Comment: A buddy turned me on to Gary Taylor back in the 90's and I've been a fan ever since. Unfortunately, as we have discussed many times, there is a wide variety of Black music that if you wait to hear it on the radio, you'll miss it. Either it doesn't appeal to the 12-21 demographic, or fit neatly into one of the programming niches or the right hands aren't being greased as far as the people who make the programming decisions. It's sad.

Comment: jazzfan-I COMPLETELY agree! I've been listening to Gary since the '90s as well. I was turned on to him on the radio in D.C. (LAAAAAAAAATE night Quiet Storm). IN LOVE WITH HIS MUSIC EVER SINCE!! I alwayy tell people about him and ALWAYS, ALWAYS buy another copy of his CDs for my mother (who happens to be a major "voice" in our community as well as a piano player). I don't know we do this. It's unfortunate because we are FORCED in grade and secondary schools (in order to become more "well rounded") to learn about music that our caucasian brothers and sisters have written and how they have influenced America. When it comes to our own (AND when we were given the freedom of choice), we don't come back. It's really odd that we don't educate EACH OTHER anymore about lyrics in songs or play music that might not be "the latest thing out because it's the most popular," but because the lyrics AND the artist BOTH has it's roots in the true history of music while making sense. Gary, you will ALWAYS be able to count on me to support you and will do whatever I can to get the word out about you. Whatever happens, do NOT take the route that Phyllis took. It isn't worth it and we STILL miss (and wish we could see and her) her with Jean Carne--that was ALWAYS the ticket of the year in D.C. Take care and keep your head up. One day, it'll all turn around.

Comment: I've been listening to Gary Taylor since "Take Control" -- but I also realize that terrestrial radio (free radio) is dead, for ALL music. Radio is controlled by major conglomerates and advertisers. The songs played more or less have to do with who they want to listen to reach the advertisers. When radio started giving away money during the all important sweeps period -- we all should have seen the writing on the wall. Who ever thought we'd be playing to hear diverse music (satellite and/or internet)? But we are and it's not just an urban thing.

Comment: sybo32: I too like you (DC) got hooked on Gary Taylor back in the 90's also. I have ALWAYS loved his voice and wondered whatever happened to him.
You are sooooooo right about that quiet storm. I've been listening to that for years and still do it every Sunday starting at 7:00. That Kevin James is something else.

Comment: I too was introduced to Gary's incredible music back in the early 90s. I attended his concert in my area and he use to be in heavy rotation on a very popular, local L.A. jazz station. I really do not get music anymore and since it caters exclusively to a certain demographic, people like Gary are pushed out of the loop. It sure would be nice to see him perform locally again...........
