Comment: Wow, doesn't Reggie know that's the same argument that's been used for Sambo, Mammy, and N*gger Jim" for decades?! Focusing on negative stereotypes is never a good thing, because the message delivered is never the intended message. We realize that many of those people exist within our own communities (and in some instances family), but there are too many images like that already depicted on television. I will applaud Reggie on "Baldwin Hills". I watched that show last night (2 epsiodes). Boy am I glad that Tracy Edmonds didn't produce it, because all of her stuff wreaks of negative stereotypes... but "Baldwin Hills" shows another aspect of Black family life (a wealthier, more intelligent, and more progreesive side). That said... EUR, you didn't give the address of the online petition against "Hot Ghetto Mess".

Comment: You would think Reggie Hudlin and Debra Lee had sense enough to know that this show was "hot ghetto" trash. When the preview was first shown, I had a feeling there would be trouble, but I guess the bosses at BET did not feel the same way!I hope the show gets cancelled anyways. These are college educated people making the most uneducated and dangerous decisions on the planet.Oh,brother!shaking my throbbing head!!IMO,"BET we got to do better!"

Comment: Great job BET...take every opportunity to further advance the negative depiction/images of black folks that 25/20s have had of us for decades. Why don't you stick a broom up our azzes and sweep the floor with us while you're at it?

Comment: Whatever happen to the days of Donnie Simpson and his co-host(can not remember her name). Those were the days of good music and clean videos and they will never come back again. During their reign was when BET was at it's best..now BET is a hot ghetto mess...

Comment: Let's see now...there were those who thought The Cosby's weren't black enough. There were those who thought The Cosby's were the perfect depiction of "black." There are those who think Hot Ghetto Mess is "black." There are those who think Hot Ghetto Mess is buffoonery. Which clearly shows that we ARE NOT a monolithic bloc. (Are you listening, politicians?) No, this one has nothing to do with the people, the "little man/woman." The fact that this show got greenlighted lay in the purview of the gatekeepers at BET (Hudlin and Lee, among others). To make the story short, there are those who think they know what black folks, as a whole, want. Hot Ghetto Mess appeals to a certain demographic, not the whole demographic. In the end, all y'all did was pimp a low-hanging, "sagging" socioeconomic slice of black culture/life/society. Which means ya' got it wrong, again! But this time, y'all paid with GREEN blood, and deservedly so. Reach for the stars, not the worms (unless you're going fishing, ha-ha). YouTube.com/michaelclayton1

Comment: " that show blacks in unflattering situations that typically illustrate the excesses of so-called hip-hop culture." Sorry guys. I've seen some of the offerings from the HGM website and lack of common sense and bad taste can't be laid at the feet of hip hop.

Comment: Lord help us all! I stopped watching bet a few years ago in protest of their unwillingness to step up their programming. I thought then that there was just too much of nothing and the black community only having two stations, tvone and bet, they should at least be representative of the majority of us that are intelligent, educated and hardworking - instead they continually choose to appeal and seek new ways to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Name: Soulwriter
Comment: thank you, ChocolateBrownGal, well-said. Maybe when BET starts losing big dollars, they will realize that they can no longer pander to the lowest common demonimator of viewership and pass off minstrel shows as 'entertainment.' If there isn't a Top 25 or an awards show on, BET gets no play in my house, period. Its downward spiral in the last 10 years is heartbreaking.....

Comment: I'm gonna go git me sum watermelon, a bucket of the best fried yardbird, take off my shoes and beat foots to the latest jig massa plays when this airs on BET. I can't wait. I want my 9 year old daughter to see black television programming at it's finest. Hot Ghetto Mess. What happened to Teen Summit? The evening news?? Where is Tavis Smiley when you need him. Ed Gordon? Every executive at BET needs to be re-assigned to the kitchen after even allowing this mess out of the boardroom. Every race has people within it that don't necessarily represent themselves well but we don't see it plastered all over the internet and tv like we do so often with blacks. It's embarassing for Debra Lee that something like this even makes news.

