Comment: You know, I'm tired of our men degrading us for a laugh. Black men really need to embrace our beauty (especially since the rest of the world is dying to be like us--our full lips and butts). Yet Black men comedians are always talking about our weaves, and dressing up like fat, black women and shyt. I'm just toxic. Can we get some damn love up in here? He's sitting up there with locks in his hair (which I embrace) but yet he wants to spew vitriol about me and mine??!!

Name: Brandon
Comment: I agree with D.L. Hughley -- we're allowing ourselves to become too "super sensitive". We, Black folks, have become no better than George Bush publicly criticizing those whose opinions and views don't agree with ours. Even if we don't agree or support another person's views, they are allowed to express themselves without us starting an uproar. It's political correctness run amok!

Name: nightshift
Comment: Brandon I concur with the sensitivity. But the joke was funny - too bad it is at another's expense. Maybe that's what makes it funny-

Name: SoopDawwg
Comment: So this is what so-called black leaders are concerned with? These fools need to stop grandstanding. I'm waiting for the protest and outrage for Monique calling women %*$!(es...oh that's right it was just "jokes".

Name: ChocolateBrownGal
Comment: I don't agree with calling any body out of there names or degrading them. However, I don't know why these "leaders" are targeting D.L when several AA male AND female comedians have been doing this for years! Now let's get back to the issues at hand, affordable health care & insurance for all, equal lending, increasing home ownership, building wealth in the black home and community, strengthening our schools, increasing the number of black males attending college and universities.

Name: MelodyCool
Comment: Some of you do not realize the license you give others to denigrate Black women in particular. You have no idea nor do you care what we must suffer when you are not around because of your lack of community. It almost makes me despise some of you because of your abject ignorance. A day will come when you'll wish you at least "tried" to have a modicum of understanding for what we endure. DOWN with DL Hughley...I'll be sure to never support anything he's involved in. Stupid coon! It's like some of your are orgasmic when you sit in front of the white man debasing black women. None of it will be forgotten and you have no idea how it kills something inside of Black women to know our men aren't like other "real" men. It seems the goal is to place Black women in harm's way every chance they get. It's hard to even look at some of you at times.

Comment: ...Fucc DL, true that sh1t was funny but it was said in the wrong forum...As for me, I luvs some Black wimmen...Ya gets a whole lotta luv from me...I love those big, full lips, those butts and those hips...When I lay me down to pray I thank God for ya every day...I luvs ya hair natural or straight...I luv it when ya go in the kitchen and "fix" me a plate...I luv watching ya walk...Sometimes I'll tune ya out when ya do that sistah girl talk...I luvs the many different colors of you from paper bag brown to sweet honeydew all the way to dark chocolate cashew...

Comment: There is a time and a place for everything and DL missed his mark. I don't abide cooning for white folks but had it been in the comedy club - we would never have heard about it. Boot, thanks I think - see, I was thrown off by that 'fix' you a plate jazz.lol

Comment: Please go to http://www.nbc5i.com/news/13516728/detail.html and see the grandstanding by the protestors. I think they have footage of some dope being kicked out of the show. To each his own, however I see someone with misguided efforts. They sound foolish to me.

Comment: I mentioned this on one of the boards before. I saw him on Jay Leno and he was the first person who made me give a second thought to the Imus situation. Although I still agree that the Imus joke was in bad taste, I agree with him that it was a freedom of speech issue. Al Roker recently made a joke that was in very bad taste. Where is the uproar from the black community or is it only offensive if we deem it so. From the beginning, I felt like the Sharptons and others just used the Imus situation as a platform to get their face back in the public eye. Black folk need to calm down and deal with real problems instead of always jumping on the latest bandwagon. I am a person who is open-minded enough to listen to differing viewpoints and yet hold my own. If a viewpoint is presented which helps me to see things differently, I'm big enough to say I might have misjudged a situation. There are too many of y'all self-appointed keepers of the black flame out there who see black one way and one way only and y'all are the ones making us look like fools not people like DL Hughley.

