Comment: Ok... This here (poll) is where the issue DOES get racial. I've said privately to those that I've talked to about the Vick situation that it isn't a racial issue. The Feds where directed to the house after all due to suspicions of drugs at that VA home. The mere fact that Vick and his co-defendant friends are Black is coincidence. HOWEVER, with that said I DO believe that the sentiment from White America HAS become racial when you see folks trying to push this story out there even when it's clear that it there's nothing more to tell since THEY ALL PLED GUILTY to federal charges. The self interest NOW is more than Mike Vick and has become an %*$assination on Black atheletes ... and probably more specifically Black Quarterbacks. Anyone who follows football and are aware of the history of that position in all levels of playing KNOW what the real deal is now. The continued effort to revive this dead story is now a hit job.

Comment: I wonder if a white NFL player were in this predicament, would the outrage be the same. I say no, because white people don't identify with non-whites as easily as they do their own. Racism is alive and well, and it is very deeply inbedded in the white psyche. I doubt many white NFL fans identify with Black players. They probably can relate to a millionaire white athlete better than an average Black person whom they work with everyday. The Beckys and Jims have an "us and them" mentality. And guess what: so do I.

Comment: In Cincinnati their was more outrage over Michael Vick..protesting, burning their falcon football cards, etc. than this white woman who just left her 2 y.o. child in her mercedes because she was rushing to take donuts to her job and completely forgot about this child.What happened to her..nothing..the prosecutor is very reluctant to charge her with anything because it was an accident. The child fried in the car for 8 hrs..yet we have these same people calling for Vick to be jailed for years for killing dogs. Black people don't condone what Vick has done but they can see thru the hypocrisy bigtime!!

Comment: 18 mos in jail yes (at least he and codefendants). Lifetime ban no. Like I said before, if he is still a viable player after doing his jail time and paying whatever fines and community service he must do, then if a team wants him they should be able to have him. They need to ban him for life from having any companion animals- dogs, cats etc. Obviously he does not cherish life.

Comment: While I don't condone what Vick did, I think a lifetime ban from the NFL is way too harsh a punishment. I don't think he should do jail time either, but I think he should pay a steep fine, do some community service and get back to playing football. Unfortunately, this has turned into a racial thing -- it seems Whites value a dog's life more than human life. I'm sure I would feel differently if he had taken the life of a human being, but he didn't. In my opinion this Vick thing has gone way over the top.

Comment: Yt folk would react the same if it were a yt athlete. I don't think that is the racism aspect of this. What is the racial component is that America see's Vick (a black man) as the face of animal cruelty. That unfair portrayal has been bolstered by the number of blacks who have been painting this as a hip-hop, black culture thing. That's where the racial thing is..not necessarily in the outrage.

But we ARE saying.... that the REACTION is EXTRA because of that small teeny tiny teeny tiny detail. Which is of no consequence because the instinct to PRE-JUDGE has been outlawed right? Right. Because I will admit than when white people are accused or ACCUSE....I'm pretty extra in MY reaction. Paris...GUILTY!! Lyndsey Lohan...GUILTY!! Senator Craig...GUILTY!! Lewis "Scooter Libby...GUILTY!!! That's MY gut reaction. Anyone else want to be honest? I have a pretty general prejudice outlook that white people are criminals by nature. They may not be "petty criminals". But to me they're invvolved in the costliest high tech, high end crimes. That effect the whole US populace. SO....If this were Tom Brady...I'd probably be alot more vocal. I AM however waiting on a post.... or call in show.... or video interview of someone...SOMEONE...crying.... saying..."The dogs....those poor....poor....dogs....oh my god....those dogs!!!!!" At this point, Michael Vick has pleaded guilty, apologized to the NFL and the Falcons organization for not being truthful when the allegations where initially made. He has also apologized to his coach and team mates. He has accepted full responsibility for his actions, admitted he made bad decisions and used poor judgment by not rejecting dog fighting. He is facing up to 5 years in prison and was been suspended without pay indefinitely. On top of that, the Falcons plan to get back whatever they can recoup in signing bonus money. What more do people want from this man? Got damn! He was not involved in killing 8 people, it was 8 dogs. There is a difference.
I am the biggest female NFL fan there is and they didn't call me either.

Comment: mat212 - If this same matter with all the same circumstances happened to Peyton Manning or Tom Brady (the two most coveted quarterbacks in the NFL) and the majority of public outcry was the same as it has been for Michael Vick (of course we all know that it would not be that way) I would still feel the same way. Vick should not be banned from the NFL. I was watching the Falcons preseason game on Monday night and Madden and Michaels agreed that he should not be banned from the NFL and they doubt that it will turn out that way. They also noted that several fans came out in Vick jerseys to show their support for him and the team. Michael Vick deserves a second chance. I have nothing against dog lovers but some of them are taking this $hit too far.

Comment: Vick admitted that he was GUILTY. No one held a gun to his head. If he were truly innocent then wouldn't he and his several million dollar defense team have fought for his innocence? People who enjoy dogfighting often abuse children and wome there are plenty of statistics to prove that. Grow up, be a man and admit your football career is over. Sure, Vick is an attractive man, but also has a cruel heart. And ladies, if he didn't mind torturing dogs- what makes you think he'd be kinder to you? Comment: I do believe a person who would do that to an animal obviously has some deep emotional issues and needs intensive therapy and counseling to get to the bottom of where this comes from. Most abusers were abused and when you don't deal with it, you end up victimizing someone else. It would absolutely be different if he did this to a woman and/or child. But I don't believe you can compare the life of a human to the life of a dog. IMO, Peekie your argument that because he tortured and killed dogs he would do this to a woman is kind of silly. And my opinion has nothing to do with what Vick looks like. Vick is not "truly innocent". He pled guilty and the Judge asked him if he was pleading guilty because he was guilty and he answered yes. What more do you want from him at this point?

And I agree that the reaction is WAY EXTRA but this is where the racial element comes in. Would your reaction about the people you mentioned be the same if they had not been engaged in these behavors over and over and over again. How many times has Lohan and Hilton been arrested for drinking, drugging and then driving or some other related activity? How many times have there been some Congressmen engaging in unethical and inappropriate behavior? Can anyone count the number of scandals the White House has been apart of during this current administration? When I hear stories about the people you mentioned, my knee jerk reaction is that they are guilty as well but its because there is a history of this type of behavior with them. Where is the history with the Michael Vick situation that would justify the public outrage?
