Comment: BUSTED!! ROFL!!

Name: nightshift
Comment: I bet she hit the nail on the head. Too bad her sis called her out!

Name: bigfriend
Comment: Why didn't she just write this book as fiction and she would have had no problems? Dummy.

Name: fuzzygoss
Comment: Deje Vu James Frey all over again! Guess Lil Miss Hood's world has been shattered into a million little pieces! She could have written as fiction with a subtitle such like: as told by those who have lived the rougher side of life, seen through my own eyes, something that would have given credit to the originators. BUT AS ALWAYS, GREED CONQUERS ALL!!!

Name: HarrisThomas
Comment: her sister did a good deed

Name: nightshift
Comment: You right bigfriend, this is Vanilla Ice all over again! LOL

Name: khufu
Comment: It's appeal was that it was supposed to be real life so it being pitched as fiction wouldnt have gotten it picked up. If a sister had written this as fiction on non-fiction, it would not have ben picked up. And so will they pull it or will this help it sell more units? It will probably get a movie deal and then a movie series.... and Im waiting for it............. "Well, Roots was later found out to be based on previous fictional material........"

Name: NYCsoul
Comment: More yt fantasies of living perilously through us and making a profit. I don't feel sorry for her one bit. We already have enough 'street literature' to last a lifetime yet because this chick was 'yt', she was gonna get paid before her deception was revealed. Too bad, so sad! Next!

Name: khufu
Comment: she has a Black name

Name: Sexee
Comment: The cycle continues... Her account will stay in history (once they eliminate us or we eliminate ourselves). This is how whitey perpetuates history... What a loser!

Name: DOne
Comment: Obviously some family dyfunction going on there. If one of my siblings would do such thing, while I would let them know that I think it was wrong, I would tell on them either as long as they aren't breaking any laws or hurting anyone.

Name: blackdragon
Comment: This is just like that James Frye guy who was busted after his book was recommended by Oprah Winfrey and then appeared on Oprah Winfrey's show to explain himself. Why couldn't this woman present her book as fiction? Why say you grew up this way when you obviously didn't? There must be a reason why she did this.

Name: Train
Comment: Why are these crazy azz suburban ppl so enchanted with gang life when the actual ppl who want to get out of it can't?

Name: khufu
Comment: TRAIN have you forgetooen the REAL history of white folks? They are the original gang banagers....

Name: mcctusk
Comment: having had some experience with a publishing house, they do have considerable influence on 'your' vision. that said, it would not surprise me in the least if she were 'guided' in the direction of writing a memoir, instead of an account, especially since she is an unknown writer. sadly, corporate publishing houses are only interested in the bottom line. when real story was uncovered, it was no problem for them to hang the little guy out to dry. welcome to america!

Name: Train
Comment: As much stuff as I saw growing up in Compton I wouldn't write a book about it. I guess that's why white folks love gangsta rap so much because they can enjoy it w/out having to actually go through it.

Name: OSUN
Comment: HarrisThomas her sister may have done a good deed, but I bet there were not any good intentions behind her actions. Why did she not approach her sister first and give her an opportunity to come forward instead doing a Kima.

Name: OSUN
Comment: Khufu, please expound on your statements about Roots.

Name: gingerg
Comment: Train, that is an excellent question this a.m.

Name: DCGG
Comment: Lying azz bytch BURN HER AT THE STAKE!!!

Name: Train
Comment: Regardless of her sister's intention homegirl was wrong plain and simple. Trying to make herself look like a G when her lilly white azz would've got turned out by my boys.

Name: kamichijackson
Comment: The woman could've called the Times directly and busted her sister in that way, which would've been far more controversial/sensational. Calling the publisher may have been her way of trying to keep it a little quieter. Riverhead didn't necessarily have to reveal that it was the sister that dimed the author out. To me that was a little grimey on their part. I doubt the sister had that in mind when she put the woman on blast. Whatever their family dysfunction, it just got a little bit worse...

Name: OSUN
Comment: Kamichi- I found the fact that her sister dimed her out more interesting than the book itself.

Name: katgrrrl
Comment: <----currently concocting a story about being a debutante, raised by a rich, white woman...

Name: kwallace577
Comment: katgrrrl made me laugh really really loud and now folk looking at me here at work. but i agree with the people who say what is the problem? mr. alex haley made up almost every bit of roots and queen so really what is the problem? she should not have done interviews and just laid low and maybe not took a pic. but now i really want to read this. after i read the preview that ran about it i was already interested and i read that it was good.