Name: barnone
Comment: it's so interesting 2 c how clueless we can b often times. we as a people have fallen so low we can't even discern properly. we don't know how 2 recognize entertainment, comedy, political correctness and yes self-degradation. we have become so blind, deaf and dumb we don't even c that NO other ethnic group so openly and publicly denegrates themselves as we do. u've never heard seinfeld or any other mainstream yt male comedian come on an international forum and refer 2 their female counterparts n such degrading terms. brothas need 2 begin 2 ask themselves why? why is it the only joke they can tell is at the expense of their female counterparts. and lastly we need 2 learn the difference between being political correct and showing some damn decency.

Name: MDhornet
Comment: LOL at Boot. MelodyCool, what in the he11 are you talking about. Comments like yours are the reason I sometimes avoid these boards. Some of y'all spout the most annoying bull. What is it you suffer. I for one don't get called out of my name by anybody. I carry myself like a lady and I get treated like one. I've worked with women who allowed themselves to be called b1tch and h0 and didn't seem to mind. I've worked with women who allowed men to manhandle them in front of other people. I assume they didn't mind because they'd laugh and answer to the call. A man wouldn't dare do that to me because my demeanor makes it clear that while I enjoy a good laugh, there's a line that better not be crossed. So what suffering are you talking about. What do you mean by our men not being "real" men. What are you talking about? Help me understand.

Name: MDhornet
Comment: Here's what one of the ministers said: "This gentleman here [Hughley] is degrading our black women -- calling our black women the ugliest women he has ever seen," Tatum said to Sanders." When did he say that? See, folk up in arms and don't even know why.

Name: YLawdY
Comment: They should be protesting because DL is NOT funny at anytime.

Name: archcookies
Comment: I have never found DL Hughley funny, he reminds me of guys on the corner that verbally abused other guys to make themselves look good. Black comedians have this thing of going into the audience and trashing somebody, that to me is not entertainment. My distain for him is so great you couldn't give me a ticket to any of his concerts and I refuse to watch any show he is a part of. I've felt like that from day one with DL Ugly.

Name: NYCsoul
Comment: Black people can protest anything they want. Why do we have to protest ONLY so-called 'revelant' issues? If there are folks out there who feels there is something worth speaking out, whether we like it or not, let them. They are entitled to free speech just like DL Hughley's unfunny joke. It's interesting that he would joke that these women were 'nappyheaded' yet he has dreads! And the last time I checked his wife wasn't exactly a beauty queen. The bigger issue for me is why do go along and support medicrocity, especially when it's at black women's expense? As much as Richard Pryor cussed, he never deingrated black women. It seems like anything goes nowadays in the name of 'comedy'.

Name: sdedee
Comment: You gets your amen on dl not being funny. I dont understand how he got a break, but thats my opinion. How one carries themselves has a lot to do with how you are treated on an individual basis but as a community, the af am female is a joke or someone to pity for those outside looking in. Some of you may not want to admit this but it is the truth. Look at how we are portrayed most often: mammies, whores, loud and ghetto, pretty yet promiscious, successful-mad-manless, abused, taken advantage of. There are very few postive images of the af am women. And again, this is based on my observations and life experience!

Name: DOne
Comment: Although I didn't jump on the Imus bang wagon, This is not nor never was a freedom of speech issue. The fact the people continue to bring up freedom of speech simply show that they were obviously not paying attention in their Social Studies classes. The constitution states that the GOVERNMENT does not have the right to limit freedom of speech. That right does not extend to the work place or any privately owned property. No one has an right to say what they want on the radio, comedy club, etc. The owners determine that and since the owners are interested in profit, they have the right to prohibit any thing that they feel will hurt their bottom line. Now, the only people who are exercising from of speech are the protesters because you have the right to march on the sidewalk and protest whatever you desire without the government hauling you away. I can respect that people have different views on the issue, but please stop hollaring about freedom of speech because no one freedom of speech is being taken away

Seems to me that niggahs go get two cents over their lunch money always want to be down with whatever is detremental to their own. I never could stand this sommmbytch. Neither Imus nor this ignan't niggah yeah, niggah, he's a perfect example of one, has the right to call these women out of their names when all they were trying to to is maintain and move forward. No one but black women can understand how much and how deeply comments like that hurt. How many of us reverted back to elementary school upon hearing that comment, and remembered teasing by classmates over "african" features? One has to ask D.L.: what made the women ugly to him? and why? I am really disappointed in him.

