Comment: First Natalie now Ree Ree...somehow when Beyonce said that I knew "it" would hit the fan...I don't know who is older Anna Mae or Aretha, but dang Aretha let it go. Anna Mae still rocks 3" Laboutin's and can shake and shimmy with the best of em. Can she be the Queen for a day?...actually Tina is the Queen of Rock -- in her heyday she rarely did concert halls Tina was strictly stadium! And it was awesome!! Sorry Ree Ree you're accomplished too, but not like that!

Comment: While Aretha is called by many, the "Queen of Soul", and she has a long history in the music industry, this attitude of entitlement that she has is nuts. It's all about opinion, and I for, one, have been mystified by the deification of Aretha. Some great songs, a very strong voice...but there are many others with great songs and strong voices...and she needs to get over herself (though i doubt that will ever happen.

Comment: Bwc1023, big time co-sign. I've always gotten "ego" from Aretha. I could go into other incidents, but I won't. It seems she thinks she's "officially" a queen, lol. Tis a NICKNAME. The more gracious thing would have been, "Tina Turner is a queen in her own way too. I appreciated that I was included in the intro and let's leave it at that." But that would have been too humble for Retha, lol. *rolling eyes*

Comment: Right! First Natalie, now Aretha. Yes, Aretha is the Queen of Soul, but now the queen of EVERYTHING. Tina Turner is indeed a queen of the stage to many people. Unfortunately, Aretha now only seems to be the queen of Popeye's Chicken or the queen of breast milk. We love her, but Morris Day needed to back up a giant mirror to her at the Grammy's.

It is a NICKNAME!!! I wish she'd keep those arms covered up for the remainder of her time on the planet. It's amazing how someone so big, fat and sloppy-looking could have such delusions of grandeur. Neither one of these performers are queens. They're just two very talented people who got lucky. Teigh, Anna Mae is 68 and Aretha is 65.

Comment: 1) She should trademark it
2) VH1 did a show once on the top vocalists of all time and RE Re was number 1...in oder to understand the deification of Re Re one would have to truky understand the evolution (artisitically, aestethetically, culturally, socially) of American music...oh SHE DOES derserve the title....no doubt.......
3) More than likely the writers who wrote the script were young white kids (though they could have been Black) who had no clue about the music for real........also if they were white, more than likely, if young, had more "appreciation" of crossed-over Tina than the soul, R and B AND Gospel rooted Aretha
4) RE RE love ya but get a hold on your health

Comment: Grace12_34> you had me until you said lucky; Wasn't no luck with Anna Mae...old girl left that mess of a man she had with NOTHING but her name and built a rock career the one one has even come close to matching when no one said she would or could. She was singing in hotels, to senior citizens and the B& C rooms of Vegas working her way back. After she hooked up with Roger Davies the rest was history Tina left America when the Blacks wasn't down with the Rock music she wanted to sing. She had one of the most dynamic live performances I have ever seen PERIOD. She's right up there with the Rolling Stones in my book. Tina gave you almost 3 hours when she toured. Beyonce, who is compared to Tina because she does stadiums as well can't even do that NOW. I'm with you Grace but neither of them were lucky -- they both have talent and can more than hold their own still today. The major difference between Tina & Aretha is that Ree Ree let her men control her career and it held her back...once Tina rid herself of Ike it was not stopping Ms. Bullock!

Comment: For years, Aretha has been a little leery of the press because she's been misquoted. Honestly, I don't know if she actually said this or not. I notice there is no press agency attached to this story or footage to show she made this 'statement'. I know Aretha is used to being spoiled but she's always been classy as she has never publicly 'dissed' other singers. I'm a little suspicious about this so-called 'statement'.

Comment: I DISAGREE w/ all of you who are against ree. Yeas she needs one less breakfast, yes she could use a stylist, but I thought we were getting 3 performances when Bey announced the Queen! I knew Bey was supposed to be singing w/ Tina, so when she said Queen I thought they had added Aretha. I really thought we were in for a surprise, and I would have loved it! It doesn't matter how she got the nickname, it's been hers since before I was born. The only other persons ever to be nicknamed like that since were Mary (By puffy), Michael (by himself), and Prince (by his parents -- yes it's his real name)! I do think it was some kind of dig, or some idiotic mistake -- especially when she was ALSO performing that night.
BTW didn't Bey seem to upstage Tina. And don't say it's just Bey, when you have two performers like that, you can taylor your performance not to outshine the other if you are being considerate. It didn't help that Tina kept on wanting to sing what was supposed to be a part they wanted Beyonce to sing.

