Comment: Oprah i commend what your doing with the school and being so procative with this. i just have one serious question...are you gonna help your own to or do american children not matter as much to you. (im being serious)

Name: goodnplenty1957
Comment: agree NueNue..i spend many of days at a time in Johannesburg and the crime rate is very high, especially against young black women. Oprah went down there because HER NAME in on that project there. I know she made alot of donations etc to alot of HBCU's and i commend her immensely, but isnt there a saying, TAKE CARE OF YOUR OWN HOME FIRST? what about the stuff going on in our schools here?

Name: NueNue
Comment: Its hurtful to see all these people with money and power helping everyone but americans. i would like to call it the Bush Syndrom. We dont see the struggle with our people untill its to late or its to gone. We have an obligation to help ourselves before we can help others.

Comment: Oh and wasn't it at the start of the school when Oprah said that she would not open a school in Chicago because "all the children were concerned with was bling bling?" Oprah could have easily started a leadership program in Chicago where junior high and high school students could give back to the community while earning future credit (or grants) for college. Giving American students "the finger" comes at a price, and it appears that Oprah is learning the hard way that South Africa is as complex as America is.

Comment: While I agree with you all, and this is not a fan talking but, Big O can put her money where she wants. How many of us are taking "our" money to those koreans to buy hair? Now that pi$$es me off. I've been there too, buying stuff (don't need hair),'cause it's close to home. But 99% I go to a minority owned "Sally's"

Name: huey
Comment: in defense of "o", she answered that in an interview with diane sawyer. diane asked her "why not do that here" and oprah stated that here in the united states children have and oppourtunity, they have schools, not the best of schools in all cases but they have schools, if you dont go to school here in america people will come looking for you, and ask why have you not come to school today. in africa that is not the case, they have to have uniforms to even go get into school but they are often too poor to purchase one. so she opened the school to give them an oppourtunity that our children already have her. i agree with oprah, it is a good thing she is doing. and maybe she will open a school here one day. right now afican is where here calling is. tiger woods has built a fabulous school for underprevilage children. its not as if people of color are all turning their backs.

Comment: DON'T BE DISTRACTED and fall into the media's trap to DIVIDE AND CONQUER!! It's easier to focus on what others "supposedly" are not doing rather than "What could I be doing?" How can I contribute" O HAS made significant donations to HBCUs and programs around THIS country. WE NEED to question what the large companies headquartered in the community are doing and put HEAVY PRESSURE on them to be active participants instead of using up our resources but giving nothing back. A One time drop of dough in the barrell means nothing to me and certainly nothing to a community if the people making it aren't actively engaged. Don't call O to task, call the supermarkets, Corp., Home Depot/Lowe's, banks, large retailers and make them step up to the plate. They're the ones TAKING your dollars DAILY.

Comment: I2I with nightshift. Cracks me up when folk go up in arms about where a person of means chooses to spend her money, but won't be mindful of where they spend their precious, hard-earned dollars. Buy from the local korean hair store because it's cheaper even though they're deliberately and underhandedly putting a lot of black hair companies out of business. Buy from Borders and Books a Million, but won't support the local black bookstore. Oh black people, my people.

Name: Merd325
Comment: Agree w/ Huey & ChocolateBrownGal: And let's discuss the children in America that have a nice opportunity to accomplish things...I personally have a neighbor who sent her son to a nice charter school and her son is very smart and he graduated....guess what he's doing? I see him on the corner any given day selling drugs, oh, and he has a gun...And he doesn't have to sell these drugs. There are plenty of jobs in Philadelphia.

Comment: thank God that Oprah has enough sense and understanding to know that she is African as much as she is American....maybe she realizes that she is MORE African nonetheless thank God that she realizes that she has an obligation and committment to Africa in the ways that Indians, Jews, Chinese etc know that they have connections and obligations to their ancestral countries (ALthough there really is no real ancestral connection between European jews and Palestine...that's another story)

Comment: CBG> ITA. Isn't always we take each other to task for we allegedly DON'T do but don't apply that standard to folks that have been robbing us blind for decades? Your post was right on point!

Comment: Additionally, those African children are our children as well. I am glad that Oprah proudly embraces her Africaness and puts her money behind it! I am glad that she has healed herself (if she was ever suffering from it)of the self-denial and self-hatred that the majority of African Americans suffer from regarding the country from which their great, great or great, great, great grandparents came from.... thank God that Oprah knows her Africaness and is proud of it to the extent that in addition to investing some of HER money into healing some of the plights of African-Americans she also invests some of HER money into healing some of the plights of Africans.....the land of her foreparents birth....

Name: FreakyQue2U
Comment: From the millions she's given to HBCU's, to the building of sixty homes in New Orleans (Angel Avenue)after Katrina, not to mention this school in South Africa, Oprah has been putting her money where her mouth is for a long time!! Where are the rest of the "Oprahs" in the entertainment and sports industries?? And why should she keep investing her money in this 21st century soul-less Babylon?? Keep on being a blessing Oprah!! Roo!!

