Comment: Good morning> Happy Friday.. Whew what a week. I need some business advice. I bake cakes..very good at it. I know of a small business that doesn't have a good dessert menu. What I'd like to do is bake a sample of 2 maybe three cakes and see if they would be interested in my providing cake to be sold by the slice. My husband says that no business will let you come in and make money off their business. I agree. I generally sell cakes for 25-35 dollars. If they sell sliced cake at 3.50 per slice the cost is 42.00. Tell me how to offer my services and get a profit and yet be fair to the business. I know that once people start buying them that I will be in demand.

Draw up a binding contract and have that with you when you have a meeting to discuss business with them. I really don't know, but it seems like a really good idea. Don't let it slip by you.

Comment: RealGA, my coworker's brother(he also works in the department but in a different unit) bake cakes for a business. I don't know how much he makes but he makes two cakes a day. So there are some business that will let you make money off their business as long as they are getting their cut. It doesn't hurt to try.

WASHINGTON (AP) A historically diverse field of Democratic presidential candidates -- a woman, a black, an Hispanic and five whites -- denounced an hours-old Supreme Court affirmative action ruling Thursday night and said the nation's slow march to racial unity is far from over.
"We have made enormous progress, but the progress we have made is not good enough," said Sen. Barack Obama, the son of a man from Kenya and a woman from Kansas.
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, the first female candidate with a serious shot at the presidency, drew the night's largest cheer when she suggested there was a hint of racism in the way AIDS is addressed in this country.
"Let me just put this in perspective: If HIV-AIDS were the leading cause of death of white women between the ages of 25 and 34 there would be an outraged, outcry in this country," said the New York senator.
In their third primary debate, the two leading candidates and their fellow Democrats played to the emotions of a predominantly black audience, fighting for a voting bloc that is crucial in the party's nomination process.
One issue not raised by questioners, the war in Iraq, dominated the past two debates. Queries about AIDS, criminal justice, education, taxes, outsourcing jobs, poverty and the Bush administration's response to Hurricane Katrina all led to the same point: The racial divide still exists.

DALLAS -- Blockbuster Inc. plans to close 282 stores in the U.S. this year to improve operating margins and expand domestic share, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Thursday.
Blockbuster's effort to accelerate closings of underperforming and marginal U.S. stores comes as the company is spending heavily to beef up its online-rental business to compete with rival online DVD rental service Netflix Inc.
"Traffic is just not what it used to be when Blockbuster was the big rooster in the hen house," said Andy Cross, senior analyst with The Motley Fool.
In 2006, Blockbuster closed 290 U.S. stores and transferred a quarter of the revenue from closed stores to surrounding stores, the company said. It expects similar benefits to surrounding stores from the anticipated closings this year.
Netflix Inc. has 6.8 million subscribers who pay $4.99 to $47.99 a month to rent DVDs that they select online and are delivered through the mail. Blockbuster ended March with more than 3 million online customers. "They're finally catching on," Cross said of Blockbuster.

Comment: Kejuan Davis was a welcome sight many mornings at Austin's In the Cut barbershop. The 2-year-old would run down the stairs from his apartment to help open the shop and turn on the lights before settling into a chair to play video games.
Employees and customers were devastated Thursday by the news that the toddler's mother was charged in his death, two days after the boy ingested her methadone prescription, police say.
"We are heartbroken," shop owner Terrance Stanley said. "This is just tragic."
Lakesha Williams, 35, of the 5200 block of West Chicago Avenue, was charged with one felony count of involuntary manslaughter and one count of endangering a child. Her son died Wednesday afternoon at Children's Memorial Hospital.
Police say Williams found Kejuan on the kitchen counter in their home at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, lying near an open bottle of liquid methadone, a drug used to treat heroin addiction. Williams, who was convicted of heroin possession three years ago, told the boy's father that it appeared their son had ingested the drug, then she left the apartment, Officer Tom Polick said.
"She said she was going to a clinic to obtain more methadone," Polick said. "She left the father to deal with the boy."
His father called 911, and the boy was still breathing when officials arrived, police said. Initially, the boy was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park and later transferred to Children's Memorial, police said.
The boy's autopsy was completed Thursday, but toxicology reports are pending, according to the medical examiner's office. The results could take as long as six weeks.
Developed as a painkiller, methadone is used to treat heroin addiction by blocking withdrawal symptoms, according to information on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Web site. It is available only by prescription.
An overdose can cause serious side effects, including blurred vision, dizziness, slowed or stopped breathing and dangerous changes in heartbeat, according to the FDA.
The Department of Children and Family Services is investigating allegations of death by neglect, spokesman Kendall Marlowe said. This is not the first time the family has been investigated. "We had prior indicated allegations of abuse and neglect in this family," he said.
Other allegations arose in 1995 and 1997, and the department provided supportive services to the family between 1995 and 1999, he said. He noted that those problems occurred before the boy was born. There are no other children in the couple's care, he said.