The are based on collective socio-cultural standards....
While Price is far more talented and gited than Michael J, the reason his is called King of Pop has more to do with MJ's beig the first to crossover and achieve greatness outside of certain musical categories.....he was first to achieve certain status in "Pop" catergory based on record sales, concerts and also in influencing a wide range of all kinds of performers

Comment: PRDC, I agree with your first line completely and I also believe it boils down to perception/opinion. When Bey said "Queen" I in NO WAY considered or thought that Aretha was going to be performing, because she didn't say "Queen of Soul"....but again, that's my perception. I love Tina and Aretha, both of them in my book are Legends. As far as this issue is concerned, I am sure Beyonce had no intentions on "dissing" Aretha or even thought that she would be direspecting her by using the word queen. I wonder if Queen Elizabeth would have been offended if she were in the audience? How about Mary J. or Mahalia? Like someone posted earlier, it's just a nickname. I feel like I understand the musical and cultural impact that both of them had/still have....this is coming from someone who at 7 & 8 years old use to get beatings (every other day it seemed like) because my Mom cornrowed my hair and by the time I got home from school I had taken the cornrows out so I could "wear a blow out" because I idolized Tina. Thanks to Aretha, I've been singing since I was "knee high to a grasshopper." As I stated earlier, both are Legends in their own right and I appreciate the impact that they've had/still have and IMO Beyonce is 1 of the few artists that still show these legends respect.

Comment: STONY, I'm with you. When I heard B say that, ithought "I never heard Tina called "Queen" of ANYTHING. Even in her comeback, 10 or 12 years ago, she was never QUEEN of anything. Seems like B is constantly getting into trouble but I think it's still B Backlash. They tried to make B everything since 2006 and whenever there's some controversy in the industry, Bs name comes up -- You can't have your place in sun without getting burned. However, I believe the industry is guilty of making it's artists further insecure with that you're only as good as your last hit garbage. Aretha and MJB are the ONLY ones that come to recent memory being referred to as Queens. And you can't trust folk -- errybody looking for their 15 minutes and it's name is controversy. And all those so focused on Aretha's outside, it still doesn't change who she is as a person. Constant comments about her weight issues seem to be so mean spirited is so tiring. All those who ae a size 12 will not stay that way. Age and slow metabolism will affect most of us. And we should be building up instead of tearing down. I get so disappointed with disrespect for our elders and those who paved the way. How sad for us black folk. Even though Amy is a crackhead, white folk don't carry on about their own the way we do about our own. And if we don't love and respect our own, how DARE we expect love and respect from others.

Comment: Beyonce's intro clearly indicated that she respects the legends who came before. I'll venture to say that the term "queen" is not what upset Ree. She's twisted because the weight loss program that she announced last year obviously isn't working for her and she had to look at a svelte Beyonce and Tina (well, maybe not so much in the tummy), but you get my drift. Those sisters were looking great from generation to generation. That is what is fueling Ree's frustration.
Instead of getting upset with them, she better getting hopping mad with herself and get into a medically supervised program before that weight kills her.

My friend said "Those straps must be made of stainless steel." Realuvbaby mentions that we shouldn't make fun of or criticize Aretha. The EUR is an entertainment site and we joke about a lot of folks. That doesn't mean we don't love, honor and respect them, and want the best for them. Last summer EUR ran a story about Aretha postponing her wedding and working on getting healthier. Many posters applauded her efforts and hoped that she would be succesful. I still hope that she gets it together before it's too late. We've lost other Black legends due to health and weight problems: Ron Winans, Barry White, Luther Vandross, etc. Everyone is not meant to be skinny, but we all should strive to be healthy.

We waited for two hours for her to come out and when she did by the time she got to her third song there was 100 people if that (including me) standing in front of the stage. Everybody else cleared out. When she realized we were the only people there she walked off the stage. I was pis.s.ed for several reasons. She should have kept her azz on stage and continued performing and we were not sure why she was disrepected like that. The people walked out on her while she was singing "respect." We drove over three hundred miles to see her perform and she took my money and ran.

Comment: wow. the comments on the board are interesting. this IS an entertainment site, so hey! In reading the article, a couple of things stand out:
1) Aretha is not really feeling %*$!ed or angry, she's just noting her title. She has earned this title whether generation x, y, zebra get it or not. Ultimately, she said she loves Bey and Tina so keep it moving folks.
2) the headline seems to be really influencing folks on here but I'm weary of the exact words Aretha said. Where'd this story originate. Just keeping up some mess.
Next: Aretha knows she's big. Dang.
Also, I don't care if she DID slap her backup singer. Why was she slapped? Was she getting "out of pocket?" Shooot, Diana tells folks not to call her Diana but Ms. Ross! So hey! These models and rap females' out here pummeling folks with cellphones and slapping peoples heads to the white meat and it ain't nuttin' so hey! These living legends have been through the fire (pun intended)and don't want no cure's for their love hangovers, they want R-E-S-P-E-C-T!!...In a business where people are cutthroat and backstabbing. The next young thang is always vying for your spot, etc. and frankly is just a product of some money machine whereas these ladies have maintained their careers for ages! Gone, head 'Retha! Handle yours!