Comment: sdedee> co-sign...the prob is we as a whole don't think on a global scale. people w/ dl hughley's mentality don't overstand how derogatory comments he makes about blk women affect me a black woman living n israel, interacting w/ yt men who's only interaction or knowledge of a blk woman prior 2 me is what the c on the tel-I-vision. people like him don't realize the socio-political affects of their actions. case n point. israel is still very behind as it relates 2 blacks n the field of entertainment and basically everything else, corporate community, etc. anywho, we don't get AA films over here. so i'm driving down a main st. n tel aviv and what do i c advertised on a 20 ft billboard....eddie murphy's movie where he's dressed as a fat black woman. now i wouldn't have so much of a prob if pursuit of happiness, last king of scottland or even dreamgirls was also being shown n theatres, but this wasn't the case. so again the only image or perception that israelis get of us is negative and degrading. coincidence? i don't believe n them.

Comment: Totally agree w/MD Hornet and HarrisThomas. We must be cut from the same cloth. I like DL Hugley sometimes, thou as one poster said, I don't always think he's funny. I find myself wondering what he's working on that needs the attention his remark has garnered? Can you really take a man seriously when he wears that 'hair'? And before you guys e-jump me, I've got nothing against the hairstyle, but it does position him for being the target of a number of 'jokes' himself, no?

Comment: to: barnone] 10 days ago I watched the Asian Awards. The jokes they did about themselves I found offensive. Even though your more concern about African Americans, I just wanted to inform you that other ethnic groups do it too. Also I cracked up laughing when D. L. Hughley said that Don Imus looked like a werewolf that didn't finish changing. I think the Jay Leno incident occured last month. And it's been on You Tube ever since.

I've always believe that the best way to change folks opinions is to be a better example than what they're used to. I also believe that some folk will never change their minds about who we are so no use in bothering. I repeat. Black folk need to calm down. It's damned embarassing to see us go up in arms PUBLICLY about every little thing.

Comment: I agree with soop. Come to think of it, why doesn't anyone protest about Mo'Nique constantly calling skinny women *ithces? Is it because she comes across as a bully? Hughley isn't a sister, so he will never understand the pressure, the pain, the money spent and the disappointment we have felt, trying to get that straight hair. HE SHOULDN'T HAVE SAID THE JOKE. WITH FREEDOM OF SPEECH COMES ACCOUNTABILITY & RESPONSIBILITY.

Comment: Sisters are the ones who have to endure the pressure of fitting into the European standard of beauty. How many times do you see sisters on any television show, especially when it's mainstream, with their hair in it's natural state? VERY SELDOM AND NEVER. Brothers aren't told they aren't beautiful because their hair is nappy. Sisters are. If they weren't, they wouldn't spend so much time giving their money to beauty shops buying weaves, and getting perms all the time.

Comment: MelodCool said, "...It's hard to even look at some of you at times..." As a Black male, believe me, I know. That attitude has been pushed back in my face enough by total strangers to the point that I stopped asking myself a long time ago, "What the f*ck did I do to her?" And the results of that kind of back and forth has resulted in the state Black male/female relations are in now. As far as DL goes, he took the joke too far. If he wanted to make the "nappy headed" portion of the joke, cool. But given that the forum was national TV, he should have immediately followed it up with, "But so am I, and so are a lot of other beautiful people around the world." Calling them ugly on national TV went too far though.

Comment: I have been a DL Hughley fan for years. My fanship is now cancelled because I am disgusted that he would dog out the Rutgers women to get a laugh. I felt the same way about Imus' comments: they were offensive because they were directed at a specific group who are not involved with him at all. It is a bit different to crack on groups in general, celebs, or high profile figures; it's not personal. To ridicule and disrespect a group of high-achieving women who have not done anything derogatory to these comedians or anyone else is not acceptable. Rather than receive attention for having an excellent basketball season, these women are in the public eye because some inconsiderate men have disrespected them. And the Tennessee women were short-changed and didn't get sufficient coverage of their victory because of all of the Imus outrage. To me, DL's stunt is similar to Michael Richards lashing out at the people in that club. Some of the posters' comments about comedy in general lead me to pay more attention to the comedians I listen to in the future.

