Comment: Al Sharpton for the most part (and in my opinion) is an opportunist. This is not to say that he hasn't done some good things, but I am always reluctant to jump on any bandwagon he, Rev. Jesse Jackson, etc are driving. Yet, I have to agree with him with regarding to this Tony Yayo atrocity - we can't be subtle in our response to this type of madness. If it had been my child you would be reading about he and his punk-azz crew in the obituary. It's that simple!

Comment: McNasty I was thinkin the exact same thing, he should have called him on it man to man...I could see Farrakhan doing something like that...but honestly fuvk Yayo, he ain't worth a fuvkin march or even a discussion, lock his azz up forever and be done...

Comment: If the story went down just as its been reported, then I'm not mad at Al for taking action. However, I still wonder if there's more to the story. A lot of 14 year olds will cuss out or swing on an adult without a second thought these days so I need to hear both sides of the story, but just the boy's momma's side.

Comment: It'll be interesting to see who the actual participants in this "march" will be. I doubt any hiphoppers will be there aside from maybe the old school dudes, and even that is a big "if".
These rappers talk about beating women (and some times actually do it, too!) and doing drugs and other topics that demonstrate what Al calls "the kind of behavior that would make our young people feel that there's some source of manhood and macho respect in acting in a savage way."
In other words exactly what cause is this march protesting against? Al sounds as confused as I am as to why he organized a march that was sparked by the "alleged" (they still haven't been proven to be true) act of a man named Tony Yayo. I can't wait to see the news footage (if there is any, it's not really getting that much play in the NY papers for the most part) and hear Al actually utter the name Tony Yayo. He will look and sound as dumb as Yayo himself.

Comment: I would rather see Rev. Al devote his time and energy to the plight of the 14 year old girl who has received a 7 year prison sentence in Texas for PUSHING a teacher when she was trying to get into the school, prior to the start of the school day. I emailed the story to Rev. Al's National Action Network requesting his assistance in the matter (to give it media attention at the least) and hopefully, there will be a response to the story from his end. I also have emailed the Governor of Texas and have mailed him a hardcopy letter as well, asking him to look into the injustice that was served on this black child. The story can be found at www.bet.com Her name is Shaquanda Cotton and she needs as many of us black folks behind her as she can get. PLEASE GET INVOLVED PEOPLE! We can't keep letting them do this to our children and our people!

Comment: There's also another incident down south (why is it always down south...?) where two teachers have been arrested and indicted for having sex with their black students, one as young as 11.
Where is Al Sharpton when it comes to that matter? Wouldn't you all agree that a teacher (a true authority figure) having sex with her student(s) is way more of a problem than a rapper "allegedly" smacking a 14 year old boy? Sex at the early age of 11 can and will probably have a terrible effect on the child's future development as well as his outlook on and opinion of women.
The 11 year old's DNA was found in the teacher's classroom and car - isn't that more proof than we have in this Yayo case? Yayo is gonna get his own reality show off this publicity at this rate! Except for the Sean Bell case Sharpton stays fighting for the wrong cause...

Comment: Thunny I agree. Al Sharpton needs to let the parents of this child handle Yayo in court. He needs to speak up, protest and do whatever it takes to get the child imprisoned in Texas as well as these children MOLESTED by these teachers in S.C. their due. These stories need all the media attention they can get (for us, it's AL Sharpton - sometimes to our detriment). Just an FYI, the parents of the young lady imprisoned in Texas will be on the Open Line at 10am this Sunday on KISS-FM in the NY/NJ/CT area. I heard it this morning on the Wake-up Club.

Comment: Instead of wondering "where's AL"...why don't people invoke the name of some other "leaders" who are more credible? Write Oprah so that she can bring attention to the girl in Texas and the women sex'n those lil boyz. She had O'reilly on her show talking about child predators...so why not? Since Obama is a US Senator..call him. Cosby's touring the country speaking to the ails of "sperm-shooting machines" and "dirty laundry". Has nebody asked where are these people?

Comment: musbdherbs: I agree. Believe me, my letter-writing campaign is not over however, when I thought of sending a letter to Oprah my heart of hearts told me, "why bother?" Either she would not get the letter or, if she did, would she take interest in it?? I am seriously on the fence with Oprah when it comes to "our" people & "our" issues in the USA.

Comment: Herbs I don't think it's about "where's Al" as much as it's about prioritizing and putting things in their proper perspective.
In reality, the Yayo situation is nothing more than a "he-said, he-said" battle. If anything Al is taking advantage of this situation to bring light to the negativism in rap and rappers. All at this 14 year old kid's expense. Because as we all know 14 year old kids get smacked all the time, by parents, teachers, whoever. That doesn't make it right, but it does make it a widespread issue that existed way before anybody ever heard of a Tony Yayo.
So, at least for me personally, I stay disappointed in whichever "leader" decides to tackle some bogus issue when there are other, more prominent issues facing our community.
We don't have to write to whomever to bring their attention to something, all of these issues have been reported nationally so if we know about them either they or someone close to them should know about it too. Especially in this age of information when everything is just a Google search away.

