Comment: Gimme a break!!! A show about Black women dating multi-racial men wouldn't get ratings no matter what network it's on!! If Black Media News wants to talk about the negative stereotypes of Black women (and men) being perpetuated on television, they need to start in our own backyard with B.E.T. "Flavor of Love" didn't make those women act that way, and "I Love New York" didn't force those men to act that way -- all of those contestants voluntarily participated on that show. Besides, I saw nothing on VH1 that even comes close to the negative stereotypes that B.E.T. has been showing for more than a decade. My grandfather had an adage for that, "sweep-up your own house before you criticize your neighbor's floor." Black Media News is "barking up" the wrong tree!

Comment: Black Media News boycotts VH1
Well I see this Boycott is really starting to pick up. As an educated black woman I am so proud we are coming together for such a great reason. I would also like to take this time to show some appreciation to Tobias and his sons. I feel this man has opened our eyes to the bigger picture. This show is already a big hit and has not even been on TV yet. I have never seen such support for a show like I have this one. The network that brings this show to the air will have the #1 rated reality show of the season. I email over 3000 contacts a day about this show and this boycott, the support is through the roof. I see atleast two to three blogs every day starting about the show and the boycott. I am so happy to see the support surrounding this show. I really believe this man is going to be a face in every household in America. VH1 your racist views got in the way of a great show. Vh1 you drop the ball on this one. It's time you pay for the racist views about us black women.

Comment: Black Media is starting witht he wrong group. It needs to start with BET. How can we expect other media groups to treat us with resprct when we don't do it for ourselves? We have allowed or women and men to be pimped and when other groups saw that it was OK and we were laughing and watching in great numbers then they in turn followed suit and now WE see it as a problem. Oh what a tangled web we weave.

Comment: Frankly, Black Media News shouldn't be going after VH1 or BET, they should be critical of us,we the black public. The fact that those coonish VHI shows have become the the number shows in black households says a lot about us. I'm also tired of people complaining about BET and then acting like they can't wait to watch the some type of mess on VH1. Lincoln Heights, Everybody Hates Chris aren't the number one shows in black households. Its Flavor of Love and I Love NY so looks to me like we have voted as a community so what's the point of a boycott?

Comment: I favor boycotting VHI, BET and cleaning up our own acts. We have lost our moral compass and now support ridiculing of our own by watching things like Flavor of Love.
I do have to question whether this boycott would have come about if interracial dating were not the subject.

Comment: It is not VH!s portrayal, it is the way the women portray themselves. So because the black girls on the shows act ignorant and ghetto they should not show it because it is a "negative portrayal"? Please. It is about ratings! And who knows if this statement about VH1 is true or not. The black girl on rock of love was not ignorant. But I guess she is what some would call acting "white". What needs to be done is to school your daughters and show them that acting like they have no sense is not cool and acting like you do have sense does not make them to be "acting white".

Comment: Can someone explain to me what a 'ghetto role' is? And is this boycott because it is showing some 'poor black women' in an undesirable light while the 'professional black women'(middle to upper class) are not getting any play here? I have never seen the shows in question but they sound pretty offensive from comments that I have read. I kinda have to sign with gingerg's statement that it seems the boycott was motiviated because the interracial dating angle. I do agree if we are going to boycott, let's do it for ALL THE SHOWS, MOVIES AND MUSIC that portray black women REGARDLESS of class status in a negative light.

But if the parents are ghetto too. then it is likely the child will act ghetto unless they are exposed to different surroundings. I would say if you want better tv product of blacks then invest in TVone and watch the network to improve ratings or start your own tv network station.

Society always feels better about themselves when we can sit upon our "thrones" and feel pity for the poor souls who aren't as good as us. Most people don't realize that's why they enjoy watching the "train wrecks" for an hour and then thinking, "Hmmmm....at least I'm not THAT bad."

Comment: I have no desire to see a show about inter-racial dating anyway. We know it's a reality, has been and always will be. I just don't want to see a whole show dedicated to it. As far as the VH1 boycott, I have to cosign those who say we need to start at home with BET and our sisters and brothers need to STOP VOLUNTERRING to be on these shows in the first place. You KNOW you are going to get played on national TV and come off looking stupid. But I guess some people don't care, as long as they get their 15 minutes and think it will lead to getting paid. And we as the viewing public need to STOP WATCHING that crap. Maybe then they will stop making it.

Comment: 6footah - I totally agree with you. I think people tune in to reality programs for the following reasons: 1) to look down on people, 2) to live vicariously through them (American Idol/etc.), and 3) for general human curiosity to see how others live. Ice Cube's show about a black and white family trading places was sociologically groundbreaking television. I know I watch shows where people are accomplishing great things - I LOVE Project Runway and seeing the creations of these designers is awesome to me. I started watching ANTM and seeing the transformation of these young women and the exciting photo shoots and learning about modeling and the difficulty of it is interesting as well. I used to watch The Apprentice because it involves a great deal of problem solving and I like that. That is why I cannot even think about watching any of these dating type shows (Flavor/the Bachelor/Joe Millionaire/Rock of Love)where one man/woman goes out w/multiple women/men and kisses all of them on camera and has sex w/them. I think it's gross and degrading. I think reality television can be very entertaining and educational but you have to choose your shows according to your interests and what can help you grow.

