Comment: I think that would be great to recast and release on the big screen. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think Jennifer Hudson would be a great Sofia, for some reason I think she could pull that role off with no problems at all!

Comment: Look, the Broadway stage play in New York City with Fantasia and Elisabeth Withers was excellent, but I definitely don't want to see a movie of it. "...all my life I had to fight..."

Comment: Any way she can slice and dice it I guess. Make the money O! But it reminds me of the scene in Forrest Gump when Bubba list all the ways to cook shrimp; fried shrimp, coconut shrimp, barbequed shrimp, lemon shrimp....

Comment: Why? I think the original version is such a classic, why remake it. I enjoyed the play and I think it would be a better idea of just releasing the play to DVD.

Comment: This movie will go over just like Beloved. A big flop. I'm sorry but I just don't think this movie is a good idea.

Comment: Truth told, a lot of folks thought the broadway version was NOT a good idea, but look at what happened. One can never really tell. I, personally, love the play as well as the movie, but they both offer very different perspectives/insight to the same story which I find completely interesting. I think O should do it!

Comment: I can go either way on this one....I really loved the movie and I am going to see the play in April when it comes to Maryland. A lot of musicals do not do well on but you never know with Oprah.

Comment: >khufu - "it would be time for the books and the cable tv show"...you sound real foolish. It started out a book. Wow. - As for this idea, I didn't like the remake of Hairspray because the original was campy but perfect in its campiness. And, the original Color Purple was perfect in its poignancy. Why mess with that? I saw the play on Broadway last year and loved it but why take it to the big screen AGAIN? Making a movie musical weakens the story, in my opinion...

Comment: The musical has been such a hit on Broadway. In light of the success of Dreamgirls (despite how they released it), this might work. Then again, it may be too much of a good thing. Anyway, I love Alice Walker and The Color Purple is one of my favorite books. I remember reading it as a teen. Who would have ever thought of writing a book as a series of letters to God. Loved it.

Comment: Also, The Color Purple has struck a chord with people from all walks of life via Broadway and it would have a good crossover appeal in the theatres.
I still remember how the cast/movie was mistreated. There was so much emphasis on "Mister" and this notion of black male bashing. That man didn't/doesn't represent all black men and the women's story needed to be told.

Comment: Oprah: "And now audience, I have a surprise for you........" -- "YOU get some Color Purple!", "YOU get some Color Purple!", "YOU get some Color Purple!", "YOU get some Color Purple!", "YOU get some Color Purple!", and "YOU get some Color Purple!","You!", "You! and You Allllllllllllllll!" "WhooooHoooooooooooooooooooooo!" (audience goes crazy clapping and crying) LOL! ;)

Comment: If it is going to be done then I hope and PRAY that O will get the ORIGINAL stars. LaChanze, Renee Goldsberry, Felicia Fields, Elisabeth Withers, and even Lou Myers (Mr. Gaines from Different World). I saw the original cast (minus Renee) twice and loved it. Nothing against the current and future casts, of course.

There are ancillary rights and platforms to all intellectual property especially entertainment brands...
1) the pictorial book of behind the scenes on Broadway
2) the book about the stage production
3) the book of color purple song lyrics
4) the songbook (lyrics and chords)
5) the book focusing on each chracter and actor
6) Oprah' Color Purple which deals specifically with how and why she put the production together
dont be so visionless

Comment: It might even be intersting to talk to all the actors and actresses who played the characters in film and on stage
e.g
all the actresses who played Celie
all the actresses that played Shug
etc
etc

Comment: ONLY if it turns out better than the Broadway show. I saw the Broadway show before Fantasia joined the cast, and I think it could have been much better than it was. It was pretty mediocre for Broadway.