Comment: Hmmm. It's no secret I'm not a BET fan or watcher, tuned them out a while back. But on this subject I have to admit, my first instinct was not to jump on them for being the IGNANT folks we've come to know them as. My first instinct was that this would be an interesting show...somewhere along the lines of the type of programs MTV has. I don't watch MTV regularly either, but I know that some of their shows are just as IGNANT as this HotGhettoMess show. In both cases, the marginalized are showcased and spotlighted, just like in talk shows ala Jerry Springer and Maury Povich. On one hand, this HGM show can be seen as an ingenius marketing ploy, to take a popular website and turn it into what could be a profitable show. BUT, upon reading the comments here, my eyes are opened a little more and I'm thinking about the OTHER inevitable perspective: from the White guy in Anywhere, USA or the Asian person in HongKong, or even the African in Johannesburg...and how they will be unable to decipher "us" from "them" and how they will think even more that "Black folks have got to be the most IGNANT folk on the face of the earth." lol So with that, I say no to HGM and NO to BET.

Name: musbdherbs
Comment: And I'm sure none of you watch BET anyway so...Flava Life, I love NY, HGM..what's the difference?

Name: wordonthestreet
Comment: We have got to stop feeding into the destruction of our people with these types of shows. We need to stop making azzes of ourselves and begin to create more positive images for all to not only look up, simulate but be proud of. There is a ton of talented young writer who if given the chance could contribute viable show ideas for BET to invest in. Come on now, let's be better.

Comment: When I first heard about this show, I voiced my concerns about it. Why BET Why?! This shat is ridic...We have a channel that caters to us but they air bullsh^t like this. And that show with Joe Clair and Tocarra is a crop of sh^t. I was flipping through the channels and decided to check it out. I wasted 20 minutes of my time. Tocarra has got to be the worst host ever. All she does is dance around the stage and is the hypeman for Joe Clair. But something I didn't understand. You text your answer in but somehow the "winner" is on the phone line. BET now they got their staff acting like the winners b/c I don't believe they are giving away any money.

Comment: Once again Debra Lee has proven just how out of touch she is with the Black community. All State and Home Depo must of caught a clue (even if it took someone Black putting a bug in there ear) that this negates stereotypes, and all Blacks aren't into bafoonery.

Name: musbdherbs
Comment: Ark..I don't think it makes it any better that blacks, in large numbers, are more than likely the major viewers of Flava and ILNY on other networks. The ridiculousness of it knows no channel..lol I wonder is it worse only becuz this is being shown on TV. I've been receiving the photos from the site for years and I've yet to see an all-out campaign to have it taken down...horrible depictions and all. Did we petition to get BBB taken off-air when he was talking about pulling "dookie-bubble's" out of Whitney's butt...uhm..no cuz ya'll talked about it the next day. Where is PRICELESS When you need her *shrugging shoulders*..lol

Comment: I live in ATL and see hot ghetto mess everyday! I was at the airport and saw 2 200lb girls with the tiniest short skirts just showing all the cellulite and draws and little tiny tank tops that showed lassive boobs with big boulder holder grandma bras underneath. Just nasty and when thier friend came to pick them up they were all huggin and kissing and I say to the person i picked up like why doesn't thier friend say something!! It is just accepted I guess. I think this show may be an eye opener. But I also see a double standard here if this was on a regular network someone would be protesting. Because it is BET it is okay?

Comment: musbd, I agree it's not any better. But I don't think any other network would have picked this show up. I've received some of the pics from the website also. And yes I think it's worse that it's being shown on TV b/c when we receive them in the email more than likely we are sending them to other blacks whereas now EVERYONE will be able to see this foolishness.

Comment: After reading the comments I see that it is not okay, not even for BET and I think that is great. Before reading the comments I thought the tone was going to be different than it turned out to be.

