Comment: The saddest part of this whole ordeal is just what President Diack stated, she probably could have won those medals WITHOUT THE ROIDS! That's what should be killing her right now, the fact that like he said, she could have been an "HONEST CHAMPION." Anyway, I agree she should move forward, but I think she should (and I know she will) marinate on the root cause of this and probably a lot of her problems in general--a lack of integrity. For someone to so easily and adamantly run with a lie--did you see those press conferences she held a while back proclaiming how she used her "God-given talent" and whatnot? I mean wow--there's definitely some character problems. If I were advising her, I'd tell her to get spiritual counseling immediately and long term to try to find her way back to her truth. Homegirl is so lost right now...

Comment: This brings back pangs of hurt and bad memories. Probably, one of the first athletes to die from steroids happened back in the early 70's. My college classmate J. W. got these 'vitamins' from the son of a white Colorado physician. He played great in the NFL for two or more seasons then the steroids began to kill him. My buddy who was at his bedside while he was dying said how angry he was. He turned toward the wall not to see anyone's face before he died. Marion you have no where to go but up!! Nobody can judge you because nobody can raise the dead or part the Red Sea.(Medri Bahri)

Comment: Any of these sports figures using steroids deserves the shame that comes to them. #1 if they are so into their bodies the last thing they would want to use is steroids! #2 Many of them show up for children's events and charities promoting a lie. #3 anyone into their body investigates substances before using them. Vitamins are natural occuring substances that make up blood and organs and keep them running smoothly where steroids are additives that eventually destroy the body. I do wish Ms. Jones the best, but have no sympathy for the shame she and others have brought on themselves.

Comment: History is repeating its self once again. We were great musical entertainers, businessmen, teachers, etc., and along came drugs that destroyed our people. We are great athlete's making millions of dollars , along came drugs and we are destroying our bodies and minds again. I remember this guy in high school that could run track like a bat out of hell. He took speed (a drug in the 60's) as a teenager. I saw him about ten years later and he couldn't walk, let along run. We are a gifted people that are being destroyed on a daily bases with the help of ourself and others.Look at who is given our people the drugs "yt". WAKE UP PEOPLE, THE REAL GAME IS OUR SURVIVAL AS A PEOPLE.

Comment: Through it all, she has a reserved grace about her rather than the garden-variety shouting and lack of contrition that I'm sure we'd get from other "OLDER" YOUTHS unfortunate enough to be in similar shoes, well, make that "spikes" in this case. Not as an act of defense, but as a measure of understanding, I can say on Marion's behalf that track is hard on the body. Which is no excuse at all. If God blessed you with a Lexus for a body the rest of your glory would only come when you properly worked that body. But as KHUFU alludes to, there is a WHOLESALE lack of hard work ethic in these GEN-somethin'-or-'nother's genes. Definitely not like it used to be. Too many darn options out there, I guess. What I believe Marion did was see track as the business that it became. There was a time when people thought you were an absolute fool for running track. The common theme was, "It don't pay." And it didn't. Except on the rare occasion when some benefactor took up your cause. Don't get it wrong, people used to GET PAID under the table, now. Elite athletes in first place ONLY, to be perfectly clear. Number 2 was as good as Number 2222222222. But by the time Carl Lewis got through being the conductor on the cash gravy train during his golden era in the early-to-late 80s, a system "had done growed up 'round it." Marion pimped her own body for cash, bottom line. But hey, some gals do it everyday. And so do a whole helluva lot of boys and bois and boyz.

Comment: Uh, BOOT, taken over time most steroidals either assist in the rapid build-up of beneficial muscle tissue or assist in the rapid detioration of certain acids, enzymes, etc. Your recovery time from a workout is also physiologically flashed back to your days of youth. Remember how quick it was to recover from a hangover at 19 in comparison to say, 39? Remember how easy it was to spring out of bed at 14 compared to say, 41? You acquire the ability to carry a heavier workload. Power is relative. The more you get, the more you have. The more you workout, the more you can subjugate your competition.

Comment: Excellent point ClosetNerdGril about Belicheck and the Patriots. I was thinking about the contrast of the backlash he and Vick have received, like night and day...and it could easily be argued that Belichek's crime warranted much more backlash in terms of the NFL than did Vick's. I have a feeling that whole cheating story is not over yet. It's flown under the radar thus far, but the more people start to examine it, I think the Patriots and the NFL are going to have to come with a lot more than a damn fine. The inequity in the punishment is just too glaring. We'll see...

That was a bad example using the Pats. Lord knows I hate THEM WITH A PASSION (Raider fan) but the NFL doesn't work like that if a player/team is caught cheating. The NFL doesn't forfeit wins/championships.