Name: kwallace577
Comment: a story is a story no matter who wrote it or made it up. she should have shopped it as fiction first though. but most of the stories you read these days even some of the bio's are NOT 100% accurate.

Name: indipindintthnkr
Comment: I agree with whomever said fact checking would have avoided all of this. It unfortunate that White people are always looking for heroines and heros among themselves. They're always ready to embrace their own with these stories when we've got thousands of big momas running households like the one she discribed. The White people with the most bizzar stories the better. And she stroked it, they fell for it. She manipulated them and played off their stupidity. All they had to do was fact check.

Name: Train
Comment: There is no way in hell that this would've really happened. If homegirl came to my old neighborhood trying to slang her body would've been found that afternoon by the LAPD by the L.A. River and her product would've been snatched. No one would take her serious enough thinking that she's po po.

Name: MzTee
Comment: Why didn't the publisher verify the memoir before they published it? Did they not learn anything from the James Frey fiasco? Another classic example of white folks appropriating from the underclass and profiting.

Name: khufu
Comment: OSUn dot you remember that they found that some of ROOTS was based on a fictional account?

Name: OSUN
Comment: Khufu, no that is why I asked you. Give me more.

Name: khufu
Comment: osun there as a lil borrowing supposedly from other sources and a lil literary license taken by haley i m just pointing that out

Name: gingerg
Comment: One of the most troubling aspects is that this woman could just continually lie without having any qualms about it. She has more problems than just trying to profit from the book.

Name: gingerg
Comment: Speaking of lying, I once heard Creflo Dollar say that the first time that Taffi kissed him, they were at her mother's house. He was supposedly so out of it that he picked up the wrong set of keys (to her mother's car no less) and drove away. Taffi had to call him and tell him that he had the wrong car.

Name: Southernbelle
Comment: Well, she could redeem herself by moving to Compton and residing with the Bloods. If she makes it out alive then I'd buy her book LOL.

Name: Stephanie
Comment: gingerg, with names like Creflo and Taffi Dollar, who would believe anything they say??? LOL

Name: ladybyrd
Comment: Train > Probably the same reason that every other black kid who is not in a gang are still throwing up gang signs.

Name: Train
Comment: I grew up in a section of Compton called Southside and the only white folks that we saw was when po po from the PD rolled through hassling us. Like I said before homegirl wouldn't have got no love slanging on my block. Some of the crips that I grew up with would've took her product, smacked her up a few times and then took turns tapping that white azz.

Name: goodnplenty1957
Comment: just anotha "chuck" getting black folk to fall for the "okie-doke"..just wondered why none of the so-called gang members she mentioned in her book ever came out and said, "who dis biich?"

Name: gingerg
Comment: Train, what is LA going to do about those out of control gangs? I just read that a young brother who was doing well in school/athletics and headed to college was killed by gang members for no apparent reason other than his race the other day.

Name: Train
Comment: >Gingerg, I have no idea black about that but it is a good question. One possible solution would be better parenting and another would be the black community stop looking the other way when shootings do occur and stop viewing the LAPD as the enemy. When they had Tookie Williams funeral at First AME Church a whole lot of black folks were all there standing room only like he was some gaddayum hero and I was like WTF?? My solution would be to execute the drive by shooters and lock up the drug dealers for life.

Name: Southernbelle
Comment: goodnplenty1957>They won't say anything b/c they don't snitch LOL.

Name: gingerg
Comment: According to MTO, this murder was committed by members of a lation gang. It seems they are performing their own brand of purging in some parts of LA. What are the crips/bloods saying about all of this?

Name: Train
Comment: >Gingerg, unfortunately you are right there are several areas where this is happening. The latino gangs are on a rampage to drive out black residents regardless of whether they're in gangs or not.

Name: gingerg
Comment: Why isn't the NAACP and other organizations speaking on this issue? The gangs are no different than the KKK under the circumstances.

Name: Train
Comment: I'll tell you the reason for this Gingerg and this is from someone who was formerly employed by the LAPD and was frat brothers with Tom Bradley. The city council and black leaders have a "gentlemen's agreement" with the mayor and latino leaders not to criticise each other so as to not rub anyone the wrong way. Usually I laugh and joke on this sight with everybody but this time out I'am dead serious and no one will admit this but it is a fact about how things are "really" done in the city of angels and I think it's disgusting.

Name: HarrisThomas
Comment: OSUN, it doesn't matter whether the sister had evil intentions or just wanted to restore credibility to the family name that was being lied on, the sister did a good deed . . . as far as Kima on The Wire - she did what a good civil servant is supposed to do when being exposed to wrong-doing no matter how well intended: she blew the whistle [good cops were policing while bad cops were gaming; meanwhile the schools were not getting anything]

Name: gingerg
Comment: I wonder whether the agreement would hold if this happened to someone "prominent" or one of their family members. This child's life had value, too. This type of behavior is shameful and criminal.