Comment: BETJ is actually what BET should be. It used to be BET Jazz, which played various live performances by jazz artists, at concerts, festivals overseas, and jazz festivals. Now they do all that plus show old-school videos (THANK GOD!!!) and independent movie shorts helmed by black directors / producers. They also have something like the round table on News & Notes, an NPR (National Public Radio) program that appears to cater to a black demographic. They talk about different issues affecting the black community and our world at large. They also have really nice Caribbean music programming on Saturdays, called Island Lime. I'll restate it. BETJ is what BET should be.

Comment: MUS>>>> Bufoonery is bufoonery. I refuse to watch Flav, Charm school, College hill, ILNY, because I see no redeeming qualities in the program or its characters, they are exploited to the highest degree and more importantly, they are exploiting themselves all for the mighty dollar and at what cost? To have 30 seconds of fame? Straight bananas! Well that's 30 secs of my life that I cannot get back nor can I afford to waste. It's mind waste and a waste is a terrible thing to mind. JMO

Comment: BET should be boycotted and Debra Lee needs to be kicked in her azz for even allowing that garbage to air. BET is the worst station on the air. With ignant shows like this one, the one with Toccara (dumbest show since Homeboys from Outer Space)and repeatedly showing the same movies (Baby Boy, Gettin Played, awards shows, etc.) its only a matter of time before they lose a lot of faithful viewers. They definitely lost me. I said it once and I'll say it again, DEBRA LEE NEEDS TO BE KICKED IN HER AZZ!

Comment: We come from ancestors who were kings, queens, hunters, warriors, village providers and tribal leaders who survived the middle passage, striped of all their identity, enslaved, dealt with Jim Crow, beating, lynching, and worse. Through it all, still became scholars, Nobel Prize winners, inventors, a US Supreme Court Judge, politicians, doctors, and so on. And BET, Hot Ghetto Mess TV show and the website is how we say “thank you” and keep striving for better? If this HGM was going to be broadcasted on CBS, NBC, or ABC you know you wouldn’t be haven’t it. MY PEOPLE, MY PEOPLE WAKE UP AND SIGN THE PETITION!!!! COME ON!!!! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!

Comment: Ark...you touched on the reality to why a lot of people will be turned off by this. That is, black people being concerned about how they're being viewed by non-blacks (not that we shouldn't be). Kinda like the crack-head Uncle who shows up at the family reunion but no one would, at any other time, allow him in their homes or bring them around non-family...lol. CBG...I will say I haven't noticed bufoonery w/college hill in the last two seasons.

Comment: I've posted this before and will do so again. I ABHOR the use of the word 'ghetto' to define trashy, unpleasant, illegal and rude behavior/people. It is a stereotype that doesn't need to perpetuated and surely does not describe all people who happen to reside in low-income housing developments. And the more we use it among ourselves, the more credence we give to others (non-blacks) to use it against us. Get angry about that as well as the word 'ho'. Shame on BET for even including ghetto in the show's title. ELEVATE BET, ELEVATE! UPLIFT the race.

Comment: Wow! Its amazing how BET has resulted to this. Remember when they had Teen Summit which I thought was excellent, Tavis Smiley and that one show who had that real funny host, I can't remember his name but he would go around to college campus' and clown it was all in fun but he was hiliarious...when they took that show off, I pretty much stopped watching it and just think, it has come to this? I don't even watch BET and haven't for quite some time. This is really what they think of this and its unfortunate that we allow it...wow...wow...

Name: TGen
Comment: ChocolateBrownGal, you've made EXCELLENT comments on this subject. I agree with your early comment in that I too watch none of those shows, don't know how anyone can't feel their IQ slipping with watching each one, lol (don't know if College Hill fits though). And then your last comment about the "ghetto." I was thinking the SAME thing. A lot of our parents grew up in the so-called "ghetto" but went on to go to college and grad school and become professionals and the whole nine (at least was the case with my dad). At any rate, you're right, we should be careful not to equate "poor" with "trashy"--NOT the same thing.

Comment: People still watch BET?