Comment: TGen- I agree with you 100%. What Belicheat did had a DIRECT impact on the integrity of the game. What Vick did what off the field of play. We can only hope that Bill and the Pats get their just due, and SOON. I agree with the few sports casters who had the guts to say it that Bill should havew been suspended for AT LEAST 8 games. The fact that Goddell announced that he would be collecting and viewing all the video tapes and documents in the Pats organization was a JOKE!!!! I mean, he telegraphed his intentions. So of course there was time to shred and doctor evidence. *sucking teeth and rolling eyes.*

If anything, he should be held MORE accountable because he is a COACH, and is supposed to set an example for the players and be above reproach. And I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that if Lovey Smith, Romeo Crennell, Tony Dungy or Denny Green had been caught cheating, they would be riding the pine right now....

Comment: I don't understand why people are always so outraged about steriod use. You are reacting as though sports are all about the game, being the best that you can be, you know sportsmenship. That may have been true 30 years ago and maybe for highschool sports. Sports today is about the dollar, period, and when you are talking about millions of dollars people will do whatever they need to get the money. On top of the money, we the public are forever wanting people to run faster, get stronger, up their game in order to show us that they deserve the dollars we give them. For many of athletes the risk of disgrace and maybe a sligtly shorter lifespan is worth the risk to get the money. I bet what Marion is really mad about is the fact the she's messed up her money. Its one thing to be disgraced, but another to be disgraced and broke. If she had a few mill in the bank she would probably be like "here take your damn metals, I'm set"

Comment: I for one agree with what someone said earlier...WE ALL have secrets or things we wouldn't want others to know about! My question is....Why this came up AFTER ALL THESE YEARS?? Why would those who KNEW BACK THEN NOT say anything until now!!?? We should ask...why say ANYTHING now?? Surely, this isn't just a case of "conscience"! I bet there's more to this than just somebody wanting to "come clean"! Also, someone else said something about her "lack of self confidence"...Well, A LOT of people do A LOT OF THINGS & don't get caught because THIER people,friends,etc...DON'T SNITCH!! It has nothing to do with confidence...It's about leveling the playing field! OTHERS do the same thing & NOBODY says ANYTHING!! NOT that two wrongs make a right...But, If others are doing it,& EVERYONE KNOWS IT & THEY don't get caught,I think it's easy to be under the "illusion of INCLUSION"! THAT'S the lesson WE BLACK PEOPLE HAVE TO LEARN!!....WE can't do what THEY DO! They may "say" it's a free country but....It ain't THAT free!!!

Comment: >Testic- I'm not sugarcoating anything. Marion was wrong, period. She not only messed up her legacy, she tainted the medals of her relay teammates. And if you recall, I said they need to kick her azz for that. (I sure would want to.) I know the NFL does things differently, but I reserve the right to state how I think they should do things. I am pointing out that in sports in general, in the grand scheme of things with athletes being "outed" for wrong-doing, it's clearly a case of black and white. Black athletes almost always get slammed harder for the same offenses as white athletes, who get treated much more leniently. I'm positive that there are white athletes in track and every other sport who do 'roids, and I am positive that if they were caught their punishment would not be as severe. Now I'm the first one to say that in order to avoid this unequal justice, black athletes just need to do stay out of trouble and keep their noses clean, and do it for the sake of doing the right thing, not just for fear of getting caught. But when some of us do mess up, we tend to get treated more harshly. In the case of Belicheat, I stand by my statement that if a black coach had done the same thing the punishment would have been more severe.

So the question is, if they're all on something, isn't Marion the champion anyway? I'd like to go with that. Hey, I'm still very much a fan. She says she didn't know that her manager was giving it to her and I believe her. She just got a little scared when they asked her about it and probably realized at that point what was really going down, but I think she is a champion nonetheless, and it definitely appears that she is remorseful for it all. I wish her the best.

Comment: No doubt I am way late on this commentary but I am appauled at some of these comments. As soon as a black person gets caught for doing something that is clearly wrong we want to holler "YT" and "we're being targeted" or "singled out". Well guess what people, they couldn't single us out or target us if our closets were spotless or damn near. What Marion Jones did was wrong. This is not a black & white issue, it is a right and wrong issue. She knew what she was doing was wrong but thought she could get away with it. I don't buy that b/s flaxseed oil story or any of it. How weak a mind to think that would some how excuse her. I was disgusted. People need to learn to take full responsibility for their actions and endure the consequences. This is why black people are their own worst enemy - eff up, get caught, blame everybody else. I'm not saying black people are the only ones who do this but I am not concerned about the others. People, we got to do better!
