Comment: i think this legislature is a futile effort and really don't give it much energy. but what IS disturbing is Rock's response. N.E.G.R.O.W.s just don't get it. their one dimensional, short-sidedness is incomparable. no other, not arabs, jews, hispanics, asians, NONE, ethnic group publicly displays such ignorance and self-hatred 4 the WORLD 2 witness. these fools don't even overstand the global ramifications their actions have on US as a people. and 4 Rock 2 make so light of the use of this word. no calling someone a ni88a/er is not the same as murder, or lack of healthcare, but the socio-political and historical reference surrounding this word is by no means a paltry issue.

Comment: Good post Barnone! I still don't understand how they pay constant homage to Richard Pryor knowing that he deleted the word from his comedy routine and why. Hell, even recently Paul Mooney who used the word so much thousands of people became desensitized to it publicly stated he would no longer be using it.

Comment: NYC is engaged in a symbolic effort that needs to be combined with outreach efforts. I am idealistic enough to believe that we can abstain from the use of the n-word for one day. As soon as I typed the last sentence, I realized this is a project worthy of attempt.

Comment: Angel, that sounds like a plan. I was in Duane Reade one morning before coming in to work and long story short, the bro who rang up my stuff was talking to the cashier next to him and used the N word to describe someone. I didn't think it would bother me so much as I'm a serious Paul Mooney fan and it never bothered me when Mooney or any other Black comedian used it. But, it was just nagging at me. I ended up sending an e-mail to the manager of that location. The manager got back to me, the cashier remembered saying it and in his defense wanted the manager to tell me that he's 1/2 Black. That made it worse, IMO. I guess cos I'm Black, I was s'posed to understand or be down or whatever. I accepted the apology, but there's a time and a place. I can't tell anybody what they can and can't say. But, that incident IMO, was just out of line.

Comment: I think the word should be abolished from everyone but I can't control nobody except myself. This law won't do what it is set out to do. I think it will increase in that area for ignorant people to say it.

Comment: I agree with HarrisThomas...all it takes is one person to make a stand in order to make a difference. Removal of the n-word is something most folks on this board have been saying the black community should champion and rally. The Civil Rights movement and The Black Power movement all started off in the face of skepticism and insurmountable obstactles, but they prevailed. If we all think this is a worthy cause and do our part to support it, it is something that can be achieved.

Comment: what words are next? The word "ugly", "Punk", "Azzhole"? Where do we draw the line? Our constitutional rights are slowing slipping away. I know it may sound odd, but she should be fighting to keep our rights- even if its involoves derogatory, insensitve words.

Comment: so will this lead to a "right under the law" to start arresting black rappers who appear in concert in NY? Think of the consequences before you say this is a good thing. Arresting young black males hanging around do nothing against the law but joking and calling each other the "n" word? Now they will be able to be locked up? Whats the next step in a few years? ...will cops have the right to shoot them on site?

Comment: It's "symbolic" to folks who didn't catch that, which means there are no laws in effect to enforce it. As many know by now, it's NOT working for us to go around calling ourselves ni88er/ni88a. So, it's time to just give it up. Have faith in the power of Black folks to step it up for themselves and their current and future generations. That word was NOT meant to empower us and it's doing its job. So for those still using it, it's time to wake up and understand who's behind pushing this word to the whole world -- the rappers/comedians are just fronts who are ignorant enough to be puppets for a little bit of fame and some green.

Comment: Chris Rock is a damn fool who is actually extremely lucky he got a second chance in his career. He was a nobody. He needs to shut up.
Also his ignorant narration or commentary on Everybody hates Chris is stupid. It actually brings down what used to be a good show. He's gotten worse and worse on that show with his narrative interjections. And Oprah just loves his %*$. It's amazing to me how she will distance herslef from the rappers but she loves herself some of this fool.

Comment: the word is often said to show love among certain people; and when it was used to be derogatory, the rappers said "hey call me what you want" I am still cool--being politically correct means not to say it, but the word has several meanings, is a double standard and to ban it, ok its appreciative, however, the kids, especially the whites call each other the "n" word, so what was created to be insulting, has many facets...and it will not go away. However, it really sounds bad when you hear it in those old movies..and those creepy old folks who could say it so awful...