Comment: Mas90, Richard Pryor didn't spend a lot of time degrading people. He pointed out the funny (on Leon Spinks: "I ain't got no driver's licence...I ain't got no teef-es..."), but he didn't degrade. He also created a lot of characters out of thin air (Mudbone, talking animals, etc.). But for a nationally known comedian to simply call someone or some group ugly doesn't show much depth or creativity as an artist (third graders make such comments all the time), nor much maturity as a person.

Comment: cosign with yunvme. Folk spend way too much time worrying about what white folk think. Who cares. On the hair thing, that's a different subject. Black women are programmed to hate their hair and enough don't have the courage to step out and just do them. I went natural when it wasn't cute and it wasn't popular and I didn't give a damn what people thought. I won't spend half my paycheck getting somebody else's hair sewn into mine. If people would learn to look inside and learn to embrace who the are in spite of what other people may think, then maybe we might be able to focuse on more important issues instead of this petty nonsense. By the way, some of the most beautiful women to me are the ones who learn to embrace who they are as black women. They embrace their hair, their hips, their butts, their lips and they FLAUNT it as if to say "I don't give a f%ck if you don't like it. I KNOW I look good."

Comment: DCDouglas, your first comment was very well stated. Yunvme, you're right. I learned how intelligent DL was by seeing him on Bill Maher's show as well. And I'm confused at those who don't think he's funny. Years ago I saw him in a stand-up special and to this day I remember how hard I laughed, with him talking about the floor model tv and the small one on top of it growing up, lol. But I digress on that. One thing I never liked was his proclivity to pick out audience members and dog them. That never appealed to me, and neither do his VERY tasteless comments involving the Rutgers ladies.Personally I didn't see them with nappy hair, but I agree with one commenter who stated that if he had left his joke there, it would have been at least semi-okay, but to keep pushing to the "ugliness" part is just plain wrong, ill-timed (and placed, def. not in front of White folk who themselves were in shock), and just plain ignorant. I think it's tacky for anyone to call someone ugly, but ESPECIALLY if the person himself is no looker (DL). So I don't know about the protest thing, but I think if he had any class, an apology to the Rutgers ladies is in order. Poor ladies, so dogged out and all they ever did was just play basketball. Wow...

Comment: D.L. got exactly the reaction he was hoping for. He could give a damn who he degrades or insults as long as he gets his crumbs of publicity and a few bucks, which unfortunately is the mindset of many Blacks in the entertainment industry. Let's also remember that the majority of his stand-up routine is based on insulting the audience.

Comment: I used to love seein' D.L. on Comic View. Yeah, he used to rip into the audience and it cracked me up; like a Black Don Rickles. I still think he's funny n' I love seein' him on Bill Maher's show. I don't have as much of a problem with what he said as where he said it. Why'd he have to say it on The Tonight Show? Him callin' 'em ugly, hey, beauty's in the eye of the beholder, so I ain't mad at him. MELODYCOOL, ya lost me. "It's like some of ya'll are orgazmic when you sit in front of the white man debasing black women." You must know some bold white men, lol. I've never sat before a white man who said anything negative about black women or men for that matter. They usually save that mess for when we're not around.

Comment: MDhornet, you asked MelodyCool what the he11 she was talking about, but you should've asked that of yourself. I get the feeling you do not even know at whom you are casting dispersions. When you said you don't get called out your name because you carry yourself like a lady, the implication is that the Black women on Rutgers don't carry themselves as ladies, and, therefore, they have a least twice gotten called out because of it. Also you spewed, the best way to get people to change their opinion is to be a better example. Do you consider Senator Obama an upstanding example? Yet, several people disrisively refer to him as the "magic Negro". Matter of fact, you probably don't even realize that saying we need to be better puts the onus of racism on Black people. If being "better" was the problem, there would not be a plethora of high-achieving Black professionals that speak of the racism they still suffer. So what the he11 are you talking about.

Comment: I hope the Rutgers basketball team doesn't regret all of their success now. They are being judged by men on everything but their basketball skills. I really don't understand the point of bringing up what they look like. Just putting aside the global-scale or race arguments and looking at it more simply: These are young women with sensitivities who are being slammed from every which way for trying to bring glory to their school. They're just college kids. I wish everyone would leave them alone.

