Comment: A step in the right direction. This paragraph is so true: “We have a generation who have been desensitized to – or never were taught – the real origins and impact of such a hateful term. But whether it ends in ‘-er or –ah’ or –a,’ the word – and the pain – is still the same.”

Comment: This is a double-edge sword because while Ebony & Jet will not print the "N" word (who knew they were anyway?), I guarantee both magazines will still put on their covers today's artists who use the "N" word constantly. A ban should be a TOTAL ban. As James Brown said "talking loud and saying nothing."

Comment: >PlanetRock: Surely they'll continue to feature idiots like Damon Wayans who refuses to discard the term! Many of the rappers receive "ghetto brownie points" by beating up an associate, punching a pregnant girl friend, shooting & killing a disgruntled employee etc. They'll defy the older generation to maintain credibility and thug-a-bility. Case in point. 'member how Tupac was the pride & joy of thugum when he constantly referred to Mrs. C. Delores Tucker, as bytches & hoes? This gained him neighborhood notoriety!!!! This will be a catapult to fame and more CD sales.

Comment: It just shows the mentality of the people who actually listen to the music and can be influenced enough to allow it to become notorious. That generation needs to quit playin' and raise their consciousnous level!

Comment: This is off-topic but, Ebony and Jet really need to update the look of their magazines. The last time I saw a copy of one of the mags, it looked like the same dull format from the 70's. They REALLY need to step up their game as far as the look is concered. Step away from the 70's and bring it into the millenium. At least the look of Essence has grown with the times and remained relevant and fresh. This of course, is my humble opinion.

Comment: I agree this is definitely a step in the right direction. But the publications have to stop propping up artists who use the word in their work -- without doing both it won't be effective. Find artists who are true to the positive culture of Black people and lose the ones who are easily manipulated by money and the White entertainment owners and executives who thrive on seeing Blacks denigrate themselves.

Comment: Ebony and Jet just like bet cater to a generation that slangs the word around like it's brand new and you all actually think they will even consider not highlighting or reporting on the latest rapper or the latest rap/hip hop cd? they've all gotten too used to playing the music and writing the articles and simply bleeping the words. Nothing more will be forthcoming.

Comment: I've been an Ebony subscriber for numerous years and I can't remember one time reading the "N" word. I don't discount their claim of using the word but I don't believe that it's usage was frequent. There may have been a quote here and there. What would really amaze me would be if magazines like Vibe and other urban magazines would come forward and denounce the word.

Comment: Why would a highly respected black publication such as ebony & jet that's been around all these years use the n-word in the first place if it brings on “centuries of pain, evil and contempt.” Its kinda of funny to me they would speak out against the word now and admit to using it in the past, I never knew that, and did they use it in the same manner the way these jug heads do?

Comment: About the "N" word, if the magazines were using the words as a part of interviews where they were quoting someone, how can they justify deleting the word? There would be no "truth" in the article if they expect to have a verbatum transcription of a conversation and then delete certain works. Believe me, I am an advocate of abolishing the word as well but, it doesn't seem like it will work from a journalistic point of view.

Comment: It sure took them long enough to figure this one out. I have never understood as to why its a word of "endearment" among black people, and now that its been put in the spotlight with Micahel Richards, the vileness of it has just come to light. Give me a break, its a vile word, always has been and always will be, no matter who is spewing it.

Comment: Honestly, I don't see the hoopla about the word. IMO, it is a word that's used in conversation, whether on the porch in Ida B. Wells (where I grew up) or down in the South while some dude's on his pick-up with a shotgun--It's a part of reality. To ban the writing/the use of it does not do anything but make it a word with more power to %*$ault, IMO. As a writer, I'm gonna continue to use it because it is a part of speech and to ban it from my own writing would give off a false "vibe" (probably a better word for what I mean, but...). Mind you, I'm only using %*$!(, and not %*$!(@ in what I write or have written (at least I haven't yet). Of course, to be sensitive, I will attempt to make a conscious effort to not go all-out with it...unless, of course, it's necessary to what I want to get out of it.

Comment: No kidding Planet Rock, I was so thru with them. This morning CNN had it as a leading story but now they've moved it so you'll have to type in James Brown under search to read it. Eastwood, they ought to be so embarrassed. And for all the world to see how "bad" this looks for us as black people to do this to the legendary James Brown of all people!

Comment: Ididn't know that Ebony or Jet ever used the N- word. Ebony used to be a wonderful magazine that promoted the best in African-Americans and showed that there is life beyond sports and music. I felt they "dumbed down" Ebony to suit the masses. Two things I don't like: Ebony "saluting" Black couples by featuring unarried couples with kids- as if you can't find any married ones (yes, I know that's hard). Featuring married couples on the cover who have been separated forever. Btw- whenever the Los Angeles Times salutes fathers on Father's Day, they can ONLY find a Black men with his mixed race child- and the father is always so proud. I've seen this year after year after year...there is clearly a deeper message here.

Comment: Since they really don't print the word in any of their articles I think this just tells you where they are coming from for real. They really take a stand and not using it in the first place but actually authoring an article to say they won't use it - talk about whizzing in the wind.

Comment: Personally, I think both magazines are lacking in real substance. Same thing different month!....The Jet beauty is REAL STOOPID thank goodness they stopped posting the sistahs' measurements! Sheesh! If you add Essence into the mix, all of them are typically star struck or focusing on something dumb like men who wear leopard skin and the women who love them and wrote about it! What tha?!?!?

Comment: It is not about the word....it's where it comes from. i am in and was raised in the south....houston, texas ( home of the texans good ole boy football... passin up vince...need i say more?) some girls at work approached me about this and their 'freedom of speech' i said while you can exercise your mouth and your 'freedom of speech', do know that someone could quite possibly be exercising their fist to your mouth....so speak away! black folks need to get a grip and embrace that 'inner' nicca as joe clair said....i know how to fake and shake at work....actually I am one of the 'fakest' there.....as soon as i leave work...i morph, baby....into my own comfortable skin.....i must be able to cut loose on my time and if that includes a few niccas thrown here and there? it is my 'perogs'....there is a time and place for everything....and ebony and jet steppin' an fetchin' like that becasue some displaced jewish guy was feelin' himself......then, what can they make us do next? just chill out and kick the non-black person's a$$ that says it within ear shot of you and think they can get away with it....one at a time...one at a time...SHEESH!!!
