Comment: CBG, yours is a labor of love . . . we can't figure out what EUR is up to other than mo money, mo money with its ads and such . . . Oprah is working really hard at getting across to people that this academic and social effort has its genesis in the spirit and her spirit will not be broken because there are people with opposite motives . . . the staff and the students need to understand that the effort succeeds because of their individual and collective actions

Comment: it's sad the way these students were treated. you think that an upscale school-no matter where it is-would have outstanding people working in it. then remember what O said right before the school opened--somthing like she didn't want to open this type of school here in the States because we (Black kids) wouldn't appreciate it like those over in Africa. that is true for a very, very small percentage of us Black and she shouldn't lump us all in one group. Holla!

Comment: Nicro878, I have to agree with O when she says that we here in America wouldn't appreciate it. Our culture confirms that perception over and over again everyday in the media, but that's a moot issue now. I think O did the right thing by apologizing and going over there to see what's up and taking control of the situation.

Comment: This is a disgrace. Some folks just aren't going to do right no matter where you put them because they don't believe that they (or anyone who looks like them) deserves a better life. And I'm tired of these damn pedophiles.

Comment: She must be devastated...after suffering years of abuse herself, to have to deal with this in her school where she promised to keep these girls safe. In spite of that, she stepped up, took responsibility and did not point fingers. SHE hired those people and she's taking responsibility for what happened. Bless you Oprah...my prayers are with you and those girls.

Comment: I hope they nail the perpetrator to the wall. She was probably jealous because her daughter/relative/friend's daughter wasn't accepted at the school. Apparently they don't have strict screening and criminal background checks in place in S. Africa. Hopefull Oprah will rectify that situation, at least where her school is concerned. I also like that she held the principal and other adminstrators responsible for trying to hide what was going on.

Comment: Closet, even with strict screening, some folks slip through the cracks. The number of people who have a sexual interest in children is off the charts and they aren't always easy to detect.
It is disgusting. I think crabs in the barrel has something to do with this, too.

Comment: Why is it always one stupid fock to make things bad for everybody? She did something no one else would ever entertain and that was to give those girls hope and some type of future and then you have this deranged stupid azz to ruin it for everybody...you know next time anyone that applies for a job with that school you can best believe will have to go through a very rigourous background check!

Comment: I just want to know what happened to us. I read a report about children as young as 5 and grandmothers as old as 72 being raped in the Congo. What happened to some people's sense of common decency? There used to be SOMETHING that we respected.

Comment: Hey gingerg
Believe me, there are many people who still have common decency. Unfortunately, such people are not newsworthy. Sometimes when we read so much about the foolishness in the world we forget about the goodness.

Comment: Pedophilia and incompetent teachers know no geographical or cultural boundaries. My only issue with Oprah is that she did over there what white folks do over here--played Mammmy. It's her money, her blessings and do with em as she's called, but to say that black american girls and black american adults are somehow inherently unappreciative of quality schooling when our school system which was meant to serve everyone was and continues to be screwed up by state, local and federal government, white flight and entrenched bias against black and poor then you turn around and go 9,000 miles and build a school because "they will appreciate more" (her words not mine)...
no child deserves to be molested, no child deserves inferior education, but hopefully this is a wake up call to Ms. Thing that her inverted White Man's burden trip needs to stop.
because if anyone thinks that Black American girls are not being molested right here, and inner city schools getting screwed no matter how much the parents try to get involved well...
let's just say, "when's the last time you saw Oprah cry over that?"

Comment: This is such BS! When *months* ago, one of the parents complained and went to the press because she wasn't allowed to see or even talk to her daughter, this mother was vilified by Op. She flippantly told the mother that she could "remove her daughter from the acadamy at any time she wished" God help her if this same child is one of the victims! Oprah was too smug when this mother complained and now she has to eat humble pie. She's not so flippant now...

Comment: Can someone please post a link to an interview that Oprah gave where she ACTUALLY said "I won't build a school in the states because black folks won't appreciate it" (as in not at all). Because I don't ever remember those words coming out of her mouth. "The girls in South Africa would appreciate the school MORE." Which is probably more aligned with what she would say. We have schools like that here in the states. There are even scholarships given to attend (like she has provided). So it was a good move on Oprah's part to build a school where it was NEEDED. Come on, people, you gotta see that.

Comment: I am a recently retired teacher and I can tell you that we ran background checks all teachers aides and parents helping out in the classrooms. Who is running this school? Why aren't they apologizing?
Public or Private schools require strong leadership to protect our minors--why was Oprah so lax in this--especially a school in another country????
|
|
|

Comment: Nonnie, How was Oprah lax? If this was this woman's first reported offense, she wouldn't have a record. Therefore, her background check would come up clean. Background checks are only efficient of finding prior offenses.