Because my in-laws passed away for complications of diabetes, I want to become a consultant showing people with diabetes how to eat good food and still keep their glucose levels within range. So when I cook for my husband and he test himself and the sugar range is good I save the recipe and ingredients in my notebook. I would like to target hospitals and medical offices..providing lunch and dessert with recipes that cater to people with diabetes. that is an untapped market.. you only want healthy choice or lean cuisine for so many days.

Billed as the "All-American Presidential Forum," the televised debate brought the eight Democratic contenders to Howard University, one of the most prestigious schools in the network of historically black colleges.
The gathering of presidential hopefuls was also a prime time showcase for Tavis Smiley, a media celebrity, and his book, The Covenant with Black America, a New York Times best-selling collection of essays that offer solutions to a variety of problems plaguing impoverished minority communities.
It was the first time a panel of journalists of color, with a black moderator, posed the questions to the candidates.
Close ties shine through
It was clear from the answers to the first questions that Obama's chief rival, Hillary Clinton, spoke with greater confidence on race issues, and in fact she brought many of the women in the audience to their feet when she addressed the alarming rate of HIV/AIDS infections in the black community.
"If HIV/AIDS was the leading cause of death of white women between the ages of 24 and 34, there would be an outrage in this country,' she said.
What black woman hasn't uttered those same words at one time or another?
While it should have been Obama's night, Clinton's close ties to the African-American community shone through in her remarks, offering a boldness that frankly was missing from Obama's responses.
For example, when asked if racism is still an intractable issue of the day, Clinton acknowledged that progress had been made, pointing out that she shared the stage with an African-American and a Latino candidate.

"We live in a society that remains separated for opportunities for African Americans, for Latinos," he said. "It is critical for us to recognize that there are going to be [expectations] on the parts of African Americans and other groups to take personal responsibility to rise up out of the problems that we face. ... There has to be a political will in the White House to make that happen. That's the reason why I'm running for president."
(Frankly, Michelle Obama, who has been tapped to convince women that her husband is the "real deal," was more passionate on the issues when she spoke at a fund-raising luncheon earlier in the day.)
Obama failed to strike a forceful tone on the race issue, and that's unfortunate since he has to run past a gauntlet of black leaders who are supporting Clinton.
Fails to shift with ruling
Although the latest Gallup polls show Obama running neck and neck with Clinton in the race for black voters, that can change if black voters think they are being taken for granted or that Obama isn't willing to stand up for their issues.
Despite preparation that included a briefing session with Obama's policy experts and a conversation with a group of young people from Chicago who were in town for a Youth Empowerment summit, the ground shifted dramatically after the Supreme Court ruled earlier in the day that race could not be used as a factor in public school choice.