Hey, I love my women, I love the way you look, your presence, your nappy/curly/straight/twisted hair, I love the way I can tell it's you when I listen, I love women - period. The woman is the essence of The Creator...ya'll are the consummate creators. I love creation. But this here is yet another example of DL talkin' out his a** and falling back on the freedom he has to say it, which he definitely has 100%. When does dude ever say anything of value? The answer doesn't matter but what matters to me is that we (most people, for that matter) don't understand the power of words. Speaking words forms realities when spoken often and intensive enough-- they wrote a whole book and made a movie off this simple truth and called it 'The Secret' [call it space-age pimpin, ask me]. But that's why "the pen is mightier than the sword", because it writes words. And another word that would serve us well to 'ban', remove from our vocabularies, is "ugly". Many may be un-attractive but no one is ugly...that's like the ultimate disrespect of The Unmanifested because we are the manifestations of It in every color, shape, height, weight and dimension. Anyway, I know on the surface it seems like I'm making a big deal out of nothing but watch your own words and see don't they translate directly to the way you feel.

Comment: Yes, Black women's hair (especially the hair) and features are constantly put down by others, but we also do it to ourselves. (i.e. "I need a touch up -- my roots are showing!"). I don't care what anybody says, I honestly don't find anything wrong with the hair God gave me, and nobody seems to have a problem with it either, at least not in my face. You can't tell me I'm not beautiful, because when I look in the mirror, I see a fine azz woman with some thick, kinky hair. Comment: Let's see- Mr. Hugley recently lost his show- right? He lost his other "comedy" show- right? He has always been a sub par Don Rickles clone- insult, insult, insult. Of course, I realize that Mr. Hugley is filled with self-hate because he is just like Don Imus- neither of them "get" it. But they both defend the right to say it- because they don't want to say anything else. Well, I can say the same thing- I can find ugly Black (or any other race) people (men and women) any time I turn on the TV or go outside. I've always considered Mr. Hugley to be ugly- and he is- inside and out. Do you know of any White comedian who does nothing but savage people? Very few- but it is a constant in our community. He is a very ugly, self-hating man who only knows how to spew his hatred everywhere because it is within himself. Of course, he defends it. Of course he sucks up to White people. And you know how racist Jay Leno is- he loved it. And I guess Mr.Hugley has never seen another race of "ugly" women, right? Two fingers pointing, three fingers are coming back to you. I have friends in other countries and it always embarasses me to hear how they know that "Black men don't like their own women." That is sad- but I also know that all of this hatred is really projection. No matter how sick anyone else is- I'm not going to define myself by someone else's sickness.

Comment: I remember visitng North Carolina sas a child and an old, extremely dark Black man walked up to me and said, "I don't see how you can live and be so dark. Maybe you should go back home (he knew I was from out of town)" Mind you, I was only a child and he was far darker than me. I didn't understand it but it was deeply hurtful. I remember in grade school that the "light skinned" girls would demand a nickel from the darker skinned girls to touch and brush their hair on the schoolyard. I was one of the "darker skinned" girls but my hair was longer than any of them. I refused to touch their damned hair and I was six year old. One day I asked these girls why they didn't ask to brush my hair, and I was told, "That's because your hair is nappy." As I recall- I don't ever remember a Black boy being specifically put down in the same way- not to say it never happens. Strange- I am an extremely beautiful Black woman- beautiful in ANY race- but I have rarely heard this from a Black person- although White, Asian, etc folks tell me this all the time. And they specifically tell me that they wish that they had my skin color because they always find it to be so beautiful. They haven't a clue why color is so damned important, or why the texture of hair makes you "ugly." However, my non-Black friends from around the world all know that Black men "prefer White women" and that they know that "Black men think that "we" are ugly." You can't say that about any other race. Wonder where they got that information. Oh, btw- I watch Asian TV a lot and they still put on Afro wigs on their comedy shows and even Black face. They "mimic" Black men and they jump around like monkeys and everybody in the audience laughs and laughs. I have seen them showing their underwear with their pants hanging low and it is a huge joke. They still do this- in 2007.

That's not to say that I have a problem with Sisters who get perms, but I won't lie...when I see a Sister who wears her hair naturally, it DEFINITELY grasps my attention. In the end, though, I call you MY women because you are mine. I cherish you and everything about you...those supple lips, those child-bearing hips, that thick, round booty, and, yes, your hair, whether curly or straight. All hail you, my beautiful Queens.

