Name: huey
Comment: .....and did your allow them to spend the night in the warm theater after the screening since it is dayum near zero degrees here in the northeast or did you drop them off at the closest 7/11???

Name: ImJustAsking
Comment: Mayor Fenty has good intentions and good energy, this is sweet...except for the fact that in this city you can work hard as hell and still be homeless...he should have announced a plan for more affordable housing at the end of the movie.

Name: fanteeking
Comment: This wuz a great sound bite for the 6 o'clock news. I bet his family slept in a nice, warm house after the movie wuz over.

Name: McNasty
Comment: I can't think of a better motivation for them. I get tired of 30 and 40 year old black men on the corner begging. Of course along with that movie Fenty needs to check out the rehab programs and bring them up to par so they all can transition off the streets!

Name: DCGG
Comment: Oh pulease - I get sick and tired of old mofos that ain't handicap standing round beggin for change, get a got damn life ya lazy fuvktards and Fenty ya bets not be using my tax dollars to pay for this bullshyt...

Name: HarrisThomas
Comment: I don't understand the point that my mayor is making. Being homeless with or without a dream or goal is still homeless.

Name: mayday
Comment: Good for Mayor Fenty. The Homeless problem will not be solved over night if ever but this was a good motivation technique and maybe it instilled some hope in some of the homeless.

Name: Snicker
Comment: --->huey & dcgg y'all are hilarious...did he drop them off at the nearest 7/11? LMAO!!!

Name: thelildiva4u
Comment: Huey...too funny. But for the DC folks didn't Councilmember Kwame Brown and WPGC hold a screening several weeks ago? I think that He was promoting the importance of fatherhood. Just wondering how orginal the Mayor's idea really is.

Name: gingerg
Comment: He's hoping to inspire them to pursue a better lifestyle. In my city, people live in boxes under a bridge year round due to family problems, drug addiction, alcoholism and a host of other things. Think about it - you have to be pretty desperate to live in a box in 10 degree weather. Some people just give up hope. This can make you count your blessings. We all have some kind of issue, but having basics like stable employment and benefits means something. We must never take that for granted or doing what we can to help the less fortunate.

Name: Bad_Kitty
Comment: This is a BEAUTIFUL gesture. I wish him well as the new mayor of DC. It may not solve the homeless problem but, it gives them HOPE. Without Hope, you're lost.

Comment: >McNasty - it is sad to have grown men in their 30's and 40's, who are supposed to be in leadership positions and helping their families to prosper, walking up to me, a woman, who goes out to work everyday, begging me for money, especially in the downtown L.A. area - it's a really sad sight. It really hurts me to have to ask the question, why are these men out here in this condition. One man asked me to buy him a sandwich at a convenience store downtown, and I said to go ahead and get it and i'll pay for it, so when we got to the check out stand, he had loaded up his arms with all kinds of goodies for me to pay for. I went ahead and paid for it; what was I going to say, put it all back - he put me on the spot.

Comment: I don't know what to think about this. It was a nice gesture, but ill-placed because it seems to infer that all that homeless people need is a little motivation. That isn't true. I too tire of grown azz Black Men begging from me on the corner (oddly, I have never been approached by a Black Woman with a baby on her hip), but I am astute enough to know that those brothers do not constitute the majority of the homeless. There are the veterans and the mentally ill as well. Our country no longer funds institutions for the mentally ill so they are on the street. Lack of jobs and affordable housing also fit into the equation. In this country we need to get serious about the homeless situation (as we spend billions in Iraq) and stop trying to treat it with a band-aid. Many many of us are a paycheck away from being homeless.

Name: MzTee
Comment: I think the mayor's heart is in the right place and this certainly is a positive step for him to at least acknowledge homelessness, which many other public officials are loathe to do. But um', I hope he has something more substantive planned (e.g., contracts with local businesses/government to hire these folks, job training, and life skills) to help these folks re-integrate back into society.

Comment: DCGG, LMBAO (again!)... My first thought was how is this gonna help. However, if this man on who's life "...Happyness" is based can do it WITH a child to support, then these men out here with no responsibilities can damned sure do it too. Hopefully, it'll inspire them to atleast try.

Comment: In the heart of Chicago, under the buildings were the posh live (aka Oprah) is Lower Wacker Drive. Here on any given winters day, you'll find every type of homeless tucked in the crevices trying to sheild themsevles from the elements. It is night and day the two lifestyles. From time to time, the cops go down there a blast them out. But eventually, they go back. Sad....Some including myself have taken blankets, meat to them. They are so greatful. For the person that said these are US vets, and ppl with mental issues this is true. These were some of the first budgets to get cut during the eighties and never funded back up. This has always been one of my fears; being homeless. Some of us are only a paycheck or an illness away from being in this same predicament.

Name: BlackThought
Comment: Indip, I say the same thing all the time about the homeless on Lower Wacker. It pizzed me off when they built that stupid Millenium Park. Can you imagine what will happen to the troops fighting in this war when they do finally come home? Scary.

Name: Harriet
Comment: BlackThought- That is a scary thought. Makes me think of DEAD PRESIDENTS. Great movie!

Name: Victornator
Comment: I wonder if they cleaned them up before the screening. If not, I bet it was a hot funky mess up in there. If one person gets off the street after this gesture, it was worth it. I still need to find out which theater they showed it in because If they did not clean them up, I would not want to sit in one of those seats.

Name: McNasty
Comment: There are a lot of things that can be done but none on this board are in a position to do more than talk. He has to start somewhere and putting something positive on their minds is as good a place as any. Are any of you working with the officials in your own cities on this problem? No, then did you send your letters of suggestion and offers of assistance to anyone? Not yet, okay we'll see how it shakes out after all the voices of reason join the struggle to get our brethren and sistren off the damn streets.

Name: YLawdY
Comment: Nice gesture. Bet they would have appreciated being invited to dinner and a warm/safe place to sleep more.

Name: 2ndChance
Comment: thelildiva4u, i was about to post about kwame having done the same thing. dcgg i imagine both yours and my tax dollars went into this venture. hopefully he took them to a matinee. lol

Name: YLawdY
Comment: McNasty ....none on this board? That's a really sweeping statement. And the answer to your questions are yes and yes.

Name: SweetieDarlin
Comment: Hey Indipindintthnkr, you're a Chicagoan too? Yes, the budget cuts from the 1980s and Gentrification of a lot of neighborhoods caused a lot of homelessness in Chicago. I don't know how old you are but I know in the late 70s you rarely saw homeless people downtown. Many of them do work but still can't afford housing, there are different stories so I don't lump all homeless people in the 'bum' catagory. Many do need help with mental issues, alcohol and drug issues before they can become productive citizens, and you would be surprised how easily things can go really bad under those circumstances, heck even under what we consider good circumstances it's often said many people are only 6-8 paychecks from being homeless that's a scary thought.

Name: BlackThought
Comment: Sweetiedarlin, did you say 6-8 paychecks? %*$!, that's me and a big percentage of people in this country. With the way the economy is headed, we all need to be careful.

Name: SpecialK
Comment: I give Mayor Fenty points for trying. Its really sad that a good portion of DC's homeless are directly across the street from the White House in Lafayette Park. Bush sees this shyt every day.

Name: McNasty
Comment: Ylawd didn't mean to sweep - I just don't care for a person to be knocked down for trying - but I think you knew that.
