Comment: They need to do this for New Orleans!

Comment: Why does the city need to lure black people back? If they do not want to live there let them live where they want. if they cannot afford it then they need to get better jobs. Maybe I missed something but what did San Fran "do" to black people that they need to make amends for? I lived in Daly City for about 3 years and my family still lives right outside of San Fran and they love it and I only have good memories. My family would not want to live right in the heart of the city due to traffic and no parking and all the other mess (crime) that goes with living in the city. Why they always trying to make a problem where there is none. Why not try to diversify Oakland and clean that place up- get some blacks out and put other colors in!

Comment: That last sentence sounded a little harsh- but its true. Diversify some of these all black areas and maybe the area will get cleaned up, less gangbanging, less crime, better living areas and schools, just a better way of life. Right now it seems in (some) all black areas a ugly circle with no way out except for those few who are truly motivated.

Comment: Bigfriend the last line in your first post is the reason they are working toward this Marshall plan. It's plainly stated in this article. In order to accomplish diversity they have to encourage black folk to move back to the area where rents and other costs soared for the reason they headed for the surrounding suburbs.

Comment: >Bigfriend, judging from the tone of the majority of your post you must be one of those folks who somehow thinks that racism is something that happened in the past and is no longer relevant. You could not be more wrong. I came to SF as a baby in 1961. Growing up I have seen many many changes in the city and how they impact AA. During WW2 the Japanese were displaced by black people after they were sent to the concentration camps. The Fillmore district was famouse for its arts and entertainment center. It was much like the Harlem Renisance. The Fillmore is now yuppified Starbucks. After the war there was a concerted effort to bring the Japanese back to SF. They now have what is called the Niomochi (sp) neighborhood AKA japantown. During the 70's After many Black people owned those beautiful victorian homes there was "urban renewal" that tore down those homes and displaced thousands of AA homeowners. In the 80's Public housing was torn down and fewer units were built. Again displacing thousands of AA. The Bayview is one of the last enclaves of Black people in SF. These people are owners of homes costing half a million plus but the area is plagued by violence. Those people are being displaced by Latinos. The so-called was part of a systematic effort to displace Black people in SF. This along with economic forces (ie high housing cost, job losses) have forced black poeple out of SF. What Amos Brown and other Ministers have done is buy property and converted into co-ops in order to retain black folks. To do this those same pastors have gotten in bed with some shady developers namely Lenar Corp. This is a huge mess that will have ramifications for black people across the country. People are tired of long communtes. Whites want to re-take the inner cities where black people reside.

Comment: San Franciso wants to do something that I think is honorable, that is diversify the City. The city is considered somewhat progressive and they don't want to be known as the place where Black people don't want to live. If White people were leaving the City in droves, believe me San Francisco would definately be trying to do something to bring them back. Even though the article was about Black people, it should be noted that San Francisco is also losing its population of families with children and they are working on ways to encorage more families to move and stay in the City.

Comment: Kofi> I understand what you are saying and I do realize that diversity is best everywhere rather than one race dominating. As far as racism goes I do not think it is in the past, but I do not think it is as prevelent now, especially with all the opportunities that a person has IF they take advantage of them. I do believe you (a person) cannot just sit back and blame everything on racism, like many love to do even when it has nothing to do with the situation. You are talking about the 70's and 80's when this stuff happened in the article- this is NOW. How is it that black people are being pushed out by these races including latinos as you say and but blacks cannot keep up and own thier own places? most latinos are not rich and many asians are not. But you know what they have in common? HARD WORK. Someone cannot take your place if you work hard, own your own place (not rent- then it is not yours), and do what you need to do and not just sit back and blame the MAN. It is survival of the fittest and if someone can afford a place that you cannot afford anymore or are not trying to, then whomever can afford it can live there. That is not racism. Should you get a special pass because of your color? Nooo. Whites want to retake the inner city where blacks reside. Who can afford it? Step up your game then and be able to afford it!
