Comment: Granted he was stupid for cheating on his wife, in essence shatting where he eats but this young black man (first one so young in his position) used company equipment to conduct an affair. Sometimes I just can't have sympathy for these folk! We know, whether or not we agree with it, that we are held to a higher standard and especially when this kind of rank is involved. I find it difficult to believe that it isn't in us to behave and learn to appreciate and celebrate our accomplishments rather than tarnish that and the position.

Also, Beatty's former husband, Lou, was a close friend of Kwame's. The man was even his son's football coach.

The text messages published by the Free Press revealed a romantic discourse that at times became sexually explicit.
"I'm madly in love with you," Kilpatrick wrote on Oct. 3, 2002.
"I hope you feel that way for a long time," Beatty replied. "In case you haven't noticed, I am madly in love with you, too!"
On Oct. 16, 2002, Kilpatrick wrote Beatty: "I've been dreaming all day about having you all to myself for 3 days. Relaxing, laughing, talking, sleeping and making love."

I'm hearing some of the test messages contain information about the "party that never was" in which Kwame's wife stepped up into the party and beat the dancer (who later turned up murdered) with a bat. In addition what other crimes were discussed on that blackberry. He wouldn't be going through this if he had just settled out of court with the secuity/police officers. Kwame knew at the time the transcripts from the texts were in the prosecutors hand but could not be brought into testimony. Did he foolishly think they would never be leaked. His problems are more than just arrogance. I think he has some deep mental issues.

Like ginerg stated the running up of his city credit card of personal vacations and stuff, ordering a 65k police suv for his wife to drive around and then lying about it until absolute proof was resended. Running around with a security team of 20 men, the largest of any mayor in the country even NY and Chicago, while there aren't enough police on the street; having some of his buddies assigned to his security team and then paying them 100k in overtime while for shadowing him at clubs or for not working at all. Then of course there was the infamous alleged party at the mayor mansion in which his wife allegely got into a fight with a stripper who later that later turned up dead. And then he had the officers that were investigating the stripper case fired; they sued and the kwame took the stand telling one lie after another. Then when the judy didn't believe him he played the racecard. Now the city is out of 9 mill. It was doing the trail that this business about his affair came out and of course he lied.

Comment: Check out the new Black website www.TheRoot.com. This is the start of a piece on it: "It's bone-chillingly cold in Detroit, and the big auto show is going on, but all anyone can talk about is the scandal consuming Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick--the one a local TV station calls "Sex, Lies and Texting." Once known as America's first hip-hop mayor, Kilpatrick, 37, had notably toned down his living-large lifestyle in his second term as the mayor of Motown. But this week, his partying past caught up with him. The Detroit Free Press published text messages between Kilpatrick (who is married with children) and his chief of staff, Christine Beatty (divorced with children), that seem to confirm what both have denied under oath: that they had an illicit affair. "I've been dreaming all day about having you all to myself for three days," Kilpatrick texted Beatty on his city-issued pager in 2002, according to the Free-Press findings. "Relaxing, laughing, talking, sleeping and making love."

Comment: Adultery, philanderer, skullduggery, infidelity are some of the labels and accusations that have been thrown at Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. Not only that but more than one political person has referred to the mayor as a thug. A thug is something like a gangster but one who lacks the mob-type organization and is reduced to mere petty crimes. Not only is the term an insult, it lacks the sophistication on the romanticized gangster image such as applied to Corleone (The Godfather), Al Capone or even John Gotti. Thug is a double insult. Coincidently Black criminals are called thugs while White criminals are called gangsters or mobsters. Some mobsters or gangsters become famous and popular like celebrities. Thugs never do. With the election season almost at an end, less than two months away, it would seem time for these types of accusations to surface. But these and others were used to describe the mayor as far back as four years ago when he first ran for office and as he began to serve his first year.
The most prominent and pivotal accusation is the rumored wild party at the Manoogian mansion. Back in 2002 Kwame Kilpatrick didn't move into the mayor's residence immediately after taking office. He waited about five months which led to many speculations. His own stated reasons were that he did not want to disrupt his family’s life and his children’s school year. Kwame Kilpatrick is a mayor with young children, something Detroit hasn't had in a long time. Gossip and then rumors about parties at the mansion began. At first no one wanted to report on the rumors, even though they reached the media and politically astute citizens. It was just rumors.
Supposedly, as the rumor goes, Kwame Kilpatrick and friends, which in some stories includes Col. Tadarial Sturdivant the Director of the state police, attended a party at the mayor’s mansion. Two or more strippers were supposed to be performing at the party for the guests. Kwame’s wife, Carlotta who still lived at the family home on Leslie Street, supposedly came to the mansion to check or see her husband. She walked in on the party and an unknown police officer, who was supposed to be watching the door, was unable to keep her out of the house and could not warn the mayor or guests. The mayor was allegedly in the process of of a lap dance by one of the stripper’s, whose nick name is Strawberry. Thus the wife was supposed to have caught the act and attacked the girl. Carlotta is then said to have a baseball bat which she either brings with her or finds in the house, in some versions she has The Club, which she uses to attack the girl so severely that the stripper ends up needing serious medical attention which includes a hospital stay. Upon this occurrence the party halts and the DPD officers escort all out and take the mayor and his wife home.

