said. She said she will devote her efforts to "the mission of improving intergroup interaction."
"I want to do something purposeful with it. I'm not going to go buy a Porsche," she said.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Bonnie Bleskachek knows what discrimination feels like.
After she joined the Minneapolis Fire Department years ago, male firefighters would leave the room whenever she walked in, a union official hurled an anti-gay slur at her because she is a lesbian, and a male comrade hit her in the head with a soda can, according to her lawyer.
Bleskachek endured, becoming Minneapolis' first female fire chief and the only openly gay fire chief of a major U.S. city.
But now, two years after ascending to the top job, Bleskachek is the one who stands accused of harassing women.
The 43-year-old chief is on leave as the city conducts an internal investigation amid lawsuits from three female firefighters who allege various acts of discrimination and sexual harassment. Also, a city investigation found evidence that the department gave preferential treatment to lesbians or those who socialize with them.
'It's really kind of unfortunate because of her position and her minority status,' said Theresa Glomb, a professor of human resources and industrial relations at the University of Minnesota. 'I imagine, even if found to be false, it could be very difficult for her to regain the respect that her achievement deserves.'

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend,
Mr. Common Sense.
Mr. Sense had been with us for many years.
No one knows for sure how old
he was since his birth records were long ago
lost in bureaucratic red tape.
He will be remembered as having cultivated
such value lessons as knowing
when to come in out of the rain,
why the early bird gets the worm and
that life isn't always fair.
Common Sense lived by simple,
sound financial policies
(don't spend more than you earn)
and reliable Parenting strategies
(adults, not kids, are in charge).
His health began to rapidly deteriorate
when well intentioned but
overbearing regulations were set in place.
Reports of a six-year-old
boy charged with sexual harassment
for kissing a classmate;
teens suspended from school for using
mouthwash after lunch;
and a teacher fired for reprimanding an
unruly student,
only worsened his condition.
Mr. Sense declined even further when
schools were required to get parental consent
to administer aspirin to a student;
but, could not inform the parents when a student
became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Finally, Common Sense lost the will to live
as the Ten Commandments became contraband;
churches became businesses;
and criminals received better treatment
than their victims.
Common Sense finally gave up the ghost
after a woman failed to realize that a
steaming cup of coffee was hot,
she spilled a bit in her lap,
and was awarded a huge financial settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion;
his daughter, Responsibility;
and his son, Reason.
He is survived by two stepbrothers;
My Rights and Ima Whiner.
Not many attended his funeral because
so few realized he was gone.

People just think of themselves as if they're in a cocoon and no one else matters. Whatever we can do to help others, we should do. Sometimes people just pass up donations or service be cause they feel it takes a lot of effort. Dollars add up, so if it's a dollar you have, give it. CULVER CITY, CA—Despite owning 15 units in the central Los Angeles area, landlord Marceline Brown can only count on receiving on-time rent payments from one of her tenants: full-time crack dealer Nathan "Buck" Cruz, 24.
According to Brown, Cruz has never missed a rent deadline since moving into 1211 Juniette Street, Apartment 2D in October 2004, despite having no bank account, credit cards, or personal checks.
Crus and Brown have a tenant–landlord "match made in heaven."
"I couldn't ask for a better tenant," said Brown, 52, who praised Cruz for personally delivering his $950 monthly rent in cash. "He's dependable, quiet, and hardly ever has any complaints or repair issues. He's a property owner's dream."
Brown said that Cruz was a stellar example of how a person of limited means in a low-income neighborhood can live responsibly, quietly, and with dignity. Along with what she called a "refreshing" example of personal and financial responsibility from such a young man, Brown said she was amazed at Cruz' efforts to keep the apartment in excellent condition. Besides installing a brand-new, fully reinforced door at his own expense, neighbors have reported hearing Cruz vacuuming his apartment regularly, and occasionally detect a faint odor of cleaning solvents.
"I got a peek at his bedroom the other day, and it's so spotless, you'd think he never slept in it," Brown said.

Brown told reporters that Cruz is so conscientious that he carries his trash bags nearly six blocks to another Dumpster. "He is considerate and clean, good traits to have," Brown said. "Not like those UCLA kids in 1B with their mountains of pizza boxes attracting flies and roaches. Lord only knows what they're up to in there."