I bet, for all those natural sistas out there a very SMALL SMALL percentage use natural things on their face, to wash their clothes, to brush their teeth. But they brag about being natural. So what. From the things I read here, the ones that wear naturals think they are "better" than those that have chemicals in their hair, weaves, etc. I'm all about being aware of ones heritage, but just because your people may have done this or that going back a thousand years dont make it right or the only way. I was called darkie, midnight, count darkula and the like but it never phased me any 'cause I know who I'am and that's what my Mama told me I was dark and handsome. I went to high school in the early 1980's when De Barge came out so you know most of the sistahs wanted someone like them so I didn't get as much attention as most cats. Now when I went to college in Baton Rouge that all changed. The black women in Lousiana love them some dark brown brothas and I was given more attention that I thought I was Sidney Portier. My folks instilled in me a strong sense of self esteem so when I was made fun of when I was younger I either ignored them or hit them upside the head. What happened to the girls from my neighborhood who wouldn't give me the time of day??? Most of them either got knocked up by deadbeat cats or strung up on that drug that came during high school called crack. My folks are the reason why I never been ashamed about being my complexion because black is beautiful and I married a beautiful sistah who appreciated me for who I was and who I think the world of. I love how we come in different shades, the different textures of hair, etc. I love everything about us. What I hate is how we allow our differences to separate us. This shyt started in slavery and is still going on to day. It's funny because we all have a story to tell regarding this matter. I can tell you countless stories about how I was told repeatedly that I was cute to be dark. Or my light skinned girl friend can tell you many stories of being teased because she was "light bright damn near white" with "good" hair. Or my co-worker who said dark skinned black folk were dirty. there is not a culture in this world who is so diverse, yet it's the biggest thing we fight about instead of celebrating it.

Comment: DL Hughley has made funky comments about everyone period. He has made negative remarks about dark skinned people, people who wear thick glasses etc. He has BEEN making these comments in National forums (what you thought HBO was broadcast in your town only and only black people were allowed to watch?) so what is the difference now? Negative comments at the expense of others should have never been funny, yet people laugh. If we were soooo appalled why is Comicview still on, why did Def Comedy Jam exist in the 90s and had the nerve to come back? Now we act is if we just found out that the comedy routines are degrading to women, had DL Hughley is HNIC, heck they have been degrading to men too, and women in comedy made it known that men are stupid and only good for sex and money. I do not equate stupid comments from comedians with self esteem issues of black women, it is just comedy and if someone is ignorant enough to take that to heart and feel that black women should be degraded, more than likely felt that way well before a comedian, singer, rapper or anyone else said so. Again negative comments at someone else's expense has never been my idea of comedy but I'm not going to make it more than what it is. I guess I have been blessed enough that my parents instilled confidence in me and I have not been brought down or concerned about negative comments, I have been blessed that I have not known any men who feel it necessary to degrade women and however I've worn my hair has not been an issue, cause I don't let it be, whatever you think, think it but it does not define me 'cause your thoughts are not effecting me, my money, home, friends or family and those are my concerns.

Try being called nappy headed and being spit on trying to walk to school to get an education! That was back when my mother was a child. Black people have been called nappy headed from way back and it's a term that we use to describe our own hair--but we get upset when someone else says it. I am "nappy headed" and proud of it. I will proudly walk my black %*$ up in any store and purchase a relaxer for my nappy-%*$ hair and don't think twice about it. I do not wear any kind of weave, no long straight blonde hair for me! My nappy hair and the melanin in my skin and my large nose and lips enables me to live ANYWHERE on the planet with protection from the elements. Can't say that for the more fair skinned. To any person of African descent wear your African-ness with pride and CALL ME WHAT YOU WANT BUT LATE FOR DINNER.

Comment: Since the subject of hair has come up I want to say that I get tickled when people assume that women who get perms hate themselves. Why can't it be as simple as that's how that particular woman cares to wear her hair? We each have to do what makes ourselves feel good about ourselves. I get my hair permed and it's not because I hate myself, my blackness or anything so dramatic. I just like my hair a certain way. Dang! I don't think you're anymore 'down' than the next person because you wear your hair natural. It's really funny because that's some superficial nonsense right there. I think that yunvme is right, we have to learn to love ourselves first, if we do that then anybody who doesn't appreciate you can kick rocks.

