Comment: nightshift advocates that Black folks not be concerned with the continued negative depictions and portrayals of Black people in media and popular culture.....nightshift suggests that we continue to bend over and get "booked" by white cultural supremacy and racism packages as entertainment......nightshift advocates that we are just too damn anal because we care about how animation is even used to indoctrinate Black children into inferior containement and subjugation......

Comment: ....C'mon did you really expect Disney...Disney to get this sh1t right?...The last few times Disney dealt with Black folks we got Uncle Remus and those stereotyped Black crows from Dumbo....I had my reservations when I first heard about the story line...I was suprised when posters shouted halleuia, I can now buy my kids Disney toys...That's fuccing maddness...Pocahontas?...Pocahontas?...She was considered a Uncle Tom Native American...I'm in agreement with khufu on this...Sh1t, I worked in the industry...It's really more than just a dayum cartoon...I think Disney chose the wrong story...There are too many talented brothas and sistahs out there...I'm sure a better storyline could have been developed...And before some of you say "Why didn't you present a different story"...How do ya know I didn't?...I wish I could express to you the power of images...Disney gave you a Mermaid, Native American, Middle Eastern, Asian princess, they finally get to Black folks...Hmmmmmm, what, they run out of Ethic folks?....

Comment: BOOT to go up in arms over a storyline that isn't public is plain nonsense. The fact that it's Disney is beside the point. It's just another example of black folk picking the wrong damm thing to get excited about. I wish we'd go up in arms the same way about sh!t that matters. While images in the media are very powerful and can shape a child's image of him/herself, it is ultimately the sh!t that child sees everyday that will determine how he/she sees him/herself. How %*$!!ng great it must be to grow up as a black child and see total discord in your community. That must be great for their self-esteem.

Why must we always be the last in line?...I'm glad to see Black folks get excited about anything...I think we've gotten too comfortable and complacent...No one wants to make waves...You address what matters to you and I'll deal with what matters to me...I make it point to never tell a brotha or sistah what battle to fight...It must matter to somebody if they're ready to go up in arms about it...I didn't read the article on Wikipedia...Go back and check the archives I didn't care for the Frog princess story from the get go...

Comment: Well some might call me crazy, but I've never taken my daughters to see any of the Disney "princess" who get saved the price on the white horse type of movies. I've never even read those type of stories to them. Personally, I think those images are just as harmful to the female psyche as music videos. A lot grown women are still waiting around for some prince on the white horse to save them.

Comment: Khufu et al - Here is a story written by Sabrina L. Wright and Dexter Griffin.
"Kalilah - The Whispered Promise"
King Abdul believes his wife Queen Noemi is going to give birth to a prince. But the queen knows that she is having a princess because the Universal Mother has told her. When the princess is born, she is promised to wed Prince Zahgee when they grow up. Little Prince Zahgee's assistant, Techee has plans of her own. She has the princess kidnapped the night she is born. The scheme doesn't go exactly as planned and the orphaned baby washes ashore on a remote jungle island. A wise woman names the baby, Kalilah, and she is raised by free-spirited village dancers.
Kalilah grows up with the ability to talk to and understand the animals of the jungle. Her dream to dance and find true love across the sea finally comes true. In the city, Kalilah finds romance with a handsome grown-up Prince Zahgee.
Adventure soon turns into danger when betrayal by a childhood friend leads Kalilah into the sinister hands of Techee. Techee wants more than revenge.

Comment: i'm always baffled when i hear black people disregard the power of the tel-I-vision. while the role of parents and community members does have an impact on the minds of children, it is nothing compared to mass media. any black person with a simlitude of consciousness or who has studied communications is well aware of this. how we perceive ourselves, our standards of beauty. as a black woman i would be being less than honest if i didn't acknowledge that as a young girl and even a young woman how i measured my beauty was largely based in the western standard of beauty that was perpetuated through the media outlets. it's real.

Comment: The second I heard about this "movie" and that they finally decided to portray a Black princess I knew the "love interest" would NOT be a Black man. See what many, far too many Black people fail (or refuse) to realize is that firmly entrenched in the psyche of western culture is a FEAR of positive Black unions between Black men and women! Trust me, they know. They know that in order to keep 'US' as a whole in check, the Black family must not be allowed to re-connect. That's why the very structre of governmental support (welfare) had built in componets to discourage intact family unions. This among other tactics used to keep Black men and women at odds. I know a lot of sisters will disagree, but even the over promotion of "the color purple" over the years is another example of the powers that be and their desire to see nothing but separation between BM and BW. Many of these concepts are sadly beyond the grasp of most Black people today. They trivialize and marginalize anyone who speaks this truth. Think about it. With all these foreigners over running this country, there remains firm efforts to stay "on the attack" with regard to issues surrounding the children of the very people who built this country. Again, too bad most Black people will not wake up in time to solidify our position within this country before it's too late.

Comment: I'm with MDHornet on this one. Wikepedia has wacked out info, and I give them as much credibility as I do the National Inquirer. I will reserve judgement until the cartoon comes out. Also, I don't think Disney is that stupid to have its first black princess be a negative stereotype. Obviously Disney is well aware of the buying power of the black community, or else they wouldn't even bother to have a black princess. The only color that matters to them is GREEN, and they want OURS. So I doubt they would do something with the character that would be insulting to us. It's the new millenium, so I have don't beleive they will try the Uncle Remus type thing again.

Comment: @Nerd_Girl:
Silly question, but how many other industries should be "well-aware" of the buying power of the black community and still don't give a damn? Lemme clue you in on something.
ABC is part of the Disney family, right? And you've surely heard the rumors that the GEICO Cavemen were going to be turned into a sitcom. I saw the pilot. Disney isn't as smart as you think. The jokes were rehashed, recycled racial jokes as old and stale as can be, but they thought that if they put it on a new "minority" it would be funny.
Example: At a posh country club, we find our three Cavemen protagonists standing by, thinking that they have finally been accepted by the club members. Then an announcement is made: "The tip jar for the <forgot what it was, it was so unfunny> is missing. If anyone has any information or knows about this..." All eyes turn towards the Cavemen.
And then there was the part about the white girl's best friend that wants to know how the sex is with the Caveman; "Is it wild and beastial? Is it hot? I'll bet it is!"
Other episodes were to have been about an Amazonian, sexually aggressive Cavewoman that was attracted to one of the Cavemen that is engaged to a RICH, BLONDE, BLUE-EYED woman and how they deal with it.
Or the episode where the "militant" Caveman gets a job where the "trying-to-fit-in" Caveman works, shows up late, gets into arguments, gets fired and decides to sue for discrimination.
As a friend of mine put it, "So the Cavemen are the new n166ers." Watch the commercials in that light and see how easily it fits...
Remember, someone not only came up with the ideas, but someone else had to co-sign and say it would be funny, hold casting calls, get it on film, and get it ready for production. This is not a cheap venture, m'dear. Keep thinking that you're of value to whites. It could happen! Stranger things have happened... DUMMYA was "elected" President... TWICE.