Comment: As the continuing saga goes, the stripper and other non-police persons end up dead. According to the some police officers a girl who has a nickname of strawberry was murdered. But there is no evidence or proof that the real individual is the same as the one from the rumor. The real individual is supposedly and allegedly, according to the same police officers, linked to the drug trade and prostitution. (As this is just a rumor and no proof exists the girls name will not be used.) Political foes of the mayor added to this rumor by claiming that Kwame Kilpatrick and or members of his staff who may have been at the party had this woman and others killed. The public release of this murder and the rumor from being a gossip piece to a public issue coincided with the news event of a Detroit police officer from the internal affairs division, Lt. Gary Brown, being fired for alleged insubordination. Thus the rumor has few supposed witnesses and those with no links to the mayor allegedly end up dead. This is a convenient way to control a story and a way to make it hard to disprove this rumor.
Mildred Gaddis, a local talk radio show host and supporter of Freman Hendrix who is not running for mayor, was the first to publicly discuss these rumors. But she and her co-hosts, who at the time this issue became completely public was Angelo Henderson, an award wining reporter, and Greg Bowens, former press secretary to former Mayor Dennis Archer. She repeats the allegations as fact. When Brown made the news she changed her story from that of hearing about this rumor to retelling the rumor as a factual occurrence. None of this was worth reporting in any news organization and was not reported until Lt. Gary Brown of the DPD was relived of his duties from the Detroit police department.
Lt. Gary Brown allegedly began an investigation into the mayor on several issues. These included the alleged misuse of overtime by Kwame Kilpatrick's security staff, the rumored wild party at the mansion and the supposed deaths of a stripper and prostitute who allegedly attended the rumored party. Brown was working in internal affairs, the department that is supposed to catch dirty cops. Instead he went after what has considered a dirty mayor. Brown’s investigation into overtime abuses was out of his jurisdiction. Those matters are supposed to be handled by the city’s finance division and if necessary the law department. The police department is only supposed to investigate if a crime has been committed. But because of the rumored ties between the party and the mayors security staff, which is constantly with the mayor, an investigation into the mayors alleged illegal activities cannot be done unless the assumption is made that members of the mayors security staff are involved in the illegal activities and therefore under suspicion.

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin's daughter, Kai Franklin Graham, pleaded guilty in federal court Dec. 18 to playing a minor role in her ex-husband Tremayne Graham's crime ring -- and she agreed to cooperate in what a prosecutor describes as an "ongoing investigation" into his cocaine enterprise.
Mayor Franklin sat toward the front of the Greenville courtroom, her signature flower pinned to the lapel of her jacket, and watched as her eldest daughter pleaded guilty to a federal "information," which bypasses indictment and allows the defendant to enter an immediate plea. After the hearing the mayor smiled at her daughter, and the two left the courthouse, declining to comment.

Comment: This is the real issue; what happens if he does resign? The strapping former collegiate football player toned down the bling (he took out his big diamond stud earring) and subdued the swagger. He started to gain some traction in his efforts to clean up the city and attract new business. Super Bowl XL went off without a hitch two years ago, and Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert recently announced plans to move the headquarters of his company, Quicken Loans, to downtown Detroit. "This does not in any way alter Quick Loans or its sister companies from proceeding full speed ahead with our plans to build a headquarters in downtown Detroit," Gilbert said in a statement. "Our commitment is long term, and transcends any short-term event or challenge."
Still, if Kilpatrick is forced to resign, all business bets are off. Efforts could stall to upgrade and expand Cobo Hall, home to the annual Detroit Auto Show, which pumps a half billion much-needed dollars into the local economy. Already, the threadbare convention center is losing business to other auto shows in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. Porsche, for example, skipped the Detroit show this year for the first time in 20 years. "If he leaves, I would hope we don't reverse the progress that's been made," says economist David Sowerby of Loomis Sayles, who just appeared with Kilpatrick at a press conference on Cobo Hall. "He was as gregarious and engaging as ever, but that was last week."

In response to a question that had NOTHING to do with Jesse Jackson or any past elections, especially one dating back 24 years, Bill Clinton brings up Jesse Jackson. As Ms. Blake said, if he wanted to make the point that a win in SC was not a good predictor for the nomination, he could have just cited the last election in 2004 in which Edwards won SC then lost the nomination, but noooooo, he had to go back 20 years and 6 primaries to make a comparison to Jesse Jackson. Why? Come on, we know you lovessss you some Clintons, but please stop insulting our intelligence and limiting your own.