Name: realuvbaby
Comment: Good Morning, EUR INTELLIGENCIA : ) I've not yet read all the posts, but I'd like to also weigh in and add that though we've been beaten and still continue to "struggle" on some levels, but much of our wounds at this point in time are self-inflicted. Exhibit A: "Asked whether the series has been screened for BET's parent company, Viacom, Hudlin told The Hollywood Reporter: 'BET is very autonomous. We don't run ideas past Viacom. It's me having a conversation with my boss, (BET chairman and CEO) Debra Lee." How can we expect others to do for us what we REFUSE to do for ourselves. Respect on all levels must be EARNED.

Comment: TGEN and MUS....when I see clips of the black women fightin, cursing and beating each other up over nonsense, I don't see any value in that. That is what I'm referring to re: College Hill. If that is not the case, I stand corrected. TGEN thanks for the compliment. :-D

Comment: I was happy to see Viacom add some new programming to BET but I missed this hotghettomess thang. VH-1 airs from time to time a show of peoples Youtube videos, personal videos, etc. Of course VH-1 is owned by Viacom. I did watch Baldwin Hills last night but it was too setup. Especially, the girl just so happenly was in the coffee shop as her friend arrived with her friends. Then all of sudden they were sitting together. Plz. The other setup when Willie (female) was walking down the street talking to another girl trying to set Willie (photographer) with the wanna-be music artist muscleboy (can't think of his name). That was way too setup too. I don't understand why Baldwin Hills is labeled the Hollywood Black Hills cause it is surrounded by OIL Fields, low rent projects, state park, freeway and northwest side of Inglewood. Yeah, I saw watcha name from "What's Love Got To Do WIth It" and SHar Jackson lives in the area but if I had Hollywood money I would not live in Baldwin surrounded by all I've stated. There are no oil pumping machines located in the real Hollywood Hills. So plz, about Baldwin Hills being the black Hywd Hills cause it sounds very low. We can do better.

Comment: Kudos to those advertisers who have decided to pull their adds. ChocolateBrownGal you're on a roll today and I agree with all of your comments. I do question the "supposedly intelligent minds" behind the scenes at BET. I can't understand how the black race continue to pick up so many labels that degrades us on so many levels and we find a way to turn it in to entertainment and that's all this Hotghettomess is entertainment no lessons will be learned here. BET use to be about something with a very nice format even Bob Johnson himself said and I quote..... "The "E" in B-E-T stands for entertainment NOT education".... go figure!

Comment: BET aint' nothin' but a black version of MTV. College Hill=Real World, Baldwin Hills=The Hills, Hot Ghetto Mess=Jackass, SOB(DL Hughley)=Punk'd, 106th & Park=TRL. I remember BET when I was a kid and I loved Video Soul, Rap City to name a few. BET used to be it's own entity. Now Viacom steps in and does the classic YT move: pitting us against one another. My point is WE need to stop letting them tell us who we are and stop letting them be the reason we examine ourselves. Michael Richards, Imus now this. If it ain't white, it ain't right. As soon as YT says we got a problem, then we want to get up in arms. We are so brainwashed, it's ridiculous. For all we know, YT could have started HotGhettoMess.com! It starts at home people. Let's stop focusing on what THEY think of US and focus on who we really are, where we are going and what WE need to bring to the table to stregthen us as a people.

Comment: Let's just say anybody that co-wrote "Norbit" can't equate to anything uplifting the black community. Charlie Murphy is a modern day "Stepin Fetchit". BET is the premier African American Entertainment station and this is what they're offering! I must commend Kathy Hughes and TV One for airing "Roots" and "Throwback Theatre" and other classic African American TV Shows. One would think that with all of the resources that BET has that they will offer better programming than 20 hours of "106 & Park." We can't blame Imus and Michael Richards for this one! I too commend State Farm and Home Depot for pulling out before it even gets started. Lets shut this Sambo Show down before it even get's started. We have to be more proactive in our community before the Imus & Richards incidents occur, even if it's in our own backyard!