Comment: BK...although I know she can't be everything to everybody it would be nice to see her get involved in some'n like this. Thun..my whole point about "where's al" is that if there were enough of 'us' who publicly championed causes such as the one in Texas and Carolina..there would never be a need for people to suggest where AL should be spending his time. That's because there would be other people who are stepping to the plate. Someone should be concerned about grown men alledgedly attacking children. So for me it's not just a case of "oh children get smacked all the time" cuz that would be IMO turning a blind eye to a serious problem. You're familiar w/hip-hop culture and u know how things become a "fad." So, just like a number of them do and even possibly commit crimes in order to boost their credibility..attacking children should not be on the new list of "things to do." I can't say what you or anyone else should be focusing on bcz I don't know what's important to you. While we're of the same race...my perspective on race, class etc. may be totally different from yours. I would much prefer never to hear about what Al is doing for the next few years. BUT, the media will never allow that to happen. That is until they find someone else who commands such attention.

Comment: Thunny: I agree about your post stating that these black "leaders" by way of the internet or media, know about these issues that are affecting our community. However, there is safety & attention in numbers. Sometimes, it takes many, many people to stand behind a cause before anyone takes action. In these cases, it has to be US. We have to stop waiting for someone else to take the lead. Sometimes, each person has to lead, not follow just because a “leader” is behind the cause. That way, you KNOW which direction you are heading toward. We as a community have to shake up these self-appointed black leaders who have their own agendas at times, and let them know they cannot lead us in the direction of nonsense if they expect us to follow them.

Comment: Another thing...
I know the following bit is a rumor but this is a perfect reason why Al shouldn't have jumped into this fracas without first getting more information. The fact is no one knows what really happened that day, so why organize a march and protest without knowing everything?
rumor:
"I've been hearing that 50 may be getting framed with this whole "Who Really Slapped Lil Henchmen?" Saga. Lil Henchman pointed out Yayo as the one ho actualy slapped him, but sources are saying Jimmy is the one who concocted the story that 50 was there and he instructed Yayo to do so. Now 50's lawyers are counter sueing for defamation of character claiming they have proof that 50 was in Africa during this whole "Slap" period. Does Henchmen just have it out for 50?"

Comment: BK..well let me know how that turns out..lol! I really don't know the details in this case other than what's been reported. Are they in the process of investigating this or some'n? It seems rather simple to me. Did yayo attack a child? Whether Curtis was there shouldn't be an issue but I know that bcz he is Curtis...people would like to make it an issue. If the story is true and even if Curtis told Yayo to do that...it's Yayo's dumb, sorry, pathetic, trifling azz's fault. I don't know why this has to be so difficult. Did he slap the child (unprovoked)? Considering his involvement or lack thereof Curtis shouldn't even bother w/suing nebody over this. Now that's some foolishness right dere!

Comment: Hell, why stop with Oprah. Send emails to Dateline, Soledad O'Brien, CNN, Bill O'Reilly, etc. about the young lady in TX. There is ultimately a bigger story here with the uneven sentencing given by this judge AND the fact that several juveniles have been raped and/or molested by juvenile corrections officers and they whole system is being investigated. SOMEBODY will pick the story up, but I would send emails, letters, etc. to those outlets as well. Like Bad Kitty said - "there is safety & attention in numbers."

Comment: Rev.Al has admitted himself that marches don't accomplish much in these days and times and since he wanted to be involved in a situation like this why not speak to this man to man. Better yet get a whole group of them together and have a conversation - if these are truly our brothers a conversation can't hurt. It's long past time to sit down at the conference table.

Soledad and Nancy Grace (who is a great champion for children from what I see) are wonderful places to start. See what happens when we gather together and brainstorm?!

Comment: Since Al is one of the few ‘black leaders’ that the media loves to follow, I don’t think it’s inappropriate for us to discuss whether or not he is being of use in this situation. Like you said, if we had more black leaders who were able to get the sort of attention that Al gets, then we wouldn’t have to have this discussion. But the fact is that we don’t. We have other leaders, but usually when they try to make noise no one pays attention. When Al talks, the story gets coverage, so it’s only natural for us to wish he would give people something substantial to support. This movement will get no support so he is throwing his cart behind the wrong horse from a PR standpoint, especially if he wants to continue to gain notice when something important actually does happen. I have supported Al’s decisions on very many things, but he’s old enough not to make these types of missteps anymore as these are the kinds of mistakes that turn him into fodder for people.