Comment: Atlanta Ga support Interracial Love and the boycott of racist views about us Black women.
Lets not forget what this Boycott is all about. It is not about black women acting ghetto on tv. It is about the racist comments about all black women being ghetto. This means Oprah, mothers, sisters, daughters, wifes, and every black women in America is not educated and is Ghetto. This comments are worse then Don Imus. Imus talked about 12 basketball players. VH1 is putting entire race of black women under the stereotype of being ghetto. This the problem is that they will not allow educated black women on their network because they feel that it is not what America see in a black women. This is a big racist view. I also want to comment on this show Interracial Love. This man went on Black Press Radio and open his heart with passion for the Black community. This is a white man that is speaking out with a passionate heart. He does not seek anything but to make his and his sons lives better. This will be a wonderful show. It has so many issues about real life and substance. A single father that is white raising his two bi-racial sons. This man just wants a strong black woman to stand beside him and open up his heart and life to a good strong black woman. I have so much respect and I am impressed with any man that talks about our race with passion in his heart. I don't care that he is white because to be this is one strong brother. I saw we wrap our arms around this family and continue to show the love and support he has to us.

The black employees of VH1 support your Boycott of VH1 however we do have a job here so we can not put our names out. We just want you to know we are supporting this show as well. This was words from the higher ups that feel this way not us.
I am the employee that leaked the information about the reason Vh1 turned down this reality show Interracial Love. It was told to the creators that this was not something Vh1 was looking to do right now and it did not fit with their network. The truth is that we was told to tell the creators this however that is not what was said behind closed doors. The truth is that this show does not fit the mold just as they said however they left out the part what also was said. This is word for word what was said, “This is not a good fit for us here at Vh1 we are not interested in showing this family or black women in the positive light this show wants to. It is our thoughts that the viewers are more interested in seeing black people in a ghetto role. This show will not sell. Black women are looked at as being ghetto and not educated so we need to pass on this project.”
I left out somethings but that was the point that was made. I did not want to start any problems. I just need to let the public know the real reason VH1 makes shows that promote negative thoughts about black people. I came to this network thinking I might make a differance and show black women in a positive light. I feel we really had something special with this show and now I just feel hurt that I even work here. I do need to make a living so I will not give out my name, I am sure they will find out and my job could be on the line.
Thank you

Comment: We support this show Interracial Love and this boycott of vh1.
Speaking as an educated black woman in corporate America, I know first hand that it is often hard for some people to recognize and appreciate us for the beautiful, gifted, and unique individuals that we are. We are often downgraded, underestimated, and just over looked. I feel that we need to take the first step by impowering ourselves. We can’t expect others to respect us until we show a certain level of respect for ourselves. Putting it simply, we need to teach people how we want to be treated and portrayed in the media. We as black people need to stop disrespecting ourselves publically. Stop allowing ourselves to be used and exploited by networks like VH1, MTV, and any other entity that insists on portraying us as anything less than the queens that we are. We need to start cleaning house from the inside out. Then maybe we can stand more effectively as a united force. The show Charm School set black women back decades. But somebody had to be watching it for it to have received the ratings that it did. After seeing one episode, I was disgusted. ‘We’ need to say enough is enough!

Comment: Protest Rally against VH1 Monday 09/10/07 will be launched at VH1 Corporate office
To all Media News,
Here at Black Media News Group have been the watchful eye to the racist comments of VH1 against Black Women. There has been a formal Boycott launched against this network and has taken on a life of its own. This boycott started when Jim Ackerman Senior VP of Development and Programming said we only do Ghetto shows here, black women are only identified as ghetto and not educated. Ty Johnson producer and Tobias White star of Interracial Love was on CBS Radio yesterday with the Shelley Wynter Show. The interview was only to last 15 minutes however with the over whelming support of this boycott as well as this new reality show Interracial Love the show last almost 2 hrs. People called in to show their support of this show Interracial Love and for this much needed boycott of VH1.
New York, New Jersey and CT Area come support the the largest Protest and Boycott ever of VH1.
We here at Black Media News Group have launched another means to this boycott of VH1. There will be a Protest Rally Monday morning at 8:30 am outside the VH1 Network Corporate Office here in NY. We have contacted news media which will be covering this protest. We ask for the full support of all media outlets to band together as one and move forward with this much needed boycott. All supporters are asked to bring signs with them for this protest. BOYCOTT VH1 FOR RACIST AND NEGATIVE PORTRAYAL OF BLACK WOMEN!