Comment: You know, some of us, perhaps even most of us, kinda feed the notion that all blacks identify with HGM type stuff because a lot of folks know that on some level out in public we ebonicize, we use slang, we act the caricature. Yes, most of us get "street" in order to reinforce to other blacks around us that we are "black," uh, "down." I know when I was younger, more naive, and misinformed, I would fall into character without fail anytime I was around black males. For some reason, I never felt I had to fly my street cred flag for sistas. But tied all in one neat little bundle, we all have ourselves to blame for some of the misperceptions of us, ya' think? I'd be a liar, dishonest, and self-deceptive not to admit my part in the "mess" we're in. YouTube.com/michaelclayton1

Comment: I am glad to see so many people as offended by BET's depictions of us as I am. I really don't care what whitey thinks of us. I care what we think of us. I was talking to a friend yesterday about DC and the gentrification process and how black folk are being priced out of DC. He tried to blame it on white folk. I don’t blame them for it. I blame us, if blame is to be assigned. I have lived in the DC area most of my life and I watched my people destroy my childhood neighborhood w/drugs. I watched the drug wars of the late 80s-90s and the Rayful Edmonds types and the other drug king pins and the violence and the club stabbings and shootings. I watched DC become the murder capital and it was black folk killing black folk. I see the raggety triflin’ kids in my neighborhood having babies too young and acting like fools in the condo parking lot and generally bringing down the value of the condo I bought. I see them littering 2 feet away from a trashcan and it infuriates me. Now I see this HGM and it just makes me shake my head. We cannot blame white folk for mess like this. We cannot blame Viacom or whoever for mess like this anymore than we can “blame” Jerry Springer or Maury Povich or whoever else for our people going on their shows and blasting to the world that our people sometimes act like idiots and don’t know who they slept with or who they baby daddy is. I am tired of my people acting like such idiots. Especially when I suffer the consequences and can’t do a dang thing about it. I am so tired of my people embarrassing me!!!

Cable is over 30 bucks a month anyway, not worth it...HaHa

Comment: Yet on the flip side I am tired of so-called intellectuals like Cosby embarrassing me, too. I am also tired of bourgie blacks looking down on each other because of skin color or because most of us don't come from old black money and can't pass a paper bag test. And, I'm tired of pretentious groups like Jack-n-Jill and the Links, etc. that divide us even more. The worst thing for me is to see a so-called, self-proclaimed bourgie person act more "ghetto" than a so-called ghetto person. Example - not tipping is TRIFLIN'!!! And, berating a waiter/waitress and acting all sididee and demanding in a restaurant is low-class too and does not make you a high-class person. It makes you look ignorant, demanding and b*tchy, ladies! I know - I've sat down to eat with you and as a waitress I've waited on your uppity azzes. You look ridiculous!!! So, I figure that if I'm going to criticize the "ghetto folk", I'm gonna come at the triflin' bourgie folk too cuz I really can't stand your antics any more than I can stand Tiquisha on Maury Povich saying this time she's sure she knows who the daddy is! A money management class is not effective if the only thing you talk about is how to get a BMW or a Benz used so you can have one! You are supposed to talk about mutual funds, money market accounts, saving money, buying property and reducing your credit! Get with me people!!!!

Comment: I hear you, Queenie. I struggled with the decision of whether or not to continue living in the community. As the crime rate, blight, etc. has continued, I chose another diverse community. I would love to be completely surrounded by black people on all sides, but I, too, have seen the failure to cut the grass, hanging out at all hours wearing clothes that are 10 sizes too big and baby mamas with one kid on the hip, one in the stroller and one in the belly. I can't stand it. We are so much better than that. Our forefathers didn't struggle and die so that we could live like that.