That is what Susanna Rosa, who provided a home for Serrano for the last month, wants Daley to know about the young man charged with killing 13-year-old Schanna Gayden in Logan Square on Monday. He is alleged to be a member of the Imperial Gangsters street gang.
But Serrano simply became a victim of the streets after he moved into his troubled neighborhood last fall, said Rosa, who has known him since he moved into Logan Square.
"Richard Daley wants us to look under our kids' bed," said Rosa, 38. "Well, he needs to come live here and see what is going on. . . . This is a rough neighborhood. Some of these kids don't listen. . . . These kids need jobs."
At a news conference Tuesday, Daley questioned where Serrano's parents were, called him a "punk," and told other parents to keep better tabs on their children and take away weapons they find in their homes.
Life changed after moving to city
Thursday, Serrano's lawyer, Gal %*$!etzky, described him as "an excellent good boy" who a year ago left his father's "stable" suburban home to live with his "unstable" mother.
Serrano was reared in the west suburbs. He graduated last year from West Leyden High School in Northlake and regularly attended mass, said his stepmother, who helped raise Serrano with his biological father.
Serrano even wanted to be a police officer, said his stepmother, who asked that her name not be used. But his life changed when he moved to the 3500 block of West Dickens to stay with his biological mother, his friends and stepmother said.
The neighborhood is plagued by gangs: the Imperial Gangsters and the rival Spanish Cobras. In fact, the three-flat home that housed Serrano and Rosa is referred to as the "gang house" by some residents.
Serrano's friends said he was forced into the gang just a couple of months ago.
"He is living in the city, and that is when his life changed," said his stepmother, who also expressed condolences to Schanna's family. "He was a great kid."

Exploring the question of whether love really is blind, the Mix matched up two listeners who'd never laid eyes on each other for possible matrimony.
The six-week stunt culminated last April in a lavishly planned wedding at which the would-be bride and groom met face to face at the very last minute.
In the end, Laura O'Connor and T.R. Bell decided not to go through with the marriage. Two weeks later, Bell told O'Connor he just wanted to be friends.

So far, so bad, according to drummer Stewart Copeland. He ripped the reunion tour’s opening night in Vancouver four weeks ago on his Web site, stewartcopeland.net, calling it “unbelievably lame.”
“We are the mighty Police and we are totally at sea,” he wrote. Guitarist Andy Summers was so far off the beat he was “in Idaho,” and Sting’s stage movements were more reminiscent of “a petulant pansy instead of the god of rock.”
Copeland is one of the feistiest and funniest voices in rock, that rare superstar musician unafraid to tell it exactly as it is. Even his harshest remarks about the Police were coated in humor; it’s clear he was as much amused by the opening-night debacle as disturbed by it.
But the folks who paid $225 plus service fees to attend the show, let alone the folks who paid even more exorbitant scalpers’ rates, deserved better. For many, merely being in the presence of an iconic band playing its first concerts in 23 years might’ve sufficed. But for those kinds of prices, “unbelievably lame” shouldn’t cut it.
There’s nothing lame about the size of the Police’s bank account. The North American tour has already sold nearly 1 million tickets, and pulled in more than $100 million in revenue. That should be reason enough to cheer up Sting, whose career had sunk off the charts after he released an album last year of lute-based Elizabethan folk songs. But so far the band’s singer-bassist-songwriter has been praised more for his buff physique than for the intensity he’s bringing to his performances.

A 43-year-old Hapeville woman was convicted this week of pimping her teenage goddaughter and the girl's best friend for $40.
The 15-year-old Florida girl was visiting her father with her 16-year-old friend when they stopped by Susan Carrie's house in June 2004.
There, Carrie plied the girls with alcohol and forced her goddaughter to have sex with her friend, Timothy Bridges, a spokeswoman with the Fulton County district attorney's office said.
Bridges had paid Carrie $40 for the use of a bedroom in the house. Carrie also put a condom on Bridges, officials said.
The girls testified that when the goddaughter resisted, Carrie took off her clothes and had sex with the man in front of them.
Carrie was convicted Monday of one count of child molestation and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Judge Christopher Brasher also ruled that Carrie has to register as a sex offender and cannot have contact with any children except her own 7-year-old daughter, who is in state custody.
Bridges was sentenced to 10 years' probation and also has to register as a sex offender.
There was evidence, said Assistant District Attorney Hilton Miller, that Bridges "might have been misled about the girls' true ages."