Name: mayday
Comment: Say it again ChocolateBrownGirl. I can't believe that people are still debating over what Oprah should do with her money. Her connection to the Motherland is strong and that is beautiful. Oprah is so right when she says that every child in the States is afforded an opportunity to go to school. Granted, we have some failing school systems especially in the Inner City and that should be addressed but nonetheless children can still go to school and if they have strong parents behind them they can excel even in a school that is doing poorly. Go O!

Just beautiful! <> I ain't mad at Okrah. She explained why did didn't build the school here. Not all, but too many of our kids squander opportunities. Merd325's comment (scroll up n' check it out if ya missed it) is proof of that.

Name: kreemykarmell
Comment: Yes, it is a good thing that she wanted to help Africa, but we all know damned well that everyone in America does NOT have those opportunities. The same way they can't afford a uniform over there, parents can't afford a uniform over here. Maybe if she would get out of her comfort zone and actually talk to the people who don't have, and try very hard, she'd realize that people are suffering everyday in America. And whoop-di-doo, giving money to an hbcu is great, however, i'm sure a school in chicago that's falling apart could use the money a whole lot more. HBCU's already have people giving them money. and before someone else says "well, what are YOU doing" yes, i do support black owned businesses, and even I give to schools & causes in my area. And i'm 25 with virtually no money, but at least the little I have can make a differene, even if it helps one kid buy their books for college, I know they left the projects HERE and can know afford the books to pass their classes. My people my people. I wish everyone would just wake up, and help the people you can see first. The ones right in front of you that get ignored because everyone swears they have all these opportunities. There's not one African in this country going, we should help the kids here. No, they send their money back home cause they know to help at home first.

Comment: Kreemykarmell, at the end of the day American children have the opportunities the youth in Africa just don't have right now. I support Oprah in her efforts and think she's doing a wonderful thing. In this life not everyone will agree with your choices - especially if you're celebrated, respected, rich and black! Oprah said it best - and yes I am paraphrasing - "I don't give a shyt what y'all think!"

Comment: "Oprah gives Morehouse $5 million Black Enterprise, June, 2004 by Carolyn M. Brown 'Billionaire media mogul Oprah Winfrey has given Morehouse College a $5 million donation to fund scholarships. The gift brings Winfrey's contributions to the Atlanta school to a total of $12 million, making her its largest individual donor, according to Morehouse spokeswoman Elise Durham. Winfrey also became the first recipient of Morehouse's Candle for Lifetime Achievement in Humanitarian Service award.'" “Oprah has given considerable time and money to her numerous philanthropic ventures as well, focusing especially on funding and supporting educational initiatives and those who help others in their communities. Along with many awards for achievements in entertainment, Oprah has won great recognition for her humanitarian efforts.” (< --- from FemBio.org). I'm sure there are other contributions that have received no publicity. But, later for that. Let's bash her for what she hasn't done! Ooooh, how dare Oprah think she has any right to decide what to do with her own money! To the guillotine!!!!!!!!! Off with her head!

Comment: To be clear, in spite of the problems with the public school system, this is the only country where we can get a free education in the public schools. Everywhere else in the world people have to pay to go to school. If you don't have money to buy a uniform, it's like not having money for tuition. We take education for granted here and they don't. Oprah asked children in the public schools here what she could do for them and they asked for THINGS...she asked the children in South Africa and they asked to go to school.

Comment: The sad reality is there are SO MANY gaps and holes in our community. Oprah, Tyler, Tiger, Cosby and no other individual can be expected to help improve every gap. I commend anyone (famous or not) who does SOMETHING for our people. It is wasted energy to criticize Oprah or anyone else for not targeting a certain locale or issue. When you see a gap that isn't being addressed, why don't YOU rally your energy and resources for that cause? Why is it Oprah's or Bill's responsibility?

Name: amethyst
Comment: I appreciate the comments about holding our elected officials accountable. Our schools are suffering because of unequal resources being provided by our governments, and lackadaisacal parents. I also agree with the posters who make the point that ANY child in these Neu-Nited States can attend a school and apply herself. And uniforms aren't required. Poor parents can make the best of what is available and push their kids to excel at whatever schools they attend. Black folks have been making miracles out of scraps for centuries. Stop whining and spend time researching local resources to help your child succeed (tutoring, summer enrichment programs, mentoring programs, sports leagues, etc.). Many resources are FREE or inexpensive. If you want it bad enough you'll figure out how to get it. "When there's a will, there's a way)

Comment: Also, Oprah did what few American executives usually do: she took the accusations seriously and personally went to address them immediately. How many of us have seen complaints on the job get ignored, or HR and others take a long time to investigate them?

Name: katgrrrl
Comment: Khufu: LOL. Nah, my intentions weren't to shut anyone up. I just wanted to provide some info. Even as other posters have mentioned, Oprah DOES to stuff over here; she has and will no doubt continue to do so. Oprah's very, VERY blessed and she knows that the only way to keep the blessings is to share the blessings. Not every single thing she does gets publicized. But, Oprah IS doin'. But when people wanna hate, they'll find something...anything...even if it ain't true, to say about their target. I don't care if it's a strand of hair out of place or a tiny piece of lettuce in someone's teeth, they 'gon find something.