Comment: There is something ironic about a network that for the last several years has been breaking down black pride and our collective esteem now trying to put a show on the air that attempts to point out the things we dislike about certain apects of poppular culture that orginates from SOME members of our so called community. BET has been in a downward spiral of degragding entertainment for some time now and now they wan't hit us wit a show that will supposedly exposes the negative aspects of black culture. Notice I said black and not HIP-HOP culture because the crass materialism and the celebration of igance didn't begin with HIP-HOP and frankly I'm getting a littel tired HIP-HOP taking all the heat for it. I guess the question is how do we discuss the things we find disgusting without gving further amunition to people like Bill O'Reilly or even Stanley Crouch(he was on Oprah for that lopsided forum). To be fair I tried to check out the website before I wrote this but the links to the content weren't working correctly. Rule #1, if your going to have a website that critisizes all things ghetto make sure websites works when people click on it. Just a little tip from me to whom ever is managing the site. I dont' thinks this show is really going to be the best forum for talking about these things either but I submit that we hold our collective indignation for the premier and render our final judgement by paying attention to the few remaining products that will be advertised during the show and boycott the he!! out those products. While we're at it Lets send emails and letters to BET and let them that we agree Allreal 1 and stop trying to copy what MTV doees with lame reality shows and and Punked knock offs. Let's get back to balance of music vids and information. Bring back Ourvoices and BET news, bring back some real original content Oh and by the the way, NO I dont think Uncle Jeff and Meet the Faith are enough to make up for what we lost so you all (BET) could compete with MTV and VH1. Bring back some pride back to the network please!

Comment: We should clear our heads of the notions that our lone actions are what dictates how non-black people respond to/view us. If that were the case, then everyone would love us thanks to the many efforts most blacks put into living fruitful, law-abiding lives. We were raped, tar, feathered, and put in the back of the bus not because of hotghettomess but because of that "thing" innate in those persecutors which made them do it. Of course we have made strides but until we, across the board, stop expecting the media to do the jobs that parents/community should do, then we'll make progress. At that point we can have a unified voice to attack the institution.

Comment: Thank you, queeniebunz, for such heartfelt and important words. The people who should be educated about this type of programming on BET do not post on these boards. And a good amount don't even read mags or books. They're all on myspace. But we grownups have the power. And I'm glad that this minstrel show is done. If our images and how they're portrayed matter to us, and I know they do, than for the sake of generations behind us, we have to use our power to raise the bar. BET ain't goin' nowhere. It was said earlier, cash rules everything around 'em. The only way they, and others, get the message is to cut off the flow.

Name: musbdherbs
Comment: QUEENIE, the first step is to "try" to stop being embarassed by what other blacks do. What exactly does that do for you? I understand it being a concern but we can't continue to champion ourselves to change our mindset when things like "embarassment" does nothing to advance any sort of progression. I do sense that you are more MAD than embarassed tho'...lol Black/Black crime, drugs, and teenage pregnancy is not to blame for gentrification. Black people, irrespective of socio-economic standing are to blame. I also live in DC..SE to be exact and have decided I'm moving to Atlanta. I'll be damned if I pay 380K to live in a small azz townhome in the hood where there were three killings in the past 6 mo's...one directly in front of the lot where the townhomes are. DC (crime and all) is just too mfkng expensive for me to have the quality of living my salary dictates. Fk outta here!

Then who is? BTW, TI sold almost 500,000 cd's last week? How many gospel cd's sold?

Comment: At the end of the day, I DO NOT CARE what 25/20 thinks about me. They are going to form their own negative opinions because they CHOOSE to do so. I know I come from royalty! I know I am talented, bright, capable exceptional. I look at what my parents, my ancestors, my race has achieved and believe in our success. I DO CARE about how and what my son and all of OUR children think and how they view themselves as they contribute to the future of our race. Our efforts should be placed in making sure that OUR children KNOW they the offspring of great ability and brillant minds and thus can be equally as or better than great. So again, I say shame on BET for not taking a higher road and instead, choosing to sell our children/people at below market value.