Somebody should have told her queen or no queen how tacky she looked. Then, she has the nerve to be in Jet Magazine talking about her losing weight. I couldn't tell at the Grammy's. Aretha has let herself go and instead of worrying about a title, she should worry about her excessive weight gain and how God awful she looks. Did anyone see when they did that tribute to her on BET and she took the stage to sing all of her hits? She looked like an elephant trying to the do electric slide. Comment: Aretha Louise Franklin (born March 25, 1942) is an American singer, songwriter, and pianist. She is known to the music world as "The Queen of Soul" and is affectionately called "Sister Ree" by her fans. She is renowned for her soul recordings but is also adept at jazz, rock, blues, pop, gospel, and even opera.[1] She is widely acclaimed for her passionate, soulful vocal style, which is aided by a massive and powerful vocal range.

Comment: Adept at the piano as well as having a gifted voice, Franklin became a child prodigy. By the age of fourteen, she was given a record deal with Checker Records, where her father recorded his sermons and gospel vocal recordings and issued The Gospel Soul of Aretha Franklin in 1956. Her earlier influences included Clara Ward and Mahalia Jackson, both of whom spent a lot of time in Aretha's home.

Comment: After being offered contracts from Motown and RCA, Franklin signed with Columbia Records in 1960. Her recordings during that time reflected a jazz influence inspired by Washington and hardly reflected on her gospel roots. Franklin initially scored a few hits on Columbia including her version of "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby (With A Dixie Melody)", which peaked at number 37 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart in 1961, and the Top 10 R&B hits, "Today I Sing The Blues", "Won't Be Long" and "Operation Heartbreak". However, by the end of 1966, with little commercial success obtained during six years on Columbia and desperate for a sound, she accepted an offer to sign with Atlantic Records. According to Franklin years later, "they made me sit down on the piano and the hits came."

Comment: In 1967 Franklin issued her first Atlantic single, "I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)", a blues ballad that introduced listeners to her gospel style. Produced by Jerry Wexler, the song became Franklin's breakthrough single reaching the Top 10 on the Hot 100, and holding the #1 spot for 7 weeks on Billboard's R&B Singles chart. The B-side to the single, "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man", charted on the R&B side, and introduced a more gospel element to Franklin's developing sound.

Comment: Hold up Aretha has nothing to be jealous of. She is not only The Queen who can sing gospel, opera, jazz, country and R&B she also sang for MLK to help attract people to meetings. She sang at Martin Luther King's funeral. So she’s more than a singer, she’s an ICON of the highest magnitude. Aretha the First WOMAN to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is jealous? Sorry folks I agree with Aretha (who is the best who ever done it fat or skinny). When I heard Bey say queen I said what?....But the thing I didn’t like when Bey said (after naming all our black divas) this: “There is ONE legend who has the essence of all of those things: the glamour, the soul, the passion, the strength, the talent” and to say that Tina is ALL these things alluded to the fact that the other women lack something and didn’t have all those qualities which is ridiculous. People just don't know how to honor folks in their own right anymore ......to me was a bad choice of words. I remember when they said Timberlake was the new king of pop. MJ let people know Da Hell. When they tried to push Keyisha as the new Queen of Hip Hop Soul..... MJB said hell naw'll. While people think Aretha is overreaching, me sitting home on my sofa when I saw the intro I thought HUH, Aretha’s not going to like that? So did others, sounds like she received several inquiries about it and released a statement accordingly. I am not a paid spokesman for Aretha. LOL

Aretha was very glamorous back in the day. She wore the sequence gowns and the whole nine. She was one of the first big name black stars to wear African inspired clothes and wear her hair braided and an Afro ( along with Cecily Tyson). Beside if someone thought she wasn’t, you still should get on stage and allude to it.
She was not always this big. I try not to criticize people other people’s weight because ya never know where a person is in their quest to lose the weight. A person could have just lost 2, 3, 5, 10, 15 pounds and I don’t know it because I don’t know them.

Comment: NYCsoul, whoa! Hold up, I'm not trying to "put words in your fonts" lol. I suggest you re-read your first post: "For years, Aretha has been a little leery of the press because she's been misquoted...I know Aretha is used to being spoiled but she's always been classy as she has never publicly 'dissed' other singers. I'm a little suspicious about this so-called 'statement'." There is NO one who can read that comment and not gather that you apparently believe this is not in Aretha's character. I disagreed with you, plain and simple, based on what I've read, what I've heard, and the unprofessional way she cancelled a concert a while back (that's my personal ordeal.) But just FYI, this story was reported by the Associated Press, it was on the front page of the AJC website. It's as credible as any other story. And beyond that, I'm DEFINTELY not taking this personally, couldn't give a dang either way really, lol. YOU on the other hand, seem to be allowing your affinity for Ms. Franklin to cloud your judgement. Toodles.

