Comment: wow congrats and I hope you win yo should have won a long time ago several times

Comment: Was "I Am Legend" too late to be in the lineup? UNBELIEVEABLE that Ruby Dee has NEVER been nominated for and Oscar?!!

Name: Train
Comment: What happened to The Great Debaters? That young lady should've been nominated for best actress and Denzel should've been nominated for director. Also Don Cheadle should've been nominated for Talk to Me. I won't be watching it anyway.

Comment: I knew Ruby Dee had the nom, and I love Laura Linney and Javier Bardem -- but too bad about "Great Debaters".

Name: Southernbelle
Comment: This is obviously an effort by the Oscar Committee to right a wrong for not nominating Ruby Dee many, many years ago. While it's admirable that the Ms Ruby can still act at 83 years of age she only had a few lines in the whole movie. The Oscars should have just GIVEN her a lifetime achievement award. Her achievements are bigger than an Oscar nom at this point.

Comment: WOW...first nomination....amazing. Congrats, Ms. Dee, you are long over due. I agree with you SOUTHERNBELLE.

Comment: Train, I'll bet "The Great Debaters" will be up there with "I Am Legend" NEXT year. There IS a cutoff date. I'm not sure of when it is though.

Name: Stephanie
Comment: This is so long over due for both her and the late great, Ossie Davis. The sad part is, he's not here to celebrate with her but I know his spirit will be with her. She better win damn it!

Name: Renegade
Comment: Grace, both of those films made the cut off date. They just were not nominated.

Name: McNasty
Comment: . . . . and that's the shame of it! With her whole body of work there is not another actress black or white that equals her talent or her range and they choose AG for her first nod. No matter - at least it got one cause Denzel was completely ignored. I hope that whatever their plan B is doesn't work because it's time to change the pool of folk that choose what's oscar worthy.

Comment: "Be glad, Walter Lee, i got a nominated for an oscar. i don't feel like wuppin anybody tonight!"

Comment: I saw American Gangster the first weekend it came out, I love Ruby Dee and we all know she is a phenomenal actress. But I don’t think she had enough screen time to earn a nomination. It seems that since the Oscars are going to be cold this year they’re going outside of “their” box. Or maybe the movies last year were so-so.

Comment: Bigchassie: lol! <> The Oscars lost some steam for me when Angela B%*$ett didn't win for "What's Love Got To Do With It"' not to mention Sam Jackson ("Pulp Fiction") losing to Martin (thanks for bein' in the biz for 600 years and not droppin' dead on the movie set witcha ol' azz!) Landau. Ms. Dee doesn't need their trophy. She's a legend. God Bless her. And STILL drop dead gorgeous sans (to the best of my knowledge) a bit of plastic surgery! Her career spans decades; she's no joke! If she were yt, she'd get some kinda lifetime achievement award. Eh, screw d'oscars.

Name: McNasty
Comment: Katgrrrl Ms. Ruby has had no surgery - in that black doesn't crack the old girl aged naturally and just like Ms. Lena and they both look all the better for it.

Name: timmdogg
Comment: It's about freakin time - this woman is a legend and deserve all the accoladed given! Kudos to you Ms. Dee!

Name: khufu
Comment: she actually deserves a lifetime achievement

Name: Dovelyone
Comment: The Oscars can be SO WHITE it's sickening. Glad that Ruby Dee got nominated. She did a good, believable job in AG...I wonder if this nomination is more for her body of work. Denzel for directing? I think we have yet to see his best directing.... Love the movie, though. I agree with who said Don Cheadle should have been considered. Not just for this movie but for his body of work as well. If the writer's strike continues, it may be a broadcast similar to the Golden Globes, which is fine by me. I would like to see my man Johnny Depp take Best Actor for Sweeney Todd. I'm rooting for him... and Ruby Dee.

Name: MzTee
Comment: It's a dang shame it took almost 70 years for her to receive an academy award nomination. I don't think she'll win the award based on the stiff competition in her category and the virtual lockout of AG in the other major categories, but Ruby Dee along with other notable black actresses should have won this award a long time ago.