Comment: Unfortunately, and forgive me if this was already pointed out---To coin the phrase from the 70s song: Every Brother ain't a Brother and Every Sister ain't a Sister. We keep expecting the programmers at BET to have the community's best interest at heart simply because they are black. As long as they get paid, it doesn't matter and no doubt their thought would be if no one acted like this there would be no depiction of it (hmm remember many posters on this very site said that it isn't a stereotype if someone acts in that manner.) They are banking on the same crowd tht watches other Train Wreck Reality shows to watch this as well but even they have standards, (this includes me so I'm not talking about anyone for wathcing what they watch) this was a total miscalculation on how low we are willing to go in the name of entertainment. Unfortunately when BET took off their good programming they claimed that no one watched it and no one really protested so they were free to pursue the ratings as opposed to getting smaller rating but better quality. With all that said, however, we can not depend on TV to uplift a race of people, only we as a community can do that.

Name: MzTee
Comment: I swear we can be our own worst enemy sometimes. BET needs to change its name from Black Entertainment Television to Black Minstrel Television. BET is just adding fuel to the fire and making it easier for closeted racists to continue to make stupid remarks about black folks by showing us exhibiting stereotypical behavior. As Ms. Celie in the Color Purple said, "What us gone do?"

We got the info a couple of months ago and I was interested in seeing what it woul dbe like. JGGirl, don't confuse "influence" with "responsibility" Hip-hop influences that sort of culture but it does not "make" anyone do anything. As much as my sister like dancing to "Me So Horny," my mother would've slapt the shyt out of her if she chose to dress like the women on those videos or do any of those dances where the public could see it. Hell my mother knocked my azz out for tripp'n bout not get'n the right kinda of parachute pants! So it has to go back to the "home" BTW, most genres outsell Gospel..lol

Name: JGGIRL
Comment: Musb, there aren't a whole lot of mothers out there like yours. So if the media did not glorify this type of behavior and bombard our children with it, I think a lot of it would just go away. But we know that is not about to happen because money is involved. And yes I know that most genres outsell gospel. But right now rap and hip hop are practically outselling everything and it is a shame.

Name: musbdherbs
Comment: JG..most mothers I know are like my mom to an extent. So I disagree that they're aren't a whole lot of responsible parents out there. Again, popular culture influences a lot of things. But, if the concern is what our kids are emulating, then why exactly would parents allow their kids to watch BET? These rogue kids don't pay the cable bills. These kids aren't purchasing these clothes with their own money. Hip-hop does not put the clothes in the closet..the parents do. I'm not speaking from fact but I believe that both pop and country outsell Hip-hop by a longshot....

Name: JGGIRL
Comment: Country and pop are not selling to our black kids and you are making my point - there are not a lot of responsible parents out there because our kids ARE watching this trash on BET and emulating this behavior. If they didn't see so much of it why would they want it and why would their parents feel compelled to buy it?

Name: musbdherbs
Comment: JG..even the best parents raise kids that are influenced by hip-hop culture. I know because I work with them every weekend. It's almost impossible to escape. I think you are confusing the influence with what is acceptable in the home. Do not think that my sister didn't put on her tight jeans and skirts when she went to school. The only thing even the best parent can do is provide at home where high values are promoted throughout. They can not dictate what that child does once they are out of their reach. Influence..yes..dictate..no. There is a direct economic benefit that the industry does not want to end. I don't care how compelled a parent may feel, buying a begging child pants that don't fit is not a "because of hip-hop" thing because they don't have to buy it.

Name: queeniebunz
Comment: >musb - Um, I used to live in Atlanta. You will get more house for your buck but you will also get country ghetto folk, a lot of DC transplants, NYC transplants, Philly transplants, etc. In addition to that, you will get country transplants from Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, etc. And you will see a plethura of confederate flags (that frankly infuriate me). So have at "Hot-lanta" but I gave that mess back and came back home to DC. The folk down there are too complacent w/BS...even more than people here. As long as they are getting paid, they let white folk treat them any ole kinda way and I'm too militant for that mess! And the kids - I taught school down there for 2 year - well, um, have fun! LOL!

What I can say is that I don't have to live out in the boondocks nor pay astronomical prices to live in non-ghetto azz neighborhoods like here in dc.
