Comment: To My African Siblings: Don't be too surprised!! There were opportunistic, Africans who told the european slave mongers where we could be found and captured and put on those slave ships. There will always be "sell outs" who'll do anything to enhance their positions in society to the detriment of their fellow Africans. One day this 'brother' may wake up and see europeans throwing ill Africans into the Atlantic to feed the sharks...or maybe not.

Comment: He was pandering to massa when he called those women ugly. He’s saying cruel things to keep his name out there because he’s almost non-existent now. Why doesn’t he take a pot shot at brittney spears or lindsay lohen or paris hilton – all who have had their pubic hairs photographed as they were getting out of cars with no panties on – if a black woman was to have done that, he’d be all in massas face calling us hos. I don’t like him using black women as the butt of his angry jokes. He’s weak, tired, not funny, worthless piece of skin.

Comment: Wow, I disagree with you both. I can call Hughley a lot of things but a "panderer to massa" is not one that comes to mind, lol. Granted his Rutgers joke was in very poor taste (and untimely) and his varied insults on random people in his audiences takes away from what I consider comedic genius in a lot of ways. My gauge of if someone has "it" is if I pass a news story or a channel or something and they're in it, do I bother to stop and look at it? If the answer is yes, I think they're worthy of the time. (I can't believe I actually read all of this LONG interview, lol, guess I'm really bored at work today), but it was a good read I must admit. Not only am I impressed with Hughley's pure comedy (the kind not involving insulting folks), but I'm equally impressed with his social commentary. It's refreshing to see an entertainer astute on everyday news and politics, it just is. For all his faults, I think his perspective on entertainment and comedy and their place (and his place) in society is on-point. I just don't get "panderer" from him at all. Sorry...

Comment: Hughley is entitled to his perspective on the Imus situation but my perspective is that I as an African American woman, I am tired of us being the 'brunt' of mean spiritness, used under the guise of 'comedy'. I have never found Hughley funny but that's beside the point. I'll just make it my business not to support anything he does. As much as people like to through Richard Pryor's name into these types of conversations, I have never heard Richard make jokes about 'nappy-headed hos'(the ho part is what bothers me, not nappy headed). But that's just me.

Comment: D.L. Hughley was at his funniest during his Comic View days (first, I believe, as a contestant, then later host). Even then though there was a weakness to his shtick, and that was his quickness to choose someone from the audience to pick on, which always struck me as a lazy and mean tactic for a comedian. But he still strikes me as funny enough that I'd pay to see him (I've never seen him live). If I did so, I'd hope he'd have spent enough time on his material to show that he can be funny without having to choose people from the audience to spew on.

Comment: I'v never appreciated his put-down humor. I think it was horrible the way he kicked those Rutgers women when they were already down. He should have been celebrating their accomplishments, instead he chose to be cruel. Of course he's got an HBO Special...they want to see Black people put down by other Black people.

Comment: >NYCsoul - I totally agree with you. I always thought that AA women were the mothers of the earth, and as you said when people make us the "brunt of mean spiritness" used under the guise of comedy or just blantant disrespect, that kind of makes me feel sad on the inside, although I always try to stay at a higher level no matter what people say, but when you have a microphone or recording studio to make records to say your ugly stuff about us, it hurts and chips away at your womanhood, self esteem, and just plain phsychie as a human being. Sorry, D.L., I can't hang with ya.

Comment: f*ck DL! his ugly azz has the nerve to call somebody ugly and nappy-headed and he looks like he stuck his finger in a socket the way his hair looks!....and he's talking about how unattractive women basketball players are like he is married to the most beautiful woman in the world, last i checked his wife was pretty homely looking herself.

Comment: TGEN...I'm with you 100%. My thoughts exactly. I don't always find DL funny, but his social commentary and astuteness on what's happening politically is very refreshing and dead on. I respect the brother for being willing to stand up for what he believes in regardless if the public agrees with him or not. Renetta...check out his new HBO special. He calls out all the vapid blondes you mentioned in your post. DL, if nothing else, is an equal opportunity offender.

Comment: Wow, I gotta say from reading these comments and remembering the ones a while ago about the Hughley/Rutgers thing, I think D.L. might have really miscalculated the effects of his statement, don't think he believed they would have garnered this much angst amongst people. And considering that many were apparently not huge fans of his anyway (which makes me wonder how he became as successful as he's become, there are only like two pro-Hughley comments here, including mine, lol), he might have a rude awakening when his tour starts. We'll see. Hmmm...

Comment: I like DL and I don't think he is no azz kissing Massas flunky. He is one of the few who gives it to you straight. While some may find his approach and subject matter a little hard to swallow, he is no more or less offensive than just about every other commedian at some point in their careers. besides you really don't have to watch or read anything he says or does if you don't like him.

Comment: The problem with this is that it was a controversial issue. And our woman were hurt by this mean white mans words and what DL did was say to them was; you are ugly nappy headed hoes! So don't think any higher of yourself than that! It was bad and I think he did it to keep his name out there, I was a fan but not anymore and for all those who don't know all these comedians we have now are wack.. In my opinion the Kings of Comedy were Bill Cosby, Robin Harris and Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy(Delirious)days. The comedians we have now are not Side Cracking Funny I have to push the laugh out.

Comment: i just watched his HBO special and i liked it although it was basically nothing new. i find his delivery to be funny and his subject matter is on point with a ring of truth. if i was going to complain about anything it would be the profanity and the use of the word %*$!(@ just because he could. i really don't see the difference in the so called put downs he's accused of and the definite put downs by the people's comments here. at least he's doing it within his job as a comedian and these people are without a doubt very mean spirited. a serious case of the pot calling the kettle black as far as i see. since he named his tour unapologetic, i think it's obvious being true to himself was his goal and i agree with him. at the end of the day it's also obvious that he's very positive that some will like it and some won't and that's exactly what he meant at the end when he said "%*$! YOU IF YOU CAN'T TAKE A JOKE"!! my favorite part of his act was "it's not what they call you, but what YOU answer to". i personally am nappy headed with braids but i ain't no ho or whore, and i'm proud to be/or not be both--for they're MY CHOICES. i refuse to bear the burdens of ALL AFRICANS OR ALL WOMEN because i don't agree with how ALL of them live their lives. but i believe they're entitled to make their own decisions even the people getting paid appearing in videos on BET. YUK AND I'M OFFENDED BY THAT PORTRAYL OF AFRICAN WOMEN for sure and they're doing it to themselves!!! i really feel that it's all about what you like personally. i didn't watch his tv shows for the same reason i don't listen to rap music---it makes my head hurt like a migraine!!!
