Comment: Well, I have to plead guilty--not of buying a bootleg, but of watching one with someone who did, lol. Actually I didn't finish watching it but I will. Not saying I won't support it at the movies (even though I've heard it's kinda overhyped but what isn't? lol). Btw, I heard that the leak came from the top as in from a certain rapper/actor in the film. Don't know if I believe that, but I've heard that more than once. Hmmm...

Comment: Working in entertainment, I too am baffled by the quality copy of American Gangsta that's been on the streets for about two weeks now. Extremely rare for a Ridley Scott film. It's kind of like seeing a bootleg of a Frank Sinatra recording -- (you didn't is my point). This was also the topic of coversation with my friends last night. We were trying to figure out why -- is it a backlash for Tyler's success? Is there another film or studio that they (a competitor) is trying to undercut. Or is it just the topic in general and the fact that top actors are making this movie -- it's really baffling. I honestly don't believe any rapper in that movie had the access to have the copy that's circulating. Whoever did it it's coming from the production level. In any case -- this still is a movie that need a theather experience.

Comment: I don't do bootleg at all. It makes no sense to complain about black numbers in the industry and then sit down to watch a bootleg movie. I'll see it at the movies or on dvd. I have a sister in law that displays big braggadocio. She's into bling (but if you look closely some it is diamonique), expensive clothes and all things material. Brags about this extensive movie collection and when I see it there is not one legit movie in the bunch and she was showing about 400 at that point . . . and she keeps asking me why I think she's a fake and a phony!

Comment: LOL@McNasty! The owner of 400 movies and NOT ONE legit? Daaag! But just last night I was forwarded to a site that had no fancy login features or anything like that, with access to American Gangster, Saw IV, We Own the Night, Why Did I get Married, and other current movies in the theatres on there. I couldn't believe it. But like another poster mentioned, I just love the quality of the "official" dvd movies when they come out. Having said that, yes I have watched some bootleg flicks before. Never purchased any, but have watched and borrowed from friends.

Comment: I feel yall, yall are so right. But Luke_Cage, like the article states, these copies of American Gangster being floated around ARE quality pictures, no reins or scroll or anything. So while it is technically bootleg, it feels like a Blockbuster rental or something--which I admit makes this whole ordeal very suspicious. And Teigh, I agree, that was my point too. Even though word is TI was a source of the leak, I found that hard to believe and pointed out that that would mean he was taking money out of his OWN pocket! Um yeah okay, lol

Comment: We all know that this is a tactic to undermine the $$ that this movie was to garner. However, it is not over! WE ALL need to make sure we will go and see the movie. Give Denzel & Company love by going to the theaters and breaking the bank... Don't let them stop the accolades that it will receive.

Comment: TGen> even if it was TI (and I doubt it, he wouldn't be taking any money out of his pocket. The only people (or entities) who stand to loose with this kind of bootlegging is the director (Ridley Scott) and the leads (Denzel and Russell). They are more than likely the only ones who could have potentially signed a back end deal that would give them a piece of the box office. On another note what kills me about bootleg is that if you really like the actor, or director then why would you bootleg. Imagine if you went to your job and it was bootlegged? Folks would have a whole new perspective on it then...I think what really hurt this movie was when they allowed jay Z to hype this "inspired by" project. He got the streets involved in the hype for this movie in ways that TI never could. I just know Ridley Scott is scratching his head trying to figure out what the heck happened here and I wonder who if anyone of them has a backend deal. That's the real heart of this issue.

Comment: And I'm not saying Jay Z is responsible for the bootlegging of this film. What I am saying is that his inspired by project, which is not directly related to this movie -- got the streets way more interested in this film beyond the original marketing set up that the studio mapped out!

Comment: Mcnasty> he woud lose money if he had a backend deal because a back end deal gives you a portion of the box office revenue -- which has been chunked away because of all the bootleg copies. 40 mil is alot but you have to remember the IRS get's paid, the agent get's paid, the lawyer get's paid. There are many people who get a piece of that money. Denzel is paid don't get me wrong -- all I'm saying is anyone who has a back end deal on this film is losing money for every bootleg on the street. And the quality of the bootleg alone let's you know it was deliberate and an inside job.

Comment: I've been waiting for this movie all year!!! Come Friday I will be at the theater purchasing a ticket...I'm with you McNasty I don't do bootleg at all and I hate it when I go visit certain relatives and they brag about their movie collection and all the movies are bootleg (but they're good copies they always say), I have over 200 DVD's and nary a one is bootleg...

Comment: I saw a lady on the 2 train selling AG and others last Friday. If cops really want to help shut down bootlegging, they need to ride the subway duing rush hour. I agree that it is stealing from the artists and all that stuff, and I don't get into bootlegs or anything, but I understand why people do it. It costs damn near $50 for a family of 4 to go see a movie, then the $3 water and $6 popcorn. The movie industry has to take its share of the blame for bootlegging because the price structure is really out of control. But I agree that we should make an effort not to bootleg Black films, lest we end up with Soul Plane 6.

Comment: Isn't it amazing how far bootlegs travel? From the west coast all the way to the east coast. My friend has a copy of the movie. I saw the first 15 minutes and it was a clear copy just like my Dreamgirls bootleg. lol I'm not going to lie, I have a few bootleg movies but they are all crystal clear. I don't do the bootlegs where you can hear people in the background talking or people walking in front of the camera.

Comment: I walked into my friends house on Saturday and sat down and began watching a movie. I noticed Denzel and inquired which movie was this as I thought I had seen all his movies. She advised it was American Gangster. The picture quality was amazing, crisp and very clear. After she told me which movie it was I went back outside and did not watch it. I don't purchase bootleg DVD's and make it a point not to watch them especially when it has a blaque actor in it that has a major role. I would rather spend the money at the box office or purchase the legal dvd so that they get the proper earnings recorded for that. If this would have happened to any of TP's movies that he saw great earnings on the he would not be the movie success that he is and "Hollywhite" would not believe that there is power in the "blaque dollar".

Comment: I have a huge DVD collection (300+ movies) and out of that collection maybe 7 are bootleg.
Is it wrong to purchase bootleg? Yeah it is but sometimes it is more financially feasible for some than going to a movie that costs almost 12 bucks per adult, 6 to 7 bucks per kid plus snacks for u and the little monsters. If the movie sucks - you are out possibly 25 to 40 bucks. - If the bootleg is not a good copy - you're out only 5 and better luck next time.

Comment: Denzel, it was hard but I remained true to you and didn't purchase a bootlegged copy. I don't know what can be done to minimize this because the bootlegger's offer is so tempting. Five dollars on the street compared to 45-50 dollars to bring a family of four to the movies. This was a tough decision to make.

Comment: OK, so Sharpton, Baisden and others are calling for a black boycott this coming Friday (When OG comes out) to not buy anything. Who would be hurting Denzel's pocket the most? Bootleggers or the majority of us not going to the movies because we would be buying a movie theatre ticket on Friday?

To get him to clear his schedule and really do it this time he was given another 20 million. I don't know from back end deals but other than irs and his accountant the only other person with their hands on Denzel's dough is Denzel.

Comment: McNasty> and between the IRS, the accountant and the lawyer.(can't forget the lawyer -- that's who negotiates his deals), and I'm more than sure Denzel still has an agent so they get a cut too..how much of that 20 mil do you think is his after they got paid. The IRS get's about half. It's more money than you and I see but Denzel did not get to keep the whole kitty on either pay day.