Comment: I was hoping to irritate whatnot with my last comment. Guess he went home. Real, there is a HUGE difference between locs and dreads. Locs - cute, stylish. Dreads - uncombed, matted, stinky and nasty.

Comment: Ya know, when I read these comments I see love and I see hate. I would give anything to be able to put into words how much (self) Love can literally erase all our problems because (the angle of) our perspective becomes so wide that both sides touch...we become super-obtuse-we really "get it"-then we are connected with All that Is. Now that doesn't mean sh*t ceases to happen to us but it does mean that our focus is concentrated so much on the things to love, that the things to hate don't get enough attention to live and so they die. Our uniforms are beautiful in all the different shades and sizes they come in but we shouldn't get caught-up on that - that's part of the hoax, the stuff that doesn't matter - the soul is what makes us appealing (or not) because it's the only thing that's real-- it will never die~ever. Oh yeah, nobody on this board should suffer, unless they want to, because it's not in our nature to do that. I ain't preaching 'cause I ain't a pimp but I will say that the hourglass is empty and it's time-out for all of this victim sh*t, We Are Victors. It would help to stop listening (buying-into) to all the lies on the outside (TV, paper, so-called friends and family and our minds(egos)) and tune-in to that One voice...not the one in our heads (that's the lie) but the one that's in our hearts (that's the truth). Peace to the board! OnelOve...

Comment: Fran: I'll definitely give you that! I'd feel better too if he made the "look at my hair" comment. We make fun of ourselves all the time. As I said in my previous post, it's just where he it that bothers me. You had another good point, he said it "as if he is not Black". Damn.

Comment: I forgot to say that whoever said that folk in Africa live that way because they have no other choice is 1000 percent correct. I'm sure they would love to have as many 'western' conveniences as they could get...we need to stop playin' like we want to be so African. Having your hair natural and your house full of African art does not equate to the suffering going on in Africa. How many of us want to be down with extreme poverty with little to no hope????

Name: SweetieDarlin
Comment: Realuvbaby> You had me until you made the comments about fair-skinned people if you are talking about light skinned people you just did the same thing that you accused others of doing, making a deragotory comment about someone to make yourself feel better. BTW uh-fair skinned that terminology also was used to create a view of light skinned superiority, there is no fair skin, unless you think there is unfair skin, any more that there is good hair unless your hair washes itself, designs itself in what ever style you think of without you having to touch it, and hair that looked perfect no matter the weather or activity THAT would be good hair so I guess no one has good hair or better yet, whatever hair comes out of your head, however you chose to style it, it's all good hair. LOVINLIFE> I sometimes have permed hair, sometimes I wear a natural kinky curly wig. Am I confused and only hating myself sometimes---or is it that hair ain't a thing, long as it looks nice to me LOL!

Comment: lovinlife> u perpetuate the stereotype when u equate all things comfortable and nice to "western" and poverty and huts 2 african. africa/african culture is very diverse and rich. the house i lived n n africa could stand up to any suburban upscale home.

Comment: >lovin, I agree with you...everyone has their own tastes, likes & dislikes. My hair is thinning in the front and it's heriditary and altho I'd like to rock the natural fro sometimes, I can't. So, I wear weave and it looks good TO ME. I don't give a hell who doesn't like it, as long as *I* like it because I'm the one that's gotta wear it on my head...People need to stop trippin' off what other folks think about them (especially yt folks). Why does anybody care what they think??? Why does anybody care what ANYBODY thinks about them? That just puzzles me...when my 16 y/o get's dressed and says "momma, how do I look" I ask her "how do YOU think you look?" I say that to try to get her in the habit of NOT waiting for someone to validate or compliment you because if you feel that you are beautiful, then that's all that matters. She carries herself like a young lady and as long as I approve of what she's wearing and she ain't lookin' like a hoochie, then it's all good.

Comment: Size12> Keep on teaching your daughter, that ploy does work, my mom used to do that to me---when I was 16 it used to make me mad because I saw so many people on the street who seemingly didn't have a mirror at all, but anyway when I got older I saw exactly what she was trying to do.