Comment: The following is the full text of a resignation letter from Christine Beatty, Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's chief of staff, dated Monday and released by the city of Detroit:
Dear Mayor Kilpatrick,
I would first like to thank you and the citizens of Detroit for the opportunity to have worked for the city that I love so much over the past six years.
Serving as Chief of Staff for the Kilpatrick administration since 2002 has been an honor and a privilege. I was born and raised in Detroit and my childhood goal was always to serve my city. I came back home after college to do just that. Serving our citizens and helping to transform Detroit into an even greater city is what I've been dedicated to everyday since January 2002.
As Chief of Staff, I managed key city departments in such areas as human services and labor relations as well as administering the day to day operation of the Mayor's office. I've served the administration and Detroit citizens with diligence, strength and perseverance and I hope that my efforts will one day show through above all else.
In spite of this, however, I believe that it is clear I can no longer effectively carry out the duties of Chief of Staff. Therefore, this letter serves as my resignation effective, February 8, 2008 to allow for an orderly transition of my duties with the new chief of staff. I painfully regret the devastation that the recent reports have caused to the citizens of Detroit, to my co workers, to the Mayor's family and to my family and friends.
Again, I thank you and the citizens of Detroit for the opportunity to serve.
Sincerely,
Christine L. Beatty

Comment: White politicians are just as corrupt as Black politicians, the only difference is that White politicians usually make some type of deal and/or resign before the stuff hits the fan. I also think that people are more willing to cover up White politicians mess or at least give them the heads up so that they can leave their positon with some dignity, which allows them to reinvent themselves and get jobs elsewhere. Black people are always under scrutiny. Black politicians keep forgetting this.

They think they'll be treated the same as whites in the same position and it's a ridiculous thought. It's unfair but we get slammmed 2-fold for the same stuff white men do all the time. If Obama became president (and I hope he does) and he pulled a "Bill & Monica" with the nut on the dress and the speech about not having relations w/that woman - he'd have gotten locked the f--- up and impeached. I like to think that blacks are the better people but clearly we aren't. For example, I was crushed when I found out the DC sniper was a black dude! Blacks are advancing in every area - political corruption, mass murder - there's nothing we can't do! (shaking my head)...

Comment: ladybyrd, I'm not a Detroiter, but I am nosy.
I found a report that says Kwame used 8,600 from his Kilpatric Civic Fund to take his wife, three kids and a babysitter on a weeklong vacation to a five-star California resort. His sister and friends control the fund.
Interestingly, the fund was created to improve Detroit through voter education, economic empowerment and crime prevention. I guess he thought the city's funds were his own personal kitty.

Comment: Queenie, you are right. I've seen folks destroy their careers doing what they KNOW other folks routinely get away with.

Comment: The person who told the police "Do you know who the fu-- I am?" was not the mayor's wife, it was Christine Beatty.

Comment: It goes back to the stereotypical image of black males as reckless, oversexed creatures who are incapable of controlling themselves. This myth was floated before, during and after slavery. Yet, black families were able to form strong communities, businesses, etc. However, an allegation of rape could result in the whole town being burned down.
That is why brazen folk like Kwame make me sick to my stomach.

Comment: In some bit of irony, even if we KNOW Kwame K. is lying about the affairs, it would be difficult in this case to prove perjury. Circumstantial evidence will not do. Perjury is a crime and would have to be proven beyond reasonable doubt. In a criminal perjury trial neither the mayor nor his alleged mistress would have to tesify. So the only evidence that the state would have are the text messages and the inferences by the guards that they often took the mayor over to Ms. Beatty's house late at night. In a high-profile criminal trial, that's probably not going to get it done. They need video or someone who saw sex occur. IMO

Comment: What may suprise eveyone is that Kwame's wife just recently found out about the details of this affair. Trust and believe this! I love my frat brother and all but this is an embarrassment to all that he represents. My heart goes out to those little boys and that woman whom he should have been protecting, instead he treated them as if they were disposable.

Comment: Exmun, Beatty's husband must have worked the nightshift or been a very sound sleeper. And just where the hell did Mrs. Kwame think her husband was going in the middle of the night?

Comment: Calidee & Queenie - It ticks me off every time some crap like this happens. When will Black politicians and high profile folks realize that they shouldn't do what yt folks do? First of all, they should be ethical and devoted to uplifting their own people; secondly, they are much more likely to get busted and revealed. Bill Campbell (former Atlanta mayor), Charles Walker (former GA state legislator), and Mike Vick all have orange jumpsuits and numbers stitched across their chests right now. What's disgusting about Kwame and Christine is they didn't care about their own children, spouses, or their Detroit constituents. It was all about their lusts. When will folks believe the Bible: you reap what you sow? It's bad enough you committed adultery, then you committed perjury. I have NO sympathy for either of them, just for their innocent children who will have to visit their father and mother on Sundays and put money on their "books".

Comment: I am from the D. I retired from a City job. This whole incedent sucks. Everyone is talking about it. News media is camping out at Beatty's house and the Mayors house. The trickle down effect for their families is really nasty. They both have school age kids. Young folks can be cruel to other kids.
What ever else she did she had his back as far as City business was concerned. I don't care who he sleeps with, I don't have to wash the sheets. Thats between he and his wife.
We are loosing jobs and businesses here in the D. We need to get back to running the city.