MURPHY, Texas -- A sting in which police teamed up with 'Dateline NBC' to catch online pedophiles was supposed to send a Texas-style warning about this Dallas suburb: Don't mess with Murphy.
Instead, it has turned into a fiasco.
One of the 25 men caught in the sting -- a prosecutor from a neighboring county -- committed suicide when police came to arrest him. The Murphy city manager who approved the operation lost his job in the ensuing furor.
And the district attorney is refusing to prosecute any of the men, saying many of the cases were tainted by the involvement of amateurs.
'Certainly these people should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, but the fact that this was all done for television cameras raises some questions,' said Mayor Bret Baldwin.
It is the first time in nine 'Dateline NBC: To Catch a Predator' stings across the country that prosecutors did not pursue charges.
'Dateline' has made entertainment out of contacting would-be child molesters over the Internet, luring them to a meeting place, and videotaping their humiliating confrontations with reporter Chris Hansen.
'Dateline' works with an activist group called Perverted Justice, which supplies adults who troll Internet chat rooms, posing as underage boys and girls, and try to collect incriminating sex talk.
City manager Craig Sherwood approved such an operation in this well-to-do community of 11,000 after being approached by 'Dateline' and Perverted Justice, but he never informed the mayor. He said secrecy was necessary for the sting.
Collin County District Attorney John Roach dropped all charges. He said that in 16 of the cases, he had no jurisdiction.
'The fact that somebody besides police officers were involved is what makes this case bad,' said Roach.

gang, I need some sound advice, not critisism, not sarcastic, snarky remarks, just some wisdom and "been there, did this to get better" stories, as well as pearls of wisdom.
My doctor put me ln disability a/o today until 7/16 to get my diabetes and high blood pressure in check. she overloaded all meds, gave me new ones i haven't tried, and told me if this, plus exercise and change of diet, doesnt bring them down, then she will have no choice but to put me on injections, which is the death knell for me...I have 2 weeks off to exercise, change diet, and i have time on my hands to try different and new things to bring the numbers down. any ideas, suggestions, things yuou have tried and worked? I am at my wits end, and need to be around for my son. now I will be gone to help my mother, but will check in a little later to see rteactions and comments from posters. thanks for any and all comments and suggestions.

Because the first thing people look for when looking in the yellow pages is the price. The internet is good too. Invest in a real pretty website and you'd be amazed. Once the word gets around, people will be coming to you asking for your cakes. If you go with the restaurant, they may want to take a portion of what you make and you can never tell what they sold or didn't sell. Another thing, the majority of my business now comes from word of mouth. If your business is good and you have good prices, you'll tell a few people but if you've your business is bad, you'll tell everybody!

I've gotten a lot of great information as well as recipes from it and quite often they feature discussions about diabetes and other health related issues specific to us. 3rd. I can't impress upon you the importance of exercise for us. Diet means nothing unless coupled with a regular exercise routine. you'll sleep better, breathe better, feel better overall and the weight loss will easier to maintain. 4th. I've also found excellent resources about dieet and nutrition at www.prevention.com hope this helps...the very best to you!

Comment: bigned69, I live in NYC and my doctor told me the same thing. I cut out all fast food, all soda and started walking 1 hour every night after work. I watch the food channel for recipe ideas and I make sure I cook every weekend so I have healthy food for lunch every day. I take meds but I still do my workouts every day. It really makes a difference. Hope this helps.

When she exited the stage to dance into the crowd during her performance of "Like a Boy," she ended James Brown style, getting a robe thrown on her — with a curious "25?" across the back.
Speculation has been raining down ever since. Some have said that, because Ciara is rumored to be dating 50 Cent, the 25 was a nod to their relationship. (Get it? Half of 50 is 25.) Others have said that, since she has also been linked to NFL star Reggie Bush, she might have been trying to tease her alleged relationship with New Orleans Saints player #25.
Backstage at the awards show, she shut down all the rumors and explained that "25?" was her way of questioning her placement on BET's Top 25 Dancers list, the network's recent countdown of the greatest dancers of all time. She landed in last place, at #25. When the list came out, nobody questioned such veterans as Michael Jackson and James Brown being placed above her — but when Diddy, Shakira, Prince and even Missy Elliott were slotted above her, fans and critics raised their eyebrows.
"I don't know if you've seen the Top 25 Dancers countdown on BET; I acknowledged that," she admitted, quashing the other rumors.
"It was truly a blessing to be here," she added about the awards. "To be acknowledged by BET, BET Awards in particular, means a lot. And to be able to perform with all other the other talented performers that were there tonight really meant a lot to me. ... It was a fun experience, I was looking forward to it, it was my second time performing. I just wanted to come and show my evolution."