Name: McNasty
Comment: MzTee because she was white and we all know they tell the truth all the time!

Name: DOne
Comment: In all honesty, other than the fact that she wanted to appear a little more authentic by presenting the book as non-fictions, how is this really any different from the Wire, a show which many of you seem to love, but was still created by a white guy.

Name: OSUN
Comment: HarrisThomas I disagree about Kima. Kima did lots of things shady and I would even say worse than what McNulty did, however she didn't feel the need to snitch on herself.

Name: Train
Comment: Actually eventhough The Wire is a fictional show a lot of the characters were somewhat based on composites real people from that area of Baltimore. The two creators are a 1) A former Baltimore teacher and crime scene reporter and 2)A former Baltimore PD cop so together they have plenty of stories to tell and the characters from which to draw from. They also put on The Corner which came on HBO eight years ago and was actually a real family some of whom appeared with director Charles Dutton at the end of the last episode. That whitegirl was wrong in what she did and she could've hurt a lot of innocent ppl if that book saw the light of day. Plus on top of that it was unbelievable at best because you don't see too many white girls in south central and I know because eventhough we live in Atlanta now I still represent my Lakers to the fullest.

Name: HarrisThomas
Comment: thanks for reminding us to seperate fact from fiction, Train . . . which is interesting because the busted YT author seems to have had the same problem

Name: HarrisThomas
Comment: [returning to the fiction] OSUN, Kima was deeply and spiritually impacted by what she saw in the psychological damage done to the little boy who survived the murders in the home invasion . . . she did a re-%*$essment of her life and vowed to be a better co-mother and, apparently, a better police officer

Name: HarrisThomas
Comment: re-%*$essment = re-azzessment (EUR does some crazy stupid profanity monitoring)

Name: Train
Comment: Did anyone remember seeing The Corner? That was a good miniseries and Khandi Alexander and T.C. Carter did an outstanding job.

Name: Train
Comment: A white girl slanging where I grew up at? Oh hellllllllllll nooooooooo!!!

Name: OSUN
Comment: HarrisThomas- did she say this or are you inferring this from the silent blank stare normally on her face. If what you say is true, then she needs to complete the process by allievating her sins to Daniels.

Name: oshun
Comment: >>Name: Train Comment: I grew up in a section of Compton called Southside and the only white folks that we saw was when po po from the PD rolled through hassling us. Like I said before homegirl wouldn't have got no love slanging on my block. Some of the crips that I grew up with would've took her product, smacked her up a few times and then took turns tapping that white azz. I agree w/you, train (MINUS THE GANG-RAPE SCENARIO), but when i read this my first thought was: no WAY she coulda done all this in compton. just NO WAY! it'll NEVA happen in compton or any other similarly homogenous neighborhood.

Name: Train
Comment: >Oshun, no my brotha they would've raped her. No way she would've been allowed to just walk away after giving up the product. The rape would've happened just to prove a point.

Name: DOne
Comment: >Train, however, she claims that the book was actually based on experiences of friends she had met while doing anti-gang outreach in Los Angeles. Don't know how true it is, if so, its still just another example of a white person telling our stories. A earlier commentator asked why do surburbanites eat this stuff up; well for the some reason they watch shows like the Wire. Personally, I've never seen the Wire and didn't watch the Corner. I don't have HBO so its not like I had a choice, but I wouldn't have anyway. Just like you asked why would you want to read such a book anyway, I don't understand why black people who live in the inner city would want to watch such shows. If I wanted to see that I would have stayed in the house that I own which is right across from a public housing complex.

Name: OSUN
Comment: Of course I believe what this chick did was absolutely wrong. However I know that if this was my sister i would not have put her on blast like that. Maybe I am wrong, but that is the truth.

Name: VincentOMoh
Comment: DOne: The solution would be to find writers in the blighted neighborhoods who are willing to write about this, or have the authors who are not from these neighborhoods to collaborate with people from those neighborhoods. I can understand why there is anxiety in having an outsider portray the community. I think a sign that the author of The Wire is doing a good job is that people on this forum seem to like what he does. There's a book I read called "Third and Indiana" about the Badlands area in Philadelphia. I enjoyed reading the book, which was published in the 1990s by Steve Lopez. I have never lived in a really high crime, blighted area for an extended period of time, so I am curious about life in those areas.
