STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Metallica may be a cool name for a heavy metal band, but a Swedish couple is struggling to convince officials it is also suitable for a baby girl.
Michael and Karolina Tomaro are locked in a court battle with Swedish authorities, which rejected their application to name their six-month-old child after the legendary rock band.
"It suits her," Karolina Tomaro, 27, said Tuesday of the name. "She's decisive and she knows what she wants."
Although little Metallica has already been baptized, the Swedish National Tax Board refused to register the name, saying it was associated with both the rock group and the word "metal."
Tomaro said the official handling the case also called the name "ugly."
The couple was backed by the County Administrative Court in Goteborg, which ruled on March 13 that there was no reason to block the name. It also noted that there already is a woman in Sweden with Metallica as a middle name.
The tax agency appealed to a higher court, frustrating the family's foreign travel plans.
"We've had to cancel trips and can't get anywhere because we can't get her a passport without an approved name," Tomaro said.

Comment: MY PEOPLE! Just because you're not familiar with certain names doesn't mean the name or names are meaningless. We should give our children many names, AND be very aware of the meanings:
FORTUNA DAPHNE BAY
Fortuna: Italian, Spanish and Portuguese form of the late Latin name Fortunatus meaning 'fortunate, blessed, happy;'
Daphne: Greek Mythology, English meaning 'laurel;'
Bay: a common name in the Muslim faith, Arabic in origin 'eloquence, pride.'
This child IS blessed that her mother gave serious thought to her name! My daughter's name is not common. Yet, she shares the same name of a famous model. Her names means 'committed to faith and belief.' Her middle names: one is a term of endearment, and the other is a PRAISE to our Ancestors. HAVE YOU [ALL] BLESSED YOUR CHILDREN IN LIKE MANNER!

Comment: Fortuna means "Goddess of Fortune" I'm not sure if it's a limited understanding of how the universe operates or just plain mean-spiritedness; we have to stop dissing things that we don't understand and research the meaning of things. She named her child what she wants or expect her to be. the Fortune of good things. Her eldest daughter name is Phoenix "an immortal bird that rises from his ashes" ala her legacy.
Our priorites are so screwed, we must get on our black men for not recycling their dollars in the black communites but will circulate in perpetration in the non-whites just to be accepted; not giving back to whence they came from.
Mel B clearly is ahead of many individuals because she knows what her legacy will be.
I am thoroughly upset with blacks in general at this point. When will we wake up?

Comment: I was fully aware of the meaning of Fortuna, but the kids on the playground won't know and won't care--they will tease her. Nor will it matter to the business exec who puts Fortuna's resume in the "round" file, just based on her name (unless he knows she comes from rich, famous peeps). It happens all the time. I knew a LaShawn who couldn't get an interview until she just put Shawn on her resume. Ain't right, ain't fair...but it is true.

Comment: Fortuna's peers will not be my peers nor will she be my son's peers. She's coming up in an era were unusual names (to use) are vogue, so she will be in the class with kids name apple, king and so on so forth. This will not be unusual for them. Her mom and dad will be able to set her up with trust and/or business. Something as trivial as a name (especially that has meaning) on a global realm would not matter. Her mom peers are more or less discussing the meaning and the opportunities that it will bring her child. Just because most individuals are limited to their surroundings does not mean that they will be.
