Comment: His comments are a stretch. I don't think there are any precedents out there that I know of that people that listen to hip hop don't commit suicide but he there are drive by shootings, he may be onto something. As far as what he said about guns and stuff in the music, he is right it is all about dope, guns, money and ho's. I don't think it is racist, just far fetched opinions.

Name: nightshift
Comment: Too much of what he said is true. Sad isn't it?

Name: g888
Comment: Bigfriend,I like you agree with parts of what he said, and the troubling thing is that some of what he said has some validity to it,today things are so different, and it's not about old school vs.new because values are enduring,it's the lack of respect, and the way life is undervalued,in this and other forums it's like we repeat ourselves over and over, and yet our love and support for each other in OUR community continues to diminish with the exception of the segment that continues to seek something better, and as they say are the ones who really keep hope alive

Comment: Rap, if that is a qualified %*$essment, isn't the only thing that was wrong here - plenty of blame to go around. This boy was mentally disturbed so how did someone not pay enough attention for him to have amassed such a huge cache of weapons? Again, it was in their faces and they did nothing so rap is the real culprit!

Name: musbdherbs
Comment: So now blame let's hip-hop for all school shootings. You may as well. I mean the violence and promotion of firearms is so pervasive in Hhop that is bound to influence lil white to go shoot up schools. I mean wasn't the columbine crew listening to NWA at the time they shot up colorado. I heard that the Vtech shooter (asian) was listening to a 50-cent mixtape.

Name: TGen
Comment: This is confusing. How did he go from "reading the student was a fan of rocker Marilyn Manson" to "insinuating that hip hop may have influenced Coon to launch his azzault?" I think the writer misinterpreted that part. At any rate, I disagree with most of the comments. I find this guy's tone subtely racist. I think there is an underlying attitude of "look at them, they just kill for the fun of it." I think this guy is extremely ignorant to imply that young folks who listen to hip-hop don't get depressed enough to kill themselves, as if they are some kind of monsters or something. The ignorance is that most of the people who listen to trash rap are not like the subjects the rappers rap about, many are young kids (both good and poor students) who use the rap as a form of rebellion...they're not monsters like this guy is implying. I just wish ignorant White folk, borderline racists, aka "conservatives" would keep their damn mouths closed about Black folks. All of them are not bad people, but beware, anytime you read about someone from "FoxNews" or a "conservative radio host," you know anything he/she says about Black folks is not coming from a place of love or sincerity, but rather a place of faux superiority. The reality is there is NO reason for this idiot to have even brought up hip-hop, especially after he read that the shooter was a White Marilyn Manson fan. He did so to obfuscate and I see some folk fell for his okey-doke. *Sigh*

Name: AariesLegend
Comment: Well he's right isn't he? I mean besides the random african american who suffers from a mental breakdown, when was the last time a african american shot someone and then turned the gun on themselves? I also agree with the comments he said about hip hop containing constant gun remarks. If this guy was black his comments would be taken as a move for change within the hip hop community. Since he is white, we scream racism. It just doesn't make any sense.

Name: NYCsoul
Comment: Can we also blame Italian gangstas for influencing the mind of some of these rappers? I mean, some of them tag themselves after mafia or drug kingpins. The last time I checked, the mafia didn't kill themselves either whenever they went to kill somebody. He is correct about the prevalence of gun talk in rap, but to blame this kid's suicide(who actually was fan of Marilyn Manson, who talks about death in his music) is stretching it.

Name: Debonair
Comment: Another FOX anchor grasping for straws...Blame the kid's parents for lack of parenting as that this kid's older brother was a f*ck up,too. Gibson is trying to stir the pot looking for attention. He's a loser and that's that.Moving on, now......

Name: TGen
Comment: AariesLegend, I suggest you re-read the article. It clearly states that the student was a "rock" fan and listened to Marilyn Manson. Logic would follow that if any entertainment was responsible for his behavior, it would be ROCK not rap. One has to ask then, what was the purpose of this Gibson guy bringing up hip-hop when, by all accounts, the student was more a fan of ROCK? Hmmmm. I'm the FIRST one to hold trash rap accountable for a lot of ills throughout our community. But in this case, it is not a factor and this guy should be called out for the misplaced blame.

Name: khufu
Comment: LOL BIGFRIEND is an idiot...

Name: khufu
Comment: HIP HOPPERS...hmmm...more white kids are fans and consumers of Hip Hop music than Black!!! so what does that fact do to his theory and all those on her who say he's right about THAT?

Name: khufu
Comment: Brilliant point NYC SOUL.. and the earliest organized street gangs in America were in NY and they were Irish and Italian prior to the establishment of the Cosa Nostra... so let's lay some historical blame and attribution.... that's why white folks dont like to bring up history..it can be used a a truth weapon against them

Name: FiveMore
Comment: Who did Gibson/Faux blame for the Asian guy in Va.Tech incident?Did he blame Maos Communist China, or the psychotic Korean dictator? Why didn't he blame Imus or somebody else? The attacks on the "entire" genre of Hip Hop seem disengenious and biased to a fault? These guys need to be honest about things, but I know they can not and will not.Why ask the question why?You will not get an honest answer.hump

Name: khufu
Comment: again people.. they use the strategy of DIVERSION.... Rock music should be the music and sub-cultural phenom on attack here...how and why did he turn it around and make it about Black folks and hip hoppers... see they know when they do that people like BIGFRIEND will pick it up and do what they do........

