Comment: While it was honorable that Mr. Graves paid Griffin, I don't think it was well deserved since he rudely swore at the audience after to have the last word. He owes them and Mr. Graves an apology. Nonetheless, it only goes to show that Eddie G has the maturity of a five year old and the limited vocabulary to match. Co-sign NIGHTSHIFT....STUPID!

Comment: Normally I would agree with you DrKnowitAll, but not in this case. I don't really fault the event planner--unless there was no rehearsal or pre-discussion of material. If there wasn't, then absolutely he/she was negligent, but if there was, and Griffin led them to believe (as one would azzume anyway) that someone who has been around the block as much as Eddie Griffin and who has not really had a reputation in the past for over-the-top, then it's not the fault of the event planner. It was a miscalculation by Eddie and it's curious that as experienced as he is, he did not know better. So unfortunate...

Comment: It's wonderful Earl Graves took a bold step -- something many Blacks in the media/entertainment business act as if they're AFRAID to do. And, of course, you always have one like "nightshift" who feels a need to use this word on a post. Thankfully most of us know better and see this word IS not and HAS not worked for us. Mr. Graves did the right thing that heads in the direction of uplifting and empowering his people.

Comment: Miscalculation??? TGen, Eddie's been cursing and saying %*$!( since he was 2.. Anybody with any knowledge of him and his routine knows it's straight profanity and "%*$!(" laced. I have never, ever heard Eddie do anything but this type comedy. Now if you had a Steve Harvey, Ced the Entertainer, any comedian that can be funny and do it without profanity then I'd put the blame on the comedian. Eddie's only funny when he's being obnoxious, in my opinion. That's like getting DMX to perform at your 75year old grandmother's birthday party... just doesn't fit.

Would they invite RKELLY to a children's event? They should've known. Either way, it was great publicity for the banning of a word which is probably a first in history. It would be a nygga trying to ban a damn word. Nygga ain't stopped Graves from being the mega-success he is. Moreover, the people who were in attendance probably don't use the damn word neway..well at least in public. Nygga please!

Comment: Maybe you're correct DrKnowitAll, I have to concede I only remember seeing Eddie's stand-up like once and that was one where most of it was Biblical satire, so that's why I azzumed he had an ounce of intelligence, lol. That, and some of his movies, are kind-of "light" in humor, not overly offensive, so I azzumed this translated to his stand-up routine. But I could be wrong. Sorry *Shrug*

Comment: First of all Eddie Grififn's little rat face a.ss has never been funny to me, I happen to see his stand-up routine on disc and he is someone that has always offended me. It seems like in the lack of sophisticated comedy our people have allow a lot of gutter snipes to take the mike. Instead of him realizing that he needs to take a different avenue in making joke he resorts to the stupid inmature act of cursing at the people. We need to take the use of the "N" word seriously people will never respect us if we don't respect ourselve.

Comment: I'm glad someone had the balls to stop this nonsense. Most if not all comics have different material that they can cater to a particular audience (e.g. PG material for a younger or more sensitive audience). When I was in college and planned some events all of the comics had sheets where they gave the client the choice of material that they comic or speaker would be using. Or the booking agent gave the client the choice.

If you see him on Bill Maher etc. he's pretty culturally aware. He gave a free show last night at dcimprov which I missed out on unfortunately. Regarding the word n!gger, Whoopi Goldberg did a special the other night on Bravo and she focused on words. And I love what she said about n!gga and it mirrored something I've said it before on this board. She said that no one who loves words would ever advocate banning a word. She said that the problem people have with the word N!gga is not the word but its intention. So are we to ban other words with malicious intent? She said her least favorite word, (which also happens to be mine) is the word 'stupid.' And she said she's appalled that people use that word all the time around their kids etc. and no one says anything. She also scolded white folk for wanting to know why they ask permission to say n!gga since black people say it. Whoops was like first of all, why would you want to ask permission to use a word you're ALREADY not comfortable with? And finally, she put some perspective on how older people tend to criticize the youth of today. She talked about all the sex her generation had and the clothes they wore and music they listened to. It was nice to hear someone of that age speak from perspective rather than nostalgia. It's very rare these days.

Sorry, but I gotta put some of the blame on the event planner for making a poor choice. What she said is exactly how I feel and I'm sure people get exhausted w/me making the same point..over..and over..again. If we're not going to ban the use of all offensive words such as ghetto, redneck, fat, skinny, etc., then why must we ban the use of nygga and faggot? Does it really make sense that intelligent people can't discuss the sensitivity of using/hearing "nygga" w/out abbreviating w/n-word, f-word? No it doesn't. It's just plain dumb. I cringe when hearing people discuss nygga and faggot by using n-word, f-word. It's just dumb. If you can't say the word then don't talk about it. It's just dumb. WTF is a "n-word?" It's just dumb!

Comment: I'm watching CNN at the moment and the discussion Don Lemon is having with Roland Powell clarified what took place. Eddie did submitted a cleaner version of his act for approval, substituting the N word for the MF word. Apparently, Eddie's overusage of the MF word got out of hand, thus getting him pulled off the stage. Now, those planning the event knew well who and what they were getting but Eddie made an agreement to sanitize his act. As for the payment, it is fair that Graves pay Eddie considering that some sort of agreement was made in advance. IMO, although Eddie submitted a blueprint of his sanitized act, as a entertainer, he should have been very aware of the audience he's dealing with. Every black person isn't cut from the same cloth.

Comment: Mothership I heard the same story but it still is no excuse for eddie griffin to act the as.s everywhere he goes. I could possibly see a set up but the fact that so many comedians are over exposed why not give a chance to a brother that NO ONE has ever seen in a suit?! Why not raise one's station hell we can't all always be wallowing in the muck and the mire. Our entertainment industry is overcrowded and loud cause a lot of them refuse to grow up and move the hell on. Eddie ain't no spring chicken but he screwed himself cause Graves has very long arms!

Comment: ImJustAsking > Though I hear what you are saying. But someone should tell Whoopi that the word "N" & stupid are in two totally different classes. A person was never hanged, set on fire, beaten to death, dragged from the back of a car, water hosed, beaten by the policemen, dragged from their homes in the middle of the night, etc using the word STUPID, but they have when the word N*GGA, so excuse me if I disagree!

Comment: I know it’s probably not cool to post urls here but I really think this link ties in nicely to this discussion. I shot most of it last week right before Edie worked his comedy magic in Miami.