Comment: Though Cruz' lease is scheduled to expire this October, Brown said she has every hope that her favorite tenant will sign on for another year, and has even tried to persuade Cruz by offering to renovate the apartment without increasing his rent. Cruz agreed to renew his lease, but according to Brown, insisted that "everything is fine" and that he would prefer that no one "%*$! with [his] %*$!."
"I told him, 'Okay, whatever you want. I just want you to be happy,'" Brown said.
Unlike Brown's "troublemaking" tenants who play loud music, clog up sinks, and keep other neighbors up with uncontrollably crying infants, Cruz keeps mostly to himself. He contacted the landlord only once when, due to nearby construction, the cooking gas was disconnected for 20 minutes.
"It seems like the other tenants are always coming to me about broken doorknobs or leaky faucets," said Brown, who has long suspected that it's her tenants who are to blame for most problems, not malfunctioning equipment or normal wear and tear. "Nathan almost never bugs me, but he's very easy to get ahold of when I need to talk to him—beeper, a couple of cell-phone numbers, one of those Blackberries. He's very responsive."
After repeated visits from LAPD officers when a few tenant-run weekend house parties got out of hand in July, Brown said she had newfound appreciation for Cruz, who showed an "extraordinary amount of concern" over the incident.
"He's a responsible citizen who clearly wants no part of that kind of trouble," Brown said.
Brown also singled out Cruz for respecting her preference that tenants not have guests in their apartments for extended stays.
"When he is home, he has a lot of visitors, but they never stick around very long or even come inside the apartment," Brown said. "He always greets them at the door, talks to them for a few minutes, and then says goodbye. That's just so considerate to his neighbors."
Hoping to attract other similarly dependable tenants, Brown asked Cruz if he had any trustworthy friends, coworkers, or "anyone from his church" who would be interested in renting an apartment. Cruz has so far not responded.
Brown said she was disappointed, but understood.
"I guess somebody as disciplined and hard-working as Nathan doesn't have a lot of spare time for social activities," Brown said. "Some people, they just have different priorities."

After a brief stay in the Middle East following his self-imposed exile from the United States after being acquitted on sex charges, Michael Jackson has reportedly fell in love with Ireland and is possibly planning to buy a castle. He also wants to open a leprechaun-inspired theme park.
Michael is deadly serious about this idea," a source told Ireland's Daily Mirror. "He loves the whole idea of leprechauns and the magic and myths of Ireland. It would cost around 500 million Euros [about $635 million] to do. He's always wanted to open his own theme park and he thinks Ireland is the perfect place and it will all be built around the leprechaun theme."
This sounds like a perfect idea for Michael Jackson and little kids. Not so much for the leprechauns. You see, in real life "leprechauns" are dwarfs in costumes. Dwarfs are small, like little kids. So, basically, Michael Jackson wants to create a place where he's surrounded by "kids" who are on the payroll. "Kids" who can drink legally. Not good. Maybe the IRA will put a car bomb in his hyperbaric chamber before this gets out of hand, because the "Molest me, I'm Irish!" t-shirts are sure to go fast.

Comment: StormyMonday--I am on the Fat Smash Diet also. I've been on it since 9/11 and have lost 7.7 lbs. so far. I am not an Oatmeal eater, but I've been eating the Oatmeal.....just not every day--every other day. And as far as the yogurt goes.........I have never been a yogurt eater either--but I've been eating the yogurt as well, and now I like yogurt....only I like the whipped yogurt. I'll do a regular yogurt and a whipped one in a day. I don't know about any substitutions for the diet, but I am finding that it works. I also won the Biggest Loser pot here at my job for the week $$$. Keep at the diet, because it does work.

She was so excited about it and didn't care how old she was cause she was finally doing what she always wanted to learn how to do. RyTay27> how about a cute purse? When my daughter turned 12 I got her a cute little Dooney & Bourke purse. My husband thought I was nuts but she loves it and is quite proud of herself. MdHornet> I love Grey's but last night was a little too much. I agree that scene with Bailey and the grieving husband was tooooooo much. Overall though I love that show. I watched that Six Degree show but there was just too much going on for me, I'll try again next week but I don't want to be confused when I watch a show. It's just how immigrants think I guess. Many of the ones on the show, I think, are either second or third generation Americans or were born in their respective countries. The black folk are city kids born and raised right here in the US. Correct me if I'm wrong. I remember thinking it odd when I first found out that a lot of black folk in England, though they may have been born and raised there, identify very strongly with their parents' ancestry. Many of them I met identified themselves as Trinidadian, Jamaican, Guyanese. My response was "but you were born here, you're English." It was odd to me, but I came to understand it. It's so different here. That's one of the legacies of slavery I guess. Even now though in an age when a lot of young people know where their parents are from, I find that most American-born blacks rarely identify themselves by country even if their parents are immigrants. They just think of themselves as American. Not Jamaican-American etc. Anyways, all this talk has made me hungry. I'd love some goat curry right now, but no West Indian restaurants near where I work so a salad it is.

For years, black comedians have been more popular with white audiences than vice versa. With a new comedy show, White Boyz in the Hood, Showtime and Lionsgate Entertainment hope to turn the tables around.
Yesterday, Showtime’s President of Entertainment, Robert Greenblatt, announced that the network, Lionsgate and Madman Entertainment have teamed up to present White Boyz In The Hood, a ten-episode series that will debut October 5 (11 p.m. ET/PT). White Boyz In The Hood will feature 30 white comedians who made their bones performing for black audiences. Radio personality Talent will host the show.
According to Anthony Maddox, Madman’s founder and president, White Boyz In The Hood will break down racial barriers by showing black audiences’ willingness to accept white performers.