Comment: I don't understand why this is still an issue. I don't know may be it's just me but I happen to think locks (on some people) are beautiful. I think natural hair is beautiful when it's styled. I prefer my hair straightened but I don't put down others who don't. I just love that we are that versitle and can do those things. What seems to be a blessing to me, so many are making it out to be a curse. This is not to lesson the fact that their are people out there with "issues" regarding color, hair etc. But that's their problem. I say do whateva works for you. Me, I'm taking my nappy headed behind to the salon to get a relaxer Friday cause this DC heat has got my edges BEADY! LOL.

Comment: Barnone..I'm azzuming that post people got the joke. *scratching head* As w/Imus, things like the nut DL always make us "aware" but only for a minute. Next week, we'll back right back to where we were. DL is CORNY and not in a good way. I've never been able to stomach him. Everything about him seems contrived. I agree w/the poster who said he should get on Leno and talk about hymies and see how far his free speech takes him. LOL@AL...see there u go..ain't u belidomindoranspanic or some'n..lol jfwu.

Comment: barnone > I was speaking in very general terms based on what I've seen on tv because I've never been to Africa. It appears that for the most part it's a pretty poor continent with either extreme wealth or extreme poverty. *shrugging shoulders* LOL @ SweetieDarlin...you're a confused soul. Asize12 > I like that comment to your daughter...I'ma have to bite that line.

Comment: Barnone I look at tv for entertainment purposes not a place to get my cues from nor for women to emulate. My mother did her job so when I look at all the women you mentioned - it's their talent I look at cause for damn sure none of them resemble me in any way shape form or fashion. When I was a child watching tv I used to ask my mother 'momma is that real' it finally sunk in that it wasn't and I know my mother got tired of that question. It's not one I have to deal with now and neither should any other strong black sister. Musb I agree with what I think is your first post. I'm not sure cause I skimmed through so many from women I thought were past caring what anyone thought. The fact is we should have never begun the discussion about what slavery did to us - WE didn't live through it our ancestors did and we are too far from the vestiges of slavery to keep disrespecting the elders by slangin' it around all willy nilly!!

Comment: lovinlife> Unfortunately, I haven't made it to Africa yet but I do know people who have gone (and sent back post cards) and came back here to report that they only show you the f*cked up parts of the continent on TV and in magazines. It's called propaganda and it would be parallel to Africa being a "superpower" and broadcasting only the projects, the trailer parks, the so-called hillbillies (talk about being poor) and all the killings, flash floods, hurricane/tornado disasters and other suffering going on in America to the world. Until you travel abroad you really don't know. Hell, America would have us believe that we are the only people on Earth with some sense, truth be told.

Comment: We may be black and proud, but when it comes to accepting all of our African-ness, it's sad to see that some have a problem with it. We can take no credit for the race we were born into, but no matter what, straight or nappy, it's all black. Now some blacks prefer the Euro-centric lifestyle, and that's ok. But being naturally black and proud with no straighteners, fillers or extras should be preached and practiced. We don't choose our heritage. God did that.

Comment: To those who may question our motives. For the record, I attended the funeral of James Byrd Jr., the man who was dragged behind the truck by 3 white men and walked the two miles where his head and other body parts were dismembered. I confronted the KKK over the confederate flag in Texas public schools. I fought to establish the first hate crime law in Texas and I have been involved in a debate with white supremacy lover David Duke. You have the right to question me, but please do not question my motives but never question my love for my people and our black sisters. His speech is self-hate speech, not free speech. When you talk about black sisters you are talking about yourself. We all came from them. I have put my life on the line for my people more times than you can count. DL Hughley call us clowns, well, I would rather be a Clown 4 Christ than to Degrade 4 Dollar$. The number one issue facing us as a young people is low self-esteem. Words hurt, especially when they come from one of your own black brothers. Email me if you want the “whole story, email me at: pastorkyevtatum@yahoo.com The struggle continues. PKT

Comment: People, it was a joke, on a late-night comedy show. Please get over yourselves... I didn't take it too serious when Don Imus said it, especially since I didn't find out until almost a week later. By then, it was too late to be really mad about it. And I see the good Pastor has the time to peruse the message boards of the EUR. What's up with that?
