Comment: Big ups to Mr. Cosby for keeping on keeping on. It's past time for conversations on 'what to do' it's time to go directly to the source to get the message to our brothers and sisters. I wonder which one of our public black female figures will take up the baton and reach out to the thousands and thousands of women that are now ending up in prisons and in gangs?!

Comment: We need more people reaching out to brothers and sisters who are incarcerated. The current "justice" system is not focused on rehabilitation nor helping felons get employment to turn their lives around. So, we have to encourage former inmates to move forward.

Comment: I love this man. He's a great postive force in our lives. He's giving back. Black men need to stop giving in to doing illegal situations that put you behind bars.

Comment: I agree with all of the above posts and I am humbled by Bill Cosby. I am saddened that it seems as though he is taking on this public, national fight for US, by himself.

Comment: Good Job Cosby! We all need to pray and encourage our brothers & sisters that are incarcerate and not incarcerated that they have to make positive choices and never give up. They are the only ones that can change themselves with GOD by their side.

Comment: To McNasty: Comedian Monique did a great job with her show at the women's prison, "I Coulda Been Your cellmate". She used comedy to get her point across and it was hilarious, but it definitely drove the message home.

Comment: Lol Arkansasgirl! MonieinDC I saw her routine in the prison and agree she did take the opportunity to be real with these women and it was good, but it was a comedy routine so you have to wonder if they really got it. Rather than for US to keep running around all willy nilly jumping on these nothing causes and situations we need to be asking our public figures (entertainers, politicians and actors) why they can't spend a little time in the schools and setting up forums so that we can truly reach out to those lost in the streets and in the system. Our people need all the encouragement they can get and because they seem to watch tv as much as they do anything else these folks would be able to get their undivided attention. I'm not just sitting around finding projects for other people - I do put forth effort to do my part but we've got a problem much bigger than me and much bigger than Cos or Monique. It's gonna take all of us where we can, when we can.

Comment: Also I think it's great that a number of them have begun to champion the cause of the Motherland but in light of the fact that there are so many natives from africa living large here it makes me wonder why we can't concentrate the same effort right here in our own back yard and teach them and encourage them to help their folks back home.

Comment: I'll give Cos credit where it's due on this one. I haven't agreed w/some of his silly tirades but at least he's in the place where the message is needed. Take the message to the streets!

Comment: i agree w/all of the posts on this so far. and it does seem as if cos is taking this stand alone (as far as celebrities go). of course joseph c. phillips is starting to step out there on these issues, too - though in his own way.

Comment: You can't get much more hood than this. I've %*$!(ed about Cosby's personal life interfering with his message, but, I almost wept reading this. If I would have seen someone as famous as Bill Cosby at Calhoun Correctional Institution when I was there, I may have thought twice about my lifestyle choices. I know I have a lot more respect for Dr. Cosby now...PEACE.

Comment: musbdherbs: I disagree that Bill Cosby's other messages were "silly tirades." Do you mind enlightening us as to what bothered you about his other speeches?

Comment: BK...calling children dirty laundry, downplaying the WPost On Being a Black Man as not being critical enough, quoting flawed statistics about the number of black men in college vs. jail etc. I call those silly tirades.

Comment: musbdherbs: I don't know his direct quotes from the speeches you are referring to (and if he did says those things then I see where you are coming from) however, the speeches that I know of - I think certain members of the black community took those things out of context. Coupled with the fact that he had an alleged child out of wedlock who as it turns out was not his child (Camille forgave him for his indiscretion so who are we to judge) and they tried to make it seem as though he was being "holier than thou and looking down on certain black folks" instead of getting the real meaning of the message. Too many did not want to face the fact that many of the things he was saying about the black community was in fact true.