Name: musbdherbs
Comment: TGen..I wondered the same thing about the writer's misinterpretation. What's crazy to me about Gibson's remark is that he, thanks to the help of blacks, attempts to make his point while insulting us at the same time. He's attacking a genre which has never been found complicit in white folks shooting up schools. As a result, hhop is the root cause of yet another evil. Has there been a ban on Manson-type music? You know the really gothic, suicidal, cult'sh music. The one that most of these columbiner's listen to. Has there been a ban?

Name: musbdherbs
Comment: forget ban...has there been a nationwide discussion on the influence of that style of music?

Name: khufu
Comment: Rock Music especially the listed genres have always promoted rage, violence, rebellion, anarchy, disrespect and/or anti-authority..... Hard rock and heavy metal Punk rock Post-punk Glam metal (Hair metal) Grunge Nu metal Acid Rock

Name: khufu
Comment: brilliant point MUSB...see that's what Dyson, Sharpton, etc need to start doing as a counter-strategy..... start discussing the history of white music (Rock, not Rock and Roll) and the negative influence of the music... while being a counter-strategy that would truly be progressive....

Name: Southernbelle
Comment: "That evil negro music hidden under the guise of hip hop has caused our sweet blond haired blue eyed youth to go astray and commit unthinkable crimes. It's all hip hop's fault and the evil hip hoppers are to blame (pointing finger)." If he would have lived he would have gotten off with this excuse. Forget the fact that his brother was a skin head. Go figure.

Name: MER82
Comment: This is the most useless network in all of TV land, and that is saying a lot with all of the trash on TV these days. Incredible how this idiot goes from mental illness and associating it with music, in this case ROCK music and then turning the whole story on its head to discuss Hip Hop music which had NOTHING TO DO WITH THE STORY OR THE SITUATION AT THAT SCHOOL. Instead of discussing what is wrong in our school systems, the lack of funds for counseling/support structures and the like. If this isn't typical white boy propaganda, I don't know what is, he was just mad when he found out it was a white student who shot up folk at a black school--it threw his entire argument down the toilet, so he had to come up with some kind of way to bring it back. Typical sheep like Bigfriend fall in line...

Name: katgrrrl
Comment: I'm with you on that one Debonair. Blame that boy's parents. How you gonna blame some music? That excuse makes me sick. Why not blame the neighbor's dog? It worked for the Son of Sam. Metallica had an album in the 80's called "Kill 'em All." Blame Metallica, especially considering the kid listened to rock music. This is workin' my nerves. We're under attack right now. Nooses popping up everywhere. It it ain't nooses, it's racial slurs. I know most rap lyrics are bad and ain't about nothin', but look at all the kids who listen to it who DON'T go shootin' up everybody. Not goin' for the okie doke. Not this time.

Name: katgrrrl
Comment: KHUFU: Thank you! DIVERSION! Smoke and mirrors! Seriously, the kid's white and some ppl still have a hard time accepting that white can actually be bad; that white can actually be negative. Noooo, the kid's white. The music's white... No! How could this be? Whats that? Among all the rock music was a rap song! F***in' A! Now we know what made that pure, beautiful white child go bananas! Mr. Paul Mooney said it best: 1-800-Blame-A-Ni**er!

Name: TesticAl
Comment: Khufu, more white kids are fans and consumers of hip hop music than black kids? I disagree with the "fan" part but I agree with you on the "consumer" part.

Name: DarkBerry
Comment: Wow, I am glad he has insight into the mind of a criminal of any race! It is good to have some one like him around to tell us what is going on!

Name: khufu
Comment: TESTICAL..I equate fan with consumer...but I get your point....

Name: DarkBerry
Comment: Oh yeah, and I am a little older than the hip hop audience of today but I was around when hip hop 1st started to really take off. I was a big fan of gangsta rap but amazingly, I never have owned a gun or shot or robed anyone. In fact, I have never been arrested or been a stripper or a prostitute. I have never been in a fight. Please stop maiking excuses for poor parenting. IF some of these SO CALLED parents started the minute their children were born with molding them intl productive upstanding people, it would not matter what kind of music they listened to or what type of movies they watched or video games they played. They would know that all of these things are for entertainment only and need to be taken as such. IF all of these rappers are so tuff, then why aren't they still living in the projects instead of high in the Hollyweird hills? Why are they pushing clothes and energy drinks instead of standing on the street corners"keeping it real". No instead, they are singing and dancing into a camera on a set and cashing checks that we have issued by buying their albums and paying to see there movies. The only way to stop this type of entertainment, is to hit them in the pockets. Only buy music that does not juse the N word or call women out of their name. See who is left standing when no one is buying that mess, see who is able to turn their rap skills into something else and really talk about something that matters.

Comment: DARKBERRY LOL If you re talking about me..LOL It's amazing what education reading enlightenment and the gift of revelation can do to a mere mortal human being

Comment: Khufu, understood.

Comment: @ khufu - I was not directing my comments towards anyone in particular, just stating my opinion in general. But yes, reading is fundamental.

Name: katgrrrl
Comment: Khufu! How could you think DarkBerry's comment was about you!? Has nadda to do with ya, bro. :) <> That comment is on the money DarkBerry!

Name: sdedee
Comment: I agree the parents should be checked out, look at the teen here in PA that Mom bought him guns. In addition, M. Manson has a song talking about " We are disposable teens" That may give you a clue as to why some of these "rockers" off themselves besides the fact of mental illness.

Name: khufu
Comment: got ya darkberry....