I know this is beyond petty--and really, Miss Aretha should just get over herself--but this IS Beyonce's industry and navigating egos just comes with the territory.

Comment: Actually I think Ms. Franklin had a little green-eyed envy when she saw the performance of Beyonce and Ms. Turner so the decided to bring on "another" dramatic temper tantrum about Beyonce calling Tina a "Queen". I strongly advice everyone to read the autobiography that Ms. Franklin wrote about herself that was written almost 10 years ago. Ms. Franklin has a problem with everyone from Dianna Ross, Gladys Knight, etc. She really need to stop being so petty and focus on losing that weight so that she can put on great live performances, like the other veterans in the industry.

If the truth be told, Aretha is more culturally relevant than Tina Turner. What has Tina Turner contributed to black folks except the fact that Ike Turner used her as a punching bag? Tina has never been the Queen of anything until her comeback in the eighties. And even then, she was barely referred to as the Queen of Rock N Roll, a title for a genre that was already on its way out by the 90s. Aretha, on the other hand, has had this moniker for YEARS and now folks want to tell her shut up. Interesting, people are calling her childish and petty but the comments here directed towards her can be interpreted in the same fashion. Aretha is being sensitive but I really don't get all the degrading comments about her. Beyonce, on the other hand, can use some lessons in black music history and show some respect for ALL those that came before her.

Comment: NYCsoul>Hold on, now. I know I'm late boarding this ship, but I just read this. I agree with your point about being knowledgeable about music history. But as for the comments about Ms. Franklin's weight...She has publicly stated that she's been attempting to lose weight. What a lot of the posters are saying is that, in their opinion, she should be concerned about more SERIOUS issues in her own life, namely her weight, then getting all "bent out of shape" over a "title". They also feel that her choice of clothing is not flattering to a woman of her size. I, too, agree with this veiwpoint. To me, Aretha has more meaty matters on her plate(no pun intended) than getting all riled up about society dubbing her a "queen".

Comment: SewRite> Aretha has always battled her weight so there's nothing shocking about that. But because she is dealing with her weight issues, she's not allowed to express how she feels about an issue, as 'petty' as some people feel it is? Who am I to say what is and what isn't important to someone? It's one thing to say she needs to lose weight but it's quite another to demean her the way some of the comments from some of the previous posts have. I mean, attack the message but not the messenger.

Comment: NYCsoul>True. And, I need to clarify that while I agree with most of the posters, I never personally stated that she was wrong to EXRESS herself concerning this matter. I just don't understand it. But that's me, and whether I understand her reasoning or not, she STILL HAS THE RIGHT to express herself just as I do. I do feel that her weight/health issue, by comparison, is more important than some "ego feeding diva recognition" title. But, that's my opinion to which I am entitled.

Comment: ladybird// when i here someone say the king I and most people think Micheal JACKSON..So that refutes that argument. Secondly to the posters that are sad because people are bashing fat Az$ ARetha it has been clear in the posts. if she were a nice person overall like gladys , patti , tina. Aretha has long since been known for her over the top diva tantrums, rudeness to fans and fellow artists and musicians. i have actually seen it 1st hand.. people have been letting her get away with it but enough is enough now especially since she is not even that major today. For those who say the young ones should know their musical history???? How crazy is that or are you! Just because Aretha came b4 Bey (not a Bey fan but)does not mean she has to idolize Aretha there were many artists out at the same time and b4 Aretha. I like sarah vaugh & Ella. When aretha(lard az%) was out i did enjoy her music but was not a fan does that make me ignorant of my musical history? NO. Some people may not like soul music or singers who belt or hollar if u will like the aretha's, chaka, gladys's whitneys or patti's. I luv belters but that is my choice. Bey apparently choose TIna as her queen,. As i at the time of Aretha choose 2 side with Natalie .which has long since been changed to Miss Patti Labelle as the queen. Aretha needs 2 realize its nice 2 b important but its more important 2b nice.. She is hung up on the wrong things that is why she is soooo fat. The nasty remarks are made about her because she is soo rude and nasty herself it is just a way 2 give it back 2 her, The main point is that she looks very crazy taking this Queen thing so serious. If i were presenting my mother with an award an she sings. I intro her as the queen . she is the queen of my world. would fat azz have a problem with that.Triffling

Comment: travis>Good words!! I concur, Aretha believes the hype and that's her problem. And, Diana Ross is another one with a bad case of "diva-itis"!!! She recently got booed by fans that weren't having it!! I wonder if she drank a glass of milk with that slice of "humble pie"?