HBCU's already have people giving them money. Tell that to the Morris Brown Community. Oh yeah, that's right...it doesn't exist anymore. The truth is that HBCUs are in DIRE NEED of contributions. Consider this... More than 40 percent of all African American physicians, 50 percent of all African American dentists and pharmacists and more than 60 percent of all African American veterinarians graduated from just 12 HBCU professional schools awarding degrees in the health professions. Additionally, the June 2004 publication of Black issues in Higher Education revealed that of the nation’s top 10 universities awarding degrees to African Americans at the baccalaureate degree level, HBCUs dominated the rankings, with seven or more of these institutions graduating more African Americans in engineering, mathematics, biological and biomedical sciences, physical sciences, health professions, agriculture and psychology. So kreemy...those black owned businesses you support, the black professionals you support (doctors, lawyers, etc.)most likely were educated at or have some ties to HBCUs. Without them, our pipeline for advancement is severely crippled. And FYI, alot of our HBCUs are also falling apart. I am not saying HBCUs are more important, because as you know, you can't build a good house on a broken foundation, but we cannot afford to say where we need to put our resources in order to educate our children. RESOURCES ARE NEEDED EVERYWHERE. And not only that, we need to pursue more advanced degrees in the sciences and technology. Okay, I'm off my high horse.

Comment: Ok I hardly EVER post here but I have heard some good things here and some bad things. I am an educator and I have to say that some of the kids today are some of the most UNGRATEFUL jokers I have seen in my LIFE! They are not like us...working hard to make mom and ad proud..or to get the money...whatever the motivation was...it worked. These kids come to school to get an education...a FREE education....and WON'T GET IT!!! I have a hard time getting elementary kids to learn anything. Kids in Africa....if they are lucky enough to get an education...it surely isn't free! I applaud Oprah for giving kids who would not even have had an education a chance. I would rather spend my money on a child who desperately wants to learn than spend it on some kid that comes to school for lunch and gym. I am by no means saying that ALL children here are like that but a LOT of them are. I hear conversations about who is cute from a kid that can't read or write a paragraph....and that's in 4th grade. <getting off my soapbox now> :-)

Comment: I think the posters making the point that Oprah could be helping more in American were put off by the comment she made as to why she did NOT locate the school in American. She made it seem as if American children were not worthy, when (although someone should not question how you chose to spend your money) a better comment would have been that she helps and continues to help wherever she sees the greatest need. She made it seem as if ALL children in American would be too ungrateful. IMO>KREEMYKARMELL is not hating in her comments, but simply the expectation that you take care of home first. Katgrrl> Thank you from providing the stats for the HBCU, it reminds us that Oprah is taking care of home as well in spite of her comments. Guess the bottomline is Oprah can chose what she does with her money, just as well as we can, so perhaps we should think about what we can do to contribute to our own communities (maybe Oprah and other majorly wealthy people of color will see what we're doing and contribute as well)

Blacks were required to show ID in there own country. If Oprah chose to give more help to her people who reside in Africa I say more power to her. She does a lot here also, but as usual there are some who actually believe that she should be told what to do with the money she made. Jess summed it up best. Get over the nonsense and be glad that she is giving back to her people istead of giving it back to yt like so many of our people seem to do without all this outrage about where they spend their money. Comment: CBG, Thanks for taking the words out of mouth! Oprah can do whatever the hell Oprah wants to do with her money! Oprah should NOT be held to a higher standard than the rest of us. If it wasn't for the fact that most negros spend more of their income on disposable goods by ratio than any other demographic, the retail and automobile industry would be in serious trouble. And for the record, the money that Oprah has invested in her S. African academy is only a small fraction of the amount of money that's already being spent on school systems like Washington, DC. More money is spent per student in DC than any other school district in the country with the worse results. It's not money that's going to make a difference in the US, it's more parent involvement and increased attention. It goes without saying that schools in poor rural and southern areas are in desparate needs of more resources and better teachers; however, that is no excuse for not going to school. It does matter how bad the school, take advantage of the opportunity. I bet the same folks complaining about Oprah's money, have kids who aren't attending school on regular basis if at all.

Comment: Well, I've changed my mind about a few things after reading most of your comments. I agree. Let Oprah spend her money OVER THERE. The students over here have it and do not use it. They don't deserve to be showed with another damn dime. Someone mentioned "academic excellence." I am a teacher, and I think before we begin to address "academic excellence," we need to address the issue of conventional behavior for the classroom. I took over another teacher's 7th-grade class yesterday. I pointed out to a student that the seating chart indicated she was not sitting in her seat. I asked her to sit in the seat indicated on the chart. She said, "I'm staying right here. I don't give a fvck what the paper says."

Comment: Oprah has done so much for all minorities and ethnic backgrounds in her charity work but....I think she may be spreading herself a bit thin. She has a reputation of being a very 'hands on' controlling person and maybe she has to be---but when you have a private school no matter what country it is --minors are at risk of predators of all kinds and you would think that parents (now do background checks on parent and aides in class rooms in State of CA. here) there at Oprah's school should have been screened more carefully--Who is the principal or person in charge of that school???
